Lana Harvey’s been through hell and back. As a reaper, it’s all part of the job, but the afterlife has been more turbulent than usual. The Second War of Eternity is underway, and the streets of Limbo City are heavy with the scent of carnage and betrayal. With the recent death of a dear friend, a lover-turned-spy, and temperamental gods breathing down her neck, Lana’s days seem numbered. But Eternity isn’t done with her yet.
USA Today bestselling author Angela Roquet is a delightfully macabre weirdo. She lives in Missouri with her irresistible BFF husband, their sweet, clever son, and a majestic marshmallow of a Great Pyrenees in a house stuffed with books, toys, skulls, owls, and glitter-speckled craft supplies.
Angela is a member of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Association, as well as the Four Horsemen of the Bookocalypse, her epic book critique group, where she’s known as Death. When not swearing at the keyboard, she enjoys playing with her family and reading books that raise eyebrows.
GRAVEYARD SHIFT, the first novel in Angela's Lana Harvey, Reapers Inc. series, and BLOOD VICE, book one in the Blood Vice series, are now available for FREE on Kindle, Nook, Kobo, iBooks, & Google.
Death Wish is the fifth book in the Lana Harvey series and a fantastic edition to the chronicle of Eternity. If you've read books 1-4 and enjoyed them, I think you'll definitely enjoy Book 5.
Less obvious:
I have had the pleasure of seeing Angela's work grow over time and I really enjoyed this latest edition. Her earliest books (starting with the FREE Graveyard Shift) received an A+++ for originality and cleverness, if nothing else. But as I finished the fifth book, I'm beginning to see real writer fangs. That is to say, Roquet has definitely cut her teeth and is producing well-written, quality verse befitting the full-time, professional writer that she is.
The plot is interesting, pacing good, characterizations deep and when I finished I was ready for more. And the fact that Roquet seems to get better with every book, I'm sure Book 6 will be worth the wait.
The worldbuilding wholes are starting to be challenge, but there's nothing like a daring rescue in face of impossible odds, and love triumphing, to bring a book a 5-star review.
By the time I finished reading the first book, Graveyard Shift, I had already purchased and downloaded the remaining 4. Normally, I read a book, and review it, but when they are fun, I tend to read them all one after another, which makes it hard to review each one separately, because they all run together. So I'm reviewing it as one large book ;-)
Our heroine, Lana Harvey, is a Reaper. She was created, and lives, in the Afterlife, and only comes to our world to harvest souls to take back to Eternity.
This is not the Eternity you learned of in Sunday School. If you can't suspend that belief and enjoy another point of view, don't pick up these books. You won't enjoy them. If, however, you can suspend what you learned in Sunday School, and are willing to read a book where the gods of old have their own bits of Afterlife for those who worshipped them, and where those gods get together for social occasions, where the Archangel Gabriel and Beezelbub drink beer and play poker together, well, grab these books and hang on for a terrific ride.
Lana Harvey is a Reaper (oh, I said that, didn't I?). She's not the best of the bunch, and rather likes it where she's at, and has no great ambitions to go up the chain of command. In fact, she doesn't want to. But then Life steps in. Or at least Life as it is in the Afterlife. She finds that when she was created she was given a wee bit extra of something special, and that wee bit extra causes her no end of grief.
Then she falls in love with an overbearing Angel who worships Allah. She finally gets out from under him, only to fall head over heels for Beelzebub, Lord of the Flies, who goes by the name of Bub.
Bub breaks her heart.
Her boss wants to kill her.
War happens.
And Lana is right in the middle of it. Her world is coming apart, literally.
The ending of this book is quite satisfactory, and it is an ending. Oh, another thing I enjoyed was each chapter begins with an epigraph, a quote.
Buy the books. Read the books. Enjoy the books. Review the books!
Man I love this series. Its irreverent and fantastical and borderline silly but it works. I love Lana’s wit and snark and her crew of found family. Bub is my favorite. I hate Grim.
If you’re looking for award winning, thought provoking literature, this isn’t it. If you’re looking for an entertaining action packed paranormal fantasy, you’ll love this series.
