A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.
Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.
Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.
Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.
Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.
Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.
He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.
This one is just a super short tv tie-in issue (written by Bendis!) for the new show coming out on Netflix in a few weeks.
It's not really something you need to read, but if you get a chance, it only takes 10 minutes to flip through it.
The art inside is nothing to get excited over, and the story is extremely simplistic. Still, if you're curious, why not? Jessica tracks down a thug who hasn't paid child support. He's in the hospital, because Daredevil beat his ass, so I guess we can look forward to some crossovers between those two shows. And, yes...this makes me happy!

Jessica Jones is a private detective, she's a woman and she's smart. She's at the hospital to interrogate a man who tells her that the Devil knocked him out. That Devil is none other than Daredevil, who roams the rooftops of Hell's Kitchen. Introductory comic of the Jessica Jones character and the Netflix series.
I am deeply offended by this issue. I like Brian Michael Bendis but this is his laziest attempt yet. Jessica Jones is such an amazing character, and for a comic that is suppose to get us introduced to her before the show, he could have done a much better job. Apparently it also introduces us to Daredevil and how they will interconnect in the future. I did not like how it was done, but I am glad that they will meet each other, maybe they'll buddy up. I guess what I am trying to say is, that this little piece was o unnecessary that I am ashamed to have read it.
Just read the Alias Omnibus, it is a million times better, and it prepares you mentally and physically for the show much better than this issue could ever even hope to.
I got nothing else to really say besides that it was free. Other than that, I thought this was a waste. This is the equivalent of 12 pages and you just find out more about Daredevil. I also don't know how or even if this ties into the other Jessica Jones 2016 comics or not. I was told this was more about the backstory to the Netflix tv version, but there was nothing added that didn't tell me about Jessica based on what I watched on tv.
Well this is super duper short, only a few pages really, but since I have been watching the show, I thought I would read it.
I love JJ's attitude. Really, love it so much. This short little story also showed the beginnings of a tie in to Netflix's Daredevil, which I think all fans will be eagerly awaiting in the shows.
Only reason for 4 instead of 5 stars is that I wish for something longer to give a little more of her background. While I know who she is and where she came from and all that, many people probably wont. I prequel/background issue would have been sweet.
Anyway, the new show is AMAZING and Marvel fans, or fans of a kick ass, anti-heroine should check it out!
Wow, this is shockingly uneventful. No plot, almost no superpowers, no explanation for anything that is happening, only a brief introduction to the Netflix's series characters. If you read the nice little tag on the cover saying "Also in this issue Daredevil", I better warn you that you're not getting a little extra Devilish action, he comes in mid issue, for no clear reason, beats up someone and leaves, that's it, the scene barely makes any sense. The entire 18 pages is a messy dialogue with no fundament and a medley of the show's characters (I'm pretty sure the nurse was Claire). Sure, it's free on Marvel Unlimited, but is it even worth your time? If you're curious do yourself a favour and just go watch the series, it's really good. P.S. David Tennant is the villian, you know you want to.
I didn't expect this to be so short but it has me even more excited to check out Netflix's Jessica Jones series. I picked this up on free comic book day as Jessica Jones is a character that's always intrigued me but I just haven't got around to check out the series or read the comics. This was a quick look into what I should expect and I loved it!
Cool, as a sort of introduction for the series (which I intend to catch up on eventually), but as an individual issue it was too short and didn't offer much in my opinion. Bendis is capable of much better, so I think my rating's not unfair at all.
This is a short 12 page single issue entrée for Jessica Jones, the reluctant superhero in the Marvel universe, the one who had walked away. After glimpses in the Defenders series and never before being exposed to the Alias series it was a jump to have a look at this entrée book although I was somewhat disappointed with the sheer unavailability of information and this booklet being just an advert flyer 12 pages too long with a view of Daredevil but almost no close up of JJ, the central character of this book and the series it represents. The darkness made me check my kindle a few times even on the app, whether my machines were doing a Zulu on me. I will try the full series or omnibus and hence reserve my final comments. Nothing to recommend here.
I really like the art, but the story felt meh and I'm a little uncomfortable with the fact that the bad guy checked out many stereotype of the bad black man and both of the heroes were white. This is promo for the Netflix series, but I don't think I'd recommend it to newbies to Jessica Jones.
He's always making some kind of appearance, one way or another. He also seems to get his ass handed to him every time, some how. Poor guy!
Anyway, this is a real quick read. The art was a little difficult to decipher at times, but I liked the references to the Netflix series. It was nice. Plus, it's always good to see Turk, even if he is only around for a few seconds before someone gives him hell.
It's a preview for a TV show that I was not even knew exist & I'm not interested at all. So as a graphic novel, it got that smooth introduction & it ended before we know who's who and what's going on. It feels like when you wanna sneeze and suddenly it's gone. The illustration is not up to my taste at all, tho the cover is quite pretty.
A neat little intro to the Netflix show, written by Jess's creator. It's just a taster, but the dialogue's spiffy and the art is gorgeous. I've already seen the first season of the show, but this does kick me towards reading the Alias run.
A short preview to tie in to the netflix show - it was too short i wanted more! The artwork is really good and I loved the line "why cant i ever make a smooth exit" from Jessica at the end lol
This was a free Comixology download from Marvel as part of a promotion for their upcoming Jessica Jones Netflix series. It's by the creative team from the comics Epix/616 universe version of Ms Jones, but this is the Marvel cinematic universe version of the character. If you feel you have to read it before watching the series, then by all means, it's free (for a limited time) and a quick read. But my recommendation would be to skip it. It adds nothing, and it feels every bit of the contractually obligated cross platform promotion that it very clearly is.
Great first issue by writer Brian Michael Bendis. Wasn't familiar with the character going in, and I'm very much looking forward to the series beginning on NetFlix. The inaugural season of Daredevil was very well executed, as I'm sure this series will do well. Nice to see a female lead role on television series' based on comic books...which is severely lacking these days. This will be going on my pull list.
A cheap cash-in on the Netflix series. Supposedly an introduction to the character Jessica Jones, half the pages are Daredevil beating up a random assortment of mobsters in a possible homage to Daredevil #1 from way back when. Just as well it's free-to-read on Marvel Unlimited. Paying for this would be pretty egregious.
The Netflix show will definitely be different from Alias and that's something that makes me more excited to watch it. I want to be surprised. Especially if there's any chance of a crossover with Daredevil.
Free short primer released to advertise the upcoming Netflix show. Naturally, Daredevil who has a season already there makes an appearance. The short story is a toned down version of the comic "Alias" and the artwork is the same as the main story in the short lived series.
Nice brief intro to the upcoming AKA: Jessica Jones series, set to begin in November, on Netflix. It's meant not to satisfy but whet the appetite, relate it to Daredevil and give you a peek at what to expect. Actually reminds me of all the teaser videos they've released so far.
