Adam Locke’s youthful looks aren’t the blessing everyone seems to think. At twenty-eight, he’s a successful photographer with his own studio and respected by his peers—but that doesn’t seem to matter to the men who catch his eye. Instead, he’s brushed aside like an underage twink with a daddy fetish.
When a hot, bearded stranger stops him from accidentally walking into traffic, Adam looks up and finds the man of his dreams. Unfortunately, his first meeting with Brandon ends with him being dismissed as a kid. Again. Adam can’t help his annoyance. He also can’t help staring (and drooling) whenever he spots Brandon walking through the neighborhood with a different dog.
He watches from afar, wondering about Brandon’s story—until the day he’s dared to take another chance. It’s just the push Adam needs, and finally, he catches Brandon’s interest. Now if only he could figure out the key to getting taciturn Brandon to open up and let Adam in. But Adam knows sometimes all it takes is a little patience for the last piece to click into place.
Jayden Brooks is a pretty cool chick. Just ask her friends. She's a woman of great mystery and suspense, but she can't tell a lie without confessing. She's fond of gingers, tea, and tales of hot men falling in love with each other—not necessarily in that order. She lives in the suburbs of Chicago with her family, a golden retriever who goes by the name of Mickey, and a cat who wandered in one day and never left. More than anything, she believes that love is love, and everybody deserves a chance at a happily ever after.
This is a light-hearted story and a nice addition to the Heartsville series. I read this one after reading Piper Vaughn's Bookmarked because I liked Mark's best friend Adam in that book.
Adam is a photographer and a very good one at that. It's not his fault he looks barely old enough to drink.
Brandon, a dog-walker, thinks Adam is just a kid following him round the gayborhood, but Adam is all man and wants to lick Brandon all over.
I loved the opposites attract theme here. Brandon is gruff and standoffish, a man of few words, and Adam is kind of hyper and bubbly. The story is told from Adam's first-person POV, and his brain is an exhausting place to be.
I am decidedly not a fan of interrupted sex in stories; it always makes me think of a bad 80s sitcom. The first time this happened in Clique, I was mildly amused; the second time, not so much. This story needs more *ahem* completion.
The weird jealousy/separation thing also didn't work for me, and I never figured out why Brandon's mom disliked Adam so much.
But the tentative HEA is lovely and sweet. I'm glad Adam found his man (and his dog!).
Adam Locke is a successful photographer and an owner of a studio. He's twenty-eight years old, but he has a hard time passing for an adult. Because of it, guys his age easily overlook him, which really annoys him. One day he gets stopped by a hot man, Brandon, from accidentally stepping into traffic. Unfortunately and unsurprisingly, Brandon dismisses him as a kid.
After their first meeting, Adam can't stop thinking about Brandon. He watches from afar as Brandon walks through the neighborhood with a different dog every day, until he decides to take another chance with the man of his dreams.
I didn't particularly like the whole jealousy spat. But overall, I think it's a sweet, nice read.
Adam is a successful photographer, running his own studio in Heartsville. He’s 28 years old and is looking for a forever kind of love. Awkwardly, he’s been blessed cursed with an extremely youthful appearance, which makes it difficult for him to find guys his age who are interested and who look at him as more than just some “kid.”
Brandon is a dog walker with a past he doesn’t like to talk about. He’s gruff and on the non-verbal side of the communication scale, which is the complete opposite of Adam and his bubbly, rambling nature.
When these two first meet, Brandon reacts like most men do and assumes Adam is some kid who is off limits, completely disregarding him. This niggles at Adam for quite a while, and eventually, with a helpful push in the right direction from his best friend Mark (from Bookmarked), Adam re-approaches Brandon to set the record straight.
The relationship that grows between Adam and Brandon was so enjoyable to follow. They encounter their fair share of awkward moments and are even cock-blocked a time or two in an entertaining fashion, but the sweetness and the feelings that develop between the two were a delight to read. Plus, there be PUPPIES!!
Clique was easily my favourite story of the Heartsville series (keeping in mind, I have yet to read Bloom Box). Everything just worked for me. I absolutely adored Adam; I had so much fun being in his head. I really do have an affinity for main characters that have quite a hyper, rambling personality. I found Adam highly entertaining and laughed out loud on more than one occasion. I also (for the first time in this series) really like the love interest (Brandon). Once again, I really have a thing for gruff, moody bastards, that are possessive (all the “mine, grr” stuff works for me) and secretly have a heart of gold. (Is it just me or have I just described Sterek? Seriously fixated!).
