Dragonfly

Rate this book
Sheltered by an overprotective family, Amy Sager—a shy twenty something poet from Canada—just wanted to break out of her shell and be free to live her own life. What better way to assert her newfound independence than by moving to San Francisco?

However, when she meets a tall, blood-drenched stranger she gets more than she bargained for. Jackie is everything she should never want. Violence, lies, and even murder taint this strange man, but she finds herself irresistibly drawn to him…like a moth to flame.
When their relationship strains her loyalty and his livelihood, it isn't long before violence consumes her independence and Amy’s quest for freedom turns into just another story of a good girl caught on the wrong side of the tracks, too far gone to turn back.

I've read the previous unpublished version of Dragonfly over the summer. So I wasn't in the hugest hurry to reread the new shiny published version.
So it's been sitting on my kindle, waiting for me to finish up a few books I've previously started.
And OH MY GOD WHY DID I WAIT SO LONG?!
I finished Dragonfly in one sitting. Four hour; no food, no bathroom break, no nothing expect Dragonfly.

Lana Sky has done it again! I've yet to discover a author who can pull off being a poet, ballerina, heiress, etc, so flawlessly and believable.

Her uncanny ability to write interesting and love-able characters. She can write a naïve, virginal, weak heroine that you will absolutely adore and relate to. And every hero she creates automatically gets put into my book-boyfriend folder.

Now onto the actual review of this book!

It's getting to the point that I have some clear expectations where a book by this author is concerned. Lots of sexual tension, interesting dark and gritty settings, and hot hot sex.

I really liked Sky's character; Jackie in this story. The dark-gangster-antihero was an interesting characteristic that gives the reader the background to understanding why he is the man that he is today.

Amy is a sheltered, innocent, poet living in the seedy area of China Town, San Francisco. Amy spent her life doing what she's been told. She is sick and tired of being passive. She wants to make her own choices. I loved watching her let herself go and just feel with him. It took a lot for her to stop worrying about what others might think and fear.

This book was spot on with a interesting plot and just enough steam. From the start, their attractation is strong. The sexual tension kept growing and growing!

My only complaint with this book is;
There wasn't enough sex! I needed more steamy, dirty scenes.
And it ended way too early! Don't get me wrong, this didn't end in a cliffhanger. But there's definitely a "unfinished" feeling to this book. I know there's going to be a sequel "Moth". But there's been no announcements to when that will be released.

The safety score of this book is completely safe! No OW or OM drama. The only thing I can see where someone might have a problem is that the hero definitely pushes away. But so does the heroine. Equal pushing away.

This book earn 10+++++++ stars!

"Blood. He reeks of it.
Drops of red falling,
Staining the darkness he hides within.
He's a shadow.
Violence consumes his heart—
The dragon sleeps,
Awoken in the night to burn.

Chronically shy and nerdy poet, Amy Sager, is desperately trying to assert some authority over her life. Moving countries, living alone and trying to stay out from under her police brother's thumb. Somehow, the shy asthmatic ends up stitching up multiple wounds of gangster, Jackie, and in doing so ends up tangled in his world.

This was just really kind of weird. There were so many parts I absolutely adored, but there were things that I felt ruined the potential. I loved the main characters, although I felt like they were missing some dimension. I wanted more to their characters, so I could feel more emotion.

The 'angsty' scenes (multiple beatings and kidnappings, for example) didn't create much emotion and the storyline needed a little bit more to it. I would probably pick the second one up, just to find out where the author was planning to take this. Some parts became glaringly obvious by the end, but I'm intrigued to see what the second book would be filled with.

The ending (if you can call it that) did nothing to actually wrap up the story. Even if there is supposed to be a sequel, I expect something more substantial than the character falling asleep. The way the book was written was also strange, with time jump chapters and a lack of story development.

I just wish this story had a little more to it, it just felt lackluster in most aspects, good bones but watered down.

I have just finished reading this book and I was sitting there with my mouth open like, this is it? This is how the story ends? Thank god I read another reviewers' post, that there will be another book to this story!! There are soooo many unanswered questions!
The blurb was the first thing that immediately drew me in and then I was hooked. The story line was intense and didn't disappoint. The hero was a complete mystery and I loved that. He is also Asian, which is great! I will definitely be reading Ms Sky' other works.

An amazing, intense, and dark ride from start to finish. You get lost with Amy as she discovers parts of herself she never knew she had and crave more the same way she demands Jackie and his world. Highly sensual and highly recommended.

Can't wait!

I really like reading Lana's stories. She works hard and I know she is a person who doesn't give up on the things that count. I appreciate her being brave enough to publish. People (probably like me lol) won't always like every book but, it shouldn't matter what we think. If you actually worked on something, you should be proud of what you've accomplished.

