Regina Scott started writing novels in the third grade. Thankfully for literature as we know it, she didn’t actually sell her first novel until she had learned a bit more about writing. Since her first Regency romance was published in 1998, her stories have traveled the globe, with translations in many languages including Dutch, German, Italian, and Portuguese. She is now the author of more than 50 works of warm, witty historical romance.
She and her husband of 30 years reside in Washington State on the way to Mt. Rainier. Regina Scott has driven four in hand, learned to fence, sailed on a tall ship, and dressed as a Regency dandy, all in the name of research, of course. An enjoyable historical romance that centers on Irish immigration to America and the Irish gangs that formed in New York City. These gangs push this family to begin anew in the logging frontier town of Seattle, Washington. Rich with historical Seattle detail, INSTANT FRONTIER FAMILY is perfect for those looking for an unusual story.
Maddie O’Rourke sends to New York for her brother and sister as soon as she has a home and business to provide for them in Seattle. Her brother and sister stayed with a friend while Maddie worked toward bringing them to her. Maddie has also paid passage for their companion, a woman who will work off her debt in Maddie’s new bakery.
Imagine Maddie’s surprise when the woman supposedly accompanying her siblings turns out to be a man! Of course, her brother and sister adore Michael Haggerty and expect Maddie to marry him. Maddie will not give up her independence for any man. But Maddie has never met someone like this charming, hard-working, sensible and brave Irishman.
I enjoyed the characters and the plot of this story. I was especially enamored by the Irish history which was excellently portrayed. There are so few historical romances that focus on Irish history in early America that this fact alone sets this book apart. But there is so much more to appreciate after the characters and plot draw you in. The characters are well-drawn and interesting, influencing the reader’s empathy to their plight. Maddie’s bakery and laundry business plays a key role in some subtle suspense while being very believable and realistic.
I am especially fond of Maddie. She represents the strong women who helped build the frontier towns. This particular character is a great example of female independence without sacrificing family, faith or love. Maddie’s sister Ciara reminds me of Nellie Oleson in the LITTLE HOUSE series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Ciara gives Maddie quite a bit of trouble before she becomes repentant. Ciara thought Maddie left them with no intent of a reunion so Maddie has to earn Ciara’s trust. Maddie’s little brother doesn’t stand out quite as much as he’s much more respectful and behaved.
Ignore the cheesy cover and just dive into this book. It’s not about a happy family who lives in a cabin in the woods as the cover would have you believe. It’s a frontier story, but it’s more about working within a frontier logging community and making it a town. It’s about women fending for themselves without becoming the wife to the highest bidder. It’s about a dysfunctional family trying to find their way together once they’re reunited. Women were very much the minority and in high demand in the western towns during this time in history, but that doesn’t mean that women couldn’t make a viable path for themselves before they fall in love. This is that story.
Michael Haggerty is an unusual hero who isn’t too proud to do laundry and baking if it helps Maddie. Michael isn’t so good at picking trustworthy friends but in the end he’s a standup guy who protects his own.
If you’re looking for an unusual historical that beautifully portrays the Irish family and their solidarity, try INSTANT FRONTIER FAMILY. I was pleasantly surprised by the authenticity of the historical detail. If the previous books in this FRONTIER BACHELORS series are similar to INSTANT FRONTIER FAMILY, then I’ll be reading one after another myself. Just what I was looking for! My thanks to Regina Scott for the thoughtful, original, realistic and respectful portrayal of this Irish immigrant story.
I bought this book in print as part of my Love Inspired Historical reader subscription. If you haven’t read these books yet, try INSTANT FRONTIER FAMILY as proof of this imprint’s enjoyable, wholesome stories.

I love the setting of this series, during the early settlement of Seattle. There were opportunities for people that they never had in the tenements of New York. Even though Michael faces racism against his Irish heritage, he and Maddie thrive in their new home. The contrast is especially shown through preteen Ciara's eyes as she compares the "new world" to the only place she had ever known. Michael and Maddie both have their reasons for avoiding marriage, but as their friendship blossoms to romance, those reasons are put to the test. I liked how they developed faith and trust in each other over time and through their experiences together. There are elements of suspense with the vandalism against the Irish in town and a possible uprising. Also enjoyed the brief cameos of characters from previous books in the series.

