42 books797 followersLike so many romance readers, my first romance novel was by Kathleen Woodiwiss - The Flame and the Flower, to be exact. I was thirteen. I spent the next month working my way through her entire back list. Shortly thereafter I discovered Judith McNaught, Johanna Lindsey, Karen Robards, Catherine Coulter, Shirlee Busbee among others, and devoured their lavish historical epics full of overbearing alpha males and the women who brought them to their knees. I was hooked. My high school teachers marveled at my ability to read romance novels under the desk and still score straight A's. I started to imagine myself, living in a cabin in the mountains somewhere, writing romance novels.
It took me quite awhile to pursue my dream. After graduating from Stanford with a degree in English Literature, I worked in a variety of soul sucking admin jobs before I began my career in marketing. It wasn't exactly my dream job, but at least my writing appeared on several web sites and in many software marketing brochures. Unfortunately I wasn't able to fit the phrase "and her loins melted like hot wax" into any of them.
During my stint as the world's surliest receptionist, I took my first stab at writing. The result was a very melodramatic western historical which reads like a bad Elizabeth Lowell rip off. Its currently languishing on my hard drive, forever stuck on page 330.
Then in fall 2001 I had an incredible stroke of luck and got laid off from my marketing job. I decided it was time to stop saying I wanted to be a writer and to actually give it a serious go. Fortunately my husband, a socially well adjusted alpha male, is a very generous patron of the arts.

When I'm not writing sexy romance, I enjoy running, reading, yoga and watching Food Network and bad reality TV.

5 stars – Romantic Suspense
Kept is the second book in Jami Alden’s Gemini Men series about three ex-military brothers, twins Ethan and Derek and older brother Danny, who run a private security firm that specializes in undercover work for very high-profile, elite clientele. Although I liked the first book in the series, Caught, this installment has a deeper, more intriguing plot, much steamier sex, and the suspense has been stepped up a notch as well. I was very pleasantly surprised and entertained by this one.
Derek “Iceman” Taggart is a security specialist who prides himself on never making mistakes or errors in judgment while working a case. Years of experience as an Army Ranger sniper have taught him how to control his feelings and close off his emotions in order to avoid serious relationships, personal entanglements, and any sort of deep emotional involvement. His hard, tough, cold, distant demeanor makes him a great security expert, but has "kept" him from forming a real connection with anyone besides his brothers, which is just the way he likes it.
While working security at a social benefit, he encounters a beautiful, young socialite and feels an instant pull and attraction that he’s never experienced before. He gives her a ride home and they share a passionate night of hot sex, but he senses something deeper that scares him. They casually part ways, but he has a hard time forgetting about her.
Fast forward a few months...Gemini Security has landed a new high-profile client, Van Weldt Jewelers, and are tasked with providing bodyguard/babysitting duty for the daughter of the recently murdered CEO, who’s also Van Weldt’s star model. Alyssa Miles is a famous party girl and gossip rag queen whose crazy antics pose a threat to Van Weldt’s reputation. Derek is assigned to protect her 24/7, from external threats, but mainly from herself. This of course wouldn’t be a problem except that the fiery beauty also happens to be the same girl he hasn’t been able to stop thinking about since their wild night together months before.
Things get even more complicated when Derek begins to realize that Alyssa’s really a sweet, kind, naïve, trusting, honest, and open girl underneath the glamorous facade and that she offers her love freely and generously; which is the last thing he wants or needs, or so he thinks anyway. Soon he’s dealing with feelings, emotions, and trust issues that he’s spent his whole life avoiding, and so he denies what they have and pushes her away. Of course, when Alyssa’s life is threatened by an obsessed, malevolent villain, Derek has to rely on all his training and experience to save her, but will it be too late?
The plot involves a suspicious double murder-suicide, a blood diamond and arms trafficking ring, and stalker threats, and there are numerous potential suspects thrown in to keep the reader guessing as to who the real baddies are. The sex scenes are scorching hot and frequent without inhibiting the plot or disrupting the story's flow.
The Gemini Men series has some similarity to Lucy Monroe’s Mercenary/Goddard Project series, but with better writing, more sizzling sex, and better suspense. Derek is an emotionally distant ex-Special Forces Lora Leigh-esque alpha military hottie. Kept is a verrry steamy read with great characters, a clever plot, and exciting suspense...I really enjoyed it! My only complaint is the boring, not so attractive guy on the cover who looks nothing like how I pictured Derek. Cover model dissatisfaction notwithstanding, it’s a very entertaining read! 5 stars!