We met Adam in Bookmarked, as Mark's best friend. He is a photographer, looks way younger than he is and has a new obsession: the guy who saved him from walking into traffic.
But Brandon. the gruff and closed off bearded hottie doesn't seem to be all that interested. In fact, he keeps dismissing Adam like he is an underage kid. Until Adam decides to give Brandon a piece of his mind about his ways...
Admittedly, I had some problems with the story. The first POV and the humor didn't work all that well for me. Sex scenes were interrupted twice and the falling out they had towards the end seemed weird. Also, Brandon's mom pissed me off. She was downright offensive to Adam from the beginning and I never understood why.
But, I liked the enemies-to-lovers trope altough it didn't last too long, there is chemistry between them and the steamy scenes are pretty hot. And DOGS, people! So many dogs!
Overall, it was a nice addition to the series.
All books of the Heartsville series work perfectly as standalones and you don't need to read them in a specific order. Recommended for those who are need of a short, sweet, sexy and feel-good read.
Thank you, ladies. I had the best of times in the gayborhood.

Don't hate me if I start to sound like a broken record, but so far all the stories I've read in this series have been easy breezy, feel good romance, and this was no different.
Young at heart and in looks, Adam likes what he sees in Brandon and grabs on with both hands despite Brandon's protests. As these two navigate dating, they encounter several obstacles, frustratingly delaying gratification over and over.
This was a no brainer. Simple but cute, fun, and funny.
Jayden Brooks can really write funny characters and reading Clique made me go check out the rest of her books immediately.
Ok, this was adorable and damn funny. It made me go check out everything else by Jayden Brooks because I just plain had a great time reading this from the first sentence. It’s told from inside Adam’s head and it was a manic whirlwind of hilarious inner monologuing. Brandon is Adam’s match and complete opposite and they just worked. After their meet/cute they had their push and pull as Brandon dismissed Adam but then couldn’t resist the attraction he had for the adorable man. If you love the opposites attract trope than this is the story for you.
My biggest problem was the change in perspective, I guess. The previous three novellas focus in one narrator but using third person POV. This one is in first person POV.
See, I first read about Adam (and intrigued by him) in Piper Vaughn's Bookmarked and somehow reading Adam's thoughts in first person narrative just didn't fit with what I had in my mind about him. I was tired of his thoughts actually, and he no longer appealing for me. I also didn't feel the chemistry needed between him and Brandon.
I did like the dogs. So yeah, just another meh read.
Next on my list was a tale told by an author I hadn't read yet and boy am I sorry I haven't! Jayden Brooks is funny! I loved the banter between Adam and Brandon but I have to say I think Brandon's parents stole the show. I'm definitely checking out more from this author. Jayden Brooks, you're on my radar now!
Yeah, I was less intrigued by Adam and Brandon. I wanted to know more about Brandon, wanted a little more discussion between the two. Adam is a bit caught up in his own head, so things are happening around him, but he is too busy monologuing and reflecting.
***** Heartwarming, romantic M/M short story, by Jaden Brooks !! Lovely ! ***** It's a wonderful short tale of finding the "one" you need.
Adam is always being carded because he looks younger than 28, plus he's lively, snarky, and hyper.
He's a sweetie who owns his own photography business, and is saved from falling in the street by a handsome man walking a dog.
The hunky guy, Brandon, thinks he's a clumsy kid and gives him the brush-off. Next time he sees the man, he's got a different dog. Hmmm. This amazing neighborhood is a welcoming place for LGBT people, and it's fun the live there. These "Heartsville" stories are linked but can stand alone. Interesting characters, fast paced and heartwarming, we get a terrifc plot, hot sex, and when it ends, we want more. Highly recommended, because I just loved Adam, what a gem. ENJOY !!! =========================================================
I really liked Adam and Brandon. In fact, they might be my two favorite out of the couples in Heartsville. Of course, I’m sure part of it is all the adorable dogs that the author worked into the story. 😝
Short and sweet. That sums up Clique perfectly. The story is light and fun just like its characters. Adam is the owner of Clique a photography studio in Heartsville. He loves his job and enjoys living in the gayborhood just as much. What he doesn’t like is everyone assuming that he isn’t of age. At twenty-eight years old he’s certain he will be well into his retirement years by the time he finally stops getting asked to prove his age.
