Aisling Grimlock’s life is a mess. Her mother might be back from the dead. Wraiths appear to be after her again. Her father is definitely up to something. Michigan’s most calamity-prone grim reaper is in a pickle, and the only one she can trust with a haunting secret is her boyfriend Griffin. Aisling is determined to find answers before she unloads a heavy dose of truth on her family, but when things become dangerous, Aisling’s life is in jeopardy … again. The wraiths are back and on the move, and their primary goal appears to be getting their hands on Aisling. They’ve enlisted other supernatural help this time, and when gargoyles literally start dropping from the sky Aisling has no choice but to be honest. The Grimlocks are at a crossroad. The only thing they know for certain is that they will fight together to make sure they don’t die alone.
When I was a kid, I was torn between whether or not I was going to grow up and be the Incredible Hulk or Wonder Woman. I flirted with being a Jedi Knight for awhile, but I wasn't up for the intense travel associated with the gig. In my teens, I settled on being a writer -- although I had no idea the effort that would entail. Not only am I a writer now, but I'm a writer in several different mediums. I'm a longtime newspaper reporter, an avid reader and a voracious science fiction fanatic.
This family is exhausting and needs therapy, however, their type of humor is my style so I enjoy reading their snarkiness. Aisling has a secret and only Giffin is in on the secret. She is hunting for any evidence that her mom "may" be alive and if she is, is she the mom they knew or evil? Is she the one hunting Aisling? There's attacks by gargoyles, more wraiths and Griffin's partner is up to something. A huge secret is revealed as well as a conspiracy years in the making that has Aisling at the center of it all. I will say that Griffin was Aisling's rock in this book and it was great to see how much of a support he is and how entrenched in the family he is becoming. The brothers and even the dad were awful to Aisling in this book and it's a credit to the author that you feel her emotions, her pain and desolation. However, having a partner who has her back no matter what make such a difference. The book is fast paced, humorous, moving the story forward in terms of characters and relationships.
Next to the Witches of the Midwest series, this is my second favorite Amanda M. Lee series and I'm looking forward to reading the next. But if there's one complaint I have, it's the author having the characters spending too much time repeating conversations and retelling of events. They are an unnecessary time wasters that would be better summarized. Actually I'm guessing she must realize it because at one point, Aisling's father basically tells her she's rambling on too much and to get to the point (he doesn't say that exactly, but he does infer such). On a good note, I love the camaraderie (for the most part) that exists between Aisling and her brothers. You can tell this is a family who would do anything for each other, even if they are mad at each other.
My other complaint (and this would go for at least two of the other series as well--Avery Shaw and Covenant College) is the almost consistent catty and jealous fighting between the lead female protagonists and other female characters. Yes, they have their close female friends, but anyone else is generally considered (and usually wrongfully) competition over a boyfriend/lover. They irrationally fear that they will be abandoned and left behind. I hope to see future series follow a different direction.
At the end of the last book, Aisling discovered something life changing for not just herself but all the family and friends around her. The trouble is she doesn't know what to do. Happily, boyfriend Griffin is by her side and he really comes to the fore in this book, showing how much he loves Aisling and how much he is willing to put up with from her family! Whilst the issues are serious, much snarky humour and laughter is to be had along the way. Ultimately though Aisling is learning (sometimes :-)) to be more sensible about her decisions and leans to act in more of a team setting. There is a much greater sense of the world surrounding the Grimlocks and their reaper business, and there is far more at play here than meets the eye. I love how the relationships all play out and that ending is one hell of a showstopper! On the next book!
This book was ok. The plot got pretty interesting and it ended on a cliff hanger. 75 percent of this was childish arguing back and forth and it drove me crazy. If the characters were acting like adults and not so much childish arguments it would have been much better. I will read the next book cause I am curious. I just don’t think I am going to jump right to it
What to do during Easter weekend with a pandemic raging? Read all day! This series makes me laugh and right now I’m needing to laugh. Another great book and another great cliffhanger!
