YA epic version of the end of the world by demons.
Most of the characters are likable but those that are not are really despicable. Lots of action and coming to terms with who you are and your bigest fears, not always what you believed them to be. The plot was tedious in some areas, but all good stories get that way, to let the momentum build. All in all a descent read and worth a recommendation.
The very unique conceptions of this trilogy bring new fantasy lore to the beliefs of demons in an alternate dimension to that of Earth. The distinction rarely tackled in the species of daemons are likewise unique. The de-evolution which isn't the most accurate way to describe the relationship between daemons, demons and humankind gives a pseudoscientific possibility to the supernatural involved. The world that's built is a very real society where things happen that are supernatural, but that are contained with the equivalent of a secret society charged with these responsibilities. The characters promote empathetic understanding of the significant number of different personalities.
The information brought to reader's minds doesn't just stop in the fantasy. The incorporation of certain psychological illnesses into the story is masterful and one-hundred percent intuitive and unique. The ways it fits into the story is more than just the aforementioned, it gives importance to the suffering of those with the respective illnesses involved. Like leading a horse to water to drink, readers arrive at certain conclusions that deal with the world we live in.
I implore you to read each of my reviews of the three books making up this outstanding trilogy: Gateway; Chasm; & Tether. Make the decision to purchase them either separately or as the boxset, as it is herein. It doesn't matter how you go about reading them, it just matters that you do. I guarantee the journey will be fulfilling, especially those touched by fantasy, and those touched by psychology.
I thoroughly enjoyed this trilogy. It was unique; world building and character development was excellent! Em finds herself waking up in a mental institution after an attempted suicide, guided by the Voice in her head. This is where she meets Teran and Callie. The Voice seems to be ever present, always telling her not to trust people, until Teran. A life-changing event at the institute changes her world forever; things she never thought possible come to life. In a series of dangerous situations, Em must come to terms with who she really is and learn to fight internal and real demons if she wants to live and save the lives of others. With Teran and close friends by her side, will they be able to defeat the evil that's clawing to break free? These books are amazing! They just keep getting better as you read them! I couldn't put it down until I was done! It's definitely a must-read! You won't be disappointed.
I read straight through the trilogy and really had a hard time putting it down. I love urban fantasy and demons especially, this was a slightly different take on the demon dimension with a great non-religious or maybe just a bit spiritual perspective. The heroine spends a little more time fighting than she does falling in love which is always a plus.