MY REVIEW This is the third book in this series that I've read, I don't know how I missed "The Bride Ship" but I did, and I have enjoyed each one. I like Regina's stories and leaned some about how the Irish were treated when they arrived in this country in this book. She also shows how you should not judge people by what you "think" you know about them. If you like Christian Historical fiction this will be a must read, as the whole series is. Yes, I will get that first book in the series read, again I don't know how I missed it! I have read some of Regina's stories in several Omnibus books and thoroughly enjoyed those as well, check them out also.
I was given this book by the author as part of her review team this year in return for an honest review.
Instant Frontier Family was a really good read. I enjoyed it a lot, although the ending wasn't my cup of tea just because I wish something would have happened a different way.
I liked the characters and how the MC owned a bakery. The thefts/vandalism made the story somewhat suspenseful, which was great.
All in all, a very nice read.

“Instant Frontier Family” is a sweet and mysterious read & the fourth installment of the “Frontier Bachelors” series by author Regina Scott. Since the beginning of book one we are introduced to the spunky Maddie O’Rourke, she intrigued me from the start and I couldn’t wait to read her story. As expected the feisty red-head is determined and knows her mind. She definitely is a no-nonsense, realistic character who wants full control. I loved Maddie’s character but, she was slightly annoying at times. She craved security for her and her siblings yet she was very determined she would provide that security herself and that she would never marry at first. Because of her being so strong willed that is why I personally found her a bit exasperating at times. Other than that, I really liked her character. Michael Haggerty is a large but gentle hero and I automatically fell in love with him. He balances out Maddie in many ways. Like her, he is cautious but not overly much so. He loved & cared for her siblings so much that it drew me to him even more. He was always looking out for others and helping when and wherever he could no matter how hard it was on him. I have to say that even though he was big and strong, he was able to show emotion. There’s isn’t really anything I disliked about him. As this book started, I felt it was just a tad slow but picked up as you went into the story. Also, I personally felt like it ended a bit too quickly. However, the little bit of mystery thrown in there was great & I enjoyed every minute of that. All in all I thought this book was a sweet and enjoyable read and I do recommend it to anyone who enjoys a good historical romance with a little bit of mystery mixed in. I give this book four stars. I was provided a copy of this book by the author. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.
I enjoyed Instant Frontier Family as I have every Regina Scott story I've read, however I wasn't as impressed with Maddie's story as I thought I would be; I liked her better as a supporting character in the first three books to this series, while I didn't really see her as heroine material...[spoilers] Maddie is somewhat of a flirt and the hero notes this on multiple occasions, yet it doesn't seem to bother him because 'she's just doing it to build her business', and I was actually rather shocked that it was she who proposed to Michael in the end, rather than the other way around, and-again-he didn't have a problem with it. Little Aiden is adorable and I loved his relationship with Maddie, while Ciara really annoyed me (though that was what the author wanted). I did really like Michael's character though, and so was disappointed that- in my opinion- he didn't really deserve Maddie. Don't get me wrong! Maddie is a spunky Irish lass that adds a fun and lighthearted element to this series, her story was simply my least favourite. I enjoyed meeting Nora briefly in this book, and look forward to hers and Simons Christmas story! (I guess I just have a soft spot for Wallin landing. :))
Instant Frontier Family is a great addition to the Frontier Bachelors series, yet the story definitely stands alone and can be enjoyed without having read the earlier novels.
I really liked these two main characters and their journey was such a special one to read about. Maddie is strong and determined, yet scared to trust in love. Michael is caring and reliable, yet has been hurt before. I loved watching these two begin to care for each other.
Maddie’s younger sister, Ciara, drove me a bit insane! The author did a very convincing job of making this little girl difficult. But, her attitude toward her situation and toward Maddie were an important part of the story.
Instant Frontier Family has a great setting and a very interesting plot that is connected to their Irish heritage. I loved their Irish brogues that came through very nicely in the way the sentences were worded. It was a very enjoyable story.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Yet another book in the "Frontier Bachelors" that I struggled to complete... I guess my reading interest primarily lie with western historical romances afterall. I found it weak that the heroine proposed marriage to the hero... and the heronine's young sister was also unbelievably bratty for this particular time and age. And yeah, the overall storyline was pretty boring and glaringly obvious.
