Charlee Jacob has been a digger for dinosaur bones, a seller of designer rags, and a cook - to mention only a few things. With more than 950 publishing credits, Charlee has been writing dark poetry and prose for more than 25 years. Some of her recent publishing events include the novel STILL (Necro), the poetry collection HERESY (Necro), and the novel DARK MOODS. She is a three-time Bram Stoker Award winner, two of those awards for her novel DREAD IN THE BEAST and the poetry collection SINEATER; the third award for collaborative poetry collection, VECTORS, with Marge Simon. Permanently disabled, she has begun to paint as one of her forms of phsycial therapy. She lives in Irving, Texas with her husband Jim and a plethora of felines.

Abbandono a circa metà libro. Purtroppo è troppo hardcore per i miei gusti e la maggior parte dei racconti che ho letto si sintetizza così:

Mi sono approcciato alla lettura di questa raccolta con un piacevole senso di tensione dovuto al livello estremo degli argomenti che sapevo avrei dovuto affrontare; eppure la prosa di Charlee Jacob è di una potenza poetica incredibile e ti accompagna con eleganza tra i sentieri più neri della narrativa. Una lettura non per tutti, ma che in molti dovrebbero affrontare.

The title story (novella?) in this book was insanely badass, and some of the other stories were pretty good, but overall this book just didn't go anywhere. The writing is absolutely amazing, and the IMAGINATION of this writer, it's like Clive Barker at his most decadent and ferocious times 100! It's for sure the goriest, most intense book I've ever read as far as pain and misery go, but after awhile it's the same thing again and again. Rape, killing, rape, torture, rape, torture, killing, etc etc etc. She describes these things in a super crazy way, but again, most of the stories don't go anywhere.

The biggest exception is the title story, which is just crazy, a pseudo-philosophical broken narrative mainly about this dude's entrance into some sort of black oblivion in his search for the ultimate experience. Lots of Nietzsche and Clive Barker in this story in particular.

Anyway, I don't know if I'll read anything else by this writer, but if this poetic ultraviolence is your thing, you'll love this writer.

unlike the novel of the same name, this book is the real deal. Watch how a one-woman-army of gory and subversive literature leaves no moral stone unturned.

Charlee has suffered with personal illness all her life and (they say write what you know) there's a lot of pain and suffering protrayed in this 5***** book.

Highlights?

Well, the majority of the stories are top shelf material, real star quality hardcore horror with titles like Grafts of Delicate Lace and Mortal Wound and The Woman in Red and Scalpel Mouth and the amazing Fire... gah, you'd be an idiot not to totally love this outrageous nightmare ride through Charlee's subconscious world of hurt.

Ne “Il Giorno della Bestia” la bravissima e purtroppo scomparsa Charlee Jacob fa quello che farebbe ogni bravo scrittore dell’orrore e ci mette davanti a uno specchio. Ma il suo specchio non riflette la paura della morte, né le nostre debolezze nascoste, né la nostra fragilità inconfessabile, né le nostre crudeltà opportuniste e patetiche; riflette invece una parte di noi che di cui non ammetteremmo mai l'esistenza, un regno di uncini, catene, tortura e abuso dove l’essere umano diventa oggetto e giocattolo delle pulsioni più infantili e della crudeltà più capricciosa.

Ma i suoi racconti, che parlino di un’iniziazione sessuale al cannibalismo, del romanzo di formazione di uno psicopatico puro, di uno stupro rituale di massa che esorcizza il trauma di un’apocalisse nucleare, non sono mai una piatta parata di atrocità. C’è un’umanità residua, un urlo di dolore nascosto nel deserto morale dei suoi personaggi, un elemento di contrasto che allontana i suoi orrori dal semplice compiacimento morboso, dalla patetica esperienza vicaria e li trasforma in un simbolo, in immagini che echeggiano nel profondo, e rende la lettura un momento di raccoglimento, intimo come una preghiera, per riflettere su cosa siamo e su cosa potremmo diventare. Se vittime o carnefici, esseri umani o mostri, per chiederci se qualcosa potrà mai salvarci dalla solitudine dell’essere noi stessi.

Curiosamente, come lettore non mi sono mai sentito sotto tortura, come con altri narratori contemporanei meno estremi. Mentre avanzavo a piccole dosi attraverso il libro avevo l’impressione di ascoltare una voce di rara onestà che non nasconde le sue carte, che non vuole manipolarmi giocando sulle mie aspettative, che non vuole cullarmi in un’illusione di tranquillità per poi scioccarmi con brutalità inaspettate; una voce amica che deve dirmi qualcosa di spiacevole, ma che devo ascoltare fino in fondo.

