The Chronicles of Calibran #0.5

The Blue Dragon's War

Rate this book
For thousands of years, the Dragons ruled the continent of Calibran. Wielding magic and an intelligence few could match, their whim was law, and the lesser beings were merely playthings and game pieces.

But not everyone was content to be ruled by the dragons.

The minotaurs of Kehlaktur are strong, fierce and independent. They boast that their city needs no walls to keep them safe, only the strong arms and brave hearts of their warriors. And up till now, they have been right.

They have something the Blue Dragon wants.

Glaurax the Deep comes to the minotaurs with an offer: accept his rule and he will transform them into a mighty army and make them masters of all, subject only to the dragon.

But, the minotaurs value their freedom too highly to be ruled by a dragon tyrant. Now, the dragon is coming to take by force what the minotaurs would not give willingly. With the aid of madmen and blood magic, swords and axes, the minotaurs will fight to stay free.

When you’re fighting a dragon, though, is all that enough?

When you think of epic fantasies, do you think of dragons, warriors, quests and battles? What about minotaurs? When you think of epic fantasies, does the word fresh come to mind? Welcome to the world created by Alberto Bieri and Sean Newton, where dragons have been the supreme and often brutal rulers for thousands of years and the independent minotaurs are given an offer they have decided to refuse.

If they will not submit to the mighty dragon tyrant, they will be taken by force. Can the minotaurs hold off the terrible onslaught of the dragons and their warriors? Magic and mayhem, youth and inexperience, as well as calculating scheming will make for a legendary battle that will be re-told for centuries. And I felt like I was there.

The Blue Dragon’s War the prelude to the Chronicles of Calibran is short, fierce and non-stop from start to finish! Se the battle of the titans come to life as the power and might of the dragons come up against the determination of the minotaurs. Blood will flow, heroes will fall and heroes will be born.

Whoa! I was hooked! If this is what we can expect from the writing team of Sean Newton and Alberto Bieri, with their in-depth details, clever character casting and wonderful story-telling abilities, this fantasy series will definitely be epic! Want to try a taste of epic fantasy? This quick read is a great place to start.

I received a review copy from Alberto Bieri in exchange for my honest review.

Once again, Sean provided a great read! I love his fantasy world, and want to visit as often as I can. The dragons and minotaurs are hilarious at times, yet serious when its needed. The war/fight scenes are action packed and the reader is brought into the action. This is an introduction to what I predict to be an excellent series I can see turn into a blockbuster movie. I would definitely go see that!

The Blue Dragon's War: An Epic Fantasy Story is a huge 5 Boundless star book to me. I recommend this to all fantasy readers. If you aren’t a fantasy reader, this book will make you become one....Beth

Belrog the Minotaur tells the younger minotaurs the tale of Grom, a legendary minotaur warrior who fought the Blue Dragon in a great war. Grom was once a simple soldier, apprenticed to learn from one of the fighting Masters. General Kelkak leads them to war when a dragon and his army of orcs threaten their peaceful city. The dragon has orcs and evil elves on his side, but the Minotaurs have their own magicians and a secret company of berserk minotaurs who will fight to the death.

I liked this story pretty well. The world building is good, and I liked the history of the minotaurs. The characters are interesting, but not very complex or deep. The plot has some good scenes, but there is not a lot going on. It's straightforward with very few twists or turning points in the story.

There is some profanity, oddly all jumbled into one chapter, and nowhere else in the book. There are a lot of typos and spelling errors in the ebook that I read. I'm not sure if that was because I received it as an ARC, and maybe an editor has cleaned it up in another edition.

I loved the cool illustrations! There are only a few illustrations, but they are really well done and detailed.

Great Fantasy. The Minotaurs, though simple, have a code and bond that makes the story fun and interesting. The action starts up early and the main characters aren’t afraid to mix it up. The Brothers of the Horn have a cool and unique part that adds to the story, as does the side adventures of Mora the diminutive Minotaur. Thoroughly enjoyable!

I read it on Kindle unlimited.

As soon as I saw the cover and the logo, I knew I had to read it. I love fantasy, but mostly fantasy including dragons. The illustrations and the map show very small on my kindle, but we can find a link that will connect us to the site with a lot more to this world.
We actually find extra pages in the middle of the book with extended information on races, and culture with another chance to connect to the website.

