Travel photojournalist Chloe McConnaughey thought she understood her brother Tate — a brilliant programmer willing to compromise anything to get ahead. She just didn’t know that included her. When Tate dies unexpectedly, Chloe copes by taking an assignment in the Caribbean where she meets Jack, a charming Manhattan escapee who almost has her believing life could turn around. But the illusion is shattered when a series of bizarre incidents leaves them framed for murder and running from killers convinced that Chloe is the key to questions Tate left behind. Suddenly Jack’s timely entrance into her life seems more than coincidental, but with nowhere else to turn, Chloe must trust this man who is not only charming, but also dangerous, and much better at evading capture than he should be. Strained to the breaking point by a life consistently marked by tragedy, Chloe fights a sense of hopelessness, confronting the age-old question: if it’s not all random—if God does exist—why would He allow bad things to happen to good people? Hunted from the tiny island of St. Gideon all the way to Miami, Chloe and Jack desperately search for the evidence that will prove their innocence and eliminate them as targets of the shadowy conspiracy that will stop at nothing to make its problems go away.

If you like suspense novels, you will love this book! The suspense started from the very beginning and kept me wondering and guessing and questioning all the way through.
Chloe goes to the island of St. Gideon to escape reality after her brother’s death. She didn’t know that her brother had troubles that would follow her now that he was gone. With killers after her, the only person she can turn to is Jack, the man she just met. But can she really trust him?
This story is so well written! The action just keeps coming, and the twists continue to the very end. The settings are skillfully described. I could really picture where they were and what was happening. The characters are well developed. Really, I just liked every thing about this book!
This is the author’s debut novel. I will anxiously be waiting for book two to be released, and for each of her books after that!
I received a copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

My Thoughts <3
This book was one of the best suspense I've read this year! I am officially a fan. :-)
I loved everything about this story. The characters we're intriguing, and there were plenty of twists and turns that definitely kept me on my toes. I also love how D.L. Wood threads message of the gospel throughout the plotline.
If your a fan of Dani Pettrey, Irene Hannon, or Lisa Harris, I highly recommend you get your hands on a copy of this book!
RUN - don't walk to grab your copy of this book! You will not regret it. From the first chapter I was completely consumed and even missed a football Saturday in the SEC engrossed in this book. It has romance, suspense, mystery and every chapter left me wondering what could happen next. Is he good? Is he bad? I couldn't figure it out - every chapter kept me guessing as the plot developed and deepened, twisting and turning to raise more questions or more possibilities. There have been very few books that have kept me so riveted that I've completed in 24 hours but this book is now part of that very short list! Now for the cons: I have to wait until Spring of 2016 for the next book in the series! Great job Mrs. Wood and can't wait to read more!
I had a hard time putting this book down. There are enough twists and turns to keep you glued to the page. Wood does a great job of blending suspense, romance, and God throughout the story. It's a book romantic suspense readers will enjoy. Readers who like a lot of action will be happy as well. Wood is never preachy and her relationship with Jack kept me wondering what was going to happen when she discovered his faults...and like all good writers, Wood wove his faults in nicely. :-)
Excellent read! Finished quickly too. I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked this up, but I really enjoyed it. While it's a Christian book, I didn't find it preachy. The romance portion was well done but I especially enjoyed the "thriller" aspect. All the plot twists made plenty of sense and I didn't find myself wondering "Where did that come from?!" Clearly Wood is well familiar with storytelling and I'm looking forward to seeing more books in the future.
Unintended Target is a great read! The author drew me in from the very beginning & I couldn't put it down. The characters are very well developed & Wood's storytelling is exceptional. This book is a great thriller that would be a fantastic movie. I can't wait for the second book in this series.
Enjoyed this book. I have to admit it started a little slow for me (But the character setup was excellent), but once it got going I couldn't put it down. Great Plot, some interesting twists and some wholesome romance all rolled up into a Good Christian read. The Gospel was clearly layed out and the characters were real! GOOD STUFF!
