Face it, you meet all kinds of people around a bar, but who could know Izzy would have an encounter with the police? Okay, not THE police, but supernatural police, the good guys in the eternal battle against evil. Alrighty then, as if that wasn’t enough, Izzy also discovers she is not exactly human, either and they want to recruit her. Let the games, the action and the snark begin as Izzy finds herself caught up in a world filled with vampires, angels, demons, fairies and more! And you thought Brad Pitt was hot? Trust me; these beings have looks that are going nova with personalities to match!

Prepare yourself for a daring take on the supernatural, characters that will have you crying, no, not tears of sorrow, but from laughter as these brawny men attempt to charm and disarm Izzy. So why, for the love of all that is rational, does she have the hots for the stodgy and serious half-vampire, half angel, Lucas, the original Mr. Stick-up-his shorts, the king of following the rules and the over-protective brute who will stop at nothing to spoil Izzy’s inner wild child’s fun? Of course, opposites attract and as Izzy works hard to needle Lucas at every chance, she just wants him to notice her. As if anyone could ignore a thorn the size of a fence post in their thumb, Lucas is well aware of the heat that threatens to explode if he gives in to his urges. Get ready to see Izzy’s new world through her eyes, her mind and her priceless inner dialogue as she learns to stand her ground in a world of uber powerful beings.

Don’t get me wrong, there is serious stuff going on here, there is a traitor in their midst, but Brianna West has done a clever job of buffering it with attitude, humor and the sheer brute power of her writing. Awakening is a fabulous addition to the paranormal world. I cannot wait for more from this talented author and her fresh look at things that go bump in the night! Besides, somewhere there is a supernatural war brewing and we may need the Guardians, or at least Izzy's attitude.

I received this review copy from the author, Brianna West in exchange for my honest review.

The story was fast paced and fun to read.
Unfortunately the snarky heroine started grating on my nerves after awhile and the constant push/pull hot/cold of BOTH main characters got real old real fast. Izzy's junior high boy's locker room humor bled over into even serious situations and in my eyes she is just an immature 27 year old woman that is boy crazy, constantly lusting after and imagining having sex with pretty much every man she claps eyes on.
She falls in love with a 700 year old vampire/angel who appears to be one of the most powerful beings in the Guardians. He does his best to train and protect her but she refuses to be protected and demands, manipulates, her way into battles she is just not equipped to handle yet and nearly gets herself and others killed each time. Yes, THAT type of heroine. AGAIN. I really don't know why writers can't write about heroines that actually have common sense and a sense of self preservation. Or at the very least the knowledge that their ineptitude will cause those around her to be hurt.
The next story looks interesting as well with Lucas having to go after his mommy that seems to be in the middle of doing bad things. Hopefully his "wife" will be able to mature a bit. It would be nice to see that our "married" woman doesn't lust after EVERY. SINGLE. MALE.

I was in the mood for a light, fluffy romance and… well… not quite. I really, really, really don’t like gender stereotypes. And I know romance books tends to lean into them pretty heavily, so I was prepared for that. Unfortunately, these were way beyond anything I expected, to the point where some parts felt like we’d been transported back to the 1950s. And I didn’t find the book terribly sex positive either, which was something I was not at all prepared for. I expect romance books to be sex positive since we’re here for the romance. But there were a lot of instances where the main character is defending herself, saying she’s “not a hussie, but…” or describing certain ways of dressing as “hoochie.” I admit, those words aren’t as bad as, say, slut, but they’re in the same ballpark, so I can’t get behind these kind of descriptions since they still demean women. So… yeah, unfortunately, this one was not for me.

It's funny how I have such a huge, eclectic taste in movies that I'm not as accurate with the representation in the books I read. I LOVE science fiction/fantasy movies but don't really read it as a genre. (Person goal challenge to read more in 2017.)

I enjoyed the sassiness of Izzy and the relationship that developed not just between her and Lucas, but some of the other secondary characters. I have my own speculations as to what is happening in the story, who's really lying and manipulating who, but I will wait to see if I'm correct as I continue reading this series. Looking forward to the rest.

