In The Stronger, Safer Kind, we meet the boys and focus on Tripp, the lead singer and Scarlett. It is an interesting story about two damaged individuals who recognize the pain in each other. You get lots of forewarning about Scarlett's bad history but it is still quite a surprise when the full extent is revealed. There is a lot of drama with Scarlett’s best friend Andy drunk admitting he is in love with her. Scarlett isn’t sure if she feels the same way about Andy and seems to mourn the loss of their friendship more than the reality of a deeper relationship with him. You can take a good guess at Tripp's pain, but yet again, the extent of it is a surprise. I did think the situation with Andy wrapped up a little too neatly after the surprise of his relationship to Scarlett’s abuser is revealed.
Torn To Pieces, is a much weaker story focusing on Tatum, the drummer and Maggie, Scarlett’s childhood friend. Tatum is a nice and caring guy, but Maggie is disappointing. Yes, she had a bad previous relationship, but her handling of the abusive ex coming back into her life is not realistic. She had ample opportunities to alert someone and get help to get rid of the abusive ex, but instead she just folds and puts up with his crap. Of course, then we would not have had much of a story. Tatum also misjudges the situation when he thinks the ex has just slithered away so politely. But then again, there would not have been much of a story if the ex had left so easily.
Some Kind of Hell is the heartbreaking, frustrating and finally jubilant story of Logan, the shy and quiet bass player, and Annie, a life-long friend of Maggie. She moves in with Maggie to get away from her long term, live in, boyfriend who not only cheated on her, but also got the other woman pregnant. A fact that he loves to throw in her face. Maggie takes Annie to a DownCrash practice where Logan and Annie are immediately drawn to each other. They soon start an intense and physical relationship, with lots of steamy scenes. Annie ends up with a serious problem, just as Logan’s grandfather dies unexpectedly. Logan has a very difficult time losing his Grandfather because they were extremely close. His Grandfather introduced him to playing guitar, which Logan used to escape a painful childhood. Logan pushes everyone away, including Annie, when she needs him the most, while he attempts to deal with the situation.
Eventually, with lots of drama, all of the couples get their acts together and admit their love for each other and their HEA.
Before the book was free, the author lent me an ARC copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. London Casey is a pen name for Karolyn James, and like all her books, this one needs an editor. The book I was loaned contained several typos, missing words and weird sentences. Not as many as some of her other books, but still enough to be aggravating.
This trilogy was soooo good. This book follows the fictional band DownCrash but is also about the women they fall for. Each book is centered around a certain member of the band.
This is a hard review to write because it would be very easy to be a spoiler, so I will be very careful and possibly generic. First I need to say that the author immediately draws you into this book(s). I felt connected to each one and the characters because they are written so believably. She is able to describe the heart pounding moments when you are with someone that is meant to be, she also draws you into the music. I was in a band and they way she describe those special moments when everything clicks was PERFECT.
Each character is very developed and you can relate to them. At times not only was I cursing at the books I laughed out loud and also, almost cried. The THE BOYS OF DOWNCRASH were written beautifully. They are these panties on fire hot men, but also were sensitive, caring, strong, insightful and soulful. Each book had its own issues and did touch on some mature and sensitive subject matter.... like suicide, sexual assault, drinking, etc. So if you are sensitive to tough subjects like that, be warned. However, they were not glamorized and were dealt with, with care and maturity.
I will say I could not put this trilogy down and lost time (and sleep)...but it was worth every second/hour/day etc. I highly recommend these books, just LOVE the way the author wrote them...... I have put her other books on my Need To Read list!
