Isabel: Running on the Edge tells a story about fourteen-year-old Isabel who moves, along with her three siblings and parents, into a new town where they have to start all over. Isabel misses her old life and hopes to eventually return to her hometown, Ravenwood but due to money troubles and the mysterious accident her father was in, her family is forced to stay. Things become really difficult for Isabel at the beginning. The new classmates, particularly one of the girls, is giving her hard time, her father is not doing well both physically and psychologically and on top of that, her mother decides to take her younger sister and leave home. Isabel feels lonely and lost, however, the art class, running and a growing bond with a boy form her class, Michael, might lift her spirit after all.
E.M.Cooper wrote a beautiful coming of age story, one that my inner teenage girl emphasised with utterly. Behind the family and school troubles the main character mainly struggles to find herself and her bliss in life. She becomes a strong and compassionate girl who learns to understand other people flaws and eventually even manages to make her foes into friends.
Though Isabel is going through hard times, it still is an up-lifting and relaxing read overall. I particularly enjoyed the growing relationship between Isabel, Michael and the unlikely girl Jessica. It depicts so beautifully childhood friendships and first feelings of affection. It’s a beautiful story and I would recommend it to everyone, not only to teenage girls, because I believe it’s a classical story of self discovery and understanding oneself through observing the world around you.