I'm excited to read the next installment.

Brianna West was a new author to me so I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. Well it was amazing . I loved Izzy from the start. She is just a girl you was at the wrong place at at wrong or maybe right time . Her meeting with Lucas and Pavel will chance her life and introduce her to the world of supernatural. Learning that she has powerful and many would kill her for that gets her on many adventures. Will she make it, what about her relationship with Lucas ? Who is really after her and will their plans succeed? Read and found out. An incredible book that everyone who loves paranormal would love.

I love a good paranormal book and have read my fair share and then some and Awakening (Promiscus Guardians book 1) is by far one of the best. The plot and storytelling will hook you from the beginning to the very end. All the characters are well written and amazing with such individual personalities that you can't help but fall in love with all the guardians. There is non-stop action, suspense, romance, a few hot & steamy scenes, and some seriously funny comic relief. If you like paranormal books then this is a must read! Looking forward to book 2

A Sizzling Paranormal Romance

Demon portals, vampires, angels, faeries—these are all things that 27-year-old Izzy Harper believes only exist in her beloved paranormal romance novels—they certainly don't exist in her quiet California town. And then one night a chance encounter outside a local bar catapults Izzy out of her quiet, routine life and into a hidden world full of supernatural creatures and incredible magic and power. Izzy discovers that every otherworldly being she ever imagined—and even a few she never dreamed of—are actually real. She also discovers that a war is brewing between the forces of Dark and Light and that she herself is at the center of it. Ushering Izzy into this new world are two Guardians: the dark, mysterious Lucas and the fiery, flirtatious Pavel. Izzy learns that Guardians are beings of mixed Dark and Light descent and that she has the potential to join their ranks. Izzy begins to train with the two Guardians, but her training is soon complicated by her growing feelings for Lucas, and by the attacks that constantly plague the three of them wherever they go. When it becomes obvious that Izzy has even greater potential than anyone realized, it also becomes clear that Izzy is the target of powerful Dark forces that want to use her for their own evil ends. Izzy's life and her very essence are in peril. But despite the danger that surrounds her, what truly scares Izzy is something more profound—she fears to lose Lucas most of all.

In Awakening, author Brianna West has given us a brave, funny heroine. Izzy faces ever-increasing danger with quick wits and her own signature brand of humor. Her story takes us at breakneck pace from California to New York to London, and the reader gets to meet a wide array of colorful characters both good and evil. But the real center of the novel is the relationship between Izzy and Lucas. The two of them have a relationship that is complex and electric, and Izzy gradually begins to understand why he is so guarded and unwilling to trust even those closest to him. Awakening is funny and exciting and full of monster mayhem, but it is also sexy and romantic—a portrait of two souls yearning toward each other. If you love a good, sexy paranormal romance with plenty of adventure, then you have definitely come to the right place.

Tossing spheres, causing waves and soaking up the love… one heck of a debut!

Ok please note… Promiscus and Promiscuous are two different things. Promiscus, Latin for “mixed” refers to the mixed heritage of the Guardians that watch over humanity. Of course, I did the quick look at the word and misread it thinking something totally different, after all, it is a romance. So you might be questioning just who are the Promiscus Guardians? They are the children of mixed paranormal birthrights who fight under the guidance of an angel counsel in order to preserve the light. They vanquish the dark, sometimes from within their own midst.

That was enough to suck me in. Add in a brooding Angel-Vampire and the vortex just got much more powerful. Lucas is seven-hundred years old and has every reason to disdain love. After all, his father made the ultimate sacrifice of an angel and his vampire mother turned around and betrayed him and abandoned her son. Needless to say, trust doesn’t come easy for Lucas. He has his hands full leading the efforts of the guardians. He’s more than earned his reputation as unattainable and untouchable. However, his stoic mien is about to crumble. One seemingly innocent bystander is about to shoot it to smithereens with her sharp wit, sarcasm and irresistible curves.