Non sono un esperto di extreme horror e neanche di splatterpunk. Lo splatter al cinema lo trovo generalmente ridicolo e il torture porn la cosa più stupida e noiosa mai portata sullo schermo. Le budella e gli schizzi di sangue "di per sè", gratuitamente, non mi incuriosiscono nè mi appassionano e spesso mi sembra vengano usati solo per shockare e per fare "bu" come i bambini, ovvero per suscitare reazioni di puntiforme eccitazione, superficiali e quindi sterili. Ma qui ci troviamo di fronte a qualcosa di altro. Qualcosa di magnifico - Certo, ci vuole stomaco. Certo, non è per tutti. Certo, va preso a piccole dosi - ma questi racconti, nella loro martellante ossessione per le profondità umorose, sanguinose, palpitanti e maleodoranti del corpo umano, nel loro tripudio di viscere, sangue, muco, pus, feci, urina, grasso, ossa, tendini, cartilagini, questi racconti qui lasciano trasparire una poetica ben precisa, una visione coerente - distorta e allucinata quanto si vuole ma coerente, lucida, "autoriale" - un angolo prospettico inusuale, e interessante, sulla realtà e sul nostro veloce passaggio sul pianeta terra. Grazie a una ben salda sapienza narrativa e a una scrittura ritmata, elegante e non priva di notevoli slanci poetici, questi racconti riescono a esprimere l'esperienza del momento in cui la pelle viene strappata via e resta ciò che c'è sotto: profondo umorale sanguinoso palpitante maleodorante, appunto. Un vero e proprio viaggio sotto la pelle che, insistendo e reiterando con estro e immaginazione, produce bizzarri effetti percettivi: schifo e disgusto, accettabile e inaccettabile, vengono infatti scardinati, ricalibrati, riplasmati. E la pelle - la pelle che contiene e occulta tutto ciò che letteralmente "abbiamo dentro", tutto ciò che alla maggior parte delle persone farebbe e fa schifo, tutto ciò che ogni giorno viene dimenticato perché con esso ogni giorno non se ne ha a che fare, salvo le eccezioni del personale sanitario e cimiteriale - la pelle si manifesta in tutta la sua significatività. Senza la pelle, sotto la pelle, come in questi racconti, la realtà muta forma e colore, si trasfigura, come una metamorfosi onirica o forse è meglio dire: come un'estasi mistica.
Infine, per me che non sono esperto di extreme horror e splatterpunk, questi racconti qui sono un po' la continuazione del discorso iniziato da Clive Barker con quel capolavoro di immaginazione macabra che si intitola "In collina, le città" e che contiene alcune immagini che mi sono rimaste marchiate a fuoco nella memoria anche dopo anni dalla prima lettura. E già questo, oltre alla qualità a tratti commovente della scrittura, basta a rendermi interessante questa traboccante e genialoide Charlee Jacob.

Questa raccolta di brevi racconti è una corsa tra menti folli, macabre, bizzarre, ma anche tra menti reali, e per questo ancora più angoscianti.
Un libro adatto soltanto a chi vuole affrontare i limiti del macabro. Per chi vuole vedere in faccia la depravazione e i mostri. Un libro che, a modo suo, attraverso fantasmi e demoni, ma anche un linguaggio schietto, crudo e senza censure, insegna al lettore lezioni indimenticabili.
Un testo che mette alla prova i limiti del nostro essere, spingendoci verso menti che quei limiti li hanno superati da un bel pezzo.

Io l'ho amato, accettando ogni sua inquietante sfumatura.

Ci sono stati dei racconti che mi hanno colpito meno, altri che non ho neppure capito a pieno (perché quest'autrice ha una mente davvero contorta) e poi ci sono stati quelli che mi hanno lasciato il segno, perché davvero significativi.

Ve lo consiglio? Sì, ma solo se avete il fegato di portare avanti la lettura, perché potrebbe davvero destabilizzare il lettore sbagliato.

L'unica vera pecca di questo libro è la presenza di refusi. Servirebbe un'ultima revisione per renderlo perfetto.

In una parola Tremendo...in senso buono, un antologia di racconti con contenuti estremi ( stupri, abusi, mutilazioni, solo per dirne alcuni) quindi forse non adatti a tutti, però è molto ben scritto ed alcuni racconti meritano l' acquisto anche da soli...spero di poter leggere qualcosa di altro di questa autrice perché veramente merita.

Charlee Jacob, Dread in the Beast (Necro Publications, 1999)

Necro have made a very large name for themselves in a very short span of time. It's pretty easy to see why from this lovely piece of work. As is often the case with high-quality small press releases, the bigs could take lessons from Necro in how to attractively, durably put together a book. (Would have been nice had the photo of Jacob on the rear flyleaf, rumored to be a topless photo, had been somewhat sharper, but only the most depraved of us are likely to quibble about that. And I'm not depraved. Really. Honest.)

But the attractiveness of the book itself is absolutely nothing when compared to what happens when you open the cover. While Jacob has made quite a name for herself with her first two novels, both of which are really, really ugly, her most effective work here is far quieter, working with the creep factor rather than the gross factor. Not, mind you, that the gross factor is absent. Readers picking up a book of Charlee Jacob's and expecting to find something akin to the collected works of Charles L. Grant are still going to be in for a rather rude awakening. Charlee Jacob is an extremely disturbed woman, and I mean that in the best of ways. Stories like "Fire" are going to turn the stomach of even the most cast-iron-gulleted reader, and will amuse and horrify as they do so. Established Jacob fans can rest easy that they're going to get their fair share of blood and guts.

But she quiets down every once in a while, and lets the pieces of her repertoire hinted at in her novels come to the fore. She has a very existential streak about her, and touched on it in some parts of Haunter, but it really comes out in the book's title story (not coincidentally also set abroad for much of its length, this time in Cairo). She has a deft touch for the gloomy, goth-esque macabre, as well, revealed in pieces like "Scalpel Mouth."

Many facets of Charlee Jacob here, every one of them delightfully grotesque. Definitely a collection worth finding (though it may be difficult, as only 352 copies were ever printed). ***1/2
