Murphy, Mary. Mouse is Small. Candlewick Press, 2017. $7.99. Content: G. BOARD BOOK. A charming little board book with just a few words on each page and a hilarious ending that will make little children laugh. Mouse is small and turtle is bigger, pelican and zebra are even bigger, and elephant is biggest of all. Spider may be the smallest but it’s also the scariest.
Children will be drawn into the different shaped pages and peekaboo hole for spider. The illustrations are quite simple, but very recognizable, with solid color backgrounds. Little hands will be eager to read over and over again. Pre-K - ADVISABLE. Samantha Hastings, MA, MLS. https://kissthebook.blogspot.com/2017...
Another charmer from Mary Murphy about sizes and surprises. I use many of her books for storytime and this is will not be an exception. The only drawback for using it in storytime is the size, as I would prefer something a bit larger for group settings. It is wonderful for one on one readings. Young children will be attracted to the bright colors and the different sized pages.
A good book that elicits some gurgles and smiles from the baby. I like that the animals in the book are not your typical barn animals, and that babies are introduced to other creatures like pelicans and zebras. Our baby is only a few months, so the ending with the spider does not yet make sense to him.
One great thing about this book is that the pages are curved and staggered in length, which makes it easier for the child to grasp the edge of the page and turn it. My one-year-old also enjoyed the tiny hole on the last page that shows the spider.
This book is great for talking about comparing size between two objects. The children start to try to compare to objects in the classroom and connect those objects back to the book. Our older child can talk about how big they think the elephant is and how small the mouse is.
Adorable book that has readers comparing and contrasting sizes. Mouse is small, but a lot of animals are bigger (pelican, zebra, elephant...) but is there an animal even smaller than mouse? This is a great (and funny!) book for young toddlers and babies.
My toddler really enjoyed this little book with its easy-to-turn page flaps of increasing sizes and a little finger hole for the spider. It was a nice wee plot, too. We both enjoyed it.
