“An action packed fantasy sure to please fans of Morgan Rice’s previous novels, along with fans of works such as The Inheritance Cycle by Christopher Paolini…. Fans of Young Adult Fiction will devour this latest work by Rice and beg for more.” --The Wanderer, A Literary Journal (regarding Rise of the Dragons) The #1 Bestselling series, with over 400 five star reviews on Amazon! A REALM OF SHADOWS is book #5 in Morgan Rice’s bestselling epic fantasy series KINGS AND SORCERERS (which begins with RISE OF THE DRAGONS, a free download)! In A REALM OF SHADOWS, Kyra finds herself in the midst of a burning capital, attacked by a host of dragons, clinging for life. With her beloved homeland destroyed, The Flames down and the trolls pouring in, Kyra must urgently quest to Marda to retrieve the magic weapon before it is too late—even if it takes her into the very heart of darkness. Duncan finds himself trapped, with the others, in the burning capital, and he uses all his wits to find his men, attempt escape, and rally his forces to regroup and attack Pandesia. Across the kingdom, Merk sails with King Tarnis’ daughter through the Bay of Death as they abandon the Tower of Kos and sail for the warrior isle of Knossos. Pursued by Vesuvius and his army of trolls, crossing the world’s most treacherous waters, they know they have little chance to reach the isle, and even less chance of escape. Dierdre and Marco survive the tidal wave that destroyed Ur only to find their beloved city under water. With everyone they knew and loved lost and dead, they must pick up the pieces and journey to the one person they know who is left Kyra. Alec, meanwhile sails back for Escalon with the people of The Lost Isles, holding the precious sword that might just change everything. But none expect to encounter a land destroyed, a land that is now teeming with dragons. With its strong atmosphere and complex characters, A REALM OF SHADOWS is a sweeping saga of knights and warriors, of kings and lords, of honor and valor, of magic, destiny, monsters and dragons. It is a story of love and broken hearts, of deception, ambition and betrayal. Regaining that momentum from book 2! Another great read/listen 🎧. Action packed and getting closer to the end of this war. I just hope Duncan is smarter than Ra thinks he is in the last book!! Looking forward to seeing how this wraps up.
No Morgan Rice. No. No. No! Woman you can weave a wonderful story but you get too bogged down trying to make everything over the top. Reminds of kids playing a make believe game where one says I've got 10 thousand swords, then the next one says oh yeah, well I've got 10 million swords! Then there are the missing words and too many words in sentences. And lest I forget, restating the same thing over and over to make a point. And mixing up characters during conversations. But now you've made a real whopper of a mistake. In Chapter 22 of the preceding book, A Force of Valor, you have Kyle captured by Vesuvious in some kind of magical net and carried away as his prize. Then you turn around in A Realm of Shadows and have Kyle fighting the exact same battle for hours on end in Chapter 6, facing imminent death and being saved when he hides under a shield as dragons come and incinerate everyone miraculously sparing his life! You need to get an editor since you obviously can't remember what you've previously written. Jumping around the timeline of your own story is confusing enough. But completely canging your mind about a character's outcome after it's already been written and presumably published is just wrong. NO!
This series is terrible. Seriously. I know, you're thinking "well then why are you reading it??" Here's why: I'm on vacation, I have a limited number of things on my Kindle, and that coupled with my general OCD is enough to make me power through. But it's okay, because at this point I'm laughing. It's like a horrible B-movie, and I love those - watch and laugh.
As I've mentioned on earlier books in the series, this author desperately needs an editor. Both because there are horrible grammatical errors, but also because this book has so much repetition, I'm just stunned. During fight scenes, you can read some variation of the word "shriek" 6 times in 4 sentences. Something like this:
Kyra shrieked as she felt pain in her back. Shrieking, she spun around and stabbed her attacker with a shriek. He shrieked and fell to the ground, dead."
I'm totally not exaggerating, either.
Half the chapters in this series ends with some character or other facing imminent death. With some (I'm looking at you, Dierdre), each time they express how it is the worst death they can imagine. This is particularly laughable, because when we first met Dierdre, for example, she was rescued from a dungeon, where she was repeatedly raped and tortured. Later, she nearly falls to her death, where she thinks it is the most horrible death she can imagine.
... Really??
A couple chapters later, she is on the verge of drowning, and she laments that she cannot imagine a worse death. And then a couple chapters later, she's on the verge killed by a charge from the enemy army... and again, she expresses her fear over it being the worst death she can imagine.
At this point, I was just laughing so hard I was crying.
This series has untrained children flailing around with weapons, and felling enemies by the dozens... when we've seen those same enemies destroying fully trained adult warriors. It has TSTL characters making the same mistakes over and over and over. The main character makes the exact same poor decision 3 times, and is on the verge of death 3 times - fortunately, the plot armor is strong in this series, because despite every other chapter ending with imminent death, no one dies - and then later congratulates herself on always following her instincts.
