an alternate cover edition can be found here

1380 A.D. - The great-grandson of the legendary William de Wolfe is not as his family had hoped; although a man of legendary skill and strength, like his great-grandfather, Gates de Wolfe is something of a legendary rake as well. A man with an eye for women, he has left a string of broken hearts all across England and rumors of at least two bastards, possibly more. But Gates is also a man of humor, charm, and great charisma, making it difficult for women to resist him and making it even more difficult for men to despise him because he is such a likable character. Moreover, in battle, he is a destroyer - a knight without equal. He is a man to be feared.

Lady Kathalin de Lara is part of the mighty House of de Lara, great marcher lords. A young lady who has been educated in a convent, she is rather naive in the ways of men. When Gates meets Kathalin, he treats her with surprising respect. She is different from other women he has known and because he greatly respects the woman's uncle, a close friend, Gates makes no attempt at another conquest. He treats her with great regard. But in that regard, and in declaring she is out of bounds for his usual conquering ways, a seed of attraction for her sprouts. Gates, unexpectedly, begins to have real feelings for the lovely Lady Kathalin.

But his reputation as a rake works against him. No decent family, including the House of de Lara, will permit him to seriously court one of their daughters, and Kathalin's family denies his suit. For a spoiled, cavalier man who has always gotten what he wanted, Gates must face the reality that he must actually fight for what he wants and fight for a love he never knew he could feel.

Join Kathalin and Gates on an impossible adventure of life, love, discovery, and devotion that only angels dare to dream of.

DNF @ 60%

Unfortunately this story simply isn't for me. There are two scenes in this book between the hero and other women that I can't get past. Ick. The way he views women is horrible, and I'm supposed to believe he suddenly sees himself and women differently because he meets a young, innocent woman raised in a convent? I've read my fair share of reformed rake stories, but in most of them the hero has a valid reason why he has behaved so in the past and the men generally love women. Gates doesn't have any good reasons for being the way he is other than he is ridiculously self-centered and selfish. Being a second son and having to live up to a 'reputation' of a family that is revered is NOT an excuse for how he has lived the first 29 years of his life. Ick.

I'm throwing in the towel at 60% because I cannot read another word without losing my mind. Seriously. If I haven't warmed up to the hero by now, it isn't happening. And if I'm rolling my eyes and screaming "oh, please that is ridiculous" out loud to myself, well, that's when it's time to throw in the towel.

That being said, this book has a lot of high ratings so might want to give it a try for yourself.

Well for a first read from this author it was a doozie!! Loved it! I enjoyed seeing the story of Gates and Kathalin unfold. The other thing I enjoyed was that while this is a romance the author didn't need to use all the raunchy and trash talk I've read by others. Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Don't get me wrong, I like a good sex scene as well as the next person but some are just written so raunchy it makes me cringe. I loved Kathryn's writing style and just about everything else in this book. It's the beginning of a beautiful reading relationship I think. Looking forward to the next

WOW! What an intense, emotional read. This amazing book was totally character driven. And, you couldn't find two more different characters and personalities if you tried.

Gates de Wolfe, great grandson of the most legendary and powerful knight England has ever seen, Sir William de Wolfe, follows in his great grandfather's footsteps in his feats on the battlefield, but falls very short in his dealings with women. Gates takes the "love them and leave them" attitude to new heights. He is selfish to the core, doing and saying anything in his conquest of the next woman. Gates has charm and charisma in abundance which aids his cause. Between his fierceness on the battlefield, as well as his determination and success in slaying hearts, he is aptly named "Dark Destroyer."

Lady Kathalin de Lara is not slouch in the ancestry department. She hails from the great de Laras, who for generations were the marcher lords of England. Lady Kathalin, however, was sent to a convent at a very early age by her unfeeling parents and cloistered from the world. To say that she has been sheltered would be an understatement. Yet, she is sweet, gentle, kind, trained in the healing arts and, obviously, extremely naive. Lady Kathalin is just as beautiful on the inside as she is in her physical appearance. She also has no intention of ever leaving the convent where she is happy and wishes to take her final vows. That, however, is not to be.

