The Thrown Away post-apocalyptic saga continues...

Jack is surprised when his imprisonment at the hands of the Junkers is cut short. Instead of keeping him locked up, as he expected them to do for a long time, they offer him a job.

The job means hunting down something that they haven't been able to find and they believe he, with his talent for locating things, is what they need.

But the item they want him to recover is tech from the old world. What do the junkers need it for? What are the motivations of their strange leader? Is it dangerous? Maybe some things are best left hidden?

I read these books in the boxed set, but am reviewing each separately to get proper credit for my annual Goodreads challenge. In the end this series turned out to be a pretty amazing work of dystopian fiction. In the beginning I wasn't sure I would stick with it because the author was jumping around so much in the timeline. I like my books to read "in a straight line." That is, from beginning to end with no flashbacks. The first part of this story jumps frequently, e.g., present to past to distant past then back to present - then repeat. It is my personal preference that authors do not write that way as I personally find it frustrating. Nevertheless, the flashbacks eventually stopped and the story developed into a captivating tale. I really enjoyed the overall story and now I'm looking forward to the next work by Mr. James.

Oh boy, this was a rough one. Definitely in need of a good proofreader and editor. Pretty astounding how many grammatical errors and misspellings there were. The story itself was fine, although a little bland and the author is still trying to throw some flashbacks in to the mix. Looks like there's either 2 or 5 more books in the series, but it's hard to tell for sure. I think it's probably best if I just bow out now, anyway.

Another great installment of this fast-paced post-apocalyptic series, which sees reunions and new characters for Jack to understand.

Will he take on the proposition and what will happen next? And Lisa is closer to the truth.

Mysterious and intriguing.

Short but engrossing - I'm glad I have the omnibus edition.

Highly recommended.

The first four parts of this story were rather flat but each ended in such a way that compelled me to continue on with the story. Thrown Away 5 is much like the previous four. Our main character lives in a post apocalyptic world. What happened to the world is never explained. The governing authority/corporation, of which we know very little, seems obsessed with finding technology amidst the rubble that remains of the gone away world. To accomplish this, individuals are kidnapped and forced to dig through the junk. Our main character is on a quest to find the young boy for whom he was caring. The boy was kidnapped for this purpose. The main character then allows himself to be kidnapped in order to find the boy. The boy is eventually found living with a group of "junkers", who are also looking for a piece of old technology, and the main character is enlisted to help them.

This installment, which I expected to be the conclusion, since there are no other published installments, is a bit different from the others. Whereas the previous installments focused on the search for the boy, now that he has been found, the purposes of the junkers and the governing authority begins to be revealed. However, we are left with yet another cliffhanger, albeit a far more interesting one than in the past. No part of the story is wrapped up. The story is clearly intended to continue up but there are no indications when it will be continued. To date, there is no Thrown Away 6, and the author's website offers up no information (Thrown Away 5) is listed as "coming soon".

To this point, the story has been rather flat but now is beginning to show signs of life but it is unknown whether or not it will be continued.

With every instalment, this serial evolves and expands into something much more complex. It's a real pleasure to be carried along for the ride!