Derek the man who likes to put his foot in his mouth, and Allysa the teflon woman.
This one had a better pace than the first one and kept my interest more.
Derek works with his brothers for their security firm and Alyssa is a media princess. She has troubles and she has HAD troubles. Bad press seems to stick to her.
Derek is all set to fall for Allysa, until he finds out who she is. He foolishly lets the tabloids cloud his opionion, as if anything you read in the grocery check out line can be taken seriously!! sheesh. Next thing he knows, he's her new bodyguard and of course it's a body he can't forget.
I liked the MCs just as much as the first book, but like I said, the story flowed better. Allysa isn't wishy washy. She gives as good as she gets and she doesn't take offense easily which is a good thing. There's just enough action and suspense balanced with just enough romance/attraction. The intrigue was good and kept me on my toes.
And don't forget the fabulous grovelling. (enough to make up for fabulous asshat accusations?... I think so).

Well, ok. Wow. To think I almost gave this out unread. I surprisingly loved this? This had everything that the first book fell short on. I generally don't love one-night stand tropes but here was an exception because the author made up for that with the slow burn that followed afterwards with the stoic, emotionally closed off hero Derek fighting his attraction to his client Alyssa Miles, a notorious "party girl" socialite who is a tabloid darling. If you loved the movie The Bodyguard then I recommend this. (not to confuse it with the series Bodyguard that my man Richard Madden is in ☝️) Is this story groundbreaking, original or new? No. But the leads chemistry and personal growth and oh yeah hot sex keep you engaged. I needed excitement and this gave it to me. You have sexual tension, angst, danger, suspense, spicy sex scenes and a murder plot. And I have to say for the most quiet of the Taggart brothers, I had no idea Derek was so insatiable. Good lorrrd man. 😳
Alyssa is everything I look for in a spoiled pampered heroine, which I usually avoid. She was the perfect balance of flirtatious, fun, sweet, vulnerable, big-hearted and kind. I feel like a lot of the times the scales tip too far to one side when it comes to writing messy heroines like this. I also found her more endearing and just all around more likable than Toni who didn't feel as fleshed out which hurt the romance with Ethan in Book 1. The plot here was also much more fast paced with a lot of players involved that had you guessing who was working with who to set up Alyssa. That being said, I did think there were one too many chiefs in the kitchen, 6 people were involved/suspected so it's a lot to keep track of. Alyssa's story reminded me a lot of Britney Spears with how her family and the people around her are all mistreating her and using her and taking advantage of her big heart. I thought Jami Alden did a nice job of portraying how the press manipulates situations to make famous people like Alyssa look awful and feed the narrative of her being a trashy stupid trainwreck. I'm so glad she learned to stand up for herself and not let others--men in particular--walk all over her, Derek included. Her deep insecurity about being called "stupid" was played throughout this and I was very happy she had her moment in the sun to finally say enough. Like I said the self-growth in this one is quite good and delicious.
So yeah, I liked this. It wasn't perfect but I'm keeping my copy for now so that's a compliment since I only keep books I really like. I'll be completely honest though, if I didn't own all 3 books I would have just left it here and moved on because Danny's story isn't really enticing me to read his book given it's a second chance romance, which is a trope I loathe to my core. So we'll see how far I get cause I already feel I might bail on it.
PS: Whoever designed the cover did this author real dirty. I've never seen a book cover where both the stock photo and title are extremely pixelated. The title especially is an eye sore.