A random boy/ancient mysterious warrior (Kyle) constantly drops everything and runs - across the continent - to her rescue. I don't know why he ever leaves her side. And then, adding insult to injury, in the end of the last book, the author had Kyle rescue Kyra, planting himself between two charging armies to rescue her idiot ass (and I don't know why they just, like, paused and let him do that)... and that situation ends (in book 4) with Kyle being captured by one of the enemies after he kills thousands of soldiers (not an exaggeration... thousands. Everyone in this book kills hundreds of soldiers on a bad day... thousands when they are having a great one.). The last we see him in book 4, he's netted and carried off by the lead troll, Vesuvius.
In this book, that fight is rewritten. I guess the author decided she didn't want him to be captured, so we saw the same fight, starting up with him sending the idiot rescued heroine off on her horse. He fights, kills thousands... and then the dragons come. He hides under his mountain of bodies, to not be killed by the dragons, and the trolls are forced to retreat. And Kyle just goes on his merry way, free, as if none of the end of book 4 ever happened.
What the fuck?
And that's not the first time this has happened in this series. The last time, the Troll leader (Vesuvius) died attacking Kyra and Duncan's fort. We saw the woefully undermanned soldiers left to hold Velios charge to meet the Troll army, and Duncan's right hand guy die tragically, taking Vesuvius with him.
Next book, Vesuvuis was leading the army in an attack elsewhere.
I honestly just assumed that it was a copyedit error, because this series is filled with them. But after the author pulled this crap with Kyle, I can only assume that she changed her mind about killing him off, and decided to just pretend it never happened. Apparently that's a-okay in her book.
And honestly, it's a shame. The core of this story could be a good one, but it is so overwhelmed with repetition, poor editing, and TSTL characters that the good idea at the center is just wasted. This series is a shitshow.
Buku kelima dari siri novel Kings and Sorcerers, bergenre high fantasy (sword and sorcery).

Basura total.
There are so many battles battle in this story that I feel exhausted even if the characters don't, but then fantasy gives us these fantastical scenarios - entertaining, too.
I was given this book and am so grateful because it was enjoyable and it's great to know what is happening. It's fast-paced and brimming with imaginative creatures alongside sword and sorcery.
The multiple character plot is coming together and mysteries are revealed...who will survive, we can only guess. There was a huge mistake regarding Kyle as he was left in a different predicament in the last book to this one, however, a good editing would solve this and other errors, too. He is such a fascinating character.
Nevertheless, my enjoyment level upon reading this series is high and I would definitely recommend it.
The first set of books started well, now I am left with the impression the story line is been dragged out, there is one more book to read, it would I believe have been better to have turned it into 3 book series rather than 6.
It's like watching a film that you know went straight DVD knowing it's rubbish but some deep part of you is hoping for a hidden gem. Unfortunately this isn't, you end up looking in the mirror shaking your head thinking "why".
In my honest opinion, this series started off fantastically. By the third or fourth book in the series it just seems to go completely down hill and lose elements of a great story. The character development is practically non-exsistsant, the beats of the story are off, and some of the plot is just unnaturally forced. Not to mention according to my reading, Vesivious (Sorry if i misspelled his name), the troll king, has died by the hands of several different characters at least six times, but suddenly hes alive in the next book or chapter. The plot seems like the author just gave up halfway through the series and was just trying to meet deadlines or rush the work out. In this book it isn't until the roughly the middle of the book that it starts getting back the beats and the momentum that is present within the entire first book. But do not get me started on all of the grammer, spelling mistakes, and flat out using the wrong character's names in sentences where they don't belong.
I have a huge bone to pick with Kyra's character developement. At the beginning of this series she is stubborn, strong willed, a fighter, and doesn't let gender roles dictate what she can or cannot achieve. Its a story of a girl who fights for what is right and for the love of her family. But, wow, did she completely fall off the character rails. (I want to make a quick note here, I am perfectly fine with having characters fail to make the right decision even more than once, but they *must* have character development that reflects those decisions.) Kyra makes the same mistake nearly four times in the same book and never grows from that point. It was so aggrivating to read, as i had hoped she would have some type of development, but its like the author wanted to make sure the character had invincible plot armor. Every single time she made the same decision to try and save her father, she would get mortally wounded and nearly die, but then suddenly she just - poof - fine. There was no hesitation, no thinking things through, no using the vast intelligence she started the series off with, just the same choice and the same consequences. And in the end she still got to save her father and for what? Just so he could die somewhere else? No she doesn't care about that, at all. Just wanted to save him the one time. Don't even get me started on the forced subplot of Kyra and Kyle. It's like she looses all the great character triats from the beginning of the series all because her "soulmate" shows up. Then Kyle is just used to keep Kyra alive and try to fix some plot holes in the rest of the story.
I don't think I'll be buying the last book in this series, nor will I be reading it and leaving a review. my journey with this series ends with this last book. Overall, I'm pretty dissapointed with the series and believe that the author could do so much better. (Also please have either a proofreader or a beta reader to help with editing.) I gave this book 3 stars, due to the fact that it had started to gain a little momentum from the first book and find a good rythm for the story beats, but it was too late in the book for it to be any higher.

There is a reason I've only given this four stars and I'll get to it shortly.
