Who do you call when things are coming out of your dreams and trying to kill you? Or when your daughter is cursing in Latin and walking like a spider? Or when your dog keeps screaming at you to strangle your neighbors? Doctor Strange, of course. He's the only person standing between us and the forces of darkness, but has he been paying his tab? Every act of magic has a cost and Jason Aaron (Thor, Original Sin) and Chris Bachalo (Uncanny X-Men) are going to put Stephen Strange through hell to even the scales.

Jason Aaron grew up in a small town in Alabama. His cousin, Gustav Hasford, who wrote the semi-autobiographical novel The Short-Timers, on which the feature film Full Metal Jacket was based, was a large influence on Aaron. Aaron decided he wanted to write comics as a child, and though his father was skeptical when Aaron informed him of this aspiration, his mother took Aaron to drug stores, where he would purchase books from spinner racks, some of which he still owns today.

Aaron's career in comics began in 2001 when he won a Marvel Comics talent search contest with an eight-page Wolverine back-up story script. The story, which was published in Wolverine #175 (June 2002), gave him the opportunity to pitch subsequent ideas to editors.

In 2006, Aaron made a blind submission to DC/Vertigo, who published his first major work, the Vietnam War story The Other Side which was nominated for an Eisner Award for Best Miniseries, and which Aaron regards as the "second time" he broke into the industry.

Following this, Vertigo asked him to pitch other ideas, which led to the series Scalped, a creator-owned series set on the fictional Prairie Rose Indian Reservation and published by DC/Vertigo.

In 2007, Aaron wrote Ripclaw: Pilot Season for Top Cow Productions. Later that year, Marvel editor Axel Alonso, who was impressed by The Other Side and Scalped, hired Aaron to write issues of Wolverine, Black Panther and eventually, an extended run on Ghost Rider that began in April 2008. His continued work on Black Panther also included a tie-in to the company-wide crossover storyline along with a "Secret Invasion" with David Lapham in 2009.

In January 2008, he signed an exclusive contract with Marvel, though it would not affect his work on Scalped. Later that July, he wrote the Penguin issue of The Joker's Asylum.

After a 4-issue stint on Wolverine in 2007, Aaron returned to the character with the ongoing series Wolverine: Weapon X, launched to coincide with the feature film X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Aaron commented, "With Wolverine: Weapon X we'll be trying to mix things up like that from arc to arc, so the first arc is a typical sort of black ops story but the second arc will jump right into the middle of a completely different genre," In 2010, the series was relaunched once again as simply Wolverine. He followed this with his current run on Thor: God of Thunder.

After watching the movie, I have to admit that Doctor Strange become one of my favourite Superhero of all time.

It's Magic.. not Harry Potter magic, but more as different Dimensions, more scientific..
Yet it's still pretty much an amazing Urban Fantasy..

Now this comics really is one of the latest. Really grab my attention.. cause it's about the Unseen.

They've just been given their first glimpse of the UNSEEN THINGS that live in the shadows, of a whole spectrum of unimaginable existence.

Just that one glimpse is all it takes to drive the average person to the brink of madness.
If they only knew.

That's just wow.
In this volume you'll see how what we may call Evil Spirit or even Negative Energy can be just other dimensions Parasites.. like this old man that can't stand straight;

See how that changed when Doctor Strang deal with that;

That's weird.. and that's a real good urban fantasy.
And if Jason Aaron successfully grabbed my attention with his amazing story telling to start reading this series of comics, Chris Bachalo made an amazing job illustrate this Weird Story,
The Way of the Weird...

If you didn't watch the awesome movie yet, just do.
If you didn't you can know everything about the Doctor through this amazing story that concluded the back story of Doctor Strange in one page... that sums up pretty much the first third of the movie.

Well talk more about Doctor Strange in the later issues and the main volume.
Just give it a chance. If you're , like me, a crazy Harry Potter fan.. and Urban Fantasy selective reader.

If you don't know who Doctor Strange is... you will soon.

description

Me? I've been a huge fan of the character since my boys made me buy them the animated movie almost a decade ago. And I seriously must have watched it with them a billion times, because it was one of our go-to dvds for years. If you get the chance to watch it, do it.

description

So, yeah, the minute I heard that there was going to be a live action movie, I might have peed my pants a little.
{insert much internal screaming & flailing here}

description

Anyhoo, even thought I've searched, I haven't found a plethora of Doctor Strange titles that were super-duper awesome. If I had to recommend a couple, I'd go with The Oath & Beginnings and Endings...and that's kind of it.
I'm going to attempt to read the original stuff before the movie comes out, so wish me luck.
Anyway, I was hoping that this was going to knock my socks off.
Did it?
Um, it was a good 1st issue. I liked the way Stephen's origin story was taken care of in a montage of old panels. It was a different & cool way to address his backstory, and then just...move forward.

description

I also liked the tone of everything. Not all dank and gloomy, you know?
I think Chris Bachalo's art was a good choice, because it kept everything, not cute, but...well, less dark maybe?

description

As far as the story goes, it's just a 1st issue, so there's not much plot yet. You get a bit of glimpse into Strange's world, a peek at a few other magic users in his circle, and a nice dose of humor throughout. Overall, it was a win for me!

