Her first job is to go undercover in the Midwest's biggest dog show to find out who is dognapping the contestants.
Jamie Bravo is also searching for love. Her ex-girlfriend Veronica thinks they are still together. Her new friend, homicide detective London Wells, is sexy and suave—she wants Jamie in her bed. And Gloria Lambrusco is the second grade teacher Jamie wants to bring home to mom.
Follow Jamie on her new adventures as she solves crime, rescues dogs and makes a mess of her love life. Her quirky gay roommate, her loud and goofy Italian family, a talking parrot, and the world's ugliest dog, make for a hilarious romp in the world of crime and punishment.

Saxon Bennett is an admitted bibliophile and has the bookcases to prove it. Her favorite book is Harriet the Spy. A serious aficionado of pie, she also drinks a lot of coffee and tea - especially when she’s writing, which she does every day. Saxon is a parent and a wife—two things she never thought she’d be - and she writes blogs about her family in the style of Erma Bombeck. In her next life she wants to be a professional snowboarder. An avid walker with a goal to walk every street in her small town, she hits the pavement each morning. To keep herself limber, she does beginner yoga. Not to be taken seriously. The tone is very much sarcastic and silly, with biting banter and crazy shenanigans taking place. It was just what my funny bone wanted for the moment. There's nothing really deep here, but that's fine for when you want just something casual, fun and lighthearted.
Jamie is 37 and a newly minted private detective starting her own business. She has a 'not girlfriend' who she keeps trying to break up with yet keeps turning up again and again, while she is enamoured with two new ladies; her nephews wholesome second-grade teacher and also a sexy police detective.
Jamie ends up investigating a multi dog-knapping caper, which also involves a dog show and some mafia boss type mob folks. There's also a Jewish parrot, and many pet themed antics that had me snort-laughing along the way.
Slapstick comedy with many laugh out loud moments. Just what I needed during a difficult, stressful and sad week. Jamie Bravo's Italian family remind me of Lisa Scottolini's fictional family. Lots of entertaining moments when various mobsters become Jamie's allies thanks to their fond memories of her mother.
The Friedman's talking parrot Lebowitz is my hands down favourite highlight in this merry PI romp. The scenes involving that parrot are brilliant.
As this is the first Jamie Bravo mystery novel, her skills as a PI are limited. She does manage to land a sweet trench coat and some possible mob contacts who should keep her in cases in the future. Juggling a girlfriend she thought she had dumped and two new prospective love interests should also add to books in the future. Her nephew is adorable and a keeper.
As funny as one-liners are, I wish there would have been some substance, moral or point to all the silly goings on. The book lacks heart. Bravo comes across as a woman with no control over her own libido. She reacts to the zany situations rather than acts. I found it hard to empathize with the PI and found the secondary characters were bettered developed than Jamie herself.
Oh wow, this book was so much fun to read! I can't name anything off the top of my head, but I strongly remember stealing books from my mom's bookshelves which were written in a similarly irrelevant style.
Of course, this book is much gayer, and I love it for that.
It does kind of irk me that Jamie can't turf Veronica, and that her love life seems to get from zero to 60 (side-note: I get that everyone mourns differently but the 'her wife died of cancer two years ago, it's fiiiiine' unsettles me).
Also are bi women a thing in this world? It remains to be seen.
Still, I'm definitely gonna check out the other books in this series!
I absolutely loved the Chase Banter series of books by this author and I really wanted to like this one. Unfortunately, although Jamie is a likable character she is also unbelievably annoying.
She goes on about why she shouldn’t do something, then she does it anyway and then moans when it all goes wrong. I suppose this is meant to be funny but it just becomes so ridiculous that it makes you cringe rather than laugh.
I realised this book wasn’t for me when I found myself skipping pages and muttering not again when Jamie has done something else stupid. It’s a pity as when Saxon and Layce get it right they are brilliant.
Worst In Show: A Jamie Bravo Mystery — Layce Gardner and Saxon Bennett (40 chapters) September 23-25, 2021
First book in the series, Jamie is introduced along with a variety of supporting characters, including her gay roommate, her ex, her immediate family, and a potential girlfriend.
Jamie and Travis adopt a dog to go undercover at a purebred show to figure out who is kidnapping dogs.
Great, quick read. Entertaining, comical plot, with a bit of sexy thrown in. And maybe some mobsters too.
Needs a good editor to go through and clean up some spelling and grammatical errors.
Oh, this was so good. So good. Great bit of fun. This book is not meant to be taken seriously. This is a book you go into with a plan to have a good laugh, and I most certainly did. The writing style was perfection for pulling off such a great comedy. All of the characters were fantastic, especially Jamie Bravo.
If you like movies like Step Brothers, or The Other Guys, or Talledega Nights, then you’ll like this book. In fact, I was thinking mid-way through… this should be a movie. You just gotta read it.
Great story love the main character Jamie and the funny situations she finds herself in. The romantic attachments are intriguing too I like the competition for Jamie's attention.
With multiple women after her and her ties to the mob, Jamie's career as a PI is just beginning. Great first episode. Lots of fun and laughs as Jamie solves her first case. Cute little quick read. I love reading Layce's books. They are well written and hilarious.