I am just continuing to trudge my way through this particular slow moving series... I'm hoping that "A Convenient Christmas Wedding" will be a pleasant surprise. Fingers crossed. Again :P
I was originally attracted to Regina Scott’s novels because of their Regency setting, but her recent releases from Love Inspired have been in the Frontier Bachelor series, set in the Washington Territory in the 1860s. I have enjoyed each book so far despite the different time and place, and one of the reasons for that is the novels touch on family love as well as the romance between the hero and heroine.
The characters in this novel are by turns endearing and infuriating—sometimes both in the same chapter—but they are not flat. I enjoy the Irish twist to this story; I have very little background regarding Irish immigrants to the U. S. but there is a lot of information within these pages, both historical and cultural.
As I have come to expect from any Regina Scott novel, historical detail is impeccable and woven not just into the descriptions but into the very dialog the characters speak. For example, Maddie refers to Ciara and Aiden as her “bone and blood” rather than the more common term today of “flesh and blood.” It’s the minutiae that keep me coming back to her novels again and again, the authentic and unexpected small specifics that set her writing and research above many other authors I have read.
Interestingly, parts of the story could have been taken from more recent headlines with gang violence and intimidation. There is also a subtle thread of entitlement, of wanting only the best, regardless of the cost to others or even to the person so caught up in what he wants that he can’t see the damage inflicted. This highlights that despite what we might be tempted to think, problems people faced in the past and the ones we battle today are much the same in spite of the passage of time—I find that an encouragement in my own struggles.
Another uplifting component to this book is the Christian aspect and an exploration of our relationship with God—a personal faith opposed to a distant Creator uninvolved in our lives. A sometimes arrogant self-sufficiency contrasts with trust in One greater than ourselves, One who loves us beyond what we can see when we are consumed by the day to day demands of living.
And the romance! This is a fantastic story about two people convinced that love is not worth the risk, and yet Ms. Scott still finds ways to let the sparks fly between the characters at various points in the novel, some of them unexpected and more beautiful for the surprise they bring.
Many elements combine to make this a wonderful book and well worth the time spent reading. I would highly recommend it to those who enjoy historical romance or who have an interest in Irish history in the U. S. And for those, like me, who found her writing through her Regency novels, there’s even a nod to Pride and Prejudice—an unexpected but welcome bonus to this delightful tale!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author in exchange for this honest review. All of the opinions expressed are my own.
Instant Frontier Family is the latest in author Regina Scott's 'Frontier Bachelor ' series and a fine one it is, too. I do believe she has more from that series for us and I'm happy to hear that.
Maddie O'Rourke's orphaned half brother and sister arrive safely in Seattle, with a man, who was supposed to be a woman! They hope she'll wed Michael Haggerty but Maddie has no intention of marrying anyone! She's got too much to do running her laundry service and bakery. She is determined to be a lady of means one day.
Michael had run afoul of a deadly gang in New York and escorted the children to Seattle to their sister, hoping to get a new start. But it seems danger is coming to all of them. Will Maggie and Michael trust God to take care of them, or will they follow their heads and try to do it their own way?
This was yet another great book by Regina Scott. I fell in love with her Regencies years ago and have decided I will read anything she writes. Her books are well written with believable characters and great plots. I always look forward to the next when the close the book on one I've just finished reading. She always includes a wonderful spiritual message as well.
*I was given a complimentary copy of the book by the author in exchange for my honest review. My opinions are true and my own.
Characters full of sass and wit, adventurous minds, and willing to go the distance to get what they dreamed of. This story is so full of positive thoughts, spunk, and people with the guts to go for it. What ever the it is they are looking for. The early settlers in the Seattle area, Irish by heritage, and orphan siblings in a family matters, they work hard to build a new life away from New York and the dangers the city have, for the Irish in particular. Maddie didn't expect Michael, and was not prepared for the attraction she feels for him. But since Michael took care of her siblings through the trip to Seattle, she was giving him a place to live, until he found a place of his own. But trouble comes to the town, the Irish seems to be the target. As if it wasn't enough trouble with just surviving, with everything else Maddie and Michael had on their plate. The story is fast paced, the characters are a delight, the connection between Maddie and Michael adorable. They are there for each other, work well together as a team, always supporting each other in troubles and every day trials, as well as in triumph. They trust their faith to guide them, God protect them, and guide them in their path in life. A sweet, uplifting story about the troubles and life of the early settlers in the Seattle area ~ Four Spoons
Instant Frontier Family Frontier Bachelors Series Book Four Maddie O'Rourke is determined to make her own way in life. She had traveled to Seattle with Mercer, but she was not going to be a bride. That didn't mean she wouldn't smile and perhaps flirt a bit to help sell her baked goods to the men in Seattle. Especially if it meant more money to help raise her half sister and brother.