This fifth volume in this series is just as good - story wise - as the others and takes the protagonists into more exciting adventures and dangers. I am eager to read Book 6 and will do so A.S.A.P. I have rapidly become a fan of Morgan Rice & her writing and given, the amount of books available, I could fill my reading time up with nothing else! Anyway.....
Back to that rating. I read this eBook on my Kobo and I have to ask: who the hell proof reads these manuscripts? One or two typos slipping through I could understand but there are myriad mistakes in this edition - from grammatical errors to flat out getting character names completely wrong. The message is simple: get it right! We're expected to pay for the books so show your patrons the respect they deserve!!!!!
Halfway through and the details are really starting to get to me.
How did Kyle get out of the magic Net? Why were their dozens of large boats at abandoned at the tower AFTER it had been evacuated in a super inhospitable place no one but the watchers go? Enough to be called a "fleet" and hold a "nation" of trolls. Why would anyone store a fleet of boats at what is perhaps the most inhospitable place? If the weather was as described the boats would have been demolished just being "tied" off. How did the trolls learn to sail large ships (had to be large ships to hold a "nation worth in dozens of boats)? And how did the trolls learn to sail them in waters that even experience sailers would not be able to?
These are just some of the details that are bothersome. As the series goes on the details get worse or totally overlooked.
Well, what do you know! Progress. If you are in this series to follow the plot and characters introduced in the first volume, then make your way straight to volume 5. Fot three volumes we watch characters wander around and "die" at the end of each chapter only to be swept out of harm's way by deus ex machina usually in the form of vicious pets, or Kyle or other characters we left on their own cliffhanger in the previous chapter. This book summarises all that in paragraph and proceeds to repeat the same formula, but luckily this time, the plot actually progresses.
True to her storyline , Morgan Rice has one battle after another happening in the war to rule Escalon. Who will win remains to be seen. Determined armies of Pandesians, Trolls and Escalonites fight for victory over one another in a seemingly endless battle of wits. However, treachery serves as a major obstacle to those trying to gain their freedom from the tyrannical leader of the Pandesian army.
I enjoy the story but hate the editing snafus that abound throughout.
This book has so many twists and turns. Over the period from 1st book to this, the journey has been fantastic. So many angles, so many characters and so many twists. Writer has done a tremendous job of putting everything together. All the characters built are in a good shape and hats off to the writer for that.
Hope to end the story soon as it has been a big stretched story. In book 5, at some places story gets too lengthy and boring. However at the end of book its on track again... Nice book. Looking forward for the last one.
I am a nerd... I like nerdy things. But I need continuity. Vesuvius dies at Volis in one chapter and alive by the time we see him in the next book. Kyle is trapped in a net one chapter... then next time we meet him the net has disappeared. I'm kind of a stickler for these things. I will read the last book because... well, I've committed. However, my ratings have only dropped and I am feeling let down by the author and her editing team.
Blasting through this series by Morgan Rice. Very entertaining book. A little bit of Tolkien and her other books. Maybe it wouldn’t be so obvious to other people, but I’ve read a lot of Morgan Rice books in the last couple months, and one thing that seemed to really annoy me was a lot of repeated phrases. I think Morgan Rice would do well to have a better editor! The series must be read in order!
A Realm of Shadows (Kings and Sorcerers -- Book #5)
The fifth book is a six book series. Escalon is on fire, trolls, dragons, and the Pandesians. Duncan is free and is leading his man to the final battle. Kyan in son the quest for the rob of truth. Will Duncan win or will Ra win?
There were a few grammar errors and after having several years pass between starting this and finishing the previous version, it was hard to get up to speed as there is no recap. Which is a double edge sword to me. As I appreciate it not having it when I'm reading back to back, but miss it when I'm not. Going to read the final book next so I don't have this issue again.
I totally understand why a lot of people give this book 1 or 2 stars. The book ends every chapter with “ and now the character was sure he was going to die”, just to survive again in the next chapter.
My gf likes to read cheesy romance books. This fantasy book of Morgan is the same sort of book, just a different theme.
The story continues! I’m really enjoying all of the epic adventure all of the characters are going through. I will say I knocked a star off for a plot hole- in the end of the previous book one thing happened to Kyle- then in this book Kyle starts not in that same predicament- so that was pretty huge for me personally.
We are too far into this series for the writing to still be moving at the same pace. This is an author who obviously hates down time and peace for the reader. Every single one of her characters are always in utter peril. So I guess if that is the type of thing you like to read this would be a perfect book for you. I’m only pushing through the series so that I can say I finished it.
Continuity isn’t the best. The main character seems to know only family members and maybe a couple of other people. Others are also working to save the world because only there weapon can save it. One reason may be that the books are to short to make characters involved more and make story line flow better
Loved characters with their own plight s The destiny of Kyra takes you deeper into her powers. This story talks of the wars of commanders and their warriors. With dragons, trolls and humans doing battle.
This was my last favorite in the series so far. I'm still enjoying all the different story lines, but I'm getting burnt out with each chapter ending with the character "knowing" this is when they'll die.
