Michael Hilton was six years old when he fell into an unexplained coma. His mysterious powers emerged when he inexplicably awoke, forever changed. Unearthly creatures that once were hidden from view were no longer invisible to him. Like the creatures living incognito amongst the human race, so will Michael attempt to conceal from others his strange powers and abilities. But his ability to see creatures prowling in his world is just the tip of the iceberg.

"The characters pull you right in and the imagery becomes so real that you feel like you are part of the book. There were times when I found myself outside, searching the trees for Setras (read the book- you’ll get it) and keeping an eye on the squirrels as they ran past me. " -Candice L.
Welcome my lovely Reader! I’m very glad that you have found me because I have so many worlds to share with you! All of my novels are clean for teens with never-been-done ideas, especially with respect to the creatures I have created in a world you’ve never read about before!
You will not find coffins, garlic or crosses in my books. You will not find silver bullets, morphing dogs or things with wings. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that…I’ve spent many lovely hours with fairies, vampires, werewolves, aliens, angels and demons…and loved every minute of it, I might add) but you’ve come to learn what I am all about.
So…You will not find the “same-old, same-old”, “been here, done that” adventures and plotlines. In my pages, you will find powers, beautiful and horrific creatures with true agendas and plotlines that drive the story and make the characters do some unthinkable things. Heartache, forbidden love and romance with a sprinkle of the unknown. The storylines and creatures were created by me just for you.
Jump in or dip your toes, The Pria Chronicles and Paranormal Painless series will have you on the edge of your seat.
*Copy provided in exchange for an honest review* This was my first book by Shannon and I loved it so much!! She introduced me to some unique, unforgettable, and fascinating characters that I am completely obsessed with! This book follows, Michael, a boy with a unique power, and his sarcastic cat, Henry, who he can talk to!!! Henry is by far one of the best characters I have read about. Michael and Henry's relationship is one of my ultimate favorites. Those two make me yearn to befriend them in real life and I miss them so much. This book also follows two other characters: Avery and Greyson. At the beginning of the book, I had a slight problem with the fact that it kept referring to the reader with "you." I personally am not a fan of that sort of thing but I got over it once it stopped. There was also the little thing that I don't believe guys think the word 'sigh' whenever they're disappointed or something. It sounded more like a text message to me whenever that popped up. Another problem I had with this was that it changed POV's on me out of nowhere. But that must have been a problem with my kindle or something since the author explained that she definitely wrote whose POV we were reading in. Also, after I actually thought about it, I love Avery and Michael, but there was one thing that didn't sit well with me about their feelings toward each other. I believe there are definitely some feelings but I wouldn't go as far as to call it being in love. There is no foundation or proof that supported their feelings. They never did or experienced the things that helps someone fall in love with another person. For example, making their own memories or bond in a deep, emotional level. Beside the lack of foundation I was smitten with them and they made my heart happy. Shannon's writing is one of my favorites I have come across. The way she describes everything is so soothing and effortless that I could've been lulled to sleep had I not been so captivated by the story line. This story and every character in it is equally addicting and hilarious. I couldn't tell you how many times I laughed out loud. This is one of my favorite series now and I can't wait to continue with the rest of the books!
I had a lot of issues with this book. First, it is painfully obvious that no editor was used. There were grammatical errors, missing words, extra words, the wrong form of a word, names misspelled (Reese and Reeze for the same person), etc. For example: "A strange tingling as if a disease was slowing taking over me." "... it would easier on the both of us." "I guess they could've have planted it...". These things occurred far too frequently. Also, multiple uses of "back-peddling". Do we not know the difference between peddling and pedalling? (Or pedaling if American). At this point I know I'm being nit-picky... but there was so much wrong that I couldn't help but notice it all and get really annoyed by it. Beyond that, the writing style is awkward, with weird sentence structures. I had to go back and re-read many sentences in a different way, because how they were written didn't make sense with my original inflection and emphasis. The story had poor flow and seemed to jump without adequately explaining the elapsed time. I would suggest adding in dates to the characters' topic discussions to better help the reader follow the passing of time. The plot developments were also extremely inauthentic and forced; I found the use of the "literary agent" to coax out some background and further the plot development did not work well and was too contrived. I didn't find that the three characters had any real difference in voice - they all sounded like the same person. Again, I realize I'm being nit-picky here.