The story is fast, sometimes too much. We get a quick sense of the characters personality, but we look forward for more. This is just book 0 and it's a story told by an elder to young minotaurs. Making the elder narrate the story was a good solution to get away on how fast the characters evolve from 0 to hero.
I also had a lot of fun with the scarce appearance of the human character and how well it helps to characterize the harshness of the minotaur's race. The humor was one of the strongest points.

I loved that the story is focused on minotaurs as heroes and their culture and not a story told of humans in a fantasy world where the minotaurs usually run to help the humans win their battles.

I was surprised how the authors kept the battle, the action and the building up to the end consistent and not slightly confusing. It's a lot of action to deal with and to describe. The waves of attack were not repetitious or dull and included humor and epic moments.

The language flowed well and made it even easier to read in just a few hours. I will add the series to my wish list.

This book is fantastically well done. Every page had me wanting more of it's brutal, magical and respective world. It has everything you'd want in an epic/high fantasy novel while still having a fascinating, fresh and unique take on the so-loved genre.

I very much look forward to the rest of this universe, but this is just the beginning and after reading The Brooding and The Blue Dragon's War, it's safe to say that Calibran has become my favorite fantasy world to visit and I intend to explore and discover what other extraordinary tales it has to offer.

The Dragon King awaits!

I love Newton’s imagination! He creates a fantasy world of Minotaurs, dragons and humans that I can’t wait to read more of. The Blue Dragon's War is action filled storytelling bringing the best of Never Ending Story, Dungeons and Dragons, Narnia and Mortal Online together.

I give The Blue Dragon's War 5 stars. I absolutely loved it and will be watching for more!...Beth

First of a series, this fantasy novel takes place in and around the town of Kehlaktur. It is a decent place, inhabited mostly by minotaurs. One day, a very large blue dragon named Glaurax is found just outside the town. It says that the town will grow and thrive, like never before, under its benevolent guidance (read: slavery). The minotaurs are not interested.

Glaurax has a hard time taking no for an answer. It leaves, and soon returns with an army of orcs to take the town by force. The battle happens at a river not far from the town; orcs and dragon one side, with the minotaurs on the other side. The minotaurs just happen to be outnumbered by ten to one. It is a fearsome battle, with high numbers of casualties on both sides. The dead bodies are thrown in the river. They are so numerous that they create a dam downstream and turn the river into a lake. Who is victorious? Who is still alive at the end?

This is an excellent story and an excellent start to a series. It's got orcs, minotaurs and sword battles; everything a fantasy lover could want. The author certainly knows how to do fantasy the right way.

When you look for fantasy to be fantasy, look here!

Minotaurs, elves, orcs, and a Dragon! This story has it all! There is so much done so right with this story, that you get pulled in from page one, and the events just come one after another in a colossal epic. The story puts minotaurs as our main protagonists for crying out loud! How much does that rock? We have an intelligent antagonist in Glaurax, a blue dragon that breathes...LIGHTNING!!! I just want to put this out there, lightning is my favorite element, especially in fantasy, and using it gets my immediate attention.
And Grom is a young Minotaur in the army of his people, and he has to rise in skill to defend the freedom and autonomy of his people. And the way his people interact with other species of their world is fascinating.
So, for those of us looking to see fantasy keep its heart and soul, you'll find Alberto Bieri and Sean Newton providing a solid haven in their massive story. Superb world building and character development!

In everything I’ve ever seen or read before, minotaurs have always been individuals (even my spellcheck knew ‘minotaur’ but not ‘minotaurs’!)... and usually somewhat of a ‘boss monster’. So to have a novel written about a minotaur society – and to have them be the ‘good guys’ – was something I really enjoyed.

Add that to the fact the narrative was extremely well-written and intelligent, and you have a winner. I also enjoyed the interlude aspect of the story, and even where it steps completely out of the tale to provide more information on a particular topic (including a link to the website).

In short, now I’ve read the prequel, I’m really looking forward to the main Calibran trilogy.

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I read the first book in this series, and I loved it. I was a little disappointed in the editing of this book, however. There were words used mistakenly, such as, loose for lose, and similar errors. The story was great, and the characters were well fleshed out. There was quite a bit of fighting, which I love when it comes to fantasy stories. I will continue to read this series, because of the world and character building, but I hope the next installment is better edited.
