“Promises are meant to be kept, once its broken no sorry can compensate for it, everything seems go against you.” She is the most cheerful and free spirited girl, suppressed pain under her smile. He is most fascinating, serious and rich man, he escapes from his past and tries to live with its trauma. She is able to break his sufferings by making him fall in love for the second time. A promise is made to be together, until disaster happens. “The promise” is a heart-warming, inspiring, agonizing story of an unmarried pregnant girl (Shambhavi), betrayed by her boy friend (Arjun) and her struggle for existence. It is a must read novel, every chapter starts with a influencing quote that make the novel itself unique. Nikita Singh is an optimistic writer. The ups and downs are tremendously written, right phrases for right situation with astonishing emotion. No one can finish the novel with complete dry eyes.
If you are an Indian romance and melodrama fan then it’s the best book. “Sometimes, it is not so much about the things that we say; as it is about the things we do not. For those who try to listen, silence speaks louder than words”, most notable quote in the book. When sambhavi insists on holding her dead baby but she could not, not because it was too painful but because of her broken arm, was the most heart aching moment.
I seem to have fallen in love with Nikita Singh’s writing. Okay! I'll be honest I've just read 'If It's Not Forever..' that was co-authored by her. A lot of people may criticize her on and oft but I seriously loved the way the two books I've read have been written. If you are a die-hard romantic and a girl as well, do pick the book, you are surely going to love it. Your heart will cry when you will find Shambhavi struggling all the way all alone and have tears while you read Part IV of the book. The trauma of a pregnant unmarried girl abandoned by her boy friend has been well portrayed. I just love every part of the book, nothing unnecessary, just the apt usage of words at the apt situation. The beginning of each chapter gives you a new lesson about life divulging a few realities related to emotions if in case you are unaware about them. This is something that makes me love the book even more. Go ahead and read the book. I am sure you won’t be disappointed.
Ok dear author, you have problems. We get it. I tried this book for some light reading before beginning with GoT again, and also because I've read your books before (not that they were any good either haha). See the story is good but just because you have a good story does not mean that you become a writer does it? You start off the book like an Indian FSoG. I had my doubts on starting this book but the moment the hero says "I want you all to myself" after a business meeting, I was like...this is going way out of proportion. And then you add so much melodrama. Why??
I've given this a lot of thought. It's okay if you give up writing. You don't have to go on and continue writing shit just for the sake of it. Give it a thought, keep down the pen, and do something else. Enjoy your life :)
P.S. Don't be surprised if you get hate emails from a fake account. Just might be me :)
I see that Nikita is on a writing spree which is evident from that fact that she had written seven novels at such a young age. I guess, the quantity of writing doesn't do any good to the quality of the book. My sincere advice to her is to take some time and write some good stuff, instead of piling up book on her name. The story was very ordinary, the narration was boring and the editing was not good enough. The characters were not consistent and the characterization was sloppy. Shambavi's first date with dutta was a classic example of immature writing. Comparing the person whom you are awed with to a shady character with reference to BDSM is one among innumerable instances. For heaven's sake take your time for your next novel. I wish you all the best.
This book is so stupid. It is poorly edited and written as if the writer couldn't care enough about writing an original story not only that, she didn't care enough to proof read it. A story that was copied and inspired from Fifty Shades of Grey. Don't pick it up unless you have nothing else to read and are interested in shady literature.
The best thing which is also unique about the book is that it starts every chapter with a quote, though it lets you know what's the chapter is all about and what's going to happen in it, but still increases curiosity to read it.
The ups and downs are good and logical, the characters are well designed and described, you can visualize each of them, though the lead Shambhavi was a little confusing one as I was unable to view her, but the character which was very well scripted and seemed to be center of story is Arjun or Mr. Datta.
I felt really connected to the male protagonist, is loneliness, his pain, his fear, his fire for earning money and success, his change in attitude after achieving, his pulling away from accepting love, falling on her finally and then the beauties in love he do for her.
And the disaster and its effect on both the protagonists was awesomely described, the struggle of Shambhavi and the punishment of Arjun to himself.
The ending chapter are the best, the pain, the accident, the lose, everything has the capacity to make you emotional and bring tears, and finally the end was though very much certain and predictable but the concept and idea to show the climax was unique and good.
It will touch you for sure, and leave you lost for few minutes in it, and also make you remember your love especially lost love.
As it did to me and also ignited my passion for passion.
Only drawback, it took a long time to start the main story which made it boring and is a risk to make reader lost interest and keep the book aside, it regains once Mr. Datta enters the story.