What a great, absolutely amazing book! Derek and Alyssa have a one night stand, when he didn't know who she was. A couple of weeks later he's assigned as her bodyguard:) None of them is too happy and try to keep it professional, even though it's obvious they're attracted to each other. Derek has trouble believing Alyssa is not the supercilious, scandalous party girl she used to be, while Alyssa has been trying to move on with her life and gain the acceptance of her family. After some weeks of living close to her, Derek is willing to change his mind about her when she appears in public drugged again. Having attended rehab once before, everyone, including Derek, is ready to believe that Alyssa, the ultimate party girl, has relapsed back to her bad habits. Only Alyssa claims that she's not an addict anymore but someone drugged her drink on purpose. But what could that purpose be? And can Derek, the ultimate iceman, find it in his heart to trust someone after all those years?
Alyssa's family, is selling diamond jewelry and the background of this story is based on illegally mined African diamonds and dangerous arms dealers. There are a couple of pretty harsh scenes about the mine workers and tons of suspense that wouldn't let me put the book down. Derek as a hero was as great as the image of the model on the cover of the book:) He was a reserved, quite, unemotional man -a former sniper for the Army- with tons of passion and once he met Alyssa, his shields began to disintegrate. Alyssa's former life was the equivalent of Paris Hilton's: a wild party girl that made the news with her silly antics every day. However, when we meet her, she's already started to put that past behind her and lead a more meaningful life. Her more easy going and open personality are exactly what Derek needs and together they make a great couple. Though she's too ready to trust people she really shouldn't, she's not stupid and does have a spine of her own. As for Derek, what can I say? He's drop down gorgeous and the fact that he saves her life a couple of times make him a hero with capital H.

This is book two of the Gemini Series and I must admit i didn't really care for this story. The heroine Alyssa Miles is a spoiled trust fund baby, who has has spent her life in the spotlight, getting in trouble, drugs, finding new ways to draw attention to herself, with no real direction in her life, and upset that no one takes are seriously (oh gee I wonder why).
Derek Taggert is assigned security for a charity event and spots the sexy Alyssa. Now Derek doesn't know who she is, but he does know she is sexy as hell, so he pursues her. So they spend the night together, have hot steamy sex. Alyssa leaves before Derek wakes up and tries to sneak back into her father's and step mothers house without them noticing (so she doesn't have to do the walk of shame). As she tries to sneak into her room without being seen or heard she hears gun shots. she races to their bedroom and finds them both dead. It appears her step mother shot her dad and killed herself.
Gemini is hired by Alyssa's uncle to "babysit" Alyssa basically. Derek doesn't want to be near Alyssa (he is still very much attracted to her, but doesn't respect her much) and Alyssa doesn't want Derek watching her every move. My issue was mainly with Alyssa, she let everyone step all over her basically. She didn't seem to have much self respect and i had problems having any sympathy for a misunderstood spoiled trust fund baby. With that in mind I couldn't see the attraction Derek had for her, not the romantic attraction anyway. I could see why he would have to have sex with her, but not much else. I couldn't feel their attraction and I didn't like Alyssa at all.
The suspense part of this book was pretty good, it centered around blood diamonds, greed and murder. A lot of murders actually, it felt like every few chapters someone else was being killed in some way.

I may have found my next favorite romantic suspense author. I couldn't turn the pages of this book fast enough. Very well written and pretty well plotted. The characters were believable and their relationship seemed real. I am looking forward to reading about the other 2 brothers. For once I was okay with reading about a spoiled rich girl. She seemed very real charming and vulnerable. Just a quick review. I'll try to fill this out later.

Here's a lesson from this book: Don't trust anyone!!!!!
Good very good! I really liked it. The story was good, a bit harsh here and there, but I appreciated the insight about diamond mines and what really happened there.
At the beginning I had some trouble with the heroine, who seemed to be really vapid and bi-dimensional, but she really improved. He, I want a man like this. Always there for you! ;)
The HEA was really a bit of tale side but good!

Caught was very good and Kept is starting off even better...
And it finished with 5 stars! It was a romantic suspense with steam. Felt like a Shannon McKenna or a Linda Howard book. Excellent entry in a great series.

