He wants revenge against the brothers who betrayed him but first he has to get past the one man he can’t resist…
At the tender age of eight, Rafe Barretti lost everything. His parents, his childhood, his innocence. And the brothers who were supposed to protect him let him go instead. Twenty years later and he’s finally ready to exact his revenge by taking away everything they hold dear – their company, their reputations, their futures. But even that isn’t enough - their loved ones will have to pay too and all their precious secrets are fair game.
Former mercenary Cade Gamble’s only job is to take down the hacker stealing sensitive, private information from Barretti Security Group and Cade is damn good at his job. But there’s more at stake because the co-founders of BSG, Dom and Vin Barretti, are like family and no one touches Cade’s family. The fact that the vengeful young man turns out to be the youngest of the Barretti clan doesn’t matter. But when their tumultuous encounters turn into something more, Cade will have to decide between protecting the only family he has and giving in to his need to save Rafe from himself.
Can Cade help Rafe find redemption so he can forgive the sins of the past or will Rafe’s quest for vengeance destroy them both?
Note: This book contains explicit M/M content and is intended for mature audiences
Although this book is part of a series, it can be read as a stand-alone. No cliffhangers.
***Special Note: I've decided to make Book 1 in this series, Loving Vin (M/F) free but it is only available through my website sloanekennedy.com/barretti-security-s...
Good lord but this read like Days of Our Lives circa 1987—you know when John Black turned out to be Roman Brady, Marlena's presumed dead husband? Then Marlena fell into a coma and recovered only to be kidnapped! And Kimberly thought Victor might be the father of her baby!!!
YEAH. Like that.
There is no way Rafe's biological father would have been allowed to gain custody of him; he wasn't even on the birth certificate. It also didn't make much sense that Rafe would seek revenge on his brothers of all people.
And Cade was so damn pushy. He stalks Rafe for half the book. Then Rafe is cured with Cade's magic penis.
On a positive note, this book made me realize I need to start a security business ASAP. That way I can become rich and famous like the Barretti brothers.
⭐ 3.3 "this might've been free on Kindle Unlimited, but the box of tissues it required WAS NOT" stars ⭐
Sooo, you know how I implied before that the angst in Sloane Kennedy's books was starting to lose its spark for me?
Well….
This one had me weeping like a week-old baby!!
************
Something about the way family played such a pivotal role in this really got to me. You know that deep, sinking feeling in your chest that has you googling possible heart attack symptoms? Yes, that kind.
Yet having most of the angst contained only to one of the MCs helped. While it still felt gratuitous to a certain degree, the fact that one of the leads was the stereotypical tortured soul while the other exhibited a lot more emotional stability was a big relief. It provided some much-needed balance and, in turn, made it easier to root for them. There’s only so much grief the main couple can have before I start cheering for them to go to therapy instead of getting together, after all.
As usual with the series, this featured a dual POV. The Baretti brother this second installment focused on was Rafe, the youngest sibling and someone who got tossed into hell on earth as a kid, left alone to survive horrible circumstances that ultimately drove him to become a rather bitter and enraged adult. He was a remarkably flawed individual, to say the very least, and quite the major jerk at times… so of course that means he was my favorite.
(Plus not to go on a mini tangent, but I actually appreciated how his toxic coping was depicted. Victims don't only come in a one-size-fits-all package, and Rafe was the perfect example of how ugly bottled-up grief and trauma can start turning your insides. In a strange sort of way, I found his deeply defective ways of coping that much more realistic and therefore relatable.)
Not gonna lie, however, some of what was uncovered of his past suffering was bordering on incredible… as in actually unbelievable that is. In truth Sloane Kennedy's fashion, Rafe had the sob story to end all sob stories.
How Rafe ended up sounding a lot of times.
Now… opposite him, the other MC Cade wasn't a paragon of virtue either (because big alpha ex-mercenary was exactly what we were promised and what we got). For most of the book, both men were reluctantly circling the other while alternating between growing closer and further apart.
And speaking of said circling, the way this started off as an enemies-to-lovers kind of thing?Another delicious point (which led to some pretty hot steam early on, because hate sex is the name of the game). If anything, I would’ve wished that had stayed the case for longer… instead of doing a blink and you’ll miss it transition into love. Truly, seeing them try to justify their need to be closer while denying the attraction was probably my highlight while I read.
The kind of dynamic these two had in the beginning, and so much more interesting than the regular lovey dovey neediness from the second half of the book, if you ask me.