Having only lived in Heartsville for the past year Brandon finds that he keeps bumping into the same guy to the point that he has to ask if he is being followed. Brandon’s job as a dog walker keeps him moving all over town while exercising his furry four legged charges. It’s on their second verbal run in with each other that Brandon gets schooled on assumptions and they begin their fun filled journey.
I purchased all of the Heartsville books when they were first released and on sale. I’m so glad that I did. I’m looking forward to reading some of the other characters that I met here as they get their own happily ever after.
I enjoyed this but it was a little jumpy and disjointed for me - like I was reading every other chapter of a much longer book. I didn't quite get Brandon's parents - why the mum gave Adam a hard time, the dog thing and why the hell they walked into Brandon's house without knocking bugged me to bits! A little more about Brandon would have worked for me too, and I know it's the price you generally pay for Adam's first person POV (which I loved by the way) but it may have helped flesh out my understanding of what made him tick.
There are parts of this novella that are really, really good . It is super funny in several places. I like the characters and the world.
Then there are places that the writer just doesn't follow up so we get a lack of connection which makes the romance less powerful. (Like Brandon's past)
And then there is conflict that is kinda dumb.
I will read more by this writer because the funny and charming parts.
Cute story overall. I really liked Brandon, but something about Adam bugged me from the first page all the way to the end. Kind of sad since I liked him so well in Bookmarked. I did like Adam and Brandon as a couple and the interactions with Brandon's parents made me laugh.
I've enjoyed all the books in the Heartsville series but I think this was my favorite! I thought Adam was simply adorable. Sure he maybe came off as a little whiny there in the beginning but you can't blame the guy- he's 28 years old and gets treated like a kid because he looks young? I feel your pain Adam, I really do. I was so glad that we got the story from his point of view, his inner thoughts were quite entertaining. I'm jealous of his career and love that he was carrying on, and expanding, his aunt's legacy. He is such a sweetheart! Brandon was an interesting character. I can't say I cared for him all that much at first, as he wasn't very likable. But Adam was able to work his charm on him and got him to open up and we were finally able to see the *real* Brandon. The "gayborhood" of Heartsville was such a fun place to visit, I hope one day we'll get a chance to go back there and meet some new residents!
This series of five books was a pure delight to read. I've read (and loved) work by Nico Jaye, Piper Vaughn and JH Knight before, but Jayden Brookes and Cate Ashwood were new to me. I'm going to review the series as a whole, although each book is standalone and could be read that way.
What can I say? I LOVED the gayborhood. It is a series of pure delight. Easy to read, sweet without being sugary and just a teeny tiny bit of angst to add a bit of bite. This series is the pyjamas, slippers, hot chocolate combo of the book world. Pure comfort. The kind that leaves you snug and happy. I adored all of the couples and their stories and would be really hard pressed to choose a favourite!
Milo Hart of Bloom Box had a soft spot in my heart. His generosity of time and spirit warmed me and made me grin.Cate Ashwood is definitely an author I need to check out.
I loved the rocky Horror references in Unscripted, but mostly in this book I adored the brand of smuff (smut+fluff) that Nico Jaye has made her own.
What bibliophile can resist a bookshop setting? Not this one, I love stories set in book shops and a reclusive novelist. PERFECT. Piper Vaughn write romance from the soul and I love it!
Adam and Brandon in Clique, by Jayden Brookes, were adorable. Nearly as adorable as Brandon's dogs...
And JH Knight told a tale of fear and forgiveness that was just beautiful. They were all beautiful. They were exactly the kind of stories you expect them to be when you look at the gorgeous covers.
Lastly I want to say how much I loved the interaction of characters between books. Though each book focused on one couple, there are cameos from the other stories. Though subtly done so that each book can be read completely independently.
A wonderful, happy series. I cannot wait for more from Heartsville. Review previously at bmbr. A copy of this story was given in exchange for an honest review.