When these two meet, there are fireworks! Oh, no. Not the "stars in their eyes," kind of fireworks. Just the opposite. Gates sees her opposition to leaving the convent when he has been tasked with removing her and bringing her home as an annoyance and he will do, and does, whatever it takes to complete his mission. Lady Kathalin sees Gates as a heavy handed ogre who she comes to hate with a passion. Slowly, but surely, each start to change their feelings towards one another as they interact and learn about with each other.

This book swept me up in an emotional roller coaster ride of epic proportions. There are so many obstacles facing Gates and Lady Kathalin. The dialogue between the two main characters was so heartwarming and, at times, tear jerking. Both of their internal struggles as they dealt with their increasing awareness and feelings towards one another was so beautifully written. Kathryn Le Veque strayed from using complex power struggles within and between countries with intricate battle scenes in this book. However, it was no less powerful and gripping. There were many more interactions between the two main characters and we were privy to their pain and doubts as they struggled with their emotions and feelings. A real page turner that kept me on the edge of my seat. This story will stay with me for a while, as will the emotions it elicited.

With this book, Kathryn Le Veque proves she is a master in the medieval historical romance genre. Plain and simple, there just isn't anyone better.

I hope there is a book in the future with Alexander de Lohr! I loved him! :)

Story was ok. However, I do not care for Gates Dewolfe. How he treats women was terrible with the exception of Kathalin the heroine. It is totally inexcusable. Who knows what will happen in the future. What if Kathalin loses her looks? Or she has given birth to children with health problems? And Gates fall out of love with her? Will he treat Kathalin as the other women? Half a star is removed for this.

Dark Destroyer is a story I was really excited to read, and I have to say that this author never ceases to make me fall in love with her characters. This story features the descendants of the de Wolf clan and the other families connected as well. At first I wasn't sure if I would like this book to be honest, it did start out a bit slow but that could have been the narrator, I am not sure. However once I really started to listen to this book, I became so hooked.

Our heroine, Lady Kathalin, was sent away by her parents when she was just a child to the convent and hasn't heard anything from them since. Gates de Wolfe, has been working as the lead knight for the de Lara family for years, and has led many battles to victory. His liege sends him on a mission to bring back his daughter home upon his wife's request. Kathalin has been raised in the convent and wants to commit fully to the church, its been the only home she has ever known. So when she is forced to leave she is NOT thrilled about the prospect of returning to her family who hasn't shown any love or affection at all in her life. Even though at first she hates Gates de Wolfe, she begins to understand his loyalty to her father and there is something more she sees in him. Gates is quite a rake, with a few bastards he has left behind. He doesn't want to ever be forced into a marriage and he hasn't truly cared about the consequences. But when he meets Kathalin, he meets a woman that he wants more than a simply night in bed. He sees a woman who is kind and generous and has a healing art. She is passionate and true to herself and he realizes he has never admired anyone as much as he admires his lady Kathalin. But her parents have different plans for her. Right when Kathalin and Gates realize their deep love for each other, they assume her parents will be supportive of the match but it turns out to be wrong. Because Kathalin's parents wish to tie her to a different man so they can have a certain alliance with a certain family. Now their love is forbidden and Gates will have to make a difficult choice: the woman he loves or to choose honor and duty and to protect all three families involved.

This story was such a emotional rollercoaster for me, oh my goodness, I was so swept up in their romance and seeing them find their HEA was torment because you see how much that they love each other, and that everyone around them could care less if they are happy including the third man "Alexander" , Gates best friend and the man that Kathalin's parents want her to marry. We see some truths revealed about Kathalin's parents and the motivation behind them seeking such a marriage. But I would like to add how wonderful this story was and that there is HEA, but its hard fought and guaranteed to bring a tear or two to your eyes, seeing them find happiness after such conflict in thinking they would never see each other again.

I found this to be a splendid romance and another treasure from this author that I am in love with and highly recommend. I LOVE her writing style and she just makes medieval era so appealing and full of life.

The Rogue You Will love to Hate

Another exceptional story by this author. Her stories are so rich and well rounded. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. It was really a nice flowing read with strong characters. I personally feel such a buy-in to her characters that it automatically has me flipping pages and piques my interest in wanting to know what is going to happen next. Love the feeling of not wanting to put a good story down.

Gates de Wolfe is truly a Dark Destroyer not only on the battlefield, but a Dark Destroyer of women's hearts. He is the ultimate English Knight Rogue who you want to see have his comeuppance. Truly, the English Rogue you will love to hate! He is handsome and knows it. He can have any woman he wants and all he has to do is turn on the de Wolfe charm and women do what he wants. He has lost count of how many there have been. He is a lusty knight who loves them and leaves them...until he meets his match and fate decides to come calling. Fate is about to hit him.