All in all, still definitely a step up from book one for me. Not quite “there” in terms of pacing or what I wished the chemistry between MCs had stayed as, but still a mighty easy read and pretty perfect for all of your “does crying with books count as therapy?” needs.

Keywords to figure out if this one might work for you:
Tortured souls. OTT to the nth degree. Short and breezy. Codependency. Overcoming trauma. Big loving family. Hospital scenes. Need-you-now sex scenes. Lots of steam. Versatile couples. Dominance/Submission (but make it lite). Believable character development? What’s dat? And finally, the angstiest of angst, of course.
************ Barretti Security series by Sloane Kennedy (part of the Sloane Kennedy Literary Universe of SKLU for short, full reading order here
Rafe blames his brothers for everything he went through as a child after he was taken from them. In his mind, they didn't try hard enough to save him and it was all their fault he had a horrible childhood. Now as an adult he wants to ruin them, and he won't stop until he gets to see them break. Not even when Cade Gamble, his brothers' friend, shows up and tries to reason with him.
I was not prepared for the emotions this book would make me feel. Rafe made me want to cry right along with him while holding him tight. Learning about his childhood was heartbreaking and seeing him break down in front of Cade killed my emotions. I loved that I was able to connect to his character as much as I did in this book.
Cade was so sexy, and very caring for Rafe and the issues he had. The fact that he stood up for him, tried to understand him, made me fall head over heels for his character. He was just so loving there was no way I wouldn't swoon over him. And sexy! The scenes he and Rafe had were enough to melt my panties right off.
Overall, I really enjoyed this book, it had everything I wanted and more. The emotions, the sexiness, and sweetness. I highly recommend this book for anyone that likes a good m/m story with a broken Hero that you will do anything to get to see heal.
Just as addicting as all the other Sloane Kennedy books I've read in the past few months.
There are parts where you'll have to leave reality at the door (I mean it. That bitch stays outside), so just enjoy the fast-paced, OTT and sexy ride.
In a nutshell, this is a hurt/comfort story where Cade's magical penis heals Rafe, but not before some cat and mouse games and then a big action movie scene where Rafe realizes his true feelings. Naturally, all of this takes place in between all the hot sex.
What a great story. Rafe was the brother that was taken away from his brothers Vin, Dom and Ren at a very young age not to be heard from until now. Rafe's story is sad, shocking and painful for what he had to endure growing up with the family he knew and loved by betrayed him he thought. Revenge takes over Rafe as an adult, to get back at his brothers. What untangles is amazing. The writing and story line is well worth the read and I will be looking for more of Sloane Kennedy's books to read.
Rafe and Cade were a very nice couple, and the insta lust/love didn't even bother me in this one. I just would have likes so e more interaction between Rafe and his brothers.
I can always tell when I'm reading an 'older' Sloane Kennedy book. They are shorter and contain less background. Not that they are bad, I just prefer the newer, longer books with more background and more feels.
Cade works for Dominic Barretti and he's been tasked to shadow the hacker who apparently is targeting he Barretti family for some reason. The hacker has treathened to reveal the secrets of some of the Barretti clan, but the brothers don't understand why.
When Cade follows the man, he finds out his name is Rafe Barretti. He is the brother who was taken from them when he was 8 years old, the brother the Barrettis never stopped looking for.
Rafe is angry. So very angry. He blames his brothers for not coming for him. For letting his biological father take him away. For letting his father pimp him out, rape him himself, and abuse him physically.
The Barretti's are way too happy, and Rafe is going to put an end to that. But he didn’t count on Cade. And when someone tries to kill Rafe, Cade takes it upon himself to protect Rafe...
I wasn't too sure about Rafe at first. He was pretty angry, and it wasn't even justified. So even though he was this angry person, I still started to like him when small parts of vulnerability shone through.
Cade and Rafe had a bit of a hate sex thing going on for the first half, but once they got that out of their system they became the couple I wanted them to be.
And of course this had enough hurt/comfort to make me happy.
I liked that this time the danger seemingly came from long lost brother, that he was messing with his own family. Not that they deserved it. The confrontation between three brothers in the middle of the book was one of my favorite moments in the book, and the profound effect it had on everyone involved. I loved how everything changed from that moment. Rafe purged all the hurt he was carrying for so long, and Cade was there to help him heal.