นี่เป็นหนังสือเล่มที่อยากอ่านมากที่สุดของเดือนนี้เลยค่ะ แต่ก็ดันเป็นเล่มที่มาถึงเมืองไทยช้าที่สุดจนได้ ดังนั้นพอได้มาอยู่ในครอบครองจึงรีบอ่านทันที
แต่แม็กซ์ก็ยังงงตัวเองนิดนึงนะคะว่า ทำไม้ทำไมหนังสือชุดนี้ถึงกลายเป็นเรื่องที่เราอยากอ่านมากขนาดนี้ได้ ทั้งที่ตอนอ่านเล่มแรกใน ชุดจบไป เราก็ยังไม่ได้เกิดอาการเครซี่คลั่งไคล้เล่มนี้อะไรนัก แต่อย่างช้า ๆ และไม่รู้ตัว พี่น้องตระกูลแท็คเกิร์ตก็แทรกเข้ามาอยู่ในใจเราได้ซะงั้น

หนังสือเล่มนี้เป็นเล่มที่สองในชุด The Gemini Men ซึ่งเล่าเรื่องราวของสามศรีพี่น้องตระกูลแท็คเกิร์ตที่ร่วมกันก่อตั้งบริษัท รักษาความปลอดภัยที่ชื่อว่าเจมมิไน แต่ไม่มีความจำเป็นต้องอ่านเล่มแรกก่อนนะคะ ก็สามารถอ่านเรื่องนี้รู้เรื่องได้ เพียงแต่ถ้าคุณอ่านเล่มนี้ก่อน มันอาจจะเป็นการสปอลย์เล่มแรกไปบ้างเล้กน้อย
หนังสือเปิดเรื่องขึ้นที่งานเลี้ยงเพื่อการกุศลสุดหรูที่เดเร็ค แท็คเกิร์ตพี่ชายคนรองทำหน้าที่รักษาความปลอดภัยอยู่ เดเร็คเป็นคนที่ขรึมที่สุดในบรรดาสามพี่น้อง เขาค่อนข้างเก็บตัว และไม่ได้มีเสน่ห์เหลือเฟือเหมือนน้องชายฝาแฝดอย่างเอธาน (พระเอกเรื่อง Caught ซึ่ง เป็นเล่มแรกในชุด) ในขณะเดียวกันก็ไม่ได้เต็มไปด้วยพลังเอาจริงเอาจังอย่างแดนนี่พี่ชายคนโต (ซึ่งจะเป็นพระเอกเล่มสาม) เดเร็คเคยเป็นนักแม่นปืนในกองทัพ และเขาก็เงียบขรึม และใจเย็นอย่างที่นักแม่นปืนเป็นกัน
จนกระทั่งเขาได้ทำสิ่งที่ตัวเองก็ไม่คิดว่าจะทำ ด้วยการพาลูกสาวเศรษฐีที่อยากได้อะไรก็ต้องได้อย่างอลิสา มิลล์กลับบ้าน และด้วยเหตุผลบางอย่างอลิสาต้องการเขา และเดเร็คก็พบว่าตัวเองไม่อาจปฏิเสธเธอได้ ทั้งคู่มีความสัมพันธ์ที่คิดว่าจะเป็นเพียงแค่ชั่วข้ามคืน
แต่เหตุการณ์ไม่คาดฝันก็เกิดขึ้น เมื่อพ่อของอลิสาถูกฆ่าตาย และลุงของเธอเรียกตัวเดเร็คให้มาเป็นบอดี้การ์ดคอยดูแลหญิงสาวที่มีแต่ข่าว ฉาวโฉ่คนนี้ และนั่นทำให้เขาได้รู้จักเธอมากขึ้น และเรียนรู้ว่า ภายใต้ใบหน้าในสวยงามของอลิสา ก็ยังมีผู้หญิงที่แท้จริง ผู้หญิงที่มีเลือดเนื้อ และต้องการความรักอย่างมาก

