Okay. There are so many things wrong with this book that I gave up at 36% with a sigh of relief.
For starters. I don't know if the author has a real interest in endometriosis, but dammit, when I read a romance novel I do not want to be subjected to pages describing the heroine's period pains which are SO BAD she has to take ibuprofen and is seriously considering a hysterectomy to stop the symptoms.
I know someone with the condition. She was also advised to have a hysterectomy, after three failed laparoscopies. She more often than not collapsed with the pain and was taken to hospital and put on a morphine drip and eventually prescribed morphine. Ibuprofen is something taken for headaches, not the crippling pain of endometriosis.
Also, do I really want to read about her period happening? Shouldnt she have been aware it was going to start? She was on the pill for heaven's sake!!
This was supposed to be Religious and Inspirational, but to be honest, it was just one more nail in the religious coffin for me. Dak is judgemental and thoroughly obnoxious - snitching on Storm when he finds birth control pills in her fridge. (Apparently, ANY single woman who takes the pill is a whore and slattern and deserves anything that's coming to her, including miscarriage.)
WOW. What religion is THAT!!! Not Christian, surely?? I thought they taught forgiveness?? Nah, obviously not.
Then, when he is finally made aware of his error, Storm 'forgives' him by playing a pretty nasty 'practical joke' on him - throwing paint over his car, loosening the battery connections and putting a plastic snake under the bonnet of his car. THAT is just plain sick. And idiotic. And thoughtless, and pathetic to boot, not to mention spiteful.
I. Hate. Snakes." He threw it at Storm.

Christian 'fun' eh ;) Don't you just LOVE it.
The characters were thoroughly unlikeable and the whole set up with the endometriosis was almost ludicrous.

Storm’s ranch is the only place she’s ever felt at home. She was raised there by her Uncle Boots, and now runs the ranch with him. When some of her cattle are stolen, she doesn’t know how she will make the payment on her ranch. Then she needs surgery and her problems just multiply. Her neighbor, Dak, steps in to help. But independent, headstrong Storm has a very difficult time accepting anything she sees as a handout.
I liked the main characters, but also wanted to wring their necks sometimes. Dak was so quick to judge and very harsh at first. But when he realized his mistake, which was pretty major, he really tried to show he was sorry and help Storm in any way he could. He ended up being a really sweet guy. He was a good balance to Storm’s impulsive tendencies. Storm was a little too independent. She just couldn’t accept help of any kind. Sometimes it seemed a little childish and I just wanted to scream at her to be grateful. She was also a hard worker, loved to laugh and was great with Dak’s girls, who were just precious! Uncle Boots was wonderful! He was wise and caring. I loved him from the beginning!
I enjoyed the story. The romance was sweet and the mystery was well done. This is the second book in the series, but stands alone. I haven’t read the first book, but look forward to doing so. Meeting Jayne and Forrest in this book really made me want to read their story.

STORM was a story full of spunk, heartache, friendship, a little suspense, and some sweet romance. With well-written characters, heartwarming moments, and two characters who can find love in each other if they will but open their hearts, it was engaging from beginning to end.
I really loved Storm. She was such a great character. Hard-working, sweethearted, talented, and beautiful. She was also overly trusting in parts and vulnerable. Taggert and Dak were interesting friends/suitors. Dak was a little dramatic in the beginning and didn't feel quite realistic in his reactions at first, but he comes around and grows on you, as do his daughters. I loved how their friendship grows.
There was some serious heartache in the story and I really felt for Storm and Dak. There were also some nice twists. The suspense could have been developed a little more, or maybe I just wanted Storm to not be quite so behind in what was going on. It was still enjoyable. The ending was heartbreakingly sweet. The first half of the book got 4 stars, but the end got 5. I really it when there is both romance and suspense in a book.
When we first meet Storm, she is down on her luck. She is struggling to keep her ranch, and things are happening to make it harder and harder for her. We are also introduced to her two neighbors, Taggart and Dak. I was afraid there was going to be a love triangle, but thank goodness it becomes clear early on who was going to be the love interest. I loved Storm and love interest, but I really loved Boots. He is Storm's uncle but also ranch help and mentor. I thought his faith and love were inspiring.
The romance was very sweet. The suspense was good but I picked out the bad guy pretty early on and was right.