Izzy just wanted a further gander at the two hotties that left the bar. I mean can you blame the girl? She’s been celibate for a couple years and she’s feeling desperate. Desperate enough to do a little eavesdropping. She certainly didn’t anticipate being slammed against a concrete wall accused of being some sort of spy. Things go from bad to worse when she wakes up in someone else’s bedroom confronted by the two hotties. Lord, they’d kidnapped her. To top that they have got to be totally certifiable. I mean they have to be, right? Light and Dark, paranormal creatures and magic are the stuff her latest romance novels are made of… not reality. Then she’s slammed with an energy ball and her whole life is on a collision course with the unreal. But if there is one thing this ex-librarian is good at, it’s adapting. So you might wonder makes her so very much heroine material. I thought I’d let Lucas tell you…

“I know that this is a selfish notion. How could I possibly think it when the very reason I fell in love with you is your strong sense of self? Your eagerness to lend a helping hand. The way you so optimistically face each day. Even your unrivaled obstinance are incredibly desirable qualities that make me entirely too infatuated.”

Discovering her awakening abilities are unparalleled is nothing compared to discovering that she is a hot commodity in the war between light and dark. Every turn she makes has demons on her tail and now it looks like they might have a traitor in their midst. Which of the numerous hotties could it possibly be? Pavel, the Russian warlock/fey flirt with problems keeping his hands to himself? Adan, the elusive Spanish werewolf/warlock? Gustave or Cecile, the French siblings that definitely know how to kick butt and take names later? Then there is the erstwhile leader, Victor. Someone forgot to tell Izzy that Angels could be so darned hot and sinfully sexual in nature. If that were not enough, he’s the angel that took over raising Lucas when his father was killed and his mother abandoned him… he certainly couldn’t be their traitor. And, they’re in big trouble if he is because Izzy can’t seem to evict him from her mind. Talk about embarrassing… try having uncontrollable random sex thoughts about an angel when he’s privy to everything that crosses your mind… and he’s not even the man she’s fallen head over heels in love with.

Brianna West has an exceptional tale in Awakening. It’s an awesome debut from this author and I cannot wait to read Metamorphoses which releases this week on the 9th. This initial series follows the adventures and romance of Lucas and Izzy. I understand though that it’s quite possible we’ll get the opportunity to see more of her very endearing secondary characters in an offshoot series sometime in the future. I sure hope so. So although you all haven’t seen her name before, I’m telling you… you’re gonna wanna check out the Promiscus Guardians series. It’s not often you see a five-star rating from a debut novel. Awakening is one of them.

This book (as well as several others by West) has been on my tbr list for the longest time! I'm so glad I finally decided to read it, because it was awesome <3

I immediately liked Izzy. I like my heroines with a bit of sass and a hell of a lot of attitude and relatability, and Izzy had all of that and more! She has a great sense of humour (see my chosen quotes) and a fabulous attitude. I loved the energy with which she tackled everything. Her humour and sharp wit are in every paragraph, and made every situation, no matter how dark, a delight to read. We share a lot of opinions, friends (see Izzy on tofu below).

I was prepared to fight to the end despite knowing it wouldn't do me any good - I was clearly outmatched in strength and skill - but I was a woman capable of limitless, hopeless optimism, so I wouldn't go down without a fight. I might do little more than roughen up his brand name clothing, but goddammit, I would do it in earnest!

Izzy wasn't the only highlight. The plot was fast paced with no unnecessary information, and thanks to this it was a quick read. I was always excited to see what would happen next, and the occassional plot twists kept me on my toes.

I usually don't struggle too much to put books down and get on with other things (I'm actually quite disciplined... *awkward cough*), but Awakening made this diffucult. I read every chance I had, and was dying to come back to it when I wasn't.

I didn't blame Lucas for what he was, but that didn't mean I had to like what he ate. It was like being friends with a vegan. Sure we were friends, but don't think I'm about to be okay with your tofu-eating ways. I'm a carnivore, and your tofu is freaking me out. Put that thing away.