EL-YOO-VEE that first page: faded Silver Age panels with too many chunky blocks of text crammed into a page, over-explaining Doctor Strange’s fairly straightforward origins. In the foreground? One sentence caption boxes with Jason Aaron’s script, elegantly, efficiently and effectively laying out Strange’s origin story in far fewer words, much more quickly, indirectly (but deliberately) comparing his writing to Stan Lee’s and showing the gulf of quality between them while also spelling out (pun intended) that this is a different, modern Doctor Strange. It’s like that first page from All-Star Superman - a masterclass in writing origins.

Turn over and it’s a splash page. Monsters. Teddy bears. Moustache. Let’s get our magic on! Boom. Now THAT is how you write superhero comics!

Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo give us the first ongoing Doctor Strange series in years and this first issue is fan-bloody-tastic. I love that the opening scene is a house call, like doctors make, but it’s also this superhero-magic-action-sequence at the same time with Bachalo throwing stunning splash pages at us, one after another. It’s exciting, it’s fun, it sets the tone, it introduces you to the character - it’s perfect. Aaron and Bachalo in sync like you read about.

From there it’s an awesome ride through Doctor Stephen Strange’s world. We see how he sees reality, his local watering hole, and what he does to keep the world safe. Aaron’s Strange is a much less arrogant character than he’s sometimes written so he's more likeable but he's generally still quite morose - I don't think he smiled once in this issue. It's understandable though given the Hellblazer-esque angle where Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme with enormous power that comes with an equally massive price to pay - an angle I’m sure will come into play later in the series.

I love - and I’m gonna keep using that word because I loved this whole issue unreservedly! - the little details too like his payment for saving that kid’s life in the opening scene (it keeps coming back to community - so cool) and how his cape transforms into a raffish scarf. A quick word on the axe featured in all the promo art: it makes an appearance but it doesn’t play a huge part in the story (so far anyway). He wields it like a scalpel the surgeon he once was would use it, except against The Dread Dormammu, etc.

There are only indications of the main story in this first issue but there’s a backup (superbly drawn by Kevin Nowlan) included which develops the threat headed Strange’s way - and that looks great too! Jason Aaron writes really good villains and these guys look evil as shit!

Chris Bachalo’s art is wonderful - those splash pages that opened up the story were outstanding and he looks like he’s having fun drawing the weird interdimensional monsters plaguing our reality, unbeknownst to us. Love the outfit he gives Strange mixing practical work boots into his classic robes - and that cape! It’s constantly morphing, I don’t know how he does it - it’s a kind of magic? No sign of Wong yet so don’t know what he looks like now but the issue closes out in the Sanctum Sanctorum so I expect he’s right around the corner.

By the hoary hosts of Hoggoth, this is an excellent start to the new Doctor Strange series (and sure to get people excited about the forthcoming movie)! Jason Aaron and Chris Bachalo give Doctor Strange the best possible start with this issue - open your (third) eyes to this terrific new series!

When all the birds fly away in a hurry, get ready for a storm.

Magical creatures are appearing where they shouldn't and it's up to Dr. Strange and those like him to protect the world from such things.

I always find Dr. Strange's world a bit weird. Odd things happen around him all the time. I didn't find this issue fun just well, pardon the pun, strange. It's hard to explain, but let me just say I'm not much of a fan of the character as a whole or of this issue. I am intrigued to see how Dr. Strange performs on the big screen in the fall because I've generally found him to be a character I can't relate with.

I thought that this was a really good start/first issue, but I have to admit that I've never read any Doctor Strange before. My familiarity with Doctor Strange is mostly limited to Daredevil's interactions with him.

I think Aaron did a good job introducing the character of Doctor Strange as a human being that I care about, but I have to admit, he's pretty angsty, and somewhat reminiscent of other successful urban fantasy characters (Constantine, Dresden, etc). We are also immediately introduced to the big enemy in the first story arc.

I kept flip flopping back and forth between 4 and 5 stars, mostly because Strange really is an egotistical bastard who sort of deserves to be smacked one or two times. However, the plot was great and it has me hooked, so I shouldn't punish the story for having an imperfect, yet powerful, character. In fact, that lends to it.

I'm not sure how I feel about this series. It's a new title, artist and writer. I really enjoy Aaron's run on Thor, his take on this just doesn't feel like the Stephen Strange I have read before. Time will tell if that's a good or bad thing. I was unimpressed with the art.

Likes:

1) The opening page - the background panels are all a bit faded, and each is a scene from the original books. Nice touch.