Kathalin de Lohr is a ward of an Abbey, where she has lived for the past 15 years. Even though she is a sheltered young woman there is fire in her and a stubborn streak. She is being summoned home...to parents who have clearly never wanted to be in her life until now, when she wishes to become a nun. But all hell is about to break loose.

Again, this is a great story. I look forward to this author's next story!

This was one of the most powerful, emotional and riveting stories I have read in a long time. LeVeque has out done herself on this epic journey of self discovery for both of her characters Gates and Kathalin. We meet Kathalin de Lara a sequestered daughter of an earl and Gates de Wolf the powerful knight of De Wolfe family. Kathalin committed to a nunnery who whole life is requested back to a home she has never known. Gates is a womanizer of epic proportions with his honor only coming from battles. The story captivates you as you delve into their journeys of their heart, mind and soul. I cannot truly do the story justice, but the dialogue was incredible the tension and emotion were palatable right off the page. These characters were so well written and developed you could believe with 100% that they were real. I always enjoy Kathryn's books, but this story really showed her strength and a growth of her writing. This story honestly moved me beyond words and I wish I could do it more justice. 10+

I Love Kathryn LeVeque Books!

I've enjoyed every LeVeque book I've read. This book was very good. I seem to get heavily into the people, the time and the story. I finished this book but not as fast as I wanted because I had to stop and wipe my eyes three times. I hope you'll enjoy it too. Happy Reading!

AUDIOBOOK REVIEW:

This listen touched the soul.  So much love, pure and innocent and with such heartfelt intensity and depth, it seared my own.

Le Veque doesn’t use a boiler-plate template for all her stories.  When you’ve read one, you haven’t read any of them, except the ones you’ve read.

Lady Kathalin hasn’t had much in her life.  Not mother or father or brother.  She has spent her life at the abbey, serving the sick and attending the herb garden.  But even the abbey is not safe from men of ill-intent. Luckily, Sir Knight Gates had come to the abbey to collect her for her parents, who’ve sent for her, at the same time an Irish group of men were intent on destruction. Even after saving her life that day, Kathalin is quite insistent not to return with him.  She doesn’t know her parents, she knows the abbey, her sisters-in-God, and lashes out at Gates who eventually trusses her up and puts her on his horse to return her home, her family the House of de Lara.

Gates is a de Wolfe. If you’ve read any of Le Veque’s books, you’ve probably either heard of how great the House of de Wolfe is or have experienced in this series, de Wolfe Pack. Unfortunately, he doesn’t live up to the name of his House.  Although, he is mighty on the battlefield with a close bond to his fellow warriors, he isn’t exemplar in this actions with women.  Frankly, he beds them, and leaves them with or without child. Not so likeable…

Something changes in Gates when he meets Lady Kathalin. She first intrigues him, then interests him. He hasn’t met such a woman before. His feelings for her are different, softer, molding him to a new man.  Others don’t see it, won’t forget his norm with women.  But Lady Kathalin sees goodness in the man.  Yes, he’s charming, handsome as the devil, but he has so many redeeming qualities, she can’t help but fall in love.

Gates’s liege, Jasper de Lara, Lady Kathalin’s father, cares not what Gates feels about his daughter or for her.  He’s determined to marry her to the House of de  Lohrs, a young knight and best friend to Gates, Sir Alexander de Lohr.  I rather disliked Jasper de Lara.  He’s weak, that is to say, he manipulates people with a bullying stance.  Narrator Edwards helps me dislike him with his excellent portrayal of the type of man he is. On the other hand, I liked Sir Alex a lot.  He is most honorable and hope to see him again in another of Le Veque’s stories. Unfortunately, he is placed in a terribly awkward situation.  What is an honorable knight to do?

Another character which sent my emotions in several directions was Lady Rosamunde de Lara, who through time has been hardened by a devastating disease.  Apparently, her heart is well to following her body.

One particular comment to make here.  I enjoyed how Le Veque grew the love people Kathalin and Gates, her delicate handling of Gates’s feelings toward Kathalin, and how Gethyn Edwards takes it to the next level. He also is emotionally charged with the telling.  Very little actually sex in this story and it suit me fine.  Isn’t the journey more important than its destination?