The next book (once I've checked it's not on my kindle already) is definitely going to be included in my next book haul. If you're looking for an easy, action-filled read with lots of romance, sexy guys, and plenty of supernatural variety, then this is definitely for you!

DNF @ 31%

The FMC/narrator was so unlikeable that it made the story drag. She’s a pick-me/NLOG/Mary-Sue/self-insert/Chosen One all rolled into one incredibly annoying package. Most of her thoughts seem occupied with how hot the supernatural characters are, who is or isn’t a “hussy” or “hoochie” or W-slur, and her weight, donut-eating, and body-checking. Like all self-inserts, she has chestnut-brown hair and is obsessed with the genre of fiction the author writes (paranormal romance) and I’m proud to announce that she has not one, not two, but THREE eye colors! That’s right, people! Her eyes are described as a “mix of blue and green” with a halo of gold around the center. I’d call that “hazel,” (although the addition of blue makes it sound very inhuman) but maybe that’s too ordinary-sounding for this author.

She’s about 1% interested in the big mystery of the book, what she is and what her powers are, and maybe 5% interested in training those powers, but that doesn’t stop her from annoyingly insisting on taking part in dangerous activities she’s not remotely trained for, only escaping with her life due to plot armor.

On one page, she mentions how she’s not like other girls due to her ratty-looking nails, and on the next page, she mentions that she spent 3 grand of her first paycheck on a pair of “cute” combat boots for the aforementioned missions she shouldn’t be going on. Because that’s sooooo different from a girl who spends 3k on Louboutins, right?

The chemistry between her and the MMC is non-existent. I can tolerate a slow burn, and look past a bit of internalized misogyny on occasion, but coupled with the fact that I just plain don’t like the main character, I just couldn’t go on.

Awakening by Brianna West is the first book in the Promiscus Guardians series. This is the book that introduces you to Izzy and Lucas. I almost don’t need to say anything more then that.

Izzy was raised human. She had no idea she was anything else until the night she decided to eves drop on two handsome hunks in an alley. These two men, Lucas and Pavel end up introducing her to a whole new world and teach her what she really is.

As the story unfolds, so does Izzy and Lucas’s feelings for each other. However the two do nothing but butt heads with one another.

I feel a kinship with Izzy that I’m sure many people who read this book will. She is funny and says what pops in her head without thought. She has a confidence about her, yet on the inside she is a tad bit insecure. But lord did I find myself laughing at her shenanigans frequently.

Lucas on the other hand is rather up tight and stoic most of the time. It’s really hard to tell if he actually has feelings for her or not. I found myself wishing to know the story from his point of view several times throughout the book.

I guess opposites really do attract though because when Izzy and Lucas do manage to admit their attraction to each other, boy do those sparks fly. I’m talking H-O-T! Who new he had it in him?

I loved all the characters that I was introduced to in this book. Even the villains were worthy as they made no excuses for who they were, they just did what they wanted too.

There is so much that I could say about this book but I think I’ll let you figure the rest out for yourself.

Where should I start? If like me you are a fan of supernatural/ paranormal romances, then look no further than this book. There was dangerously, deviant doses of the paranormal, hunks, action, and steamy romance. Did I mention the hunks? Every box was checked!

I loved Izzy as a character. She stayed true to self, and had a stubborn streak which I like in female protagonists. Lucas was a little bit perfect- half angel, half vampire, oldy worldy with dialogue that matched perfectly. There was a refreshing true sense of self in all the characters.

The fast paced narrative fitted the genre perfectly, and kept the pages turning. The ‘will it happen’ story line between Izzy and Lucas was equally frustrating and engaging. Having the main love interest holding back was different, but made for a compelling read.

I’m a lover of action and this book had that a plenty- warring arch-demons, angels, faeries, and many other creations kept the narrative lively and inventive. Teaming that with an easy to read writing style, and vivid descriptions, I am definitely looking forward to book two.

It is easy for this genre of narrative to become cliched and out-dated, but Awakening was ‘unputdownable‘. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, hence the 5/5 rating.