And maybe I don't say it enough but, I love when people put their heart out and take a risk. And as cliché as it sounds, I want everyone, like Lana or whoever, to do what they love.

If you love it I'm sure I will love it too. :)

Edit: 12-22-16

THANK YOU SUEBEE for the gift of this book. HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO EVERYONE!

Dragonfly. How do I even begin to describe Dragonfly?

This book was freaking amazing. It definitely makes my top 3 best books I have read this year list. Actually, it ties for first place.

Dragonfly was so, so, so good. Having read the first draft beforehand I knew this book was going to be amazing. The revised version totally blew me out of the freaking water. I am in love with it. I’ve already pre-ordered my official copy. I have to have it. It’s so good.

The first thing I have to do is applaud Lana Sky. Not just for the amazing book, but for Jackie. Most of the books these days have white characters, and that’s okay but I can’t help but want some diversity. Lana Sky delivers on that. Jackie is Asian and I freaking love it.

Dragonfly explores the life of sheltered Amy Sager and her look into the dangerous world of gangsters and the seedy underbelly of the fictional Dragon District in San Francisco. She dives in and describes the world so beautifully and vividly and I love that. I love how she can make a scene come to life in just a few words.

If you can’t tell by the glowing reviews I have written before, I love everything Sky has written. Her writing style is unique and it leaves its mark on the world. She describes the places and people so well, it feels like you are there amongst the crowds and with the buildings. She has a wonderful way with words that I have never seen before and can only hope to have myself.

Anyway, back to Dragonfly.

The story is told backwards and I really, really like that. The way Lana writes it doesn’t make it confusing. This isn’t your traditional love story. Actually, I don’t there is any love there. More like hate and sexual attraction.

Amy is… She is very sheltered. She keeps to herself and only ventures outside if necessary. You can imagine her surprise when she is sort of kidnapped by man that bleeds all over her armchair. And you can bet that Amy manages to make a poem out of it.

If said once I have said this a million times. This book was freaking amazing.

I suggest two things.

Get the freaking book.

And.

READ MORE OF LANA’S BOOKS!! You’ll thank me later.

I received an ARC of "Dragonfly" from Lana Sky, in exchange for an honest review.

I can honestly say, that although I received an ARC of this, I'd promptly pre-ordered it once it was available. I was NOT not going have the official copy.

HOLY COW, I just finished this seriously dark read by miss Lana Sky, WOW, I'm blown away. I'd previously read a snippet via the Malice newsletters & was intrigued then. But now, having read it to it's end..... I'm not really sure how I'm going to put into words, just how FREAKING AMAZING this book was. I just FLOVED Jackie as a character, not only is he a mystery, but that mystery unravels slowly once he learns to trust (although I'm not sure that is the right word) in Amy. Then Amy, sheltered, drowning Amy, seems to fall apart & grow into something new, something although coping with the violence around her, is still her. Damn I'm not sure if that makes sense.

I loved how we start in the now & then work our way from the first meeting with Jackie, until we get to the present again. What a ride it was, filled with the secrets of both, finding out the truths, the hidden underbelly of San Fransisco soon rushes forth... dragging you in, until you can't beathe along with Amy. Until you too are caught in the web.

If you FLOVE dark, gritty reads, then this is for you. I FLOVED it, I couldn't put it down, I wish it was longer.

Short, and bittersweet. One of my favourites by Lana Sky. It's instantly engaging, without becoming out-of-control action packed. It's realistic, and gritty. Ultimately the ending will not satisfy, if you'd like a read about underworld crime being brought down by a heroic protagonist, and justice being served, look away.
This is a speak no evil, hear no evil, see no evil kind of story. The protagonist is aware of the danger that comes with knowing the love interest, and chooses to remain ignorant because of the potential harm that knowing could have. Either on their relationship, her physical life, and her psyche.
This is story that takes you through the steps of introspective psychological shut down. When information that is undoubtedly awful presents itself right before your eyes, you make that decision to not acknowledge it. Which is what this story is about. It's the protagonist learning to control that which is effectively, out of her hands by just ignoring it. Which to be honest, shows much more strength then jumping into battle.
It's written really well, and despite how anticlimactic this review makes the story seem, I've never finished a book so satisfied with ALL the characters and their arcs.

Finally sat down and read Dragonfly by Lana Sky. I will say I have pretty mixed thoughts on this book.

For one I know this is one of Lana's earliest works and before she started exploring some heavier and darker themes. This one only touched the surface of what she tends to do.
For another thing I felt disappointed at the end because there was so so much going on in the plot that ended up never being addressed so the ending lacked that omph!