I love this book. Chloe's life was in turmoil. Someone is following her and her life is in jeopardy. She misses her brother who is her twin by 3 minutes. Her twin brother feels responsible to take care of her. He wants to provide for the both of them in the best way. Unfortunately, the way he went about it was not legal. This is when all of Chloe's problems begin. It is a very good thing that she met Jack because Chloe doesn't know who to trust.
If you like suspense, drama and non-stop danger, you will enjoy this book. There also was a great Christian theme in this book. I finished the book in two days' time because it moved so quickly!
D.L. Wood perfectly blends together mystery and suspense with just the right amount of romance and spirituality. The book never ventures into the over-the-top romance that is not believable; instead she paints a picture of two broken people attracted to each other that realistically draw towards each other throughout the book. As far as the spirituality of the book, D.L. Wood never gets preachy; instead, she gives us realistic conversations that many of us have had at one point or other in our lives. And while "Unintended Target" gives us both romance and spirituality, it is at its core an edge of your seat thriller where you like and root for the main characters. You will enjoy the mystery as well as the settings/locations of the novel. I will admit, though, that was one thing I did not find believable...that this was D.L. Wood's first novel. I eagerly await the next book from this up-and-coming writer.
I wasn't familiar with the author when I saw this book in a Christian Fiction Kindle email for specials but the description of the book sounded interesting so figured I would give it a shot. Very glad that I did as I wasn't disappointed in the least. Tad slow in the beginning but it gradually picked up steam and then kept me hooked until the end. I liked Chloe's character and the questions that she had about faith from a non believer's stand point since most of us can relate, specifically Why does God allow bad things to happen?
If you like suspense with a little romance I highly recommend it. Can't wait to read the next in the series, Unintended Witness.
I enjoyed the suspense in this debut novel. The romance happened rather quickly and was a bit hard to believe. The story was a good one and keep me turning pages (actually, flipping screens on my Kindle).
As a side note, this is the only Christian Fiction novel I've read so with many references to drinking beer when the novel didn't include an alcoholic character.
Unintended Target was quite a coaster ride. Some sad news and suspicious background was enough to send Chloe McConnaughey to the Caribbean to escape her grief and muddled thoughts.
A suspicious man (Tate) enters her life in a most unusual way. Slowly she began to trust him and some of her life unfolded. But from then on it’s nothing but danger, running, being shot at and being framed around every corner.
There were two underlying arcs within the constant danger and suspense… a gentle faith arc and a gentle romance which most of the way through was a mild attraction, but friendship only. Loved it.
Just an FYI: I don’t recall any real "language" in the book. There was alcohol use by the main characters. They also slept in the same bed (because there were no others available), however, nothing beyond sleeping.
The ending was very odd. I assume it’s because another story about that ending is next….or maybe it was just odd.
I believe this is my first D.L. Wood book but won’t be my last. If I do read the next book to see what that odd ending might have meant, it won’t be for months. Oddly I need time to recover from the nerves associated with suspense. 😊
On a side note… The narrator was pretty good, although not very smooth, often halting in her reading as if a comma was placed at every pause, which wasn’t the case.
This is one of the most suspenseful, edge of your seat books that I have read in a long time. What I loved was that it was all realistic for me, everything was surprising, I didn't see the writing on the wall so to speak. It had adventure, suspense, romance all the fun things that I love. Oh a lot of it was located on an island, so it was fun reading about a tropical island I had not heard of before. I really recommend this new up and coming author as I believe this is her first book and I won't be missing any of her others!
Unintended Target drew me straight in. After Chloe's brother ms death, she finds herself in danger as some bad men want something that her brother gave her. Not only is in danger but also is Jack, the man she recently met. Together they must uncover the truth and figure out what Chloe's brother was to tell her while trying to stay alive. The storyline was well-crafted with twists and turns, suspense, and danger.
D. L. Wood in her new book “Unintended Target” Book One in the Unintended series published by The Author takes us into the life of Chloe McConnaughey.

