Κάποιο βράδυ, ο νεαρός Λούκα γίνεται μάρτυρας μιας τραγικής σκηνής, όταν τέσσερις νεαροί βάζουν φωτιά σε ένα μετανάστη. Ο Λούκα παρακολουθεί σοκαρισμένος δίχως να αντιδράσει. Την επόμενη μέρα, νιώθοντας ενοχές, καταφέρνει να εντοπίσει τον άντρα στο νοσοκομείο όπου νοσηλεύεται. Πρόκειται για τον Ράτζιβα από τη Σρι Λάνκα, ένα λαθρομετανάστη που ζει πουλώντας τριαντάφυλλα. Η απόφασή του να βοηθήσει τον Ράτζιβα θα τον οδηγήσει στους δρόμους της πόλης, εκεί όπου θα πάρει τη θέση του πλανόδιου πωλητή και θα βιώσει το φόβο και τα εχθρικά βλέμματα για καθετί ξένο και διαφορετικό. Η περιπέτειά του θα του χαρίσει μια ανεκτίμητη φιλία που θα τον "μεταμορφώσει", κάνοντάς τον να δει τον κόσμο με τα μάτια του άλλου...

Paola Capriolo è nata a Milano nel 1962. Ha esordito come narratrice nel 1988 con la raccolta di racconti La grande Eulalia (Premio Berto) alla quale sono seguiti, tra gli altri, Il nocchiero (Premio Rapallo Carige e Selezione Campiello), Il doppio regno (Premio Grinzane Cavour), Vissi d’amore, Una luce nerissima, Il pianista muto, Mi ricordo (finalista al Premio Viareggio), Avventure di un gatto viaggiatore, Marie e il signor Mahler. Le sue opere hanno vinto importanti premi letterari e sono tradotte in molti paesi. È anche autrice di libri per ragazzi (tra cui Il primo bambino del mondo, Bompiani, 2021) e traduce classici della letteratura tedesca, da Goethe a Kafka, da Kleist a Thomas Mann.

Paola Capriolo fait des études de philosophie à l'université de Milan dont elle est diplômée en 1996. Elle devient journaliste dans les pages « Culture » du Corriere della Sera et réalise également des traductions en italien de classiques de la littérature germanique (dont La Mort à Venise de Thomas Mann, Les Souffrances du jeune Werther de Goethe ou Michael Kohlhaas d'Heinrich von Kleist).

Normally, I have to say, I cannot stand narratives where a character pretends to be part of a marginalised group and only then realises how hard they have it. It happens in movies, in TV shows, it's something people do in real life and, really, could I say it any better than Pulp did in Common People? Here, let me quote the verse I'm talking about: "Rent a flat above a shop, // Cut your hair and get a job. // Smoke some fags and play some pool, // Pretend you never went to school. // But still you'll never get it right, // 'Cause when you're laid in bed at night, // Watching roaches climb the wall, // If you called your Dad he could stop it all."

Still, I think this book gains a lot from the very fact that the main character is still really just a kid. I think he's 17 but he's not really written as teenagers in YA tend to be, he's written as an actual, real life teenager, a kid still learning about life and growing into a good, compassionate adult.

Also, the end always makes me tear up a little.

It's a really quick and easy read even though it deals with some heavier topics, I would definitely recommend it for a 14/15yo.

onestamente non so che parere io abbia a riguardo di questo libro, sicuramente è molto istruttivo, la storia è ben costruita e dietro di esso ci sono dei significati ancora a molti sconosciuti: l'uguaglianza, la compassione e la comprensione.
ma c'è una cosa che mi da alquanto "fastidio": come Luca cerchi quasi di raccontare la storia di Rajiva senza averla vissuta veramente, anche se il mio probabilmente è solo un punto di vista

Libro interessante, per far capire alle persone (che di idioti ci sono anche gli adulti. Anzi è per colpa loro se i ragazzini lo sono...) com'è la vita di molte persone straniere che vengono qui. Magari al loro paese professori o Geometra che qui sono destinati a fare lavori sottopagati o mendicare... Sono felice per la fine. Però una nota a me molto odiosa. Luca non doveva essere così pesante, si poteva anche evitare di caricarlo così tanto. Va bene l'ignoranza, anche io purtroppo da adolescente ho creduto a delle fesserie, e sono orgogliosa di aver cambiato idea e di essere una persona diversa su molti argomenti tipo l'Islam. Ma che lui sia: razzista, che bisogna che spesso ci ricorda che è un borghesuccio firmato, che è maschilista, che manda messaggini scemi a Susi e tutto il bagaglio tossico che si porta dietro anche no. Si poteva evitare, come se ogni adolescente fosse come lui. Trovo sia offensivo.

Con la società italiana in cui siamo, credo che questo libro sia utile per la sensibilizzazione dei ragazzi nei confronti della diversità, intesa come "qualcosa e qualcuno che non siamo noi". Troppo spesso le persone giudicano senza mettersi nei panni degli altri, senza sapere quale storia c'è dietro ad un volto. E se all'improvviso fossimo noi quelli che la gente vuole evitare, quelli che se vogliono mangiare devono uscire dal locale, quelli che devono dormire al freddo perché non hanno un posto dove andare?