I liked that Cade, the perpetual playboy, changed for Rafe, because Rafe deserved someone who would give him his all. I liked the give and take of their relationship, and all the comfort Cade offered to Rafe when he needed it. Each consequent book just keeps getting better and better in my opinion. Each man that follows is angrier, more hurt and eager to lash out. I love it! I highly recommend it!
3.75 stars!! 💕 Loved it despite the heartbreaking moments. Although Rafe behaved like a jerk in the beginning😡, once we find out his backstory it is hard not to empathize. It was still difficult for me to reconcile with his change after he spends more time with Cade. The steam between them is off the charts 🔥💘and despite the understandable lack of trust between them initially. But Cade is certainly an amazing MC with a huge heart❤️.., I definitely liked him more than Rafe💕. The mystery of the enemy was insignificant and a little OTT in the end🙄. I wished that there was more time spent between the brothers😬, but the epilogue and HEA was certainly worth it after the emotional angsty read. 👍👍
This was book 2 in the"Barretti Security series. Rafe Barretti was taken from Dom and Vin twenty years ago right after there father killed there mother after he found out that she cheated and Rafe was not his child. When his bio dad showed up and took him. Gary Price was a piece of work he sold his eight year old son for gas and beer and he continued to pimp him out until he overdosed on heroin. Twenty years later Rafe seeking revenge on the family that he thought forgot about him by stealing information from"Barretti Security" he is a hacker and he was planning on using the info to hurt Vin and Dom. Former mercenary Cade Gamble's only job is to take down the hacker stealing sensitive, private information from Barretti Security Group and Cade is damn good at his job. Cade is the love them and leave them type but there is something about Rafe that has him drawn to him. When Rafe decides to give up his revenge he gives Dom the info he had after telling them all the things that happened to him. While in L. A. someone tries to kill him Cade comes to his rescue. Cade is a hot sexy male who comes from a family who didn't approve of him being gay he also had some rough teen years falling in with the wrong crowd. Turns out Rafe is the reason Vin found their other brother Ren who was held captive in the middle east. When Cade falls in love with Rafe he knows that he maybe setting himself up to be hurt. When he is hurt he also realized that he loves him and that he needs his family. This was a really good read it was full of emotions and tragic events Rafe went from losing his mother and father to beginning used by a man he doesn't know. Cade and Rafe had some really good hot sex scenes. This book was well written and well read I love the narrator Michael Pauley. I have been going back and forth between this series and "The Protectors by this author. I am looking forward to reading or listening to the next book in this series.
How is it possible that Rafe, best hacker and all, didn't even think about checking if his brothers have been looking for him all these years? I don't buy it.
Also, an asshole (a literal one) collapsed here. I mean, I know they flutter and throb sometimes in books, but I 'd never read about one collapsing before.
Holy Hell Redeeming Rafe was a heart wrenching story, young Rafe was ripped away from his brothers when he was only eight by his father and thrown into Hell.
Twenty years later Rafe is ready for his revenge against Dom and Vin his older brothers for abandoning him and not coming to save him, he is going to destroy them and their loved ones, he does not care who get caught in the crossfire.
Enter Cade he is watching Rafe to protect Dom and Vin who he considers family but circumstances change and Cade ends up being Rafe's bodyguard, these two are sexy together lots of steamy sex.
I felt so much for the three brothers the distance between them broke my heart especially for Dom and Rafe and the final chapter had me crying happy/sad tears and I loved the epilogue.
I missed Ren but hopefully he will find his way back to his brothers soon.
Loving Sloane Kennedy this was my sixth book in a month.
This book hurt like a bitch. I wanted to scrub my brain and forget what happened to poor young Rafe.
Rafe is 28 years old. He is trying to ruin his brothers lives. 20 years ago he lost everything. His mother, his siblings and his innocence. His biological father took him away and destroyed him. His brothers never came for him like they promised so now all he feels for them is hate and he wants revenge. There's just one thing he doesn't know. His brothers have been looking for him all this time.
Cade works for the Barreti's. They are trying to find who is hacking them and trying to hurt them. One night he meets the man and he says "tell my brothers I said hi" this shocks Cade, he can't believe the hot as hell man he wants is not only trying to destroy his bosses but is their little brother.
Dom and what's his name (I read 4 books in this universe I never learned the name of the older brother) are hurt deeply when they learn this information but they still have hopes so they decide to not do anything and let Rafe do whatever he wants. Cade doesn't care, so he takes actions in his own hands and takes Rafe. He bounds him and discovers something he didn't expected. When Rafe is bound, he has a panic attack. He is so broken. Rafe actually yells at his brothers what happened to him 20 years ago and this destroyes everyone.