I DID like the concept and story line. The supernatural powers and shadow creatures living among us, etc., made for a good idea, but was poorly executed. However, my issues with this book lay not with the creative elements; the author's imagination is solid. It's only in execution that there is a lot of room for improvement. This is why the book received 2/5 stars instead of 1/5.
Shannon, I am a librarian by profession, but have also completed an editing course, have edited multiple works before, and currently work as a freelance editor. I could act as an editor for you, if you wish. Otherwise, good luck with the rest of your works!
Echoes by Shannon Rieger is the first book of the Pria Chronicles series. This book is written in several points of views. Each chapter is a different account of the story. There are three main characters Michael, Avery, and Greyson. All three of them are unique and possess some form of power. Michael is the most powerful I think because not only can he read minds he can also talk to and understand his cat. He can also see things no one else can see like creatures and spirits. He can smell their souls, see their auras, and feels their echoes as he calls them. He's very anxious and scared but tries to come across as calm. Greyson is able to calm people down with just a touch and Avery can stop time and summon Greyson through her thoughts. The book is written like a series of blog posts. Each character talks about the things going on. In some cases you are reading the same thing basically twice but from different points of view. There is a huge lack of communication. No one talks to anyone really and everyone just assumes things. Michael is in love with Avery but thinks that Avery and Greyson are an item. Greyson and Avery are best friends and Avery is in love with Michael but thinks he doesn't like her. Michaels cat Henry is pretty funny and one of my favorite parts of the book. His cattitude is hilarious and I really enjoyed his character. This book is very unique. I had never quite read anything like this. I am anxious to find out what happens in this series. It has intrigued me enough that I want to continue. 3 star rating.
I've really enjoyed my self while reading this book. Henry the cat was the funniest/ best part of the book. I just can't wait to see what happens to everyone in the next one.
“Like the creatures living incognito amongst the human race, so will Michael attempt to conceal from others his strange powers and abilities.”
Waking up one morning, 6 year old Michael discovers that he can not only read other peoples minds but he sees creatures moving among humans and everyone he meets has an aura about them whether its the scent of brown sugar from his dad or the beautiful lights and wings emanating from the love of his life, Avery. Approached to start writing a book on certain topics, the reader is taken on the start of Michael, Avery, and Greyson’s journey, where ever it might lead.
When I first started reading this, I felt that it would end up being a solid 3 stars. The first 10% of the book (reading on my kindle) is slow and is the set up of the story. I dragged my feet trying to get through the beginning but I’m glad that I stuck with it. Additionally, the reason for it not being 5 stars, is there are points in which the love/ relational aspect of the story feels too… heavy? While it seems there is some foreshadowing to an explanation of why Michael is so drawn to Avery, it occasionally felt a little too much.
What I liked about this sci-fi YA book was how unique it was. Again, the set up took forever and felt a little overdone but once you get past that, there’s a suspense aspect that keeps you reading until the end, asking for more. Oh! And I forgot to mention the fun side character, Henry, Michael’s cat. Being able to read minds doesn’t stop at humans which adds a gentle humor aspect to the story at just the right times. Finally, a book full of suspense and intrigue and a comical relief cat, there is also that romantic aspect I mentioned. It’s this little bit that makes me think this book would appeal to a wider audience – there’s multiple dimensions to this book and I love it.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the YA and/ or sci-fi genres and I will most certainly be looking for the next book in the series.
Please note: I did receive this e-book for free in exchange for my honest review. All words and opinions are my own.
Echoes by Shannon Rieger was surprisingly unexpected. Most of the time in books I can get a sense of what direction the book is heading, but with this book I was drawn in because I couldn't figure out what would happen next and I needed to know.