Let me start out by stating that this is D. J. Wood’s best book to date and this is only her first book. “Unintended Target” is super exciting! Ms. Wood has provided us everything: Suspense, excitement, mystery, thrills, betrayal, lots of questions and life in danger. Just when you think you have some sort of idea of what is going on you find out you were so wrong. Up until I read this book I had no idea of where St. Gideon was or even if there is a St. Gideon. There are people who want to kill her so Chloe is on the run from St. Gideon all the way to Miami and she, and you, have no idea of why except to stay alive. I recommend you go to the bathroom, turn off your phone, make yourself some Sweet Tea and a lot of popcorn, you are not going to want to be interrupted while you are reading this book. Chloe and Jack are fascinating characters that seem very real. “Unintended Target” is loaded with twists and turns and red herrings that will leave you guessing all the while you are flipping pages to find out what happens next. Mr. Wood has provided us with a fairly exciting book. I am so looking forward to the next book in this series!

Unintended Target was one tense moment after another. It was hard to put down but oh, so easy to pick back up.
I thoroughly enjoyed this first novel book from D.L. Wood's Unintended Series. I found this suspense to be a polished story with real characters in an intense situation. Honestly, I had no clue what would be coming next for the characters in this book and that is the way I like my suspense to be.
As for the characters, this is a cast filled with great personality. From the "good guys" to the villains, there is a character with about every personality type. Jack is the man's man, there's a nosy neighbor, crooked cop, and so many more. Every new person was distinctive and such fun to get to know and see how their role would impact the path the story was going on.
Another amazing aspect of this book, is the simple, straightforward, but subtle comments of God's truths and the message of salvation. As I mentioned before, these are real characters with their own vices and struggles. But their faith, or lack of, shape who they are. Their are natural conversations concerning salvation, and that is something I certainly appreciate in a novel.
For this particular reader, I'm excited to see where this story picks up and continues to go in Wood's second novel of this series. This was a fantastic read and one that I would highly reccommend to those of you who enjoy being on edge as you read.

After her twin brother died in a traffic accident, photojournalist Chloe McConnaughey travels to a Caribbean Island to escape. Shortly after her arrival, she meets Jack, who had also escaped from Manhattan. Chloe's past relationships with men have left her distrustful, but charming Jack soon wins her over - all in the name of friendship.
Was their meeting coincidental, or is Jack hiding something? When a series of events occurs that leaves Jack and Chloe framed for murder, they need to leave the island. But even trusting the police is out of the question. Chloe soon learns her deceased brother was involved in embezzling large sums of money. The person he stole from will stop at nothing to recover his funds.
Chloe's life has been filled with disappointment. The abandonment by her father, her mother's alcoholism, and her brother's death have left her not trusting God and believing if He loved her, He wouldn't have allowed so many bad things to happen. Although the references are initially subtle, it's clear Jack is a believer who encourages Chloe to seek the Truth.
The book is fast-paced. And the surprise twist at the end... Well, I don't want to give anything away. I later learned this was D L Wood's debut novel, and she did a superb job. If you like Christian suspense that will keep you turning the pages, you'll enjoy this one.
5 STAR REVIEW By Cheryl E. Rodriguez for Readers’ Favorite.com:
D.L. Wood writes an impressive first book in Unintended Target. The narrative is creative, full of action and adventure. Wood is a vivid illustrator, giving great attention to detail, penning vibrant location descriptions. She made me want to take a trip to St. Gideon. The characterization is enticing. Although written in third person, the narrative unfolds through Chloe’s (the protagonist's) perspective, her thoughts and emotions are revealed, allowing the reader to feel her disappointments, fear, pain and excitement. The heroine’s sidekick, Jack, is virile, mysterious, and has many veiled strengths which create a teetering balance between the two. The plot is filled with twists and turns, the expected and unexpected, adding excitement and flair to the fast paced action. Wood keeps the chapters short, and keeps the reader engaged with suspenseful chapter endings. This book is hard to put down. As a piece of Christian fiction, Unintended Target is not preachy or overly religious. It is, however, inviting and compelling, proving the best relationship we can have in life is the relationship with Jesus Christ. (https://readersfavorite.com/book-revi...)