ปกติแม็กซ์จะไม่ค่อยชอบนางเอกอย่างอลิสานะคะ เธอค่อนข้างอ่อนแอในทางอารมณ์ ในหลายครั้งเรารู้สึกว่าเธอโง่และซื่อเกินไป แถมยังมีประเด็นขัดใจที่เราไม่ชอบมาก ๆ นั่นก็คือ เรื่องราวที่นางเอกแสนจะดีดี้ดี แต่คนรอบข้างกลับไม่มีใครชอบเธอเลยสักคน แม็กซ์ไม่ชอบพล็อตแนวนี้ เพราะความเชื่อส่วนตัวว่า ถ้าเราเป็นคนดี คนอื่นก็จะต้องเห็นความดี แต่ในกรณีนี้ ดูเหมือนทุกคนจะเกลียดอลิสามาก เกลียดที่เธอสวย เกลียดที่เธอร่ำรวย เกลียดที่มีชื่อเสียง ทั้งที่ในความประพฤติแล้ว อลิสาไม่ได้มีอะไรเลวร้าย ทำให้แม็กซ์ตั้งข้อสงสัยถึงความแคบของตัวละคร (ที่เกลียดนางเอก)
แต่ในความอ่อนแอของอลิสา เธอกลับมีความเข้มแข็งบางอย่าง ที่ำทำให้เธอมีเสน่ห์ในตัวเอง ไม่ได้ดูเป็นตัวละครที่ร้องโอดโอยให้แต่พระเอกขี่ม้าขาวมาช่วย (จริงอยู่นะคะในเ่ล่มนี้ สุดท้ายแล้วก็เป็นเดเร็คนั่นแหละที่ต้องออกโรงมาช่วยเธอทุกครั้ง แต่การดำเนินเรื่องกลับไม่ทำให้แม็กซ์รู้สึกสิ้นหวังกับความไม่ได้เรื่องขอ งอลิสา) ส่วนหนึ่งคงเป็นเพราะทุกเรื่องเลวร้ายที่เกิดขึ้นกับเธอ อลิสาไม่ได้แสวงหามัน อันที่จริงเธอไม่ได้ประพฤติตนดั่งเช่นนางเอกที่โง่จนสมควรตาย เธออาจเดินเข้าไปหาอันตรายเอง แต่ทุกครั้งมันมีคำอธิบายที่แม็กซ์ยอมรับได้
แม็กซ์ไม่แน่ใจว่า คนที่ไม่ได้อ่านเรื่อง Caught จะเข้าใจความเปลี่ยนแปลงของเดเร็คมากนัก เพราะในเล่มนี้เดเร็คเปลี่ยนตั้งแต่ครั้งแรกที่ได้พบกับอลิสา เขาไม่ใช่ตัวเขาที่คนอ่านรู้จั��� (แต่มันก็ไม่ใช่การเปลี่ยนจากหน้ามือเป็นหลังมือนะคะ มันเป็นการเปลี่ยนชนิดที่ชายซึ่งตกหลุมรักเท่านั้นจะเป็นได้) ทำให้คนที่ไม่ได้อ่านเล่มแรกในชุด ที่ยังไม่เคยรู้จักคาแร็คเตอร์ของเดเร็ค จะเข้าใจความเปลี่ยนแปลงนี้ได้ดีนัก แต่สำหรับคนที่อ่าน การได้เห็นชายที่ดูเหมือนจะไม่แยแสอะไร ออกอาการร้อนรนจะเป็นจะตายเพียงเพราะผู้หญิงคนเดียว มันก็สนุกดีค่ะ
คู่ของเดเร็คและอลิสาไม่ใช่คู่พระนางที่ถึงกับยอดเยี่ยมในโลกโรแมนซ์หรอก นะคะ แต่เป็นคู่ที่เหมาะสมกันดี นางเอกที่เปรียบเสมือนปารีส ฮิลตันในโรแมนซ์ กับพระเอกที่ไม่เคยอ่านข่าวสังคมมาพบกัน แม็กซ์เข้าใจถึงแรงดึงดูดของความแตกต่างในคู่นี้ (และมันเป็นพล็อตที่เจมี่คนแต่งใช้อีกแล้ว)
ในส่วนของประเด็นการสืบสวน แม็กซ์ไม่ชอบวิธีการที่ให้คนร้าย (สปอยล์) มาคลั่งไคล้อลิสาจนเพี้ยน มันเป็นพล็อตโบราณมากที่นักเขียนชอบใช้กัน จนแม็กซ์รู้สึกว่า มันโบไปแล้วน่ะ ไม่เข้าใจว่าทำไม นางเอกมีดีตรงไหน ถึงต้องมารุมคลั่งกันอย่างนี้ มันน่ารำคาญพอ ๆ กับการเขียนให้นางเอกเป็นคนดี แต่ไม่มีใครรักเธอเลยแหละ
อาการขาดความรักของนางเอกเป็นส่วนที่ทำให้แม็กซ์ไม่ค่อยมั่นใจในโรแมนซ์ของ ทั้งอลิสาและเดเร็คนัก เพราะเราไม่แน่ใจว่า ที่เธอเลือกเดเร็คเป็นเพราะเขาเป็นผู้ชายคนแรกที่รักเธอ หรือเพราะเขาเป็นผู้ชายที่เธอรัก แต่ในขณะเดียวกัน แม็กซ์ค่อนข้างเชื่อว่าอลิสาเป็นผู้หญิงที่เดเร็คต้องการ และเหมาะกับเขาอย่างยิ่ง เพราะมันทำให้เขากระทำในสิ่งที่ตัวเองไม่เคยทำมาตลอดชีวิต
โดยรวมหนังสือเล่มนี้เป็นเล่มต่อที่น่าอ่าน และยิ่งทำให้แม็กซ์อยากอ่านเล่มสุดท้าย (หรือเปล่า ไม่แน่ใจนะคะ คิดว่าถ้าขายดี คนแต่งคงจะขยายชุดเป็นแน่) ที่เป็นเรื่องราวของแดนนี่ พี่ชายคนโดตที่แหกกฎการเป็นพี่ชายคนโตทั้งหมด ด้วยการที่ไม่ใช่คนที่บ้าความรับผิดชอบ และห่ามน่าดู