Michael Hilton is a 17 year old high school student who discovers he has special powers which he refers to as echoes, due to an accident he was in when he was only 6. He struggles in dealing with these as some people's echoes will cause him physical pain. He can see creatures which scare him. He can also read people's minds. The only people in Michael's life that know of his powers are his cousin Cole and his cat Henry. I don't know about everyone else but I would love to be able to talk to my cat, so the book has some comedic parts that we see through Michael and Henry's relationship. Michael is in love with Avery, a girl in his high school... Avery also has a special power but has hidden it from everyone except her best friend Greyson, whom Michael thinks she is dating. Avery is in love with Michael but thinks he isn't interested. Greyson rounds out the trio as the 3rd one to have a power, which he notices when he is just 7 years old while saving Avery. Michael is not aware of the powers Avery and Greyson have, but he suspects something is up with Greyson. The other two are not aware of the powers Michael have. This makes for a frustrating and interesting story. Frustrating because you as the reader want these three to hurry up and tell each other of their powers so they can band together and figure out what is going on in their small town. Interesting because you can't wait to see what all these creepy creatures that are showing up want, and what will happen to these three as the story progresses. Overall I thought this was a great read. I would definitely give this book 4 stars and recommend this to any teen or adult, because I think anyone of any age would enjoy this story.
Echoes by Shannon Rieger is book one in The Pria Chronicles. Michael Hilton was only six years old when he fell into an unexpected coma. He awoke with mysterious powers, his life forever changed. He could see unearthly creatures that where once hidden to him, hidden from everyone. He hides his powers and abilities from everyone, afraid of what they would say. He has a difficult time coping when he discovers that he can read minds, the only person or thing that knows what he can do is his cat, Henry. His new, twisted reality also include the echoes of other people. When Michael first meets Avery Simmons, the girl of his dreams, he sees her echoes as beautiful and he feels the magnetism to her but she has a boyfriend, Greyson Sloan. Both of their echoes a pleasant to him. Recently he discovers beings with echoes that are horrifying. They stalk him when he is around Avery and he soon realizes that she is the target. Are they friend or foe? Can he protect her? Will his powers come to light? This story was very different then what I am used too. It takes you to a place of different powers. Your pulled in from the very beginning. She paints a very detailed world that makes it hard to put the book down. I can’t wait to read more from this amazing author. This book is an amazing start to what I’m sure will be an amazing series.
Michaels life changed when he was six years old. When he woke from a coma his world had gone from normal to strange. No one knows his secret, he has worked hard to hide what he had become. No one knows how or why the change happened and they also didn’t know what he could see, smell, hear, feel. He thought he had seen it all and had interpreted it to the best he knew how. But things just keep on getting stranger. Michael has a special bond with his cat, Henry. Henry drives him mad but he is his best friend.
Michael is secretly in love with Avery, a girl from school, but she has a boyfriend, Greyson. They are inseparable, never seen apart. Michael starts to discover that Greyson may be more than he appears but can not confirm it.
Greyson and Avery also have secrets that came to them when they were young. They have sworn never to use them again. Avery has held a secret love for Michael and Greyson encourages her to go for it. But just as she makes her move, Michael decides he has to go away to protect her. Can Michael and Greyson save her.
The relationship between Michael and his cat is hilarious. This story is full of weird and strange things. The world in which the writer has created is definitely unique. If you like weird and strange then this book is for you.
I choose this rating because it was awesome I loved the characters in this book especially Henry and it was extremely good thank you for writing this book and I think you should write More and I would recommend this to my best friends but I didn't like that Dean came in and made things worse but I do loved that Michael was ready to fight for Avery .can't wait to Read the next book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!THANK YOU
Shannon Rieger has woven an interesting tale mixing other-worldly beings, teens with special abilities, and everyday folks. I enjoyed the interactions between Michael and his cat, Henry. Henry was a hoot! I am intrigued by the concept of echoes and can't wait to seeing what happens in the next book in the series.