This is mostly personal convictions, but I couldn't finish this one. It got close to the line several times--Christian characters smoking and drinking for no apparent reason, getting a bit closer to the moment of a murder than I was comfortable with, an unmarried couple staying in a single hotel room (I gave them a pass since they were running for their lives and didn't sleep in the same bed). And then in a later scene, they did sleep on the same bed. There was no intimacy, no sensual details, and yes, they were crammed into a tiny cabin while running for their lives, but that's a line that I just can't cross.
I will say the author did a great job of ramping up the tension without giving away exactly what was going on--or sometimes even who was who. There was some excellent banter as well, and I really would have liked to know how the story ended. Other people may not have a problem with the part that killed it for me, but I had to put it down.
With this book, author D.L. Wood just jumped from "previously unknown author" to my "I'll read anything / everything she writes" list. (That is an extremely rare occurrence.) Christian mystery / suspense, with a little romance added, is my favorite genre.

4.4 -- This was interesting from the start and had a lot of suspense. It was a great first book from an author. I look forward to reading more of this author's work in the future.
Unintended Target is an adventure and a mystery with a hint of romance.
Chloe and her brother Tate pretty much had to face the world alone. He had dreams of wealth and mad programming skills, which got him killed. He siphoned money from an investment company that also laundered money. In short, he stole from the wrong kind of people. Chloe had concerns about Tate, but had no clue what he had done or what he had gotten them both into. And, that is what keeps the mystery and adventure moving forward.
Enter Jack. Everything a woman could want in a man. Almost too much so. I'll not spoil it for you though. But, if you've read many books in this genre, you can probably name the three or four key characteristics for Jack's person and role in the story.
Given that it is a work of Christian fiction, there are spiritual themes. Jack is a Christian, though nothing in his character seems to overtly point to that. Just his conversations about spiritual matters, an occasional prayer for help, and the fact that he's not pressuring Chloe for romantic involvement. But, there's so much more that could be written into a Christian character.
One observation, if Chloe represents the female thought process where men are concerned, it is no wonder men don't understand women. And, given that the author is female, she may represent this better than male authors do. So, who knows?
Overall, I liked the book. I didn't find it to be exceptional, but a good representation of the genre. I didn't really encounter any surprises in the plot - the story is straight forward. If you like adventure/mystery/romance/Christian fiction, you should like this book. Give it a try! Enjoy!
Superbly written suspense novel with believable characters
I've read lots of books in my time. Both mainstream and Christian. And I know a good book when I read it. Unintended Target by D.L. Wood is a good book. As in REALLY good. For one, the characters come off true to life—both the good guys and the thugs. And fortunately, the good guys are likable, and the thugs are mostly authentic. That makes the story flow nicely while keeping things real.
The story centers around a woman named Chloe and a mysterious nice guy named Jack. Chloe tries to escape the drudgery of life with an extended visit to some fictionalized Caribbean Island. That's where she meets Jack. Seemingly a gentleman, but somehow deadly. Chloe ends up in a struggle with high-level thugs, due to some shady dealings by her brother. And Jack is there to help. Or is he? It's a great story with lots of tension, suspense, and a satisfying conclusion.
And though this book is labeled as a Christian novel, it pretty much reads like any good suspense novel. Just without the foul language and anything steamy. Sure, there are a few times where faith is discussed briefly within the story. But that doesn't hinder the story in any way. Nor does it reduce the level of tension. The author does a great job of keeping things real. Bad things happen. Some people get killed. In some ways, the writing style is similar to Dean Koontz. But it's not like D.L. Wood is copying anyone. She knows how to write. Anyway, I enjoyed this book very much and look forward to the next one.
Unintended Target is the first book of the Unintended series by D. l. Wood.