I picked this book after spotting it advertised on social media. It's not your everyday paranormal romance. A young woman, plodding through a meaningless existence, suddenly gets acquainted with supernatural beings. Izzy then discovers that she too is not your average human. She is special. So special in fact, that Dark forces are after her.

An interesting story that would ordinarily have enough going on to keep the reader turning the pages. What makes this book different is how West brings it to life. Forget the plot and the majority of the charters, this is a book about Izzy. In a world of sullen hero's and pouty divas, we are introduced to Izzy. a self deprecating woman, with low self esteem, prone to donut consumption. The book is about how she reacts to being plunged into a crazy world, filled with vampires and demons. She was a joy to be with. Hilarious at times, but also caring and loving too. West brings this character to life with such skill and ease. Maybe there is a small slice of the author in the character. I sincerely hope so. I look forward to reading more stories from this talented writer. Superbly done.

Awakening by Brianna West is amazing! I would rate this at a 4.5 stars. From the first page to the last I was hooked and I couldn't put the book down. I loved the characters, flow and plot twists in the story. The story is fast paced and had me laughing, nervous, and at times wanting to scream. Brianna does a wonderful job of having strong main characters with supporting characters that are just as complex without taking over the story. Izzy is a strong, argumentative, clever and witty woman that is very relatable to most of us. Lucas is a very hot supernatural, dominant, possessive and intelligent man that will have you wishing you could pull him out of the book into real life....Along with Pavel, Victor, Gustave, Adan and Carl. There are just too many to choose from! Cecile and Nattie are the best friends that anyone could hope to have. The chemistry between Izzy and Lucas is smoking hot and will have you seeking relief, so be sure to have your significant other handy. There were definitely some plot twists that I didn't see coming. I can't wait to read the rest of everyone's stories.

I love Izzy and their world! I definitely found myself turning the pages, and I finished this book days ahead of schedule. Definitely a fun read, even for those who aren't romance fans (like myself). The action of the non-romantic sort keeps the reader glued to the pages, as does the back-and-forth chemistry between Izzy and Lucas.

I would love to rate this book higher than three stars, but there were two main points that I couldn't get past:
- There are a lot of editing flaws. I've read another of Brianna's books, and I can certainly see the progress she's made in editing. I would love to see this book cleaned up in this regard, as the story is a lot of fun.
- There were two scenes in the middle of the book that were not cohesive with the rest of the story. That is, jumping from one paragraph to the next, there were inconsistencies. These were not huge, but they definitely were a distraction from the story itself. Again, I'd love to see this cleaned up so the story itself can shine.

I'll start by saying that I was first a bit intimidated by the image on the cover of this book. I expected it to be filled with sexual exploits in rather explicit detail. Okay, granted, it falls very close to that level in some areas, minus the fine tuned explicit details that I tend to skim past when reading some novels so I can get back to the general story line at hand.

That being said, this novel is definitely a must-read. If you are a fan of writing that features paranormal and supernatural beings, in large numbers, and many too hot to handle, then you should definitely check out this book. In this story, a voluptuous heroine meets a lively mix of hybrid hotties that come from a mishmash of supernatural origins, and adventure pursues (along with a few incidents of relatively heated sexy times).

I would recommend this read to any fan of supernatural or paranormal romance, or of vampires, faeries, angels, demons, or any combination of those beings. :)

IZZY IS AMAZING!!

If you have any doubts regarding this book, you need to think again. This book will have you clutching your kindle (or paperback) with a death grip and turning the pages just for a glimpse of the world this author imagined. I wanted to know what will happen next and I wanted to know NOW! I was like an addict searching for it's next fix with this book.

From pink tutu's, to spooning in bed, and even to hot sex between two, if I may say so, soul mates....This story is just one perfect mix of action, love, sass and nerdy. Because I have to admit that Izzy is nerdy and sassy and so damn fun to read about.

I can't wait to meet with Izzy in the next book and to have her bring a smile to my face like she had managed now!

Great job my friend. You have made me a happier person with this book.

