His novels, essays, and short stories have been best-sellers in Japan and internationally, with his work translated into 50 languages and having sold millions of copies outside Japan. His work spans genres including science fiction, fantasy, and crime fiction, and has become known for his use of magical realist elements. His official website cites Raymond Chandler, Kurt Vonnegut and Richard Brautigan as key inspirations to his work, while Murakami himself has named Kazuo Ishiguro, Cormac McCarthy and Dag Solstad as his favourite currently active writers. Murakami has also published five short story collections, including First Person Singular (2020), and non-fiction works including Underground (1997), an oral history of the Tokyo subway sarin attack, and What I Talk About When I Talk About Running (2007), a memoir about his experience as a long distance runner.
His fiction has polarized literary critics and the reading public. He has sometimes been criticised by Japan's literary establishment as un-Japanese, leading to Murakami's recalling that he was a "black sheep in the Japanese literary world". Meanwhile, Murakami has been described by Gary Fisketjon, the editor of Murakami's collection The Elephant Vanishes (1993), as a "truly extraordinary writer", while Steven Poole of The Guardian praised Murakami as "among the world's greatest living novelists" for his oeuvre.

আমি আসলে এই বইটি পড়িনি। পড়েছি, "হারুকি মুরাকামির নির্বাচিত গল্প, অনুবাদ: স্বপ্না ভট্টাচার্য"। গুডরিডসে বইটি খুঁজে না পাওয়ায় এটা তালিকাভুক্ত করলাম।
বইটিতে আছে মাত্র পাঁচটি গল্প। The mirror, UFO in Kushiro, The iceman, The Seventh Man, Super-frog saves Tokyo, Man eating cat.
মুরাকামির লেখনী পরিচিত কোনো লেখকের ধরণের সাথে যায় না। গল্পগুলো পড়তে পড়তে মনে হচ্ছিলো, দূর থেকে ভেসে আসা কোনো সুর শুনছি। অপরিচিত সুর। যতোই আগাচ্ছি শব্দের তীব্রতা বাড়ছে। আগাতে আগাতে একসময় আবিষ্কার করলাম, এতো আমার অতি পরিচিত সুর!
মুরাকামির চরিত্রদের জানতে গিয়ে একসময় বিহবল হয়ে আবিষ্কার করা, "এতো আমিই!" মুরাকামি "The mirror" গল্পে যেমন তাঁর নায়ককে দাঁড়া করিয়ে দেন আয়নার সামনে, নায়কের মুখ দিয়ে বলিয়ে নেন, "পৃথিবীতে সবচেয়ে ভয়ের জিনিস হল আমার নিজের সত্তা", ঠিক তেমনই বাকি সব গল্পে ও প্লট বুঝতে গিয়ে, চরিত্র অনুধাবন করতে গিয়ে বার বার খুঁজে পেয়েছি নিজেকে। এযেনো আরেকজনের ভেতর ডুব দিয়ে নিজেকে খুঁজে পাওয়া।

প্রথমেই বলে নিতে চাই অনুবাদক দিলওয়ার হাসানের কাজ সম্পর্কে - এক কথায় অসাধারণ। ছোটগল্পের অনুবাদ সাধারণত খুব সতর্কতার সাথে করতে হয় - একদিকে যেমন গল্পের আবেদন নষ্ট হতে দেয়া যায়না অন্যদিকে অনুবাদের ভাব ও শৈলীর কথা ও মাথায় রাখতে হয়। এই দুদিক থেকে চিন্তা করলে বইটা অসাধারণ।
আর দ্বিতীয় কথা, হারুকি মুরাকামির লেখার ধরন আর আবেগ খুব জটিল আর গভীর। অনুবাদক সফলতার সাথেই সেই ভাব এবং আবেগ ধরে রেখেছেন।
হারুকি মুরাকামির অনুবাদ বাংলায় হচ্ছে বেশ ক' বছর হল। তাঁর উপন্যাসগুলো একের পড় এক আসছে। কিন্তু আমরা পাঠকরা জানতাম না যে মুরাকামি ছোটগল্প লেখায় ও ওস্তাদ। কাফকা যেমন অনবদ্য কিছু ছোটগল্প লিখে গেছেন ,যেগুলো আজো আমাদের ভাবায়। ঠিক তেমনি মুরাকামির এই গল্প গুলো আমাদের খুব ভাবায়। আমাদের এমন এক জায়গায় নিয়ে যায় - যেখানে আমরা ব্যক্তির নিজস্ব সত্তার সাথে লড়াইয়ের মত কঠিন আর দুঃসাধ্য বিষয় দেখি - এবং অবাক হই - এবং মুগ্ধ হই এই ভেবে যে উপন্যাস আমাদের কতটা শিক্ষিত করে পুরানো আবেগকে নতুন করে দেখতে।

হারুকি মুরাকামি আমার অন্যতম প্রিয় লেখক। সহজ শব্দে গভীর কথা প্রকাশের স্টাইল আমার কাছে বেশ ভাল লাগে। এই কারণে এই বইয়ের কিছু কিছু জায়গায় আমি হতাশ হয়েছি। তার পরেও আমি প্রচেষ্টাকে সাধুবাদ জানাই।

"ম্যান উথাউট উইমেন", "ব্লাইন্ড উইলো স্লিপিং উইম্যান" এর থেকে ধার করা বেশিরভাগ গল্পের অনুবাদ হচ্ছে "হারুকি মুরাকামির শ্রেষ্ঠগল্প" শিরোনামের বইটি। মুরাকামির পুরো গল্পকে অনুবাদের চাইতেও যেটা বেশি কঠিন সেটা হচ্ছে অদ্ভুত শিরোনামগুলোকে নিজস্ব ভাষায় অর্থ ঠিকঠাক রেখে নাম দেওয়া। এ বইয়ের অনূদিত শিরোনামগুলো খুব একটা পছন্দসই নয়। তবে যেটা জরুরি, সেটা হচ্ছে অনুবাদও আমার কাছে ওতটাও সুবিধার লাগেনি। আরো ঝরঝরে হতে পারতো!

অনুবার আরো একটু ঝরঝরা হলে আরো বেশি সহজবোধ্য হত। বিশেষত কাউন্সিলর এর বাংলা পরামর্শদাতা করায় একটা গল্পের অর্ধেক মজাই নষ্ট হয়ে গেছে।

দুর্দান্ত অনুবাদ। অন্তত হারুকি মুরাকামির গোটা পাঁচজনের অনুবাদ পড়ার পর বলতে পারি। কোনো স্বীকৃতি না দিলেও, বাংলাদেশে দিলওয়ার হাসানই বোধ হয় বৃহৎ বাংলাভাষী পাঠকের কাছে হারুকি মুরাকামিকে বিস্তৃতভাবেই পরিচিত করেছেন। যেমন তিনি আইজাক বাশেবিস সিংগার'কে তিনি পরিচিত করেছেন। হারুকি মুরাকামি অনুবাদের যত্ন বোঝার জন্য এই বই কাজে লাগান যেতে পারে। যেমন সর্ববাংলায় অভিজিৎ মুখার্জির জাপানিজ থেকে অনুবাদকে চিন্তা করা যায়। প্যাশনেট এন্ড টাফ প্রফেশনাল ট্রানস্লেশন।
