A Hope-filled Contemporary Christian Novel perfect for you.*Includes a link to a bonus book! All she had was a stunning voice. But he plotted her downfall—and the loss of her faith. When she falls before thousands, will shame win or will faith in Christ build her a new rock-solid ground?Sixty thousand people watched as famous singer Candace Rodriguez fell off the stage while performing the national anthem, wrecking her self-esteem—and her music career—while leaving her manager hot with fury. Now weighing 350 pounds and jilted by her fiancé after the shame of her public fall, can she find another chance at true love? And will her new Christian faith anchor her future hopes?
Former highbrow stock trader, "JB" Patrickson has had enough of life making mockery of his future plans as he lived behind the shadow of his father’s pronouncement that he'd never make it more than selling "chick’n” stock in Kentucky. Proving his father wrong, JB succeeded at the NY Stock Exchange, becoming one of the best US traders...until the market crashed in 2008.
Seven years later and mired in debt, he can't shake the urge that God is leading him down a different path. The path of accepting his grandmother's request to come and help her manage her farm, hundreds of miles away—despite his little-to-nothing knowledge about farming. But first, JB had to confront the fear that he’d fallen so low that toiling with his hands was the only way to put food on the table. What future could God plan for him on a farm?
Twenty years after returning to the US from a fulfilling medical mission in Asia, Dr. and Dr. Mrs. Cantwell gratefully send off two sons to college, purchase a flourishing twenty-acre farm, and prepare to settle into their empty nest stage. But what will they do if God leads one more life into their path, one needing stitches of the soul not of the body? Can they answer His call to service, or will overlooked pain from the past threaten the fragile peace they'd so desperately coaxed into existence in their marriage?

Who doesn't like to curl up with a good book? I certainly have, for as long as I could remember. Next to books, I loved movies just as much, especially if it had action and suspense. No surprise then that I'm now writing romantic suspense, and inspirational stories! I'm grateful to the Lord Jesus for His undeserved mercy and grace. I earned a Masters' Degree in International Affairs from American University, Washington DC; and a Bachelor of Science in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, Ibadan. Professionally, I've been honored with multiple awards for pioneer academic research, student leadership and overall excellence. I'm a member of the American Christian Fiction Writers(ACFW) organization. I pen stories during evenings, weekends, and whenever the food takes too long to cook. Despite the many hurdles I've faced in life, God has been crazy faithful! I live in the beautiful State of Maryland.

This excellent inspirational book covers all the bases: hope, loss,, pain, recovery, renewal, romance, lies, eternal truth. A good story is enhanced by an honest look at the ways God may work in a life, often through pain and silence and time, to victory. It's also a spiritual journey through weight loss, a timely subject.
One thing I noticed is the author kept switching from first to second person. It seemed as though she were trying to inform the reader of a particular fact. Many words were used incorrectly Like the word “rampage” when it should have rampant: “my thoughts were running rampage” and “JB inched a nod.” Just two examples.
She would also switch from a current situation to the past and then back to the present, making it very difficult to follow the flow of the story. Add to that, at one moment the story would be in present tense and then switch to past tense unexpectedly.
Lots of little things took away from the quality like unnecessary words describing something as “frigid cold” or making the statement “he stood to his feet.” (He stood is sufficient or he came to his feet.)
I am a Christ-follower but I don’t like being preached to every other page. Too many “mini-sermons.”
The author seemed to know her stuff when it came to farming, weight loss, and the music industry. I was very impressed with that. I want to encourage her to get a good professional editor. She has great story telling ability, but some of the things I mentioned can be very distracting to the reader.
This book started off so good! God was doing his work in the character's lives. But then the spiritual emphasis seemed to become about things like organic food makes us healthy, weight loss being the most importantly ant aspect of one's life, etc. Eventually the guy abandons the girl without a word, for his own spiritual reasons, leaving her to struggle to guess what is wrong with him. It was his choice to leave without a word. Are you kidding me? God needed him to dump her without a word? I am not sure what foundation of Christianity the author is writing from, but it sure didn't work for me. Love is a choice, not only an emotion. Christianity is also not only about emotions, and does not demand organic food/farming.
So many things about this book bothered me. Too much emphasis on her losing weight to look good instead of just focusing on her being healthy. Also who wants a guy who won't date you until you are skinny? Some odd religious views presented also and I read mostly Christian books. I won't bother with the second one.
I really wanted to like this story. It was really slow. I didn't really feel any energy between Candace and JB. There was too much about her weight loss, more like a how to book not a novel.
What happens when your world falls apart all of a sudden? That is the theme of this book. Candace Rodriguez is a top ranking singer associated with a record label. Six months ago, she accepted Christ as her Savior. Slowly, her perspectives changed and she changed her behavior accordingly. It didn't take long before she saw that her music future would have to change as well. Then one day she fell off a stage. She realized at that moment she had to take her future in hand both physically and spiritually.
