There are great things about this book: I love the basic premise, that we should cook just as well for ourselves as we do for others. However, most of the recipes were complicated - not simply beautiful- and used foodie ingredients specific to the UK. I am not the most keen on going to a specialty shop for ingredients (I take public transit so, trust me, expensive specialty shops are not on bus routes) but these ingredients weren't available to me even at those shops and some couldn't even be special ordered/bought online. As beautiful as the cookbook was, it was impossible for this Big City Canadian to cook from.
You may think that a cookbook for one is rather sad; you would be mistaken.
During my research into cooking meals for one, I found solo by Linda Tuuby. Not only is this a book based on its namesake, solo meals, but also from the first page, you can see it’s a book about the intrinsic nature of comfort and self-nurturing found in the solace of eating.
Whilst I don’t go for heavy ‘food styled’ books, this one is different; it cleverly showcases food in its most beautiful form whilst inspiring you to look at what’s in the store cupboard a little differently.
With beautiful quotes scarred from page to page, inspiration on each dish and what it means to the author bring this book forward as a base for self-cooking and self-healing.
My personal recommendation for anyone looking to hit their culinary reset button.
