From Meg Jackson, best selling author of REIGN and CULVER...
The reality was hitting me in waves; no wonder she hated me. She thought I’d leaked our sex tape. But I didn’t. So who did?
Endo is handsome, charming, and inconspicuous. That makes him the perfect choice for the Black Smoke MC’s latest job, escorting a beautiful woman out of a dangerous situation. He didn't know that it was the woman who broke his heart years ago.
Naomi broke up with him because she was scared. What they had was too intense, so she left him. A year later, he betrayed her and ruined her life. Some things are too horrible to ever forgive.
I haven't picked this up in about two weeks, so I'm getting it off my shelves as a DNF. It was a KU borrow, so luckily, no money was spent. From what I remember, Endo and Naomi were hot and heavy a while back, made a sex tape, then Naomi got scared by their intensity (or whatever dumb thing she came up with -- but I'm pretty sure that was it) and ran off, and about a year later, the sex tape they made was released and went viral. I dunno, maybe stuff like that happens to non-celebrities, but I found it hard to swallow (heh... giggity) that an amateur porno made by two non-famous people was that ridiculously popular. Still, weirder things have happened (not going to make the obvious Kardashian/Hilton/reality-star-of-the-moment joke here, but we're all thinking it).
Either way, fast-forward to present and Naomi hates Endo for releasing the sex tape and Endo has no idea the sex tape was released and hates Naomi for leaving him and thus destroying all of his good feelings about the female gender and turning him into a player. Wah wah. They're thrown together because her daddy is mixed up in shady dealings and Endo is hired to bodyguard. The reunion was a bit forced and I think I simply put it down a couple of chapters later when it went off on an entire chapter about the bad guy who was, quite frankly, a stock bad guy I've seen ten million other times.
Look, the book wasn't badly written, it featured some decent characters, and a plot I ordinarily could have really gotten into but in the end it just did nothing for me. Naomi was a bit whiny for my taste, but I might have gotten over it if I'd kept reading. Totally a case of it's not you, it's me. (Or maybe it's you and it just feels like me at the moment because nothing is holding my interest lately.)
I'm sorry, I really struggled to get through this one. I usually try to find something redeemable about books I review, but honestly I can't think of even one thing. I hated both of the main characters as well as the supporting characters. The dialogue was super awkward and the entire idea that these guys could be considered bad a@*es is a joke. I don't mind reading about the softer side of the MC life, but this was a stretch. When it was mentioned that Endo was some type of cook for his mc all I could think of was that annoyingly lovable character from SOA... you know the one with no hands. Not what I want to be picturing as the main love interest in a romance. Lastly, the end of the book came at about 75% the rest was a sample of the first book in the series...... I'll be skipping that, by the way.