Michael Haggerty knew he was not what the fiery redhead expected when he delivered her siblings to her. She also didn't know that it most likely had saved his life by doing so. New York was no longer safe for him.
Maddie was determined not to fall for any man, including the helpful Irishman who she seemed to acquire with her siblings. Michael was determined to make sure the youngsters were safe with their sister and repay Maddie for his traveling expenses. Neither expected the danger around them...from others...and from their own hearts. **Received from author for honest review http://justjudysjumbles.blogspot.com/...
I wish I would quit wandering into the middle of a series like this. I hate the feeling that there's all kinds of people I should already know as I start a book. That said, the history of the books that come before, is handled well and I think I was able to catch up all right.
Maddie lives on the frontier - out in the brand new city of Seattle. She's come West to make a life for herself and her siblings. She seems to have done it, so enter Michael Haggarty who has brought her brother and sister to live with her. Certainly not the matronly woman she thought she was hiring.
Of course there are sparks. Both individuals are set on never marrying. So naturally they fall in love with each other. The children are believable, though at times I really wanted to give Ciara a good shake.
Overall a decent story that I enjoyed. I'll go back and look for the rest of the series if I can. My only complaint is that while the cover is lovely, it seems to have very little to do with the story at all.
Maddie O'Rourke is a determined, hard working lady. She takes in laundry and is starting a bakery. Now she is having her little brother and sister come live with her from New York. But the lady who was supposed to have been their escort was actually a man.
Michael made himself some enemies in New York. So he took the job as a escort to two children in his Aunt's orphanage from New York to Seattle. He is determined to make sure the kids are alright and to pay back his ticket price.
Maddie and Michael are Irish. It deals with some of the trials the Irish faced in America. How they got gangs to protect themselves and they got out of control. Also deals with life in the Frontier. Now violence has spread to the west coast.
Lots of drama, cute characters, mystery and unwanted romance. Makes the Instant Frontier Family a entertaining story to read. Also a clean story.
I was given this ebook to read from Netgalley and Harlequin. In return I agreed to give a honest review of Instant Frontier Family.
I only recently started reading books from Harlequin's Love Inspired Historical line, and this might just be my favorite so far. It was a quick read, the storyline was interesting and the characters were engaging. The setting was believable (I'm a native of the Seattle area) and this was, overall, a nice, well balanced and enjoyable story.
Just ignore the title choice and that the cover looks like it is set off in the woods, instead of on an early Seattle street. If you are looking for a shorter inspirational historical fiction romance novel, a light read with a relationship that grows first as a friendship and blossoms into more against the wills of two not too stubborn Irish Americans, then I would recommend you give this novel a go. Still not sure? Two words: chicken races.

I really enjoyed Instant Frontier Family . Maddie’s work ethic and her willingness to work herself to the bone to provide for her family shows a love and willingness to be God’s disciple that many people don’t have nowadays. It was fun to watch her fall in love especially as she protested that she did not want that more than anything else. Her siblings were a great source of annoyance even to me as the reader. She kept saying how she felt guilty that she had a short temper with them and yet, I don’t know that I could have been as sweet as she was to them. All in all Instant Frontier Family is a great read and a terrific addition to this series!

I love historical fiction, so this book was a great choice for me. Maddie O'Rourke is one determined woman, and no one is getting in the way of her plan for success in life and business! Not even a very handsome new arrival in Seattle. The way to a man's heart might be his stomach, but the way to Maddie's heart was a bit harder to figure out. Pick up this book and get to know the early days of the Washington territory, and imagine how life must have been for a single woman who didn't want to conform to being what everyone else thought she should be. There's a little danger, a lot of faith, a little romance, and even a cat with attitude. Something for everyone.
This is the fourth book in a series, but I was able to read it as a standalone and was perfectly fine with it. If you are looking for a quick, enjoyable read with characters you fall in love with then look no farther. I like the way the story progresses instead of rushing into a romance. The characters are believable including the children and the struggles they have. I recommend this book if you enjoy a good historical romance. Thank you Regina Scott for trusting me to read this and give an honest review.