I loved this book. Awakening was so not what I was expecting. This is the first novel I’ve read from this author and I was hooked right from the start. While the main characters are the focus of the story, the secondary characters help add life to this novel. The characters are highly developed and the plot was well thought out and very interesting. Brianna West used a lot of description in this well written story. There’s adventure, action, romance, friendship and so much more. Even though this books ends in a cliff hanger, I loved how it ended. Lovers of Paranormal romance should not miss this one. It was a great start to an interesting series.

Angels, vampires and demons oh my! This is the first book I have read by Brianna West and I am in LOVE with this series!!!!

Would you believe in supernatural beings if upon growing up you learned that you aren't even human? You stumble upon different beings, are kidnapped and then learn you are supposed to save the world? This series is full of twists and turns. It is so much fun to read and to try to figure things out

I must admit I originally thought it was just "another paranormal read", but was seriously surprised and shocked to learn how many adventures are encountered! You definitely need to have the others lined up as you aren't going to want to put it down!~

This book was great, one minute you are laughing, next you are nervous then your angry as its such a roller coaster ride to read.
I really like Izzy and how she is a mix of being tough as well as vulnerable, poor Lucas never stands a chance with her, the other characters such as Pavel, Victor and the lovable Cowboy twins are also really great and you really feel like you get to know them.

There are some great twists and turns as well as things you don't expect so hold on tight and enjoy the read!

Finally. I've read 400 paranormal books and it feels like I have a much harder time finding a book that really "sucks" you in these days. This series was so refreshing! I was on the fence because I assumed each book would be about a different character falling in love but I was very happy to be wrong. It's witty, funny, and edgy! Story line is enthralling in all three books...I just wish there was some sort of date for the fourth installment. Can't wait!!! Great read. I read all three in 4 days, with two kids. It was that good!

Sophomoric book that reads like a teenager's first AO3 story.

The author uses the words "hussy" and "pervert" over 30 times in the book! She needs to expand her vocabulary.

Also, I find it very hard to believe in the insta-love relationship between the two MC when the FMC lusts after every male she meets. I found myself literally rolling my eyes at some of the stuff Izzy was thinking in her head when she would kind of zone out.
I don't DNF books as a general rule (so I can give them an honest review when I finally finish them), but I will not be continuing this series.

Four and a half

Great humor, story line, and editing. A little long but well worth the read. The fifteen chapters is a little misleading. Izzy is fun, snarky, sharp and lovable. Lucas is a little harder to get to know. Love the team interaction, makes me feel like I have known them for years. They didn't catch the bad guy so you really want to get the next book to see how it turns out, or not.

I love a good paranormal book and this did not disappoint. It had everything, angels, vampires, and fairies. 27 yr old Izzy Harper is thrown into this new world full of magic and intrigue. As Izzy is immersed into this new world she discovers there is a war between the dark and the light. Izzy is trained by 2 guardians Lucas and Pavel. No spoilers so this is a fantastic magical read with a ton of drama and intrigue. Great 5 star read.

From the very first paragraph I was hooked. Fantasy, Romance, Comedy and a Mystery of sorts as the story pulls us through twists and turns always searching for the outcome. I surely cannot count just one Guardian as my favorite - I love them all; very well developed and they all have their own special personalities. I loved this story and am definitely a fan of this author, I can't wait to read more from her!

Fell in love with the characters!!! Highly suggest you read this book.

This book keeps you enthralled throughout!!! Izzy is snarky and her attitude is the best. Sass and spark!!! Lucas is all man and is definitely held in check by Izzy. The supporting characters just make you fall in love with them all. Brianna West has done an awesome job with this book. Cannot wait to read so much more!!!

DNF at 60% ( with no impunity, hence no rating ).

This is an absolutely the case of " Me, not you ". Please forgive the analogy : I was looking for a solid chocolate cake but found a cream tart underneath a chocolate layer . Now, it is still a dessert, it is still sweet and would be irresistible and totally satisfying to a lot of people, but I know exactly what I want and this book was not it. It is not a bad book, but not me book.
