Well surely I'll make an edit once I read it all. Hence the stars.

I had it for my university exam in Ancient Greek History I.

I'm Greek myself. Keep that in note.

I dare say that, not being a fan of the topic or been interested in it before, I loved it so far!!!

On the start I read it as an unhappy obligation, but from the Archaic times until the Peloponnesian War--my semester subject ends there--I was left in shock!

I was shocked at how easily victorious leaders such as Miltiades and Themistocles had an unpleasing downfall, and the depiction of society is something really helpful for people to understand the situation.

Also the Alcmeonids were such a mafia!! And the part with Alcebiades and the Sicilian War left me yelling at the book at how stupid and ambitious he was lol.

My favorite part so far was the Persian Wars, and I guess I'd gladly read the book again in my leisure time.

Mr. Lefèvre's writing is very easy yet understandable for someone who was so uninterested on the topic, like me.


He actually made me want to learn more about the Greek antiquity!

Edit: I read it all. The 4 stars still remain--yet someone indeed can understand stuff about Ancient Greece with this book.

Libro dettagliato nel resoconto delle vicende storiche, ricco di riferimenti documentali.
La mia lettura era più indirizzata alle vicende generali della storia della Grecia antica ma, saltando opportunamente le parti più specifiche (note o parentesi), sono riuscita a ricostruire e memorizzare con una certa chiarezza i periodi pre-arcaico, arcaico, classico ed ellenistico che avevo in parte dimenticato.

Forse non era il testo che mi serviva allo scopo ma, con un po' di pazienza e la chiarezza espositiva dell'autore, ho raggiunto l'obiettivo.

Ouvrage érudit et très bien documenté (avec foison de cartes et de croquis). Malheureusement l'auteur nous assomme de connaissances, de noms et de dates, et le découpage en chapitres sur la chronologie des faits puis sur les sociétés hellénistiques est lourd et redondant. Je n'ai pu ni me plonger dans une histoire antique, jamais vraiment rendue vivante, ni prendre un recul suffisant sur cette période exceptionnelle.
