Way. Too. Much. Internal. Dialogue. Nothing much happens. There's a lot of the MC sitting and thinking, and thinking...and thinking. The writing wasn't terrible or anything, but there was a lack of depth and some grammar issues here and there. I skimmed a lot of the book and still got the gist. Wasn't a fan of the love scenes, either. A bit too mechanical or strangely worded, which took away the sexiness. The blurb made the series sound interesting, but the plot fell flat. Not my type of read.

I am now, and have always been a fast reader, and normally I can finish a series of this size in hours. However, the torture of having to continuously stay in this girl's head throughout this book drove me so crazy that I found myself having to keep putting down this story over a period of several days as I tried to force myself to read it. In the end, I had no choice but to tap out!

Maid For Him is a 5 part series by Nella Tyler. I was going through my TBR pile and saw this series had been there for quite a few years, unread. So, I reacquainted myself with the blurb and was immediately interested and quite excited to begin reading. Unfortunately, I am left disappointed by the story, and it definitely didn’t live up to my expectations- which was really unfortunate- because the premise held such promise, the story really could have been amazing. The writing itself wasn’t bad as such, just missed the mark on quite a few levels. I took so many notes while reading the 5 books, that my review would turn into an essay if I were to mention everything. So, let me try to condense things a little. I will start at the beginning to try and explain myself.
As I stated earlier, the series is made up of 5 novella length books, but it is, in essence, one story/book divided into 5 parts. The blurb is the same for each book- no new information to be had in any of them. Also, each book picks up exactly, to the minute, where the previous one left off. So, why not leave it as one book? That’s why I am reviewing the 5 books as if they were just one….
The characters could have been really interesting and endearing, but really required more depth, development, and growth- to make the reader really invest in them and their story. Yes, they were attractive, and very attracted to one another- but they lacked real chemistry, passion, and sexual tension. Even the ’romance’ part of the story was a bit lacklustre. The story was written with erotic moments/intimate scenes- and I use the term ‘erotic’ quite loosely- because the sex scenes either ‘faded out’ as things were heating up, or when they did continue the whole way through, they just seemed awkward, as if the author wasn’t completely comfortable writing them- and the wording was a little ‘old-fashioned’ and noticeably different to the rest of the story. It may have been better to have left them out completely.
The story was entirely from Molly’s perspective- which was quite tedious by the time I got to the last book. I would like to have heard from Luke too, and get his point of view on things- hopefully giving the reader a much needed break from Molly’s never ending internal dialogue. There was more time spent in Molly’s head wondering, over thinking things, discussing things, and telling us everything- than there was on the ‘actual’. As an example, Molly is asked a simple question and it takes several pages (8 paragraphs) before she gives her answer, because all that time was spent revealing inner dialogue. I would have preferred more ‘doing’ and less ‘telling’. It really distracted from the story and disrupted the flow.
Ms. Tyler tried to add interest and give the story some tension, but again missed the mark for me- and felt a little like this: they meet, added drama, book one ends, then book two begins, they make up, added drama, book two ends, then book three begins, they make up…… you get the idea. The drama felt a little ‘forced’, which was quite frustrating. I felt the story would have been better served to have had one ‘big’ drama/underlying tension/intensity, than to have had so many little issues that weren’t at all riveting. The final ‘big reveal’ was also a little disappointing- the idea itself was quite clever, but was let down in the delivery. It could have been quite thrilling and suspenseful- but Ms. Tyler failed to capture the opportunity that her ‘seed idea’ truly held.
I really, really wanted to love this story- but I really was forcing myself to read the series in its entirety. I could go on with other issues, but I think I have made my point. As this is some of her earlier work, I would read another of her later books just to see if she has finally found her ‘groove’- because as I said at the beginning, the potential is there!!
I went into a lot of detail with this review not to cause any hurt, I only mean to give an honest assessment of what I experience, and to hopefully be constructive, I really don’t mean to offend. In fact, I think that if Ms. Tyler were to do a bit of re-working /tweaking of this story, it could be fantastic!

Thank you, Ms. Tyler!

Ok read

Sex scenes. No foul language. Interesting twist with rich father involved in insider trading. Molly going back and forth for many pages, trying to make decisions about Luke.