เล่มนี้ปมปริศนาและการสืบสวนเดาได้ง่ายมากๆ ขาดความซับซ้อนของเนื้อเรื่องไปหน่อย โดยเฉพาะคิมเบอร์ลีที่เรารู้ว่านังนี่ต้องร้ายลึกๆแน่ๆ ทำให้ความสนุกลดลงไปบางส่วน แต่ก็ได้บทรักอันร้อนแรงที่เพิ่มขึ้นมา(มาก)จากเล่มที่แล้ว จนบางครั้งเราถึงกับอุทานออกมาว่า ... ฮะ ! อีกแล้วหรอ

*sigh* Had high expectations for "Kept" by Jami Alden...after all, I've thoroughly enjoyed (and devoured) a number of her other books. Unfortunately, I had to force myself to finish this. I don't know...Maybe it's because I've had it up to here with privileged, vapid, self-involved, airheaded, Kardashianesque celebutantes who have the IQ of my shoe size...which pretty much sums up our heroine, Alyssa Miles. Sure, Alden goes out of her way to have hero Derek Taggart say how different (ie: intelligent, sweet, funny, strong) she is from her (now rehabilitated) drug-addicted, beaver-flashing public image; but Alyssa just came off as an irritating, pathetic, spineless, desperate-for-love twit. Granted, Alyssa turns her life around at the end, becomes a productive member of society and even does a very charitable, heroic deed. But for me it was too-little-too-late. I'd disliked her for so much of the book that I just couldn't warm up to her and give her a pass. I kept hoping Derek would find someone -- anyone! -- else to fall in love with. Which leads me to my next gripe...
Other than the Taggart family, every character was despicable -- from Alyssa's cancer-ridden mother who expected Alyssa to pay for her medical bills and a bigger condo so she could entertain rich folks; to her resentful, bitter, amoral assistant (yeah, it's tough work keeping track of all those parties Alyssa attends) who would sell out her own mother if the price was right; to an ends-justifies-the-means reporter whose humanity and moral compass had been severely eroded after years of being in the trenches. *sigh*
All I can say is THANK GOODNESS I'VE READ OTHER BOOKS BY JAMI ALDEN BEFORE I PICKED UP THIS ONE...Otherwise, I would have written her off and not had the pleasure of reading some of her other well-written, likable, kick-ass books.