God takes control and provides a way for Candace to get away to a farm in Maryland owned by a doctor couple where she can get rest and begin to regroup. While there, her faith grows as she waits for the Lord's leading for her future as a singer. She's under pressure to create a whole new line up of songs that are fitting with her new found faith in Christ. So she begins to undertake the task of writing enough songs to fill a new album. But her muse has fled. In the meantime, she meets JB Patrickson, who is also pulling up roots to begin life again after a brief stint on Wall Street as a trader. When the housing bubble crashed, so did he.
JB has a history which makes him a bit gun shy around Candace. He is working hard to make the farm he is managing for his grandmother more prosperous. Their relationship starts out slow, but eventually they become good friends. Candace is trying to become physically healthy as well as spiritually healthy. She works hard to lose weight and JB has become her supporter along with the good doctors.
What I like best about this book is the great way the author allows spiritual growth to show up in the characters' lives without being overly talkative about it. Instead of talking it out, the author shows us how Candace grows. I understand Candace's issue with weight loss too, as I struggle with the same problem. Her hard work was inspiring to me. I felt this was all good writing.
In spite of working the book out in first person, the different voices were done very well. I usually find the first person use irritating and sometimes immature, but I think I was about half way through the book before I realized that I hadn't even paid attention to the voice. I found that surprising. For once, the reader is privy to the thought process of a person whose heart is being turned to God and maintaining a mature attitude about it. I found that refreshing. I also like the moderate amount of tension built into the story. It wasn't extreme, but it kept the story moving forward nicely. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series.
When Candace falls through the stage at the Superbowl game she is supposed to sing at her humiliation is complete. But that was only her beginning of her fall from fame. When her humiliation goes viral and her record label and her fiance want to set her free, she cries out to God for help. When Candace gets an invitation to a farm in Maryland, she can't imagine that this New Yorker would ever be caught on a farm. When JB goes to a party for his grandmother at the Cantwell farm he can't believe his eyes when he meets one of the guests. This is an absolutely beautiful story of learning to love yourself and that God wants to give you your dreams if you will totally trust Him. Taking place in the countryside of Maryland surrounded by farms, forests and mountains is a wonderful place to live. The Cantwell's are a wonderful couple that are so full of love and compassion you can't help but happy that Candace has them. JB also has much to learn as he tries to get over his past and be proud of who he is. This book will inspire you to go for your dreams, no matter what they are or how much work you have to do to get there. I absolutely loved it and look forward to reading more by this author and in this series. I received a free download of this book from the publisher, this review is totally my own honest opinion.
My first of Joy Ohagwu series of " After" of which I purchased 3 book series. Candace story of a young woman's struggle with her new faith walk her weight in a career that tried to break her! Candace meets Dr. and Mrs.Dr. Cantrell her main supports until she meets JB who has struggled of his own . Canada's also has the support of her brother Matt, also her manager in her music career! A career that's trying to break her because she has accepted the Lord and is struggling with her weight challenge ( @ 5ft 8in she is 350+)', but faith and strong support she turns it all around. The story begins with a fall at the NFL where she is to sing at the beginning ( American Anthem), but the stage claps, and Candances world seems too fall apart her contracts are cancelled, her fiance ( Ray) walks out ,over the phone. This begins her climb with the support her brother Matt the Cantwells inviting her to their farm where she meets and falls in love with JB! Candace starts eating right and a work out program! However, most important of all is her faith walk! Candace made a choice to trust in and follow The Lord!
This was a truly inspirational read. In this story you can feel Candace’s struggle with the obstacles of her career, weight, and love. The decision she made to follow God and his plan for her was like a blossoming flower, beautiful! Seeing where God lead her was uncomfortable at times, but became rewarding for her, and to me as a reader. Joy, your writings have given me hope. I don’t always hear words from God, it’s more of a strong emotion that tells me I need to do something. Reading not just this book, but others too, I’m finding that what is going on in me, is God working through me. Thank you God for giving Joy the words to write this book and others, so those like me can be inspired, transformed, or awakened to your influence in our lives. My you continue to bless her through her journey, and provide those like me words to give encouragement to her. We all need each other Lord, to fight the evil that lurks in the darkness waiting for a weakness. In Jesus’ Holy Name ~
I've had this book for a while and I've heard about this author, yet I've not taken the opportunity to read this series of books. Now, I'm glad I did. This story had so many parts in which I could identify with. The main character struggled with something I, and probably many people, struggle with. The pressures of being overweight. I really loved how this author introduced wonderful healthy things to do to be physically fit. It made me want to try some. I also appreciated the fact that it took work and a whole year to change and also that it wasn't a fast, quick fix. Like many things in our lives, we need time to heal and change in not only our physical, but our mental, emotional, and spiritual parts of who we are. This story shows Candace needing those changes and the support of wonderful people. I want to thank the author for writing such an encouraging story! I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Candance, while performing the national anthem before sixty thousand people, fell off the stage. Weighing 350 pounds, and a new Christian faith, she forges ahead.
JB Patrickson succeeded as one of the best US traders until the market crashed. God leads him down a different past. He accepts his grandmother's request to help manage her farm.
Twenty years after returning from a medical mission in Asia, Dr. and Mrs. Cantwell purchase a twenty-acre farm.