This was a thrilling ride for Chloe McConnaughey. Her chance meeting with Jack Collings pits them together against some really bad guys. Chloe is trying to come to terms with her twin brother Tate’s death. He was tragically killed just as he was about to tell her something very important. But Tate has put her in danger, A real page turner— most of it was well plotted. I balked at Chloe and Ruby being too trusting. But it did move the story along. I also wasn’t clear on some of Jack’s friend connections. One of the best sequences was the rescue of Chloe from the mansion on Star Island by Jack and Riley. It was exciting and all the pieces fell into place. Quite a twist at the end! Lots more fodder for the next episode. This was not only a suspenseful book but it addresses the spiritual conditions of Jack and Chloe. The theme that resonated was The Prodigal Son. Jack is a new Christian and he tries to talk to Chloe about Christ and trusting in God. The author did not just weave the Gospel message into the story. I appreciated her afterward where she plainly spelled out the way if Salvation and challenged readers to examine their own spiritual condition. I’m excited to read the next in this series.
*I purchased this ebook from Amazon. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*
I was searching for a clean, suspenseful, well-written mystery. Boy did I find it in this book! I loved it! Be forewarned, though. Many scenes are action-packed, and if you normally have trouble falling asleep? You might not want to pick up this book before you go to bed. Some nights I was up til 1:00-2:00 in the morning just because I had to read what happened next.
There are so many creative twists and turns in this story there is no way to figure out what’s around the corner. It’s an unpredictable, adventurous tale that’s totally believable. I might have to catch my breath before I plunge into book #2 of the series.
The author also weaves God throughout the story without being preachy or portraying characters that are artificially super-spiritual. They could be real people: one who’s faith is strong and real, but relatable; the other who doesn’t believe in God, initially. However, she starts to listen to the “God-thing” more attentively as she experiences her co-protagonist’s answers to prayer in back-against-the-wall circumstances where there is no foreseeable way out.
Also, I appreciated the “If you are looking for hope…” epilogue at the end of the book—words that offer encouragement in the Truth and are not fiction.
Great job, D.L. Wood. You delivered a well-written, clean story that kept me on the edge of my seat all the way to the end. Well done! And thank you!
If you need a fast-paced, adrenaline-filled suspense novel to rev up your reading time, then Unintended Target is for you! Author D. L. Wood puts her characters through the wringer as they dodge bullets and evade hitmen as they try to figure out just what is going on. I loved that along with main characters Chloe and Jack, I was kept on my toes. I never knew who to trust — the twists just keep coming. Chloe’s twin brother had high hopes of scoring a big deal to give him and Chloe the lives he dreamed of. Unfortunately, the scheme turned into a BIG nightmare for Chloe. I really felt for her. Betrayal seems to dog her heels, and saying she has trust issues is an understatement. But Jack gives her reason to hope that the God he believes can be depended on in all situations really exists. And remember those twists, they show up to the very end. 😉 Chloe and Jack have two more books in the Unintended series. I cannot wait to dig in.
You have it all in Unintended Target — characters with great chemistry, a mystery/suspense to keep you guessing, and a genuine faith message. You’ve go to read this one!

Another Amazing Book! Please don’t stop writing, D.L. Wood!!
Wow! The depth of this story. Especially compared the shorter Deadly Decisions Collection I’d recently read by the author, this book was quite a bit longer and kept on winding along. In a great way though. I admit it took maybe 15% of the way to pick up, but I was enchanted by the love interest portion of the story (is he good?? or in on it??). I appreciated how much character development this book had between the two main characters. I was invested in how things turned out! Knowing D.L. Wood’s writing, I happily kept reading and waiting for the delightful twists she always includes too. As I finished, I thought that this may be one of my favorites, but who am I kidding? I really am not sure I can even choose favorites. I love them all. She is my favorite author and I’m so happy I’ve discovered her. I enjoy her writing so much. I can’t wait to start the next book that includes some of the same characters!! :D
