This book is a record of the Fourth Iowa Volunteer Cavalry Regiment as told by one of their own, William Forse Scott. This book contains a rich history of the campaigns in which the Fourth Iowa took part. It also describes the evolution of the use of cavalry by Federal commanders, from mainly scouting and foraging, to protecting infantry’s flanks, and then to sending large bodies of cavalry on raids deep into enemy territory. But Scott also provides a detailed insight into the life of a cavalryman and his horse.
