When a heiress is kidnapped, P.I. (and witch par excellence), Jill Gooder, is ordered not to get involved. Whoops! And why is her one-eyed cat, Winky, acting so 'normal'?
I just wished there was more coming our way on TDO. I know it's the overarching plot of the series and all, so taking one's time to set it is understandable but I would expect more after 5 volumes. Regardless, great plot and some more laughs along the way.
Quick Info Standalone/Cliffhanger?: Standalone Part of a Series?: Yes ---------------------------------- Meeting the Characters Jill Gooder Jack Maxwell Mrs V Donald Hook ---------------------------------- What happens? Kathy guilt trips Jill into taking the kids on a day trip for her. This isn't a normal trip with the kids using every opportunity to make her life harder. What I found funny is she lets them win! Jill falls out with Jack who has some bitter memories of a PI helping out on a kidnapping case, and uses these memories to get mad at Jill for the victim's boyfriend coming to her for help and in typical fashion doesn't listen to her refusing the case. As she is a very high temper person she retaliates by taking the case just to spite Jack but her interest it peaked when it turns not to be a simple kidnapping case. Mrs V also has a male visitor called Donald Hook come into the picture. Which Jill has a feeling isn't good and investigates him on the side. Final thoughts This one wasn't as good as previous. I like the whole witch stuff but after 5 books why does she not seem to be improving properly. Its more like the magical unicorn where she does amazing things without trying or knowing. There isn't any effort there. The whole Jack thing was annoying too, he is so stuffy and rude just because of a PI. I mean if he was any good at his job how didn't they know to talk to the victim's friends? I don't get that? Would I read again?: Maybe Would I read this author again?: Yes
I LOVE Jill Gooder, private investigator and witch! These books need to be read in order, because each one builds on the one(s) before, and if you try to pick them up in the middle, you won't know what's going on.

At first I thought that there were massive holes in the plot, then when up to the last chapter, I realised I was reading book 5 not book 1. It just sums up my days recently. Stupidity returning to book one now. Hopefully it will make more sense.
Ok so I have reread this book after finishing books 1, 2, 3 & 4 and I have to say, it all makes perfect sense now. So, don’t start a series on book 5!! Haha
Still a good series and as I’ve said before, a great binging series.
This is a fun, easy to read series that has several storylines going. Jill Gooder is a witch in training who is also a PI so while she is learning the Witch ropes so to speak she is also trying to build her PI business and solve cases for her clients. I especially enjoy Jill's Grandma. Will Grandma get caught using magic to make her knitting business prosper? I'll have to keep reading to find out.
In the 5th book of the series, Jill is asked to help on a missing person's case. However, that puts her and the detective at odds again, and she isn't sure how to deal with it. Not only that but she has a few dramas going on in her personal life as well.
This was another good one, but I really wish Jill would have stood up to the detective more, that was a bit annoying. Other than that I'm interested in more in this series.
And it's still interesting. Maybe the last couple of books in this series were not so intensive, but the plot is still simple and funny, so it's very good if you want to relax with a book and not to put a weight on your head and brain. A good way to spend your spare time. Let's keep going, the trip is not over yet!
Another fun and easy read. I do enjoy Jill and her adventures. I wish the author would allow the twins to grow up a bit. I would love to read about Winky and Barry meeting. Also, more Maxwell, he's one of the better characters.
Series like these often face the problem that the running gags start getting old at some point or another. This happened to me with the Kitty Katt series by Gini Koch. I have had the 9th book in the series for years and I still haven't read it. The Witch PI series never was a must read for me the way that Kitty Katt was. From the start I found it diverting but nothing more as the cases are mostly boring, not all gags are to my liking (the twins and Kathy really aren't my favorite) and the romance is very inconsistent.
This book featured a day trip with the kids that Kathy conned her sister into. Annoying. Jill has a fallout with Det. Maxwell because he thinks that she accepted a kidnapping case and he had some bad experiences with a PI's involvement in the past. Which incidentally is why she didn't accept the case. Of course, she gets angry, which in this case is perfectly understandable and in a huff gets involved after all. Jack and she don't have much of a relationship to be perfectly honest, as she also lusts after Drake, her new account (something Stone) and the gardener (Jethro). Also not one of my favorite aspects of these books.
Winky's upgrade to smartphones and the following introduction of feline facebook are cute. And grandma probably still is one of my favorite characters. I simply love how she appears out of nowhere and wreaks havoc.