If you love to cry, to touch pure enveloping love, this story is for you.

Handsome, confident Gates de Wolfe, is used to getting his own way, especially when it comes to his greatest weakness, women! One flash of his dimples and that irresistible smile and they are his, but no so, the Lady Kathalin de Lara.
He is unstoppable on the battlefield, earning him the name of Dark Destroyer, but not only does he destroy men on the battlefield, he destroys women's heart too, with his love them and leave them attitude.
He is sent by Jasper de Lara to retrieve his daughter from a convent, where she was placed many years ago and he unexpectedly falls for the beautiful, intelligent, compassionate, lonely and unloved young woman.
But with a reputation of destroying women's hearts and leaving a wake of bastards behind him, Gates begins to learn that he can't always have what he wants, when he wants it....
This is a very moving and emotional love story. It is extremely well written and Kathryn Le Veque has such compassion for these characters, that the storyline pulls at your heart strings in a very tense way. There are wonderful characters in this book, especially the handsome best friend of Gates, Alexander de Lohr and how Kathryn handles this love triangle will leave you turning the pages as quickly as possible.
This book will certainly melt your heart, it did, mine.

History Romance Knights and a Nun?

Okay so Kathaline isn’t a nun yet but expecting an escort home after 14yrs of silence isn’t what she was expecting either. So going home when she wanted permission to take her vows, Kathaline also didn’t expect to find love either. Getting a letter from the convent, Jasper consults his wife and he decreed his best knight Gates to fetch his daughter. Gates is an honorable knight but a dishonorable rogue. Getting the missive to bring his liege’s daughter home regardless the situation, Gates does as he’s bid to do. Not expecting to fall in love. These two find themselves in a conundrum when Gates past surfaces and Kathalin’s parents have other plans for her.

This book made me cry. You follow these two on their journey and even though I wasn’t really cheering for them but the emotion felt from the other is overwhelming and you do find yourself hoping these find the other. You want them to get their HEA. Hence the crying and the sadness felt by all parties involved you want that miracle. So yes very thorough book. The attention to detail was well elaborated and inspired a better understanding of the situation.

💔🐺💖WAY TOO GOOD TO PUT DOWN💔🐺💖

WOW! Not your regular de Wolfe Story from Kathryn Le Veque but just as "AMAZINGLY, HEARTFELT, WONDERFUL, and an EMOTIONALLY CHARGED" as we know her Novel'sto be! At first I didn't really care for Gates, he seemed colder & unfeeling. He really didn't seem to me a "Good Fit" to be a grandson to Scott de Wolfe. As I started to get into the story, I came to find a Man who was vey HONORABLE more on the Battlefield then with Women. Until Kathlin opened note only Gate's EYES but the one thing he did not think he Posses his "HEART!" This novel turned out to be one of my Faviotes in the de Wolfe series! Thanks for a WONDERFUL "TRUE LOVE STORY" Mrs. Le Vegue!
⚡As much as I do not saying I dislike characters by any Author, "I ABSOLUTELY HATED JASPER de LARA!" Also his wife ROSEMOUND de LARA I truly "DISLIKED" at least until the very END ofThe Novel, then she truly REDEEMED her self in my eyes! ⚡

Have mixed sentiments about this one. Gates doesn't seem to have many redeeming qualities at the start of this book, although he is charming, and the comparison to his de Wolfe ancestors/family make a connection with the other books I've read in the de Wolfe Pack series. His meeting with Kathalin puts him on a different path it seems, so maybe love does redeem in the end. Kathalin's upbringing makes her feel unwanted, and the interactions with her father and mother are difficult and painful. But, in the end, all is well. Not much connection to the other books in the series, aside from the family name - but an enjoyable read.

Captured

As all of Kathryn Levesque's books in the De Wolfe Pack series, Dark Destroyer captures your attention and emotions from start to finish. As the others it is hard to put down. Your emotions are pulled in different directions thru out the book. You are laughing out loud and then you read the sentence where Katharin burst into quiet tears and you realize you too are shedding quiet tears.

This book calls attention to several social and personal issues and as always a happy ending.

I like to read books in a series in order although it is not necessary. When I complete each book in this series I can't wait to start the next one.