I guess best individual book by Nikita Singh, expect more.
to begin with i would like to congratulate the author for her phenomenal work in THE PROMISE. there have been times where people ask each other questions like "Did you like a character of a book so much that you want to meet that person in real?" well i am expected to say that i want to meet someone like Arjun, which i actually want to...but to be honest, i want to meet the kid called Shambhavi. there's nothing negative in sense when i quote Shambhavi as a kid, cause i see her as a serene woman who's too innocent yet very strong at heart.
in the beginning of the book, i wondered why Shambhavi is portrayed as an immature adult at places, when she is bearing so much of a burden in her life...but later, as the book progressed, i realised her maturity level increasing, so that realisation makes the book more involving to me.
i appreciate one more thing about the book, that is, the book does not have a typical endings that other books give like a climax in a hospital or airport! it was rather simple but touching. the relationship between a father and the daughter is portrayed beautifully. And although, the sizzling chemistry between Shambhavi and Arjun was quite less and the emotional love was on the higher side, i loved whatever i got.
like any other typical reader, i again wish that Arjun was punished more, a slap or two tight punches for being a !@#$@!$@ (put it as u want). otherwise i thoroughly enjoyed the book.
last but not the least, i expect some good amount of humour content in the writer's next book as you are very much capable of that.
FOR READERS WHO WANT TO READ SOMETHING BEYOND A SIMPLE ROM-COM!!!!
First thing which I want to admit here is that I thing I am having a crush on you. You look really beautiful. Every time when I was about to close your novel my eyes fell on the pic of yours on the last page and I fell in your eyes.
I think I should come back on review now. well the novel seemed interesting with the opening scene of airport where Shambhavi and Mimmi came to say good bye to Milli’s boyfriend. I thought the story would be of Milli, but then Milli and her boyfriend got lost somewhere and Shambhavi’s career came into the picture. it went on and on and on, I got bored. Then came Arjun he too looked bored. Then came the moment from where the novel took a rocket start which was Shambhavi’s pregnancy and after that the story leaped nowhere. A roller coaster ride of emotions were wandering around me. Some of the scene took me so deep into the story that I forgot where I was and I was? For example the scene where Shambhavi told about her pregnancy to her father and other was when Arjun saw Pari in the operation theatre. Those were magic moments. But then the end didn’t fit to the story.
My favourite line in this book is "when she was happy she was immensely happy when she was sad she was immensely sad"...so true for my own self. The character of Shambhavi is so strong and yet to fragile. The importance of loving selflessly and your own self respect is so well portrayed by Nikita the writer. The story is not something different but the way the characters are described the way why one does one thing is what makes the story interesting. The turn of events are surprising and as you read you can actually feel what both Shambhavi and Arjun go through. One of the many beautiful lines in the book is "life doesn't give you many options...one is to trust to try despite ones reservations. The other is to never know what could have been ". This is so true. If you decide to take that plunge you need to be ready for the consequences also that come with it. Life is nothing but an unexpected turn of events changing you as a person just like how Shambhavi grew and her paintings could depict the same. The bonding between Shambhavi and her dad and her friend Mili teaches a lot about conduct of relationships...definitely deserves one read by someone looking for a romantic emotional read.
Let me tell you what I've figured about Nikita Singh's writing so far.
1) She has good concepts. 2) She has a good grasp on the vocabulary needed to write an average/above average story. Some of her expositions (in this book) truly surprised me. HOWEVER, 3) She fails to deliver what she promises (writing-wise). 4) The plots are not laid out properly. 5) The characters are not realistic. 6) The dialogues are too frivolous. 7) The stories seem too Bollywood-y at some points. 8) She tells, doesn't show. 9) There's a lot of info dump in her books.
I wanted to love this book very much, but sadly, I couldn't. Arjun was a big dick (sorry for my choice of word) and I'm not happy the way the book ended. The writing seemed promising at times but disappointed in most times. I wish it was written better.
And, the twists were too far-fetched. I didn't believe most of them. :/
Nitika Singh is a phenomenal author. with this book I am sure that her art of writing will go a long way. Everything was written by full heart . it feels as If you are actually living the characters. thank u Nitika Singh for a really nice book.
Can anyone evoke emotions so beautifully like Nikita Singh? I guess not. I loved this one. Like really loveeeeeeeeedd it! I cried, and I laughed. Truly, a treat to read her books. My favorite writer <3
A Neatly Crafted Love story :) Initially I was like, " Gosh yet another typical love Story " . But after a couple of chapters I became so engrossed in it.
I never thought that a teenager unmarried mother will have to pay a lot for her baby. Nithya had showed the way and feelings of lovers who doesn't think of marriage and the fore coming experience.