The kidnapping case was a little cliched for my taste. While I think that Jack is Jill's true love interest in the series, he isn't really an interesting one. He is a total failure as a detective. Apparently he never even questioned the victim's friends or he could have solved the case on his own. This is the fifth book in the series and the guy never even come close to solving a case. Added to that are his extreme mood swings. First, he is extremely angry at Jill because he thought she took on the case. Then she solves it showing him (and the entire department) up once again and his reaction is to ask her on a date as if nothing happened. That is one weird guy.
While Jill is a nice enough person if a little neurotic I don't understand where the attraction between those two is supposed to come from. I kept reading this series because it is free on Kindle Unlimited. But there are currently 27 books. And I'm uncertain whether I can take 22 more as the books are essentially all the same, the gags are already getting old and the cases are seldom interesting.
This is another good one! This one remedies some of the problems I had with the last one (too many cases going on and too many characters). It reintroduced everyone that was important in a brief statement and there was just one case- the kidnapping of Amanda Banks. She disappeared and her boyfriend hired Jill to investigate. At first she said no because she knew jack maxwell would not be happy because the other case he had been on where the PI interrupted the case and ended up getting the girl killed. But then Jack made her mad so she took the case. In the end, she figures out that Amanda’s boss had found out her family had money so he got her to go along with a kidnapping by making her think her boyfriend Steve was cheating on her. So she went with him, they framed Steve, but in the end jill figures it all out! Also going on, the guy who the twins liked in school opens a bakery across the street and aunt Lucy makes custom birthday cakes for him! The twins don’t know she is doing it, but I’m sure it’ll come out soon. Jill keeps doing well with her witchcraft and is still trying to find out what the connection between Alicia and the dark one is. There’s hardly any mention of Drake in this book, but she does make amends and apologize for not listening to his side. In the meantime, she is starting to go on dates with Jack. The cliffhanger at the end is that her new hot accountant is moving in across the hall 😍

Already moved from this book onto #6 in the series! The Witch is When series thus far has been a somewhat light-hearted comical book series following Jill Gooder, a private investigator whom recently found out she is a witch!
These books have werewolves, vampires, mostly witches and wizards, murder/kidnap mysteries to solve, all with a little sprinkle of quirk and comedy. If you're interested in light-easy going reading then this might be the book series for you.
And entertaining which he cozy mystery. Young female private investigator finds out she is actually a witch. Her adopted family that she grew up with knows nothing about that world. She discovers she has a whole Nother family living in a supernatural town. And the adventures begin. She straddles both worlds and solves mysteries as a PI in the normal world. Well I’ll sell solving crimes in the supernatural world. She also has some dark wizard or source after her that she must also keep an eye out for and still put up with her adopted sister who is a nut and her which grandma who is an even bigger nut and try and keep the two worlds separate. He very entertaining cast of characters and entertaining story lines. She also has one crazy one eyed cat talks to her and lives in her office in the real world. A quirky and entertaining series check it out
Adopted as a child, Jill learns as an adult that her birth family is a family of powerful witches. She balances life in both human and supernatural worlds visiting between the two towns complete with a pet and somewhat boyfriend potential in both places. Jill is also a PI solving cases between sorting out issues in her personal/ family life. In this one, a young woman from a wealthy family is kidnapped triggering conflict between Jack and Jill. Winky gets online with a new smartphone and the twins face deal with a competitor moving in next door.
There is much more that happened and that is my continued complaint of the series. There are so many shallow storylines and I wish there were fewer with more thought into the actual resolving. Also while I enjoy good snark, the humor is a bit too mean spirited and petty for my taste. I always say that I'm going to stop reading the series but I do enjoy some parts and end up trying again.
There's more on the destruction of the Beanie Babies and problems with her sister. (In my opinion Jill should just move to Cambridge permanently and visit her sister once in a while.)
The greedy lawyers still want her out of the building and even erect a huge sign on the building blocking out her smaller sign. She uses her witch abilities in a very creative and very funny way to handle this.
There's been a kidnapping, more trouble with Detective Maxwell an enemy that is working for TDO (The Dark One.)
There's more magical tests for her to take, there's something she needs to do about Drake and her grandmother is still nasty and doing some things that violate the rules witches are supposed to follow.
Plus, finally, there's the ever-present (and I wish he would go away. Far away. Perhaps Mars?) Winky who, considering how he behaves, I being to wonder about whether is TDO.