Eventually Cade realizes someone is gunning for Rafe and he takes him to his apartment to protect him. Now Rafe needs to start to heal and maybe forgive his brothers.
I don't have much to say about this book. I guess I liked it, I just felt really bad for poor Rafe. I loved Cade and his unconditional love for Rafe. I love the fact that this writer doesn't show rape scenes (I hate them) Just talks about the events without flashbacks and it doesn't take anything away from the story.
In the end I was happy to see a better happy Rafe next to the strong Cade.
I have read so many of Sloane Kennedy’s books, but I have been reading more of her current releases and had not gotten around to the Barretti Security series which came out in print a few years ago. Having just been released on audio, it was a great way to revisit these characters who have briefly crossed over into the author’s other worlds. This book is number two in the series, with the first one being m/f, but it works fine to start here. This series, however, is also a spin-off of Kenendy’s earlier Escort series, but still, I was able to follow along.
Sometimes going back and reading an author’s earlier work can catch you up on characters, and while that did happen here, this book did not stand out amongst the rest. The Barretti brothers lost their mother in an act of violence when Rafe was eight, and Rafe, having a different biological father, was sent to live with him. From the moment Rafe went with his father, Gary, his life became an endless story of abuse. How Gary came to get custody of Rafe is glossed over, but how someone like him would have been given custody was a complete mystery. Also, their mother was shown to be a loving, nurturing woman who took care of her children and it was unclear how she even met Gary in the first place.
True rating: 3.5 stars. Really enjoyed this, but the ending felt rushed to me and that's what kept me from giving this book a solid 4. I would have liked a bit more closure on Rafe's healing process with his brothers and of course a bit more time focusing on Rafe's HEA with Cade, especially after that out-of-the-blue at the end. If things wrapped up more "solidly", this would have translated into more stars. Shame :-(. I own the books on all the brothers so I am definitely eager to continue on :-). If the other books touch on Cade & Rafe (and provide me with the closure I seek), I may just revise my rating of this story.
This book was so good! Rafe is the younger brother to Dom, Vin and Ren. He was taken by his father when he was young and forced to do things that were horrible for money by his father with men. That was a really hard part to read I felt so bad for Rafe for everything he had be through. He was so mad at his brothers blaming them for never coming and saving him when he needed them. He wanted revenge but little did he know that Cade was trailing him. Cade works for Dom and Vin with the security company and as soon as he laid eyes on Rafe he was attracted to him from the start. The sparks between these two were amazing and the love the feel for each other you could defiantly feel. You get you angst with this book plus the steam which really was so hot! You also meet a lot of different characters too. I read this as a stand alone without reading the first book in the series and I did not feel lost at all. I thought the way the author wrote these characters and this story was so good! It grabbed me from the start and I could not put it down until the end.
All together I really loved this book! I would recommend this book! I received this book free in exchange for an honest review from Inked Rainbow Reads.
4.25 stars from me. I'm really enjoying discovering this author's work, second read and second winner. This story is part of a series, but I read it as a standalone and didn't feel as though I'd missed much without reading book 1, which was m/f.
The Barretti brothers are the main characters, and this story featured Rafe, who was the cuckoo in the nest as far as his 'father' was concerned, and when he died, Rafe's real father turned up and soon got him turning tricks. Rafe had never forgiven his older brothers Dom, Vin and Ren for not coming to find him and as the years went by, his anger and resentment festered and he decided to get his own back on them by hacking into their security systems and telling the world their family secrets.
Cade Gamble, a former mercenary and now part of the Barretti security set-up, has been tracking Rafe all along and isn't about to let his friends lives go 'arse over tip'. He needs to know why Rafe is trying to destroy his brothers, and the fact that he's hot as hell, just fuels the fire burning in Cade's gut. I'll leave this one here....
This series always manages to at some point smack me in the feels. While I do feel like Rafe and Cade's relationship did come out of nowhere the emotional moments still got to me. It was like I jumped over the why are the interested in each other, straight into the "yep they're supposed to be together." And well I just didn't care.
There's heavy dramatics in this series, but I've enjoyed every one of them. I liked how devoted Cade was to Rafe. His gentle care really brought Rafe slowly back into the fold after how hellish his life has been. Can't wait to get to see Ren finally find his way home now too.