Instant Frontier Family is an engaging story and a wonderful addition to the Frontier Bachelors series!
Regina Scott always paints a vivid picture with her words, and I loved the details and descriptions she included in this story. I could just hear the Irish brogue as I read! I especially enjoyed the development of the relationships between Maddie and her siblings and between Maddie and Michael. Their story is fraught with drama and danger, and I enjoyed every word!
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. All thoughts expressed are my own.
"Scott does a splendid job penning two wonderful characters who face hardships and discrimination, but with faith are able to overcome these obstacles. The realistic epilogue is a perfect reminder that love and family are the most important things" (RT Book Reviews, 4 stars).
Nice story. The heroine is in Seattle, having traveled there alone, with the intention of starting a business so she can bring her brother and sister to join her. The story opens with her on the docks waiting for them to arrive, with the older woman she asked for, to come help with her laundry business. And they show up with a man. One who needed to get out of New York because he got in trouble with the Irish gang. He's obviously the hero. The heroine is angry, because she really needs help with her businesses and she doubts this guy is willing to wrangle wet shirts. But he steps up. And the story proceeds as expected. There is trouble from the Irish gang someone wants to import from New York. It's a nice story, with very little "preaching" for an inspirational. They attend church, but it's very non-denominational for a bunch of presumably Irish Catholics, which I found amusing. Mostly it's just a sweet, frontier romance.
Instant Frontier Family is a gentle, feel-good story that hits all the right notes. Maddie is a strong, determined heroine doing her best to build a life for her younger siblings, and Michael brings a steady, dependable presence that really complements her. What I appreciated most is that while both characters are strong, they’re also human—they have fears, doubts, and moments of weakness that make them feel real.
The pacing is perfect. The story unfolds in a way that lets the characters breathe and grow, with just the right balance of challenges, heart, and quiet moments. Their relationship develops naturally, and the chemistry between them is tender and believable.
The historical setting adds texture without overwhelming the story, and the faith elements are woven in with a light, hopeful touch.
This story centers on the Irish immigrants who made their way to America to get away from British rule. In this story Maddie O'Rourke leaves the dangerous New York City and leaves on a bride ship headed to Seattle, WA. After getting her bakery going, she makes arrangements for her brother and sister to come join her with a chaperone. They arrive and she finds that instead of a woman Michael Haggerty has come with the children. In this wild wooded difficult land they have to go thru some dangerous situations, along with some danger that followed them from New York. During that time the Irish were consider just slightly Blacks and Indians. This book while written as romance, is also a bit of a history lesson.
If you enjoy a story of faith, strength and romance then this story ( and series) is for you. Each book is a stand alone in the series but I find the characters and the background plot stronger due to being read in sequence. That being said the stories in each are so well crafted they keep the reader engaged.
The strong hero and heroine have similar challenges in that they have fear of committing due to past circumstances, but find strength and faith together.
I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
This story had some nice additions that made it more than just a romance. The kids were cute and made nice secondary characters. There was a bit of a thriller element threatening the family that was quite mysterious. The feisty Irish tempers made for nice sparks, as well.
Instant Frontier Family is number four of Frontier Bachelors by Regina Scott. It takes place in 1866 in Seattle. Maddie O'Rourke leaves her younger half brother and half sister in New York when she moved to Seattle hoping to make a better life for herself and then bring her sister and brother to Seattle. Maddie now owns her own bakery and has some money. She hired a lady to escort them to Seattle. When they show up instead of a lady it is a man, Michael Haggerty. They had been on the boat three months. Michael and the children got very close. Michael sleep on the floor since he has no other place to live with no money. Michael end up helping Maddie at the bakery while looking for a job. They end up liking each other. A great historical romance with the ups and downs of a relationship. The bakery burns down.
It’s been a while since I’ve read a Love Inspired book, and I was pleasantly surprised! Either they’ve come up in the world, or Regina Scott (a new author to me) is a cut above the rest. This was a good, solid read. (I’m somewhat stingy with my stars, I suppose. There’s nothing wrong with a 3-star book in my opinion… it’s a good book.) I liked how independent and capable Maddie was, and how well the main characters meshed together. The romance was a little abrupt, but you have to pack it into a short book. An enjoyable, quick read. Well done!
I received this book in a goodreads giveaway, but I was in no way pressured to post my opinion here.