How will all these lives intersect on Day Spring Farms?
I was drawn into the story from the tragic beginning. Interest in the main characters formed questions in my mind. What's going to happen to them? How will they make it through all this change? Will they be happy again. I loved the way the chapters went back and forth with the different characters. God weaves the lives of his believers together. The author brought this out in a remarkable way.
I recommend this story to anyone that is going through any type of struggle not just weight loss & if we focus on Jesus & allow his plan to override our plan for our life how truly amazing our life could be (this is biblical). The author/story is not preachy about Organic foods as mentioned in a previous review which left me hesitant to read. The story does mention Organic foods as this story’s backdrop is about characters that do live on a farm so talking/mentioning organic foods is to be expected. I really look forward to continuing w the Series as the author created a strong female character that has flaws but overcomes them with the help of Jesus.
"All things are possible through God who strengthens me". Candace was a popular singer who faced humiliating ridicule when she fell off the stage singing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl. Her weight was 350 pounds and became a laughing point to her followers plus the fact she had recently become a Christian and changed the type of music she would perform. Would this be the end of her career? An elderly couple she had met and helped just before the embarrassing fall, approached her with an offer to visit them anytime. Since her recording companies new leader was cancelling her contract, she decided now was the time to take the Cantwell's up on their offer. Her time and struggles to get her life back will amaze and inspire anyone who is fighting struggles of their own.
Joy Ohagwu writes such fabulously inspiring books. Her characters are well-developed and can be easily imagined as real people with real problems. I love reading about the struggles of her characters and how they find peace once they have learned to listen to and follow God. Although fiction, her books have great scriptural basis and contain good advice from which we can all benefit. I'm looking forward to reading this series in its entirety. I highly recommend any of Ms Ohagwu books to anyone who enjoys Christian fiction.
I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading the next in this series! I admired Candace's beliefs and will power to hold on to her belief and and to go after what she wanted and needed for her health and healing! JB was God sent from the very beginning!! I didn't like his short departure, but I am glad he showed up when it really counted! I do believe people who opens their minds and hearts to this series will enjoy this read as well! This showed real life issues without the harsh language and sex. I do recommend this book!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book! Among other things, it taps into societies perception towards individuals (I'm referring to the main character, Candace) and even our perception towards ourselves. The different characters touch you with their individual stories and God's hand over their lives. I liked how it was relatable...had me upset ( I recall getting a tad emotional at some point), laughing and excited.
Beautifully written christian novel. The struggles that Candace faced as she started on her new walk with Christ. Having the fortitude to say no to singing lyrics that were death to her soul, and being obedient to God, God proved himself faithful. She left her old life and a new life was restored to her including a new love. This book is a must read and it's definitely worthy of 5 stars.
There is nothing like getting ahold of a book that is wonderfully written and transparent! There well thought out plot, carefully divulged details and happy ending all have me eagerly wanting to dig into the next book! I completely recommend this for anyone needing a glimpse into the reality of the Faith Walk.
enjoyed reading this story about two broken people recovering their wholeness by relying on Jesus. I recommend this author to any reader looking for an enjoyable read. I have devoured several of this author's and and look forward to more excellent reads by her.
Candace had the world at her feet., till she crashed on stage. With her career in hold, her engagement off. She takes a trip at the request of a stranger to stay with them. She gets a start to her life. She learns many lessons as she straightens her life ,her soul and her body.
This story is about God’s hand on certain people yet when looking back it includes all of us. Finding His purpose in your life needs commitment in reading His Word and having a close relationship with Him. When doing so Candace and JB found true love and a joint walk with the Father. At times you just need to let go and let Him have His way.
I enjoyed reading about Candace and how she grows in her walk with Christ. She had a lot of problem happen to her in the beginning, but as she learns to trust fully she overcomes. I highly recommend to everyone that likes clean stories that inspire.
I liked the story, but the editing is atrocious. Lots of mistakes throughout, but still a very sweet story of hope and courage with some really inspiring thoughts mixed in. Hope they will fix the simple grammatical errors and do an update
A beautiful, well written novel about overcoming our problems through God's mighty love and intervention. As a Christian, I needed to read this story. It uplifted my spirit. Can't wait to read Jabez.
It was so bad I had a really hard time getting into it and couldn't even finish it. I rarely set aside a book once I've started it. I can't figure out how anyone thought it was comparable to Francine Rivers; not even close.
There are a lot of gramatical errors in this book. Even after contacting the author & tell her exactly where the problems are it has not been updated. The story was OK but I won't read anymore in this series.
I enjoy Ohagwu’s books for their Christian content & her character development. She shows the ups & downs in the lives of ordinary people who are Christians as well as what happens in the lives of “famous” people who try to use their talents & hold true to Christian beliefs. Thanks Joy!
This book kept me seated. I dreamt about it, I thought about it. It teaches on recklessly trusting God, and that's just what we need. I do hope I'll meet with Dr. Mrs cantwell soon. I can't believe she's a fictional character
Well done! The characters are so real and believable it makes you keep turning the pages. I loved the fact that they all had real problems to deal with and struggled within themselves as they helped others.