Echoes:The Pria Chronicles-book one by Shannon Rieger
Oh I absolutely love this book!! Extremely well written and such beautiful characters! I got sucked into it immediately!! I give it 5 stars and I wish I could give it more! I seriously can not wait to read the second book!! I'm on pins and needles over here!! Michael is your average 17 year old teenager. Except one minor detail… he found out at the young age of 6, he can read people's minds… including his cat’s. ( which in my opinion.. is one of the best parts of the book. Oh my goodness.. their conversations are hilarious!!) Avery is the high school sweetheart at school! Everyone either loves her or wants to be her. She is seriously added by all. She has a power very few people know. She is still learning about it and trying to understand it. Dean is every girl’s fantasy. Anyone who comes in contact him him, instantly loves and admires him!! He is your all around good guy. He also has a power to calm and heal people. The only person that knows this is Avery. Dean and Avery are best friends. But everyone around them automatically think they are dating. They have a long and interesting past, which slowly comes to light. Michael is secretly in love with Avery. And Avery is secretly in love with Michael. Unbeknownst to the other person. Can they realize that they love each other before it's too late? Or will the secrets come back and haunt them for good? This book is simply amazing! I can't not wait to see what happens in the second book.. soo looking forward to read it!! Shannon Rieger did an outstanding job using her imagination on this book. The characters, creatures and monsters .. are just fascinating!! Terrific job!!!
ECHOS-BOOK ONE OF THE PRIA CHRONICLES By Shannon Rieger 4/5 STARS In book one of the Pria Chronicles you’ll meet the young man named Michael Hilton, who at six years old is hospitalized with mysterious pains that will thrust him into a world that he has no idea about. Before he is even released he begins to see strange creatures looking in the windows at him that scare the life out of him. Upon leaving the hospital he soon sees that there is more to see them the rest of the world can see. Once he discovers that he can hear other peoples thoughts, see their auras or smell their scents, he finds an unlikely friend in the family cat Henry. Realizing he can hear Henry’s thoughts and converse with. in his mind helps him to feel no so alone. Upon further observation he finds a friend at a local park who will become like a sister to him, Josephine who no one else can see because she is the spirit of a little girl who died years ago. Avery Simmons, the girl Michael has a crush on and Greyson Sloan, her boyfriend are two very close friends of his, although if truth be told he is very jealous of their relationship because he sees how happy they are and knows he will never have a chance with Avery as long as Greyson is in the picture. Confused over the strange things that happen around them he sees there is a bond there that can't be broken. Visiting a park one day with Henry, he is approached by a old woman who looks like she is homeless, but Michael can see beyond the obvious an immediately knows there is something terribly wrong about this woman and he should run away. Curiosity gets the better of him, and he approaches her. She begins talking about strange markings that she says are on Michael and some chosen girl. Things quickly escalate and a turn of events leave him and Henry running for safety! Not long after he notices that every time he goes around Avery the woman appears. Fearing for Avery’s safety decides that staying away from her may be the only way to keep her safe. When one night being awakened by extreme pains he knew she was in trouble and rushed over to help only to find the houses being robbed, and worse yet him not being able to help her. When Greyson arrives and finds Avery he is left questioning what was Michael doing there, how did he know where she was hiding, and why did he run away once she was safe? Growing suspicious afterwards he is left wondering if Michael is as trustworthy as they initially thought he was. Avery and Greyson have secrets of their own to protect, powers that no one else can know about. Avery has the ability to freeze time and with the exception of a handful of times she hasn’t used it other than to talk to Greyson in private. Greyson, has the ability to hear people call him in times of distress and the ability to calm them down and make them feel less anxious. He and Avery do share a special bond, he saved her life when they were six and he then became her rock for the rest of her life. Best friends that can communicate in ways others don’t know about. Shannon Rieger writes in such a style that will draw you in with suspense, with just the right amount of humor sprinkled in to keep you turning to the next page.
I was expecting this book to be at least entertaining, but I was so surprised at how quickly I was sucked in to the point I couldn't put it down. Did I read at work because I just had to know what happened? Yes. Yes I did.
Michael Hilton can see and hear things other people can't--he calls them echoes. He can also read his cat's mind, which I thought was super weird at first, but eventually you just can't help but loving Henry. In the beginning, I wasn't really jiving with the way the book was set up: it changes POVs and the characters write on certain topics, so most of the time you are in the moment and sometimes you aren't. There was a literary agent and I was like...okay...where is this going? I don't always like different POVs, but Shannon did a FANTASTIC job switching between them and using them for great storytelling. It quickly became my favorite thing about the book. Right when you think you got it figured out, you get in someone else's head and see a whole new perspective. It killed me (in the best way) 'cause chapters ended at awful times and it would switched to someone else and I was dying to know how it all turned out. I loved how it managed to be such a page-turner, but without a ton of violence or hardcore mystery. It was like magic.
