Conversations With The Dead

Rate this book
'Conversations With The Dead’ is a themed trio of very short stories—yes, three VERY short stories—perhaps better described as anecdotal tales with a spooky twist.

Start out with no expectations of this collection, and let the twists surprise you. Suitable for children from 10 up, but please read the tales first to ensure you're happy for your kids to read them. Each story takes around ten minutes to read.

In ‘Of Ghosts and Ghouls,’ Kelly is a very naughty girl, and her ill deeds have grave consequences. In ‘The Unwanted Birthday Gift,’ Mary discovers the unpalatable truth about her family. And in ‘Tomorrow Waits for No Man,’ Luke gets stuck in traffic with an unusual passenger.

Carmen Fox usually writes urban fantasy/paranormal romance/mysteries. ‘Conversations With The Dead’ is her first exploration of the straight-forward paranormal. The ideas discussed would be out of place in her novel-length fiction, so they are offered here without promise, in the hope you might enjoy this excursion into the dying art form of the ‘short short story.’

Conversations With The Dead is a perfect book for Halloween. Three spooky stories with dire, spooky ending with a twist for each of characters who is an unbeliever of the supernatural. For anyone who wants a short story to entertain at a campsite and especially for Halloween, this is the book.

The narrator, Lauren Ezzo is the perfect narrator for this audiobook. She has narrated three short stories with wonderful voice for the characters and for the twist at the end of each story.

I was given this audiobook by the author and voluntary write a review for this book. I was not compensated or influenced in any way for writing this review.

3 incredibly short stories worth the read! These stories remind me so much of the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books that I used to devour as a teen. The stories move quickly, but don't miss any detail. If I had to pick a favorite out of the three, it would be the last one with the ghost in the truck. I really didn't see that particular twist coming, and it reminded me of the old Tales from the Darkside movie with the hitchhiker. If you're looking for a quick Halloween read, I highly recommend it.

Of Ghosts and Ghouls: Kelly’s mom died after having turned most of her money over to a charlatan, Bernadette, who speaks for the the ghosts and ghouls. A violent confrontation leads to a visitation from these ghouls and ghosts. Things don’t go well for Kelly. Solid horror story. Great for a campfire scare.

The Unwanted Birthday Gift: Mary is just turning 18. It’s her birthday. Her parents are separated and she has spent the week with her dad. Ice cream party! She tried to call the spirits but it might have just a been a breeze. What her mom reveals to her doesn’t make Mary happy. But there’s another twist when another relative shows up. Fun tale.

Tomorrow Waits for No Man: Luke is driving on the highway and passes a car accident, emergency vehicles everywhere. A ghost appears in the passenger seat & he tries to ignore him but eventually they talk. Tom (?) talks about his son and asks about Luke’s life. Luke has spent his life not committing to anything and pursuing pleasure. His car is held together with spit and twine because he hasn’t taken the time to keep it maintained. As Luke gets to know Tom and hear about all the things Tom will now miss out on, he really feels for the ghost. Then the real twist hits and it’s a good one. I think this was my favorite story of the trio. It’s also a great tale for the campfire. Has a little bit of a lesson in it too.

All around, great little horror trio. 5/5 stars.

The Narration: Lauren Ezzo gave us a great narration. Her masculine voices sound like men. Different voices for all the characters even though it’s 3 different stories. Especially great with old Tom and Mary’s dying mom. No tech issues with recording. 5/5 stars.

I received a free copy of this book. My opinions are 100% my own.

Most short story collections have a clinker or two. Not this one. Five stars.