Not for everyone

I'll start the by saying I love this author's work. I will however say this is my least favorite of her books. The hero is more than just flawed. He is selfish and cruel. I know Kathryn attempted to show growth in his character but in my opinion she missed the mark. I won't provide spoilers but suffice it to say if anyone in your life has ever had and loved a child born out of wedlock this is not the hero for you.
That being said it is well written but lacks the plot development and depth of characters her other novels have.
If this represents the future generation of the much loved de Wolf family I will be deeply disappointed.

Another great de Wolfe pack book

I per ordered this book and it was delivered a loooong time ago. But I never read it I just couldn't find it in me to the description always put me off. But I started it last night thinking I would give it a shot , now I have finished and I am very glad I did. It was different than most of the De Wolfe pack books but I really liked the story it was a good one. I never give away the story with spoilers in my reviews but I have to say that I really really do not like jasper de Lara there is nothing good to say about that man but you will have to read this wonderful book to see what I mean.

Dear Dark Destroyer!

Dark Destroyer, book 12 of Kathryn LeVeque’s De Wolfe Pack series, is absolutely delightful! It is a beautifully written and truly emotional read that I just couldn’t put down. I can’t remember the last time the waterworks ran quite as much as they did while reading this tale. It is true, love makes you rethink past decisions and loving the right person can make you a better person. Gates is such a contradiction, and Kathalin is so fresh and naive, they perfectly complement one another. And Alexander is such a dear and noble friend, I do hope he finds his true love in a future story!

True love and true friendship.

Gates and Kathalin. I didn’t think I would like the book because Gates was such a disrespectful rogue to women in the beginning. But, by the last few chapters, I was crying over forbidden love. Kathalin was raised in a convent and Gates was sent by her father to bring her home however possible. The journey home brought them together but Gates’s past threatened to keep them apart. True friendship, true love and personal growth abound in this book.

Where there is darkness, there must be light!

This book provides way more of the medieval view of the low value of women, used for lust and then discarded. It's difficult to read knowing that women were really treated this way and that men had no remorse for such treatment. But, the dark destroyer of women saw the light and mended his ways. Love prevails. Wonderfully written and true to the time period.

I have submitted this review after listening to the audiobook of this title.

A knight that was known for his prowess on the battlefield as Well as in the bedroom, is brought to his knees, by love. Yes, the bedroom conquests were perhaps his way of trying to find that one and only. It was in a convent kitchen that the woman who was cause him to rethink his moral standards.
An interesting and intriguing tale, which makes one think about their own morals.

Another great story

Dark Destroyer touched my heart so much. What Kathalin went through and was able to finally find true love was so heart warming. Love came in through her mother and have her mother a second chance of some happiness. I have finished all of the Dr Wolfe series and can wait to start on another family. Thank you Kathryn for the way you join all of your families together. It makes you feel like part of a family.

Gates deWolf lover and defouler of women is the central character. In service to a old and weak lord he returns from France to retrieve the daughter sent to a convent long ago. The girl has pledged to be a nun but her parents plan a political marriage to advance their name. She falls in love with Gates but his womanizing reputation prevents the parents from considering him. Another knight is selected for the groom.

Not what I expected!

When I first started reading this book I wasn't sure if it was for me. It took me longer to get into it than others in the series. I held out and was so glad I did. This was quite different than the other books in the series which made it stand out. Characters were different than the other books. No large battles but many twists and turns to keep you interested in their lives.Enjoy!

Gates de Wolfe has come to the Abbey to escort the daughter of his Lord, Jasper de Lara, home after fourteen years. The journey home breaks down the walls of hate a young woman has for the knight who took her and the knight who finds himself in love with a woman he may never have for his wife. An intense love story that kept me anxiously hoping for a miracle.

Excellent!

Oh my goodness! I LOVE Gates de Wolfe! This was one of the best books of the series! I hated to see it end but am anxious to get on to the next book. This story of Gates and his love for Kathelin was gut-wrenching. The part where Gates was begging to be able to marry the woman he loves was so heart breaking I almost found myself in tears. What a wonderful story!

Great Love Story, as Promised!

I enjoyed this love story because it developed slowly and between a very worldly man and a very protected woman. It was intriquging to see this develop. It was also amazing to see the turn around in Rosalind! I would highly recommend this story to everyone.
