Misty Griffin is the author of her best selling memoir Tears of the Silenced. Misty wrote her memoir to raise awareness about child abuse and sexual assault cover up among the Amish and other strict religious groups.
Misty Griffin’s inspiring story takes you through her ordeal as a severely abused child and then her experiences as a young woman in an Amish community- a place where pedophilia was never reported or punished - and finally her escape and efforts to save her sister and bring the perpetrators to justice, all while adapting to a modern life she had never known.
Now a Registered Nurse, happily married and with a child of her own, Misty has dedicated her life to making a difference.
Misty has also been to D.C, accompanied by her former Mennonite friend Jasper Hoffman and spoken personally to a member of congress about sexual assault and child abuse among the Amish and Mennonites.
Misty hopes to pass legislation to mandate reporting of child abuse in cloistered communities such as the Amish and to extend Erin’s Law - which mandates age-appropriate sex abuse prevention education in public schools - to private schools and religious communities. Misty’s change.org petition #invisible calls on Congress, the Senate and President Biden to take action. You can sign the petition on Misty's website https://www.mistygriffin.com/

It brings to life what the early settlers went through, makes me very thankful that I did not live back in those days, also that I did not belong to those strict Amish. I did belong to an Amish Church and thought that to obey the rules of the Church would get you to Heaven, but Praise The Lord! I was saved March 11, 1972 when I asked Jesus to come into my heart, it is a Gift of God not of works!
Ephesians 2:8,9
8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: [it is] the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast.
It was nearly impossible to put this book down. Hannah is a young bride in an old-order Amish church in the 1800's. It was around the time when the ministers and bishops first made the list of rules the members were forced to abide by. Occasionally she questioned the rules but knew she had to obey them or face the shunning. During this time a group of Amish from Europe wanted to immigrate to America and asked if several Amish families would join them in Kansas to start a new community. Benjamin and Hannah are part of the group of settlers that move to the prairies. They face many challenges and disaster strikes. This is a fascinating book based on a true account. After reading it I was extremely thankful that I was not born Amish or living on the wild prairies during the times of the pioneers.
I learned so much about the beginning of the Amish church especially of the most strict older order. I loved and enjoyed this book especially the story of the families establishing themselves in unsettled prairie lands of the mid-west.
I absolutely loved it! I couldn't put it down! I thank the author as she gave us insight to how the Amish lived back then. It also shows how how the Ordnung was written up and changed throughout the decades. I loved how Misty put the definition of the inventions that have transpired through the years and how the Amish considered some of them evil. I thought Hannah was a brave young woman to go through what she has. I would've loved to live back then! To be a pioneer would have been an adventure to me! 5 stars for Misty Griffin. I am currently reading the 2nd book as well. I hope there is a third one on the way!
If you enjoy history you will like the historical facts included in the story. It tell how the Amish became an uniform religion by the establishment of religious rules. The Amish migrate to Kansas to homestead on free land. Their struggles to survive with hardships is made more difficult when the German Amish group arrives. Blending their religious practices causes changes. Then the indians run wild stealing women and children. An adventure you will want to read.
I have read many Amish stories. This was more of a historical type of reading about how people lived about the land. It did not matter who or what you are . It is to bad that the Indians were treated so poorly.
I received this book for free from the author for a honest review. I'm thankful for Misty giving us an honest look at the Amish. She's told us the differences and why they believe what they do/dress like they do. This is a story of hard times and new homelands. Sticking to your beliefs.
Wonderful story aligned with historical facts as a group of Amish move westward and another group from Europe come together to settle in the state of Kansas. Interesting and insightful into the hearts of these Amish characters.
I enjoyed this story. It could use an editor to help catch some errors but they didn't prevent me from enjoying the story. This story us an easy read, light on details.
Loved this fascinating look into the rules of the Amish and the structure of the religion. Yet the deep friendships and bonds they have for one another. The main character Hannah is easy to connect with. Highly recommend
Amish settlers move further west encountering incredible obstacles to overcome in the new country. This tale is about Amish communities, including some from Germany and Russia, settling in Kansas making sod homes, planting crops and living in fear of Indian uprising.
I've never read a book by this author before. But when I got to the end I immediately purchased book 2. This series is not only gripping for its story but also provides insight into the Amish that I've never found in other Amish stories . I love the Amish genre read many books. I admit to being tough on riders that do not do their homework as far as knowing the culture at the various Amish groups . With Miss Griffin's book One does not have to be concerned because she was Amish and it shows that she misses her family and browns from that period of her life . But it also shows what the negative side of being Amish is likE.
What is truly remarkable is the Indian aspect in this book. It is something I never considered and once introduced , understanding that the Amish seek for no one to stand out, you can imagine how an Indian or half Indian child would be treated.
The writer inserts historical facts and much insight into the Amish life that makes this book a true standout not only as a novel but as a learning tool for discovering more about the Amish . After I finish this book the very first thing I did was to purchase the second book .
Interesting to know the history of the Amish - the actual historical notes at the beginning of each chapter were a bit disruptive and could have been footnotes.
Nothing more than "a day in the life" of a very cultish sect. The last 10 pages or so could/should have been developed more to make an actual story of this. Boring.
I thoroughly enjoy reading stories about the Amish and this novel is no exception. However, it is sorely in need of a proofreader. "Drug" for "dragged" is annoying. Many sentences are missing words or contain double words which detract from the story.
Very informative about the start and on ward of the Amish people and how they live and what their rules to follow are called Ordnungs. Story of a young woman who just gets married and lots of families in their area decide to move to Kansas supposedly to have lots of free land and such. This story is also about Native Americans and how the government took their land and killed lots of them and they were rightly angry at the white men that did this to them. Hannah the girl and a few others got captured by the Indians that raided their homes. Later on one of the native womens brother had raped her. They ended up getting freed because of her. Later she had twins babies but were they her husbands or the warriors? Lots of Amish information in this book.
Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres and this author has included the history of the time and place where her characters live to give us a clearer understanding of what their world was truly like. Heartbreaking at times but also leaves the reader with the warm fuzzy feeling we all want from our storylines. I enjoyed this book very much but it ended much too soon.
Very informative i enjoyed Reading and being educated about the amish societies. They folled the ordung which was a set of rules put together by the leaders which they followed strictly.
Its a good book and very informative. It helped me to understand the Amish culture and beliefs as it relates to their way of life.
What a great book. I liked the history information at the start of each chapter. Just small entries to help you understand what is happening in that time frame. The Amish have always interested me and this book brought to light some interesting facts about them and how their lives are different from ours. I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review.
Supposed to be about interaction between Amish and the remnants of a tribe of native Americans trying to return to their tribal grounds. Most of it sings the praises of the Amish very long and boring Typos and grammar didn't help.