"The Promise" centers around Sambhavi, a 23 year Interior Desniger, and is the jolliest girl one would ever meet. Sambhavi is the one who would brighten up anyone's day. Mr. Arjun Datta, completely opposite from Sambhavi, is a rich brat from the same place. Heart broken, frustrated with life, Mr.Datta's only priority in his life is his work and to make money through it. Being poles apart from each other, Mr.Datta and Sambhavi are connected by the same thread of their Love for Art. As they started spending more time together, Sambhavi made him realise the void in his life. They fall for each other, passionately and madly in love. Everything seemed to be perfect, like nothing bad can happen. And that's whendestiny play it's cards. Suddenly, their "promise of being together for ever" started to devitalize. When disaster hits, does their love prove strong enough twithstand the brutal force of reality? Will do try to collect the fragmented pieces of their relationship, or they will give up their Love for the sake of some misunderstanding. Do they keep their promise or does the promise lay forgotten, as they struggle to regain balance of their lives? 👈 My review- The thing that I love about the novel the most is the character of Sambhavi. Unlike girls these days, she isn't someone who will blame fate for the hurdles and coax the guy for leaving her, when she needed him the most. Infact, Sambhavi is mature enough to understand his reasons and tries to lead her life in her own terms. The way Nikita Singh layered one incident with another and presented the book, is incredible.I completely loved reading the book. .
The Promise by Nikita Singh 🌸 Fiction 🌸Romance 🌸₹175 🌸223 pages
Set in Indore, the protagonist Arjun Datta is elusive, charming and filthy rich and Shambhavi Sen is our bubbly ray of sunshine. Arjun has had a troubled past and thus has trust issues whereas Shambhavi inspite of all the hardships refuses to surrender. Arjun is scared to fall in love and commit. Shambhavi trusts him and gently breaks down his walls, loves him and gives him space till he can't suppress his feelings for her. They make a promise to love each other forever but when life happens, will they keep the promise they made? Is their love strong enough? (Spoilers) The author has weaved magic. A child with no parents is called an ORPHAN but what do you call the parents whose child died? I have always wondered why there is no name for it. So, I googled and came across this article which talks about ' a mourning that defies a natural order'. "Vilomah" meaning against a natural order' as in Grey haired should not bury those with Black hair. Our children should not precede us in death. Death is painful no matter sudden or not but the death of one's own child brings immeasurable grief. The plot is brilliant and the story language simple. I loved how the story was segmented especially the quotes before each chapter. The end is fulfilling and leaves a sense of satisfaction. There was pain in the story and it poured from the words, hitting right in the feels. I cried okay, alot ( don't judge) when she was all alone and when she fell down. I could see something bad coming and how I wished to somehow enter the story and save her from all the grief.

Absolutely brilliant and heart touching story. Couldn't put it down once I started reading it . It was the first book I read by written by Nikita & cant wait to read more of her stories. The story was such a emotional roller coaster. Both Shambhavi & Arjun had a very strong and intense chemistry. I loved Shambhavi's character she was such a down to earth & open .. you get what you see kinda person where as Arjun was a total opposite. They both complimented each other even though being totally opposite of each other. I loved the plot and storyline it was very strong and couldn't put it down down until I was done. Absolutely loved this book. Brilliant job Nikita. Looking forward to reading more of your stories.
The book is not more different from her other writings. I like the ending and emotion in it, Nikita as a talent to show the emotional outcome of the person clearly, that is we can feel the pain in them. What I don't like is their is too much details about unwanted things, (eg: how they work officially) When reading this some times i feel where is the story, But its okay totally a good read.
*This is clearly my opinion, Everyone as a different point of view so don't take it serious. Try the book you like it or not by reading you will get some Idea/Knowledge about something.
This is the first book I have read of Nikita Singh. It is a nice book with a simple story line. It tends to meander through several tragic twists - many predictable though. The characters of Arjun, Shambhavi and her friends are all good. Some more fun and richer scenarios/sequences would have made this an even better book.
If you like simple love stories - well worth a read.....
“ All it takes is one turn of events, so change lives forever. Some consequences remain irreversible for a lifetime.”- The Promise by Nikita Singh
I read this book in 2013, which is full of love and tragic moments. Good thing is that each chapter in this book starts with quotes, which gives you a hint of incidents going to happen in that chapter. Really like the character Sambhavi who is a free spirit girl, faces many challenges in life but never crib about life. She works hard to find her passion and adore her family and friends. I recommend reading this book to those who love reading love stories to know more about the story and characters who affect Sambhavi’s life and make her character so strong. Story transition is so smooth, from a happy love life to a tragic life, you will definitely enjoy reading this book.
The Promise by Nikita Singh is a touching story about love, heartbreak, and healing. The book follows the lives of Shambhavi, an interior designer, and Arjun, a businessman. They fall in love, but their relationship faces many challenges, especially when things don’t go as planned.
The novel shows how promises can impact our lives, and how difficult it can be to keep them. Nikita Singh does a great job of expressing the feelings of both characters, making readers feel connected to them. The emotions in the story are real and relatable, which is the strength of the book.
However, the story can be a bit predictable at times, and some parts feel a little slow. But overall, it's a heartwarming story about dealing with pain and finding hope again. If you enjoy romantic stories with emotional depth, this book is worth a read.