I thoroughly enjoyed this read. Love Uncle boots. That old man was awesome especially his spidey hearing and intuition.
Here we are introduced to the stubborn and independent minded Storm. Storm has issues of feeling like those who love her will leave her so she pushes people away. All except Uncle Boots. She and him are family like no other. so when he was about to sell his ranch, the only home she felt safe and loved at, she jumps in and takes over. Now she is on the brink of losing it and this is put even more to the forefront when cattle rustlers steal 11 of her cattle. On top of that Connor, her part time employee is killed and under suspicious circumstances.
These two mysteries are consistent throughout the story. Solving Connor's death is linked to the cattle rustler issue and is very well written. Although this is still at the forefront it isn't the only thing up there. The story also has the romance aspect. Dak, her neighbor, lost his wife a year ago and is trying to heal. He is staying strong for his two girls. This is who Storm tries to turn to with a business idea to keep her ranch going. At first Dak is prickly and says no. He doesn't want his girls lives interrupted by strangers on their land. As he sees his girls open up under Storm and what they could get out of the deal he changes his mind.
Dak is very morally centered. He is strong and caring. When he decides to give he gives 150%. When he decides to love he is all in. He does make a misconception about Storm and tries to make up for it. This leads to Storm pranking him and a relationship slowly building. I love the slow building relationships because we get to see the characters interact and get to know each other. In this book Dak helps Storm out after she has surgery and gets to know the true Storm as he does. Each night him and his girls come over and she teaches them art. Each morning he works her land and cattle. For Dak this helps to heal him. He wants more of this and when he suggests something to Storm she misconstrues and almost harms a wonderful relationship. We have two stubborn people who act before they think and this sometimes harms them. It's Uncle Boots that keeps these two from going off the handle too much. He makes it real and lets them know when they are being irrational and silly.
The slow buildup of the relationship allows us to see their world and what they think and feel. We see them in a very real way and get to watch their emotions play out. When tragedy strikes the heart of Storms ranch, Dak is there for her even if she fights him on it. She tries to push him away but he doesn't have it.
This is a love story with mystery and dangerous elements involved. We have the intrigue of figuring out the cattle rustlers and how they are getting away with stealing the cattle which is well woven into the story and keeps you wondering why,how and who. The mystery of Connor's death and how this fits into the cattle rustlers and if it does. this draws you into the story of intrigue as well. The story of Dak healing and finding love. Storm finding a way to let someone in and love them. Storm also seeing that sometimes what she thinks is a handout is really someone showing they care and want to help. This is the wonderfully written and entertaining story of Dak and Storm, the mystery of cattle rustlers and the death of Connor. The well written beautiful story of how Dak and Storm help each other heal in different ways and come together.

October 20, 2015In this book we meet Storm, a woman who is trying to run a ranch with her Uncle Boots. (I have no idea why they call him Boots, but every time I read it, it reminded me a bit of the sidekick named Boots on the children's show Dora. But the character of Uncle Boots was really well-written in the book. I loved how warm he was and sweet.)
Unfortunately for Uncle Boots and Storm, some of their cattle have been stolen and their part-time ranch hand has disappeared under suspicious circumstances. Not to mention, the ranch payment is due, but without those cattle to sell, they're up a creek. I have to say the author really shines in the setting department. I enjoyed how realistic the ranch and surrounding area was, and it was easy to lose myself in the descriptions and how real Storm's concerns were as she worked to save the only place that ever felt like home to her.
The story goes on to introduce us to our hero, Dak. (I'm sorry, but I didn't like his name at all. It's never explained why he would have such an odd name and every time I read it, it made me think of that gooey substance Gak that my kids have.) Anyway, Dak is a fairly judgmental jerk in the beginning and makes some assumptions about Storm, which would be bad enough, but he tries to tell their pastor she doesn't deserve to teach Sunday School either. I had such a hard time getting over the fact that he jumped to such a huge conclusion, didn't ask Storm about it, and then decided to try to ruin her teaching job behind her back. Storm forgives him pretty easily, but I hated how underhanded and sneaky that felt and it took me quite a while to warm up to him as a hero after that. They do have some good moments as a couple, (the cave scenes come to mind which were really sweet!) and he does do some heroic things that justify him being the hero later on, but it's a journey, that's for sure. He does have a point in his favor, though, because Uncle Boots likes him.
But the best part of the whole book was the suspense as Storm tries to unravel who killed her part-time ranch hand, Connor. There are great clues and some twists and turns that were really good. While I was able to figure out who the bad guy was pretty quickly, I thought the author had some very tense scenes as our heroine gets herself in over her head trying to solve the mystery. I really enjoyed that aspect of the book and thought it was well-written.
So, for me, Storm had a great setting, a strong heroine, and a twisty turny mystery which made this book a fun afternoon read.