Granted as someone who follows Lana Sky on a lot of social media platforms she herself has mentioned wishing taking this book farther. While she had planned on updating the book, the new plot ended up being so much different than she one she decided to make a totally different book with all new characters "MOTH" will be the new title and its set to come out sometime in August. Let me tell you I am very excited to see what happens in this new plot.

I still recommend checking out Amy and Jackie's story for those who are fans of Lana's

5 Stars, a Captivating Storyline...
This was a really good book, a different story line which captured my attention. Amy, the beautiful poet and Jackie, the good looking, I am still not sure who he is and who he works for. Lots of mystery going on with him. But I came away with he is one tough guy. The author does a great job with her character development and their emotions. I felt myself cringing when Amy was headed towards danger several times. I love Lana Sky's books as each one I have read have been so different, I never know what to expect so I am on the edge of my seat as I turn the pages. I highly recommend this book to you.

This book was phenomenal. Short, yet thrilling, it packs a bitter and impactful punch to the reader. Despite a protagonist that fell a bit flat, I am hopeful that this only means her characterization can continue to grow in a following book, and the plot and beautiful prose more than made up for it. While dark romance was not generally a category that I followed with, this book was my intense debut to not only the genre but to the rest of this author's work, with whom each is more brilliant than the last.

It was an amazing book. Lana Sky is really a wonderful and very talent writer. But the ending kinda disappointed me

While the book was really entertaining the ending left me to be quite disappointed and I felt kinda....not whole, like some part of me was missing. I wonder if this is a stand alone because it really needs an second book. Knowing Lana I have a feeling that there won't be. She likes to end books like this...unfinished.

Amazing!
Lana Sky has done it again. Her books just keep getting better and better and they are all great for different reasons. Dark Romance is becoming my favorite genre and this book is definitely dark. This book entails the story of Amy, a shy poet, and Jackie, the ruggedly handsome criminal that Amy just can't stop thinking about. Their story is addictive and you just can't help but want to read it all in one sitting. 100% recommend to those of us that love dark romance.

Lana Sky has a talent. A talent for starting a really good story, one that grabs you by the throat. And then leaving you after that first book....with a hangover! Because there’s no sequel,no closure.

This story is another one of those. So,unless you’re ready to get sucked in and be left with a bookhangover,i suggest you wait until you have the next part of this series in your library!
And that’s the only reason i only gave 3 stars to this one,the fact that i’m left hanging.....

Another great read by Lana Sky. This is the third book I've read of hers and again I loved it. It's dark, gritty and addictive, but all her books are. They you leave wanting more. You can't help but fall deeper and deeper into the story, page by page. She has a way of wrapping you up nice and tight with each page you turn. She make boy boys so good.

Read on Wattpad.
Beautifully dark, guilty pleasure meets morbid fascination, beautifully written, a little Angel Heart, a little David Finscher, very cinematic, quite graphic too, but with the poetic twist that Abel Ferrarra sorely lacks. Me likey, very much so.

Jackie and Amy seem like the most unlikely pair when they meet at a poetry reading and things escalate from there.
There is so much action in this book that I didnt want to put it down.
Lana Sky's books are so riveting and contain strong men who have an aura of mystery around them.

I loved this book. Amy even when she was terrified she still showed bravery. She didn't back down from Jackie, she fought him on everything. I loved that she tried to help those around her, even getting into fights for them. She was everything a heroine should be. Brave, smart, shy and a fighter.

What I'd expected: yet another cliched romance story that includes the BROODING BAD BOY and an "innocent" and pure girl turned bad. And of course, lots of steamy scenes.

What I didn't expect:

-actually liking the Big Bad Boy and the innocent/pure girl.
-a 95% original plot

Want more review? Okay, here it is:

Amy, the MC, is awesome. Jack, the sort of abusive love interest, is awesome (and he's a Chinese. You rarely find non-white love interest in books). The supporting characters are awesome. Basically, all the characters are awesome. Writing is FANTASTIC.

The only thing I didn't like about Dragonfly is the ending. I felt it's way too abrupt.

Other than that, Dragonfly is FANTASTICALLY AWESOME. You absolutely have to read it.

Drangofly fuses an irresistible dose of mystery and splashed episodes of violence, with hints of romance.

Shamelessly, Amy and Jackie chemistry is explosive. Igniting right off, in an inicial glimpse of the present, just before Lana resets the story's timeline and takes us back to the moment where they first met.

From there, fascinated, Amy blindly pushes herself more and more through the dangerous webs of Jamie's world.

Summing in an unexpected abrupt ending which only thickens the question if Amy's choses truly brought her to her so wished freedom.

Can't wait for more!