I felt Michael was pure awesome and I loved him and wanted to be in his head the most. Really, I mostly enjoyed the other POVs when they were giving their own perceptions about Michael. Greyson's character bothered me sometimes--I felt his POV didn't have as much voice--but by the end I felt he had become more defined. Avery is cool, and I love the conflicting dynamic between the three of them. Sometimes I wish they would just talk to each other more, but they're teenagers. Assuming completely wrong things is part of the frustrating fun. One thing that I thought was kind of strange: the parents are pretty much nonexistent. Like, they're there, and each character mentions that they have some, but I feel like they aren't involved in their kids' lives at all. It's one thing for that to be their character, but for everyone to just talk about parents...I don't know. Just a little thing. I feel sad for Michael too, because that guy just needs some support.
Also, I hate Dean. Down with Dean. Get Dean out of the way because he just needs to go. It's gotta be Michael and Avery. Please?
Overall, I really enjoyed the story--it reminded me of everything I love about the Percy Jackson series, but it didn't feel like a cheap copy. The Pria Chronicles feel new and refreshing, and I can't wait to see where the next books take us!
Rated 4/5 for great imagery, compelling stories, awesome POV use, and Henry.
From the age of six Michael realizes something has changed in his life. He is hearing more sounds, smelling different smells and even seeing some different things. As he gets older he starts hearing thoughts from his cat, Henry. Then surprisingly he is able to communicate with him telepathically. Now this doesn't always go well for Michael. He realizes he cannot talk to Henry out loud in public or else people with think he is crazy. So Henry sometimes takes advantage of Michael and forces him to do things he doesn't want to do. Force how you wonder? If Michael doesn't want to take him for a walk he will pee in his shoe to get him to go. So while out on said walk Michael sees strange things in the shadows, looking in windows or just casually being around. Josephine, one of those things he now sees, is a spirit girl in the park from the 1900’s. Michael and her have a nice friendship. Once things start to get out of whack. He is worried about leading these “bad” creatures to Josephine's park because he doesn't want them to hurt her. Not only her of course but a few of these “nasties” have seen him at Averys house. He makes a decision to change schools so hopefully they will not see him with Avery again. He wants them to forget about her.
There are two other kids who Michael knows from high school that he thinks one might have some weird powers like him. The other one he just...well….loves. Even though she doesn't know it. Avery and Greyson are like two peas in a pod. That explains why everyone thinks they are boyfriend and girlfriend. If one was missing he or she would show up shortly so Michael doesn't have much chance to lure Avery away from Greyson. Michael has thought he witnessed a few powers from Greyson and Avery is one of those people who look “different” to him.
I really am not understanding this book. I feel like it's a bunch of different stories put together to make a book. Maybe this style of writing is just not for me. There were parts that were interesting and although I think the cat was annoying he could be considered funny too. I wish some parts were more than touched on during the chapter they were in. The whole story of the echoes that people put out and this boy takes in is a great idea that is what drew me to this book. I figured this would introduce me to a whole new world than what I have read before. One thing I did enjoy was the origami that Michael did. He did it to help calm his anxiety down but he made the coolest things. Stars being among his favorite and I loved what he did with them when he was done.