This was an easy, enjoyable, quick read. Although it's the second in a series and I haven't read the first one, it seems to be more of a companion novel so it's not necessary to read the first to understand what's going on, although I'm sure it makes it more enjoyable.
The characters were interesting. Not my favorite by any means but they weren't annoying characters to read about. The main character, Storm, is just too hardheaded for me to like and Dak's way of jumping to conclusions and running with them put me off of him from the beginning. They got better as the story ran its course but I wouldn't want to read any more about them.
The plot ran okay. The beginning was slow and a bit awkward with what Storm goes through and Dak's aforementioned jumping to conclusions. I wasn't sure what the main conflict in the story was going to be since it jumped around a bit. The action at the end was pretty interesting; however I feel that the more sinister elements in the book were very obvious and not difficult to figure out at all. I liked the ending, especially because of the way the characters grow.
Likes: Easy, quick read. Perfect for people who like a contemporary western.
Dislikes: Some grammar and spelling errors. The sinister elements were easy to figure out. I didn't like the characters much personally.
Overall:
Recommend? Yes if you're looking for a contemporary western. Otherwise you could skip this.

Independent, stubborn and hardworking are the words that come to mind when you start describing Storm. She’s going to need all those characteristics if she’s going to keep her ranch and not lose it to the bank. Already behind on last year’s payments, Storm is going to have to beg the bank for an extension after she’s fallen victim to the cattle rustling that has been affecting all the ranchers around her. When things couldn’t seem to get any worse, she’s given the news that her ranch hand has been died in a car accident, but new evidence shows that it may not have not been an accident at all. Without a choice but to bite back pride, she must turn to her neighbor Dak-who also suffers from the same characteristics that Storm does. Dak must get past his judgmental tendencies and reach out to the woman who might just find him happiness again.
The author did a great job writing and describing the country side and the beautiful art that Storm created. However, I was a little hung up on how stubborn Storm was and how judgmental Dak was towards Storm. It really made me mad how far wrong Dak was and how he thought it was necessary to tattle tale. Storm was so stubborn that she really kept getting the wrong ideas and turning everything against those trying to help her. The two were so aggravating that I just want to yell at them to get over it and move on. That being my only dislike of the book, it was an easy read and was entertaining.

She also wondered if there was a connection to the stolen cattle and her ranch hand's death. To add to her problems the ranch payment is due and Storm will not have enough money without the missing cattle to sell. This is the only home she has ever known and can't loose it no matter what it takes to keep it. When Dak comes into the story he is a real jerk. When he sees Storm is ill he jumps to conclusions about her that are way off base. He even goes to the pastor to tell him she shouldn't be teaching Sunday School.

Ummm, there were lots of yummy parts in this book. Mostly is relation to Dak, although he had a rocky start. He did own up to his mistake though and worked really hard to prove he was sorry. I liked the way Dak was patient with Storm. Sometimes it reminded me of how a parent tries to teach and reason with a child, which doesn't say too much for Storm, I guess.
Storm is a fiercely independent woman. She is tough on the outside but is insecure and scared on the inside. I thought she acted very childish a lot of the time- especially in relation to Dak and other people trying to be friendly and help but even I can't deny the love and loyalty she had for her Uncle Boots or how hard she worked.
There were parts in this book that literally had my emotions threatening to spill over. My heart may have broken just a little bit. While I hate to get emotional, I love when a book can evoke such real emotions in me. This one did.
I enjoyed the bit of suspense thrown in to the story line. It was a good book and I really enjoyed reading it. I haven't read the first book in this series, but I wasn't lost or missing anything by having not read it. I am going to go back and read it though and I'm looking forward to the next book in this series by Kate Palmer.

