This does explain the start of drawing characters, but it doesn’t explain properly.
The proportions are typically incorrect. Her main problem is that she didn’t use references (which is super important!!!). That’s why her characters look off.
Personally, I’m not a fan of this art style. (It reminds me of the very visually busy Karneval.)
At the very end she teaches you how to draw using Manga Studio but she doesn’t say one of the more important things I’ve learn by trial and error - flipping the canvas. It helps to point out things that are incorrect or just look weird. She apparently doesn’t flip the canvas, by the look of her art.
What I found really funny was the “Dynamic Poses” section. Every. Single. Pose. was not dynamic. They were the flattest and most boring drawings. Please don’t reference from that!
It’s an okay place to start from. Some of the tips are incorrect but you can tell the author really tried. I absolutely suggest reading other how to books and comics/manga for better references. Don’t just use this!!!
This is a well thought out book. Sophie Chan has lined things up and laid them out so that anyone interested in learning the basics of drawing Manga characters can get started by following her simple step-by-step instructions and drawings. She shows you what her work looked like when she first started, before she matured and refined her style. That takes courage and confidence. She confined her instructions to faces and figures for characters. She didn't go into any scenery. I think this allowed her to stay focused on the characters, which is a big early step in preparing a Manga book. You have to develop a character and draw it out in many positions and with many expressions. If you're looking to develop your own Manga book, this just might be the book for you.