The countdown is finally over!!! After the angst and emotional turmoil Angela Roquet put us through with Psychopomp, I was chomping at the bit ready to tear down the gate to get at Death Wish. My psychological state was only slightly eased by the short story in Badass and the Beast: 10 "Tails" about Kickass Heroines and the Beasts Who Love Them (and a lengthy, berating email to Ms. Roquet herself, lol). For those not familiar with the fantastic world of the afterlife and all that Eternity has to offer, you can download the first book in the series, Graveyard Shift for free (coincidentally is also how I got hooked) from most e-publishers and Roquet's website (http://www.angelaroquet.com/).
It seems almost impossible, the number of swords Lana Harvey, Captain of the Posey Squad and Slayer of Rebel Scum, is currently juggling: 1) her former lover has been marked a traitor and only she knows he's a double agent, 2) as Captain of a Reaper Squad she's responsible for others besides the souls she harvests i.e. she has a day job to pay for the condo she shares with her roommates, 3) she has an evening job too! as a teacher in demon defense at the reaper academy, and 4) she's still a reaper with some extra "juice" able to sense original believer souls and seems to have a knack for getting blackmailed at every turn.
Oh, and the world is going to end on Saturday if Lana can't find the Throne soul by then. With everyone watching her, her apprentice fighting his own demons, and actual Armageddon in sight, once I started reading I couldn't stop, I couldn't sleep, hell, I couldn't blink, until the very end. Roquet has created a world and characters I am committed to until the end - the end of the world.
So keep it coming Roquet! I can't wait to see what Lana is up to in "Ghost Market" (May 2016 can't come soon enough)!!
Death Wish, Lana Harvey, Reapers, Inc. Book #5 by Angela Roquet
This is the most current book in this series, and I hope it is not the last. The end of this novel is set so, that if it were the last book in the series, I could feel sad, but satisfied; yet there is still the hope that Lana and company will have many afterlife adventures to come.
I did find two errors in this one, both proofing errors (an incorrect word and the omission of a verb), but still the editing and proofing is well done overall. Lana's tale are always full of action, but this one was a D-ride from beginning to end, as Roquet's excellent plotting and pacing pulls the reader forward, unable to put the book down (note that I read it in under 24 hours). In short, pretty much everything I love about a serial work is here.
In this episode, the war of the afterlife is upon our characters, and it is vicious and bloody. The rebels seem to have an upper hand, and Lana and her cohorts are sore-pressed to keep their wits about them and their heads on their shoulders. The final battle and aftermath have enough twists and turns of fate to please any action junky. The face of Reapers, Inc. changes drastically, and that in itself could generate several possible follow up adventures!
So, if you love fantasy, and kick-ass heroines, give the Lana Harvey Reapers Inc. a try. You'll be glad you did.
Great writing as always. We see a lot of action in this book but luckily it is not the last book in the series and I get to read more of Lana. I'm addicted to her :) If you are a fantasy lover you have to read this series in order. These books can't be read as standalone. On to the next book.
This is the fifth book in the Reapers Inc. series. And I freaking loved it! Seriously, this book was a roller coaster of emotions and one heartache after another. Grief, drug addiction, and the war for the Throne of Eternity made this a great book. There was so much going on in this book with all of the characters and the changing loyalties and things going haywire. It was interesting to see how all of these things fit into the storyline. I also loved that Kevin had a subplot, even if he was a grief stricken mess. He was a hot mess for a while there. But things have a way of getting worse before they even try to get better. The ending of this book was pretty damn interesting and I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book! I’m giving this book a four and a half out of five stars.
I enjoyed this series of books. I believe I originally found the author and the 1st book in the series on an email that I receive but I am not positive. The protagonist in the story is Lana Harvey who is a Reaper -- beings in a celestial world that work for Grim (aka The Grim Reaper) and help him harvest souls. Evidently as humanity's population exploded so too did the amount of souls that needed to be gathered and Grim couldn't do it by himself. ANYWAY Lana occasionally butts head with Grim and lands in hot water.
I found these books clever and funny and I would recommend them to any sci-fi fan.