I loved the concept and world so much that I tried to keep going through the sexism and homophobia that went not called out but honestly with the police captains comment followed by the word “g*mpy” being used at the start of chapter 13 I had to put them down. It’s been not cool to used derogatory terms about disabled folk for over a decade now. I genuinely don’t think this author knows any actual gay people in their mid/late 20s let anyone who was that age around when these books came out. If you’re gonna make the values go back over a decade - time stamp your story. It at least provides an excuse for the what I can only assume is accidental bigotry while giving the author plenty of time to learn that the world has indeed evolved from “girl” being an insult... and you don’t need to remind us that it once was every chapter. I sincerely hope this author does some diversity training and learns about internalized sexism. People write what they know and I bet some implicit bias testing and research could be very helpful in the authors growing as a human and a writer.
Aisling thinks her mother may be back from the dead, and she's not really sure that's a good thing. She thinks her dad may be hiding something, and she may find out what it is. But she is also keeping a secret from her family, and she's not really sure how to handle it.
Things get even more complicated when the wraiths come back, and a new threat comes into Aisling's life, and she isn't sure how to deal with it.
This book was really great! I adored everything going on in it, and I thought it was hilarious as well. The relationship between Aisling and her brothers is freaking awesome. I adore reading about them and their antics. I can't wait to read more.
Quick read and the entertaining dialog between the Grimlock family make this book a 4 star in my book. Love the characters from the flamboyantly gay best friend Jerry to the sexy boyfriend and of clues the Grimlock brothers! Really enjoyed this!
Excellent read gotta to love this family of readers and I love the humor between the characters. Just enough mystery, suspense and romance for everyone
I read the first three books of this series together in a collection. The series is on Kindle Unlimited. It's a paranormal mystery/romance/urban fantasy with tons of snarky banter among the 8 main characters, 6 of which make up a family. (50+ yr old dad, 4 brothers and 1 sister, all 20-somethings - mom died 10 years ago) plus the sister's long-time best friend since kindergarten (who might as well be family) plus her new boyfriend. The family all work as grim reapers, transporting souls to the afterlife. They are all human with a bit of extra supernatural-ness that allows them to see and interact with the souls of the departed. The bad guys are wraiths (like the guards of Azkaban - they eat souls) and ghouls (witches that prolong their life by eating souls.)
Overall, the series is very funny because of the boisterous interactions among the siblings.
In the first book, there are extra wraiths in town, and a bad ghoul controlling them.
Second book shouldn't have so many wraiths, but there are still a ton around. Turns out there's another plot afoot.
Third book reveals a family enemy, a great big lie about the mom, and yet more wraiths in the picture, plus some gargoyles.
As the series progresses, little things about why the sister is being targeted by so many groups are slowly revealed.
4.5 Stars... The mystery continues to unfold for the Grimlock family as the danger towards Aisling increases... Wraiths and gargoyles seem to be appearing in spades to capture the "key", but the "key" to what???... On top of all that, Aisling is carrying a secret that may destroy her family... With the help of her sexy, protective boyfriend, Griffin, Aisling begins to uncover the truth but at what cost?... Another crazy ride with the Grimlock family and all their insane antics... I absolutely love this series which makes me laugh and swoon form one moment to the next... Looking forward to more theatrics from these hysterical characters... My only question is, which Grimlock child will finally end up in the dungeon?:)
Is she or isn't she still alive and why do they want Aisling?
Fantastic series. Keeping the fact that her mother might still be alive secret is killing her. If it wasn't for her boyfriend she wouldn't be able to cope. However telling her father and brothers leads to a row that leads to an attack on her. Who is telling the truth about her mother's death? Why do the wraiths only have one goal - to get her. Why are gargoyles now involved and who is orchestrating all this behind the scenes. The characters just get better and more out there as the series continues. Fast moving plot that will have you engrossed. Brilliant series.