I kept waiting for these books to get better, but... I kind of like the cat (take him home...please!) and her knitting unpaid receptionist, and the mysteries aren’t too bad. What I really can’t stand is the treatment Jill gets from her one and only sister, not to mention her grandmother. Granted, her grandma is new to her and known as an unfriendly character...what is weird is her blatant disregard for Jill’s finances...she is constantly trapping her in to spending money we are finding out she doesn’t have. And, if I had a sister like that I’d disown her and move away. It’s not funny any more, just sickening. I stuck with her to book five hoping for her to have a relationship with the detective, but, no dice. 39 books in this series?? No thanks. The humor just isn’t worth it.
Jill Gooder is at it again. In this fifth installment of the Witch P.I. mystery series, Jill is retained to find an adult kidnapping victim. Her relationship with Detective Maxwell is at a standstill and he doesn't want her involved in his case. While she is sleuthing, Jill is involved in various escapades with Amber and Pearl. Grandma continues to annoy and bother the girls and Lucy, but she is very happy with Jill's education into various spells. It looks like Jill will be a witch after grandma's own heart! This is such a fun series! It's very light reading, and perfect for the beach!
She's at it again! Jill Gooder witch PI has yet another case. I've been onto this series for the past five books like moths at a flame but i cant seem to stop myself. This book finally showed how much I've missed being a child, going on just random adventures in the backyard with my brother trying to find the craziest things. One summer we even found a piece of broken concrete that we spent the whole summer just digging up , its still displayed on my porch now. But what I wanted to say was that this book specifically was very nostalgic for me and hit my heart bullseye, where it will remain there forever. This book gets a 5/5 from me.
I wish-wash on this series. On one hand, it's a fun series that has interesting plots. But on the other hand, the characterization, at times, is frustrating to the point of annoyance. The main character waffles in the wind about men like a milkweed being dispersed by a toddler. At this point, I still have no idea who she's really into. That's 5 books and still no clue. The grandmother is something else. I know she's family -- but there is also a point where you say enough. I'm not sure where that is, but it's a fine line for me.
I love Jill, Winky is my absolute favorite, Grandma is a character, and Mrs V’s cameos are always appreciated. All of the side characters are so vividly drawn that I can imagine them fully and their interactions are, by and large, quite hilarious.
The only downside is the formatting — no page numbers, no indentations between paragraphs (where as a writer, I’d normally hit tab), sometimes other editing errors like misplaced commas or missing quotation marks. But I enjoy the story and characters enough that I can overlook that… for the most part. Ha!
I love the magic part of this serie, how Jilly is learning new spells and using them around, and seriously Grandma! :D ... even though this one has a small part of the crime, nevermind. I love Candelfield and every single moment Jill spent there in this book :) cannot wait for the next one, as I see it is the christmas story, perfect timing, I will be ready just to read the next one in December :)
At book 5, I'm finding Jill's inability to say no, admit what she's feeling and generally act like an adult - to be taxing. The twins are relentlessly annoying, Grandma is mean, Winky's mean. It's an epidemic shallow characters who are all awful to each other. When the nicest character is the potential killer, you have a problem. I hope the rudeness of Kathy & her kids tones down. Otherwise it's a fun, light mystery.
So far I really like this series. Easy quick read, likable characters and funny. What I like about the books is that they are what I call clean cut. No cursing, no sex, nothing horrible. Each book so far have had unique storylines. Often writers get stuck in the same pattern book after book. This series maybe for the younger reader but I'm enjoying it as an old reader.
Book five in the series, and it is still as bonkers as ever, but now I am invested in the characters and the overarching theme of the story. Still don't like the sister and the detective, but the nutty mean grandma is not as bad as you would think. What is great is the way the story is building and with the silly humour is a great fun story. The Christmas special is next, so I'm assuming there will be a break from the big themes, we will see.
I enjoyed this book very much and I especially liked that Jill occasionally used her powers for revenge—not a lot or dangerously but because it was necessary. And besides she must keep practicing her spells, she wouldn’t want to upset Grandma. Her sister is as annoying as usual and her children are still brats. And Jack Maxwell needs to be reigned in to not take out his anger on where it belongs not blaming Jill when he can’t solve a case. Overall another great book in the PI Witch Mystery episodes.
I read another book in the series because I'm curious what happens in Jill Gooder's love life and if she'll ever confront the big bad. But, this book left me hanging again. Many of the short story plots within the book seemed to be incomplete - were rushed or fell flat. I want to like these books because I like having a light quick read on my monthly list, but I think I'm going to have to let this series go.
