STRANGE TALES #150-158 (Hydra Lives!)

This storyline is one of the few from Stan Lee’s original “Nick Fury: Agent of SHIELD” run in Strange Tales that actually adds up to more than commercial filler; don’t get me wrong, I like Fury as a character, but here he struggles to be the centerpiece of an engaging storyline as opposed to just episodic filler, with the real gem being the Doctor Strange stories. Not only that, but a general flaw with all Fury’s SHIELD stories is that they feel so detached from the original Howling Commando stories that made him special in the first place.

But THIS story is brilliant; it effectively serves as a direct sequel to the original Sergeant Fury and His Howling Commandos #1-6 , which I love. So this effectively solves THAT issue, and actually gives the characters room to grow; by having such direct callbacks to that earlier comic book storyline, it allows us to reflect on how much Fury has changed and evolved since that earlier story! Especially when exact narrative events from that story get referenced and mirrored in really brilliant ways here, especially with returning characters (sh… no spoilers).

Lee also uses this opportunity to examine the darker side of Nick Fury, by begging the shocking question of whether he was every really any better than the Nazis or HYDRA soldiers he fought back in WWII. Perhaps they live metaphorically through him; through SHIELD. SHIELD appears to be the good guys, but this story suggests appearances can be deceiving. Very powerful political undertones about neo-fascism are at the center of this story, and its insanely ironic and ahead of its time given what America has been like since 2016.

A powerful political metaphor about history repeating itself, and a well needed departure from this character’s USUAL run of the mill stories.

Dr. Strange. One bizarre arc ends, and another starts but at least it answers about something left unfinished from the Epic vol 1 collection.