Storm is living the life that she wants. She is young and owns her own ranch. She has a hard time making the loan payments, but is positive when she takes the cattle to market, she will be able to may her payments. That's when the unthinkable happens.... someone steals eleven of her herd. The same day she learns that one of her employees has died in a car accident.
She receives help from unexpected people. The first is Dak, the widower neighbor. He was the perfect character to help her through her many rocky trials. I can't say he was perfect, but he owned up to his mistakes and did everything to make them right. He took Storm where she was and helped lift her when she needed it.
Storm is not the only victim of the cattle rustler. There is a bit of mystery and suspense as she tries to figure out who did it.
This is a clean romance with mystery. I really enjoyed it and look forward to reading more of Kate Palmer's books.

Storm by Kate Palmer was a rollercoaster ride of a novel. After a slow start, it was an enjoyable read with many bumps in the road. Warning: Storm (which is an odd and unexplained name) is extremely prideful. At time I wanted to smack her. I also struggled with the romantic angle of the story. Although we were lead to believe they enjoyed each other’s company, any romantic attachment was overwhelmed by Storm’s pride and stubbornness and Dak’s (another odd name) constant putting his foot in his mouth. I did however, enjoy the mystery and action of the story and Kate did a great job of portraying ranch life and struggles.

I didn't realize that this book was part of a series, it can be read as a stand alone.
There are many things that this book has: Ranch life, suspense, cattle rustling, pride issues, close family relationships, struggles to make ends meet, creativity to make ends meet.
I enjoyed the story and felt like it flowed well. I felt like the beginning was a little slow, but once I got past the first three chapters, I was able to get into the story and it read pretty quickly.
I love that the book is clean, so I didn't have to worry about the content.

I'm enjoying it so far! wish I had all the time in the world to read it. - Finished, it was an fun glimpse into the life of a cowgirl. I like the tie into the first book in the series, but was still a read alone book. totally suggest this book.

Independent, stubborn and hardworking are the words that come to mind when you start describing Storm. She’s going to need all those characteristics if she’s going to keep her ranch and not lose it to the bank. Already behind on last year’s payments, Storm is going to have to beg the bank for an extension after she’s fallen victim to the cattle rustling that has been affecting all the ranchers around her. When things couldn’t seem to get any worse, she’s given the news that her ranch hand has been died in a car accident, but new evidence shows that it may not have not been an accident at all. Without a choice but to bite back pride, she must turn to her neighbor Dak-who also suffers from the same characteristics that Storm does. Dak must get past his judgmental tendencies and reach out to the woman who might just find him happiness again.
The author did a great job writing and describing the country side and the beautiful art that Storm created. However, I was a little hung up on how stubborn Storm was and how judgmental Dak was towards Storm. It really made me mad how far wrong Dak was and how he thought it was necessary to tattle tale. Storm was so stubborn that she really kept getting the wrong ideas and turning everything against those trying to help her. The two were so aggravating that I just want to yell at them to get over it and move on. That being my only dislike of the book, it was an easy read and was entertaining.

But wait Taggert is also interested in Storm and then we have the death of a cow-hand in a somewhat mysterious car accident. Strong and caring father of two Dak and his daughters complete Storm providing each with what the other is lacking. This full length novel is in parts suspenseful, humorous poignant,and deeply sad but culminates in a happy ending.

great book
I really enjoyed reading this book. Being raised on a farm, I can relate a lot to this story. The fire, such a tragedy, could have devastated her life forever but she didn’t let it. Then the mystery of the cattle rustling kept you going. You didn’t want to put the book down till you found out what happened next. Finally letting her neighbors help and falling in love with one made a great story. A wonderful read.

Clean love story
Dak lost his wife a year before from cancer, Storm was left by her father at her uncle's after her mother's death when she was a kid. Storm is independent, stubborn and can't cook to save her life but she can run the ranch with the best of them. Dak comes at a time when Storm really needs more help than she ever thought she would ever need.

This book came to my urge to read it just at the right time. It is full of feelings and heart. A little place full of people who come together just in the right moment. It might just take your breath away a few times reading. Plenty of suspense and action too are included.

Nice read
Good clean fun. The main character Storm at times seems a little too independent for her own good, almost enough to be irritating. But Adam is just amazing and it has enough suspense to keep things moving along. Great series. Really enjoy the books.

I really liked the hero and heroine of this sweet contemporary Western romance--and the hero's two young daughters. The relationship developed naturally through their shared experiences and both grew in the process.

Suspenseful and sweet

My favorite of the series! I loved the characters and that it had a mystery intertwined. I'd read this one again. Clean. Appreciate that. Fun, quick read for a quiet break from life.