2)The overall art "fits" the character. The original books were noted for being trippy, psychedelic and just plain weird...and there's a lot of that unconventional, all-over-the-page-and-odd-angles stuff going on here. I dig it, even though it's not always a style I enjoy.

3) "The Bar With No Doors" - yes, please, very cool. I like this angle. (One thing though... I dont known anything about that old guy's history, but I didnt get his hostility - that and the rabbit thing was all a bit out of the blue and disjointed for me).

4) I've no idea how we got from Secret Wars to this book, but then, they've done a good job of making sure you didnt need to.

Dislikes:
1) Doctor Strange - the main voice here is not very "Doctor Strange"-ish to me. I've always thought of this character as being a bit older, and more self-assured. Sure, he needs a touch of arrogance... but it's usually a more cold, clinical...calculating vibe, whereas here it's more of a Captain Kirk arrogance. I'm all for a "new take", but this guy doesnt really feel like "Doctor Strange" to me. This version is missing a bit of that detached aloofness that I think usually gives Strange a certain "gravitas". Big miss for me there.

2) He's also apparently been aged down some? I think it's maybe a tad too far. It could be that this is contributing to that voice and tone problem. Along with that mustache, with only minor adjustments this book could easily have been set in the 1970s and called "Kid Strange - the Early Years". :)

I honestly dont know if I'll pick up the next issue, and right now I'm leaning to "not". I was really looking forward to this book, but I'm a bit disappointed. I know the author has done strong work that I've liked - Aaron's first couple of arcs on Thor were great. But, then again, that book also suddenly fell apart for me, and very quickly. So... right now I'm not super inclined to get #2.

So stylish and cool. This is a highly effective first issue. One of the best DC or Marvel rebooted No. 1s I've ever read and certainly among the most fun. But while it manages to be a blast and to be colorful and even humorous, there is a menacing presence that genuinely creeps you out. Jason Aaron is the man... Everything the guy touches is magic. Maybe he's the sorcerer supreme?

Doctor Strange is introduced. You get a very brief introduction before thrown into action. If I hadn't known anything about Doctor Strange, I would have found this a bit off putting. You really get no background on him other then freak accident then boom he gets magical powers. The artwork is hit and miss. There are points where Doctor Strange is very young, then more suave, then more Asian. None of which is a bad thing, but when in a single issue unless this is part of the story line it can be another point to turn you off the series. For now, I am interested enough to try for another issue. The story line itself hints at bigger things to come which I like.

If you are a fan of Doctor Strange then you shouldn't be missing this series.

Absolutely incredible, this is exactly how you should be starting a new line of comics. The old, Silver Age panels slipped in under the new, modern and concise retelling of Doctor Strange's past had me immediately intrigued; it's such a slick way to honour the classics, while keeping the origins concise, and the story bumping along at a good pace.

It's that attention to presentation which has me so excited about this series. I love the full spreads, intermittently broken by panels to guide your gaze through the scene. There's always so much going on, and the chaotic nature of the story oozes out of the pages with the busy, colourful art. There's so many interesting, strange things going on between each page that it begs to savoured.

description

Story-wise, I'm pleased with the direction Doctor Strange seems to be going in. There's an almost Ghost Busters vibe going on with Stephen Strange's antics -- he's suave but goofy, powerful yet boyish. While there's not enough content to guess where the story will head in time, there's enough to assume that something terrible is just around the corner.

As far as the All New, All Different line of Marvel comics goes, this is THE story to be jumping on.

I just finished the battle for your sons soul. He should get better soon. - But ... you just sat there for 20min doing nothing! - The battle took place in another dimension.

New story arc with a less "know-it-all" Strange. It's less mystical and more Supernatural/occult than the ones I read before.

Loving the art work and story so far. This is a great return for the Sorcerer Supreme in his own series even if it took far too long for him to get it. This promises to be my favorite comic right next to Daredevil with the launch of the all new, all different Marvel.

This comic is amazing! I have zero history with this character and all the sudden I can't wait to see the movie! I really love the way the art is used along with the words to create an amazing story. I also love his librarian friend who shows up! This is on my top of the year list!

I do love when we see Strange's housecalls. I love the intersection of urban legends and magic in the Marvel universe. And I love seeing Wanda get to roast Strange as a friendly peer. I'm intrigued by this run! I don't love the art, though.

My first introduction to the character of Doctor Strange was through the recently released movie. Once that came out, I wanted to learn more about him, so I started reading the series. There is so much depth to Strange's character and I already love this series. Here's hoping that it continues to be amazing.

This is a 5 star for me, the story drew me in and kept me thrilled till the last page.

We follow Doctor Vincent Strange the sorcerer Supreme as he fights magical and mystical threats from other dimensions. The storyline is great so is the pencil work.

There's a suspense at the end of this book that made me beg for more. I'll make an effort to go through the whole series.