Kept is Jami Alden’s second book in The Gemini Men series.
Derek Taggart is an elite ex-military sniper turned private investigator for security agency Gemini. Working at a fancy event, he meets Alyssa Miles. Without knowing who she is, he ends up taking her home and spending an amazing night with her.
Alyssa is a socialite and a paparazzi darling. Tired of having every detailed of her life exposed in the media, she is now working hard towards changing her image. The first step in her makeover is developing a relationship with her father. She does this by putting her fame to good use as the model for his diamond marketing campaign.
Initially, the allure of Derek not knowing who she is provides Alyssa a departure from the constant attention, but its short lived after her father is killed and Derek is assigned as her body guard.
There is a side story on the origins of blood diamonds. Ms. Alden has done her research on this topic and provides a realistic and compelling view of the many lives touched by the 'stone'.
I enjoyed reading this book. It constantly ‘kept’ my attention because it had so many facets. It was a love story, a murder-mystery and a family drama. This book was well written, compelling story, a great summer read!

2nd book in the series. Derek, the hero, got on my nerves through most of the book. Only because he was to scared to admit his feelings, and was at times kind of cruel to Alyssa. He manages to totally redeem himself towards the end of this book.
There is a bit more suspense in "Kept" than was in "Caught", the book first in the series.

I didn't like it as much as the first, but it was still a good read! The heroine was a little hard to relate to! The hero was a jerk, but I like jerky hero's so it worked for me! The bad guys were definitely more sinister in this one, much more suspenseful then the first!

So, this one could have been better then the first book. It actually is for most of the time.

The plot is more interesting and more dark. The villians are not as easily structured as the ones from the first book. Not that I was suprised by any means, but still, they were just better written then in book 1.
The development of the romance between the two main characters is stretched out over more than 4 days, and therefor more believable and a sweet read.
So all seems well, until you get a LOT of sentences like this:
"Tasting your pussy is almost as good as fucking it. Your hot peach juice running over my tongue. I want to drink up every last drop"
Or in other words, all is well until they have sex....
There are just sooo many cringe worthy sentences during sex scenes that could have been so hot. The setting of them is better than in book 1, the chemistry is even hotter than in book 1. But for some reason the author had the urge to come up with so many weird stuff that goes through Dereks head, or comes out of his mouth, that I just couldn't enjoy myself. They can really, really turn you off.
Also it is kind of hard, to keep yourself from wanting to slap Alyssa at one point. Derek has really screwed up at one point and she just doesn't react like I would have wished. Show some backbone woman!
And the end scene is soooo cheesy. Derek couldn't have showed us often enough, that he is not the talking, and more of the showing type. He has problems talking about his feelings and then there he just says the most cheesiest things in front of reporter to prove something to her. The one time he opens up and talks about very private things, he does it in front of a reporter although she hates that the world has to know everything about her? Well what a romantic gesture....
I would have liked to give it a better rating than book 1, but those things just bugged me too much :(

I stay away from trade size romance books as a whole. When I picked up this proof copy I had no idea that it was to be a trade book. I'm glad I wasn't paying attention, because I actually liked the forthright story. The mysteries and hidden agendas are spelled out for you, leaving the author time to concentrate on the relationship forming between the two main characters. I wasn't quite expecting to know who-done-it the page after it was done, but it was still fun to see the characters get to figure it all out.
Here's the general plot setup:
Derek Taggert gives a rich pretty little socalite a ride home after meeting her at a party where he's running the security team. They share an unforgettable night, then she's running off to her parents home to catch some sleep before a morning meeting. When she arrives there, she finds her father (owner of Van Weldt Jewelers) and stepmother have been killed. The police close the case quickly but Alyssa may have seen something that lends a naging doubt to the conclusion.
Alyssa's family hires Gemini Security, and specifically want Derek to be the one to make sure Alyssa keeps a low profile. Derek has since learned that Alyssa isn't just any little rich girl, but is a tabloid sensation with a wild party girl reputation. She's also the main face of the Van Weldt Jewelers latest advertising campagne.
Derek's already serious trust issues come crashing down, but his darned feelings for Alyssa keep sneaking up on him.
When Alyssa suddenly starts acting like her old party girl self, Derek must either take things at face value, or admit that she is in a lot more trouble than she can handle.