Here's the thing. I like these books a lot. I'm a sucker for a good family dynamic, and add in Jerry and Griffin and I'm downright ecstatic. The whole grim reaper thing is awesome, and I love that that's here. And the whole mom mystery stuff is great. But the constant bickering is starting to get on my nerves a little. Aisling is snarky, I know that, but I want her to have one conversation - just one! - without a snarky comment. Just saying. Still, I'll probably read book four after that cliffhanger. 4 stars.
Point off for nasty cliff hanger. If it weren’t Kindle Unlimited and I didn’t already download the next book (and know what basically was going to happen because I read Moonstone series first), I’d have stopped reading the series.
Amanda M. Lee does like her humor to be family bickering in all of her series. It can became tiresome and juvenile.
She keeps the pace moving so otherwise, easy books to read.
This series started out quite strong, but with every new book, it seems to be more and more like a washed-out version of "Wicked Witches of Midwest". Main characters are less sassy and more childish. Secondary characters are more vague and their personalitues are more and more monochrome with every new background character. And the plot is okay-ish, but it fails to truly capture my interest. While it is not a terrible series, I'm probably stopping after this book and skipping the rest.
Wraiths still seem to be coming after Aisling and she is keeping a big secret from her family.
What I enjoyed: * the family interactions are so amusing * Aisling and Griffin are perfect for each other * Finding out about other reaper families (and that there was summer camp) * the ending
What could be better: * Aisling behaved a bit better this time, but mostly because the others wouldn't let her out of their sight
Good plot. Predictable characters. Lots of fun. Can’t wait to read the next one. Much more likeable main character than Avery Shaw. Reminds me a bit too much of Bay Winchester, including the relationship with Griffin. Love the family home, and all the brothers. Again it reminds me a little of the Midwest series but no old witchy great aunt. Instead we get Jerry and he is wonderful.
Glad Aisling is out of her funk and back to snark and sarcasm. Her hair pulling is back too, but Angelina deserves it. Wraiths and dog bowls are trailing Aisling and trying to capture her for some tool of another reaper family (Everett). She finally tells her family about the rumor her mom isn't dead, but they are really pissed off at her for keeping a secret from them. Great series!!
Good book. I like the snark in all of Amanda Lee’s books and this was there as well. I’ve become addicted to the snark and to the reality of the characters. In spite f not living in a paranormal world, I wish that people, families, etc. could get along in real life as they do in Lee’s books. With the knowledge that they are loved and do not let their feelings get hurt to the point they forget that love is part and parcel of their lives.
This was a fun romp from beginning to end. Thank you!
I do have a huge issue with a grammatical error that has appeared in every one of Ms Lee's books that I have read series. She often uses the word I as the object of the preposition, as in "for Luke and I," instead of the correct usage of "for Luke and me." It is very disappointing and frustrating for this reader.
I wish I had the loving mom like Aisling did. I had Gma love, but we all know a child wants the love, support and affection that only parents can give.
My heart rolled with happiness, sadness and anger with all the twists and turns.
Glad I found these books. I think Asiling has a lot to learn still but she is getting there. I sometimes think there are more then enough characters and some get put on the sides. I hope we get to see the boys date out some. It would be interesting if they brought a few home to pay back Dad. All together great book. Can't beleave how it ended.
The Grimlocks deliver again in a story that is a mix between urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and a cozy mystery, with lots of snark. Aisling and Griffin are closer than ever and Jerry, of course, is always hysterical. I'm looking forward to the continuation of the story.
Just finished reading Aisling Grimlock book 3. Love the family setting of this series. There's suspense, romance and laughter to be had throughout the book. I have read and follow a lot of Ms. Lee's series and have never been disappointed. She always delivers the best!
The back and forth banter was a bit much this time. Although I can picture the whole scene in my head of course. Aisling is feisty as ever with her sidekick Jerry and boyfriend Griffin. More turn of events to lead us to her mother possibly being alive and trying to kill her. Aisling finally gets some answers and they aren’t what she expected.
These books just keep getting better and better. I love how Griffin is sticking with Aisling through it all and how realistic her family is portrayed. There are so many twists and turns thrown in that are out of left field yet they're genius. I really hope each Grimlock brother also gets their own series.