There are several things I love about this fourth book in the Heartsville series. The character development is great and leaves us with very memorable inhabitants of Heartsville. We've met some of them before. Adam is Mark's best friend. Remember Mark from Bookmarked? Adam is the owner of a photography and graphic arts shop and is saved from being run over in the street when he's all wooly headed as he starts to cross the street. Brandon, who is walking a dog, grabs Mark and pulls him back onto the sidewalk. A little spark of attraction perks up Mark's attention but it takes Adam to get Mark to pursue Brandon. The story of how Adam's aunt got Adam interested in photography is one of the best uses of a secondary character in a novella ever written! We get to see several other people we've met before, including Milo and Will from the flower shop. Love those guys! Now on to one of the other things I loved about Clique. We meet or hear about guys from other businesses that are not featured in this round of stories. There is a gym called Pumped, a restaurant, and a few other places and people who are barely mentioned but developed just enough for me to want more of their stories! I loved Brandon's family, especially his tough mother. Lulu the dog is a precious addition to the story. Mr. Snuggles and his tiny, sassy owner are adorable. This is a great addition to the Heartsville series and certainly leaves me wanting more!
Yay Adam! We got to know Adam a little bit in the first book, Bookmarked, because he's one of Mark's best friends. (I wish there'd been more Mark in this, but I understand why there probably wasn't.)
I loved getting to know more about Adam, about his studio and the history behind it. I feel like Brandon was still a little bit of a mystery by the end of the book, but there's honestly only so much you can do in 20k, and we knew him well enough. (
I loved all of the puppies through the story. The end was very sweet.
I have to say this one isn't my favorite (Another Shot, Bookmarked, and Bloom Box are, in that order), but it was a good addition to the world, fit right in with the tone and theme, and I'd love to learn more about these guys, so I'd read more if there were ever more.
I'm enjoying how the characters are in the other authors' stories so we get the meet them before their story! This was sweet...my one issue is that I feel like I didn't feel the chemistry between these two characters as much as the other stories in this series. I don't know if it was that it was written in 1st person POV, whereas the others were in 3rd?
This is part of the Heartsville series, currently five novella-length stories set around the fictional town of Heartsville. Each one is written by a different author, and I enjoyed every single one. Sometimes all you want is to sit back and read a quirky, sweet romance with no angst and minimal obstacles. These stories definitely fit the bill.
This was a short quick read. Adam Locke’s youthful looks aren’t the blessing everyone seems to think. At twenty-eight, he’s a successful photographer with his own studio. He wants someone to take him serious. When a hot stranger saves him from walking into traffic he has found his man only he is rejected. His friend convinces him to fight for what he wants. I had a problem with Adam he was too whiny for me complaining about looking young women pay big money to look younger everyday. Brandon is a dog walker he didn't have any interest in him but he didn't give up. This was my first time reading this author. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
“Photography is a tough life: you can be taken, framed, exposed, shot, captured, and hung all in the same day.” ~Author Unknown
As unfair as it is, people judge someone's abilities by how young they look. Adam Locke, of 'Clique' by Jayden Brooks, has worked hard to keep the business his aunt passed down to him successful and, doing so, gained the respect of the good people of Heartsville. Even though Adam is attracted to him, when a handsome stranger, Brandon, is condescending to him, Adam is hurt and insulted. He tries to forget him, but can't seem to get him out of his mind, especially when Brandon seems to appear wherever Adam goes.
Adam is still very angry at Brandon for dismissing him before he even knows Mark. He confides in his best friend, Mark, who owns Bookmarked, Heartsville's book store. Mark is understanding, but tells Adam to give him another chance. Against his better judgement, Adam approaches Brandon, who by now, realizes that Adam is no kid; he's an established member of the community. With this new knowledge, Brandon's reaction to Adam is much more open. Since Adam is the forgiving type, he decides to go with it instead of continuing to make himself miserable and things begin to look up. Brandon has some confessions of his own that explain why he's moved to town and why he's dog walking. Adam and Brandon get into a discussion about why Adam doesn't have a dog, which is apparently a game breaker, especially for Brandon's mom who runs a dog rescue. Adam promises to rethink his “dogless” state.
This a great addition to the Heartsville series. Even though the stories can be read separately, I love that they are linked together by having characters from the other stories in them. Although young and handsome, Adam's wit was a big part of his charm. Reactions like this made me laugh: “My body and brain finally synced up in a chorus of hallelujahs.” The story had lots of light, amusing parts, but it also had a few bittersweet ones, like when Adam talked about his aunt and how much she helped shape his life, it was beautiful and made me cry. Of course, Lulu, the Weimaraner puppy's antics, stole the show. If you like stories with handsome men, best friends, pumpkin ale, dogs, and photography, then you may enjoy 'Clique.' Thanks, Jaden, for an entertaining, feel-good story.
