In the ancient Persian town of Saveh, three astronomers discover a star that fills the sky with a fiery light. Intrigued, they search through their scrolls and learn that the star heralds the birth of a remarkable baby. They set off to honor the child with precious gifts of gold, incense, and myrrh. The child accepts the gifts and in return gives them a small stone. The men are puzzled by the seemingly worthless gift, until it reveals its power in a most unexpected manner. This lyrical retelling of the ancient legend of the Magi, based on Persian versions told to Marco Polo, is perfectly complemented by Jude Daly?s exquisite illustrations.
I found this book on my extra reading resource list through the curriculum I am using called My Father’s World. This was extra reading this week as we are studying Persia (Iran). I thought this was a great picture book to add to this weeks reading especially for younger students but also works well for older students. I read this to my 4th and 6th grade boys.
The summary in My Father’s World describes it perfectly:
“This book is a retelling of the story told to Marco Polo about the Magi of Saveh, three wise men from a town in Persia who follow a star and find a special child.”
Very colorful and detailed pictures, enjoyed looking at the expressions of the people. Wonderful version of the Persian Legend. The first page gives some history about the story.