Well, that was a turn of events! Death Wish picks up from the devastation of Psychopomp and turns it up a notch, sifting through problems old and new.
- I enjoyed the interweaving plot threads and the new settings introduced in this installment, though occasionally the transitions felt a little rushed.
- Kevin. I just wanted to give that boy a hug. I'm hoping life improves for him soon.
- The ending was explosive and creates a massive power shift. It will be interesting to see where Roquet takes the narrative from here.
Fast-paced and action packed. New challenges await Lana and Limbo City in Ghost Market.
*SPOILER ALERT* I don't know who is working my nerves more Malik who keeps threatening to tell Grimm everything, Grimm with all of his threats to disseminate Lana, Winston with his fit when he lost the sacred one or Kevin with all of his grief diving off the deep end shooting fire at Lana and stealing from the people who cared about him. Sorry to hear that Bulb is hurt but glad that he has been rescued.
If I were Lana I would put people in their place about holding all these secrets over her head. She just can't seem to catch a break to save her life.
Lana is back. She is Captain of the Posy unit, collecting souls, trying to keep an eye on Kevin and trying to deal with her life. All the while the rebels are still causing trouble in Limbo city and the soul sitting on the Throne of Eternity has vanished. Lana struggles to juggle her duties as a reaper and keeping her multitude of secrets hidden, not to mention figuring out how to be a mentor and trying to find the Lord of the flies. Another book from Angela Roquet full of humour and suspense, I didn't want to put it down.
I got this book as part of the "Found in Limbo" collection which covers the last 4 books in the series. This review has been repeated for the individual books so that whichever route a reader takes, the review can be seen.
A war has broken out which has changed Limbo City. Lana Harvey is having to come to terms with the loss of her dear friend (with some blaming her for the death), a lover who appears to have gone rogue and joined the opposing forces. Her life is also put on the line by the Afterlife Council.
This is another great story in the "Reapers Inc" series
This is the fifth book of seven, Josie is dead, even though Lana doesn't really seem to care that much. Kevin has gone off the rails and Lana is too busy pining after Beezlebub to even care, so he gets hooked on drugs and she continues to run her unit and reap souls with little care. She acts mostly on her own but she and Jenni become more friendly and poor Saul the hellhound is left to its own devices for most of the book, except when Lana pops by. It's a captivating story and I want to read what happens next now that Grim is unmasked and Naledi is on the throne openly.
I really like this series and I am so glad I stumbled on it. I would definitely recommend that you read the books in order since its an ongoing storyline. I like the character and that it is a new spin on the paranormal genre for me. There is plenty of action, some heartache and romance. Good thing I have the next book in the Series already all lined up.
This book brings many parts of the story together as well as tearing them apart. The characters are so well written that I get lost in the story. Looking forward to cracking open the next book.
I love the intensity and the frivolity that simultaneously make the Lana Harvey books so enjoyable. Great characters, great descriptions of locales and overall amazing world created by the author.
Lana and crew continue to reap whatever comes their way as best fate allows.Conflict intensifies in ways great and small resulting in reveling insights.Written much tighter which makes it my favorite so far !
I see a lot of mixed reviews on this book. I was not disappointed I felt it had the same page turning plots as the other 4. I can't put these books down I can't wait to see what Lana and Buns future holds. I'm going to be sad about finishing this series
Fantastic series. Each book is well written, has engaging characters and fast paced action scenes. This book ends the story left incomplete from the previous ones and has a more positive outlook. Loved it. Highly recommend reading this series.
This has been my favorite of the series so far. It's hard to write much without spoilers; however, I can say that, with the exception of Malik, I love the development of the characters over the course of the series.
Love this series... Quirky characters, good character development, humor, love (and lust!), relationships, and other-worldly adventure.( Angels, Demons, and Reapers! Oh my!) Give it a go.
Love conquers all and can be pretty damned bloody during that conquest! As always, Angela Roquet, never fails to offer a rollercoaster of twists and turns!
Kinda wish Mallick would realize that's not how you show someone you care about them and man I just love Bub. He was breaking my heart there for a bit.