📈 After reading this, I couldn’t help but feel conflicted. While I understand the importance of forgiveness, I find it hard to like Arjun. His actions shaped Sambhavi into who she became, and that frustration lingers. I also felt the story rushed through the arrival of the second child, especially since both characters were still emotionally broken. It would’ve been great to see more appreciation for the side characters who stood by them as good friends. They deserved more recognition. Rest this is the story I’m gonna remember long after with all the emotional scares 🥺💗

I fully agree with the reader Arpita Dash reviews about the book. I like the well versed quotes & headlines of each chapter...
The very favourite of mine-"Sometimes we get so blinded by our grief, that we do not see the pain others are going through.Sometimes,we get so blinded by the grief others are feeling that we do not see our pain. *The later is something only someone who truly & completely is capable of. That is the purest form of love.*"
At times I felt the story is dragging. Even if you skip 10 pages, the story line does not change or nothing new happens. Like the typical Serials, where you don't watch it for a month, you'll be still able to grasp the story.
Recommend? If you are at the initial stage of reading book or if you need a light reading and like romantic novels then go for it.
I was smitten with this book when I first read it a long while back. I wanted to revisit it and finished reading it a few days back and whew! What a snoozefest! Wanted to throw this book at the wall and then felt bad for the wall. Unrealistic and extremist characters (either 100% good or 100% bad, which is never possible realistically), far fetched themes. Don't even get me started on the writing style. I could have written it better in high school. The only saving grace was the fact that I loved it as a naive kid. Needless to say I've come a long way xD.
“All it takes is one turn of events, to change lives forever. Some consequences remain irreversible for a lifetime” Book : The Promise Author : Nikita Singh Genre : Contemporary Romance Pages : 237 “When we fight our hearts, to prevent ourselves from falling in love, the conflict is inevitably lost. Shambhavi is a small scale interior designer with a tough family background where she have to struggle for each and every penny for the treatment of her ailing father. And on the other hand Arjun Datta, a charismatic, rich businessman with the bad past, leads an aloof life with no human connection. Will she be brave enough to come out of it ? Can she survive the tragedies imposed upon her on the spur of the moment ? “A broken heart can be mended. Broken trust can never be fixed. The crack is forever.” Review : The Promise is one of the best books by Nikita Singh. The book has a strong and solid plot, which is the most important thing to consider in a book because nowadays we read so many book with literally no story at all. The story is narrated from Shambhavi as well as Arjun's point of view, which help the readers to know both the characters clearly. Arjun's character is built immaculately, from Shambhavi's eyes he had been sketched as an ideally flawless man with whom readers will instantly fall in love with, as Shambhavi does. While reading his side of the story is when the readers get to know him as a person without rose tinted glasses. Shambhavi's narrative style and character was something one could easily associate with. The author has penned the characters in such a way that the readers get emotionally attached to them, once it is accomplished by any book then that book is a success. This book is so emotionally written and the emotional turmoils the characters undergoes is felt by the readers explicitly. All the chapters in this book starts with an impressive quotation and that gives a brief introduction about the chapter and what to expect out of it. The language was simple and was a easy read. It more or less feels like the protagonists are sitting nearby and whispering their story to us. Supporting characters had a crisp and right amount of scenes and certain conversations with them were deep and appreciable. The best parts are Shambhavi's friends Mili and Tutul's looking after and being there for her. And her father Mr.Sen standing by her through thick and thin were heart touching and emotional. This is a heart-wrenching story of a girl who is persistently faced by hardship yet encounters all of them with a smile plastered all over her face. The power of her resilience is so fascinating. It teaches us, the positive vibes and optimism can make a person endure even the worst of situations heroically. Though it is a tragic plot, it still engulfs the readers with hope and sanguine and it also has an admirable romance. The only drawback in this book was the parts before the introduction of the male protagonist was bit draggy, once he gave his entrance the story started to pick pace. And the last couple of chapters had so many details which could have been avoided. Otherwise it was near to perfection, so these minute flaws can be ignored without a seconds thought. My opinion : Even though it's quite melodramatic, I totally loved this book, it has been in my favorites list for more than six years and I re-read it numerous times. Arjun Datta is one of my book boyfriends. This book made cry and I could almost feel the physical and mental agony of the characters. I would recommend this book to all, it is totally worth reading. This book is best suited for beginners since it is written in simple English, I'm sure they will fall in love with reading. If you want to do a quick read or looking forward to have some emotional connections with the characters or fan of romance or if you simply want to know whether this author can make you cry ? Go ahead and read this book like NOW. PS : I love this book so very much that's why I'm giving five start rating and of course it deserves it. Believe me and read this book. I hope you will love it as much as I do. Happy Reading Folks!!!!