Echoes by Shannon Reiger is a five-star read. It’s the first book in the Pria Chronicles, and what a first book. Each chapter is written like journal entry or as an on line diary entry and all entries from three main characters POV, and its great reading from each person’s perspective as you realise that they are all in the own worlds just floating in the same universe, and the misunderstandings that take place have you wanting to scream at them. The first and main character we meet is Michael Hilton, ever since he was a six-year boy he has been able to see things other people can’t, and it got him stuck in hospital for longer than he wanted and now has him worried if it gets out he will end up in a padded room with rubber pants. Michael is able to see and feel things like emotions, he calls it Echoes, and he discovers that everyone has their own taste, his dad for instance tastes like apple crisp, he soon discovers that it appears good people smell like nice things and bad people smell rotten. Not that he licks them just gets the taste. Michael can also hear thoughts and has discovered he can talk telepathically to some people, the worst thing he finds about this thou is that at the moment the only person he can talk to in his mind is his cat Henry. Henry used to do strange stuff like pee in his shoes, steal food and leave hairballs on the bed, as they have a love hate relationship Michael never thought this could be on purpose until he hears Henry and he admits to doing it on purpose just to bug Michael. The other characters are Avery Simmons and Greyson Sloan, Avery is the secret love of Michaels life but he has been too scared to ever admit it to her as he thinks that she is dating Greyson. Only that’s not the case, Avery and Greyson are just very good friends after he rescue’s her when she was kidnapped as a child. As they all write their own part it all comes together along with the realisation that these three are not alone, but only Michael can see the other things it appears, even his cat Henry sees the scary creatures as animals and people. Shanon Reiger has managed to bring another world within our own alive, making you see things that may or may not be there. Checking bushes and looking twice at that old lady with the limp. Also talking to the cat and dog, just in case they may answer you back one day. This is a great first book, and I for one can’t wait to see where the chronicles go.
Echoes is the first book in The Pria Chronicles by Shannon Rieger. It is a young adult, paranormal/fantasy. Michael Hilton is a seventeen year old high school senior, who is anything but a ‘normal’ teenager. Ever since waking up from falling into an unexplained coma at the age of six- Michael has been able to see and hear things in our world, which no one else is able to. He can hear people’s thoughts, see their aura’s- their echoes, and see grotesque creatures that lurk, all around. He has learned to keep his abilities secret, because he is afraid that if anyone found out, he would sound so crazy that he would be placed in a mental institution. Avery Simmons and Michael met back in ninth grade. She is the cutest girl in high school- and he was drawn to her and her beautiful echoes from the instant they met. All this time Michael has been secretly in love with Avery, but never telling her how he feels. Avery has a best friend Greyson Sloan, they go everywhere and do everything together- so everyone assumes that they are dating- and this is the reason that Michael hasn’t told her how he feels. I don’t want to give anything away, so you will need to read the book to discover all the intriguing facts. Greyson and Avery are hiding secrets of their own. Will they trust Michael enough to tell him? What happens when Michael thinks he may be putting Avery in danger? Is he correct? What kind of danger? What do the ‘creatures’ have to do with it? What happens when everything becomes apparent? Ms. Rieger has created a very imaginative world in which her story unfolds. Her scene setting is both vivid and descriptive. Her characters are interesting and likeable. She has injected suspense, drama, humour and emotion into the story- all of which make this quite an entertaining read. The story is told from 3 point of view- and each chapter is written much like a journal entry. There were some areas which I found lagged a little or became confusing- reading the same scene from all three characters seemed a little superfluous at times. The concept is unique and thought provoking- what if there were creatures in our world that we are unable to see? This story continues in book two and I am intrigued to see where the story goes from here.
There is a lot going on in this book, to make sense of my review I will break it down by the three main characters that we get to follow in the book. The story starts off with Michael and I absolutely love his perspective. There is so much character building and world creation that I enjoyed. I love when I can feel right at home in the book and move through to different scenarios with the characters as if it was my own personal tv show. I could relate to Michael he was the reluctant hero in my eyes. He is cowardly and will admit it himself but he doesn’t see all that there is to him. When we get a description of him from the other characters it is really different from how he sees himself. He is drawn to Avery and that seems to be his sole focus and almost everything else is backwashed. Well, aside from the strange creatures and spirits that he can see. His relationship with Henry, his cat, was my favorite part of the dialogue because the author doesn’t hide how absurd it would seem to the outside world if anyone knew what was really going on. There were a lot of twists and turns about Michael’s point of view and it added a depth to the story because no one else really seemed to realize what was going on around them. Avery is the second main character in my eyes. She is strong and beautiful and so shy. I felt so bad for her experiences, I hated to see her suffer and it seems like wherever the story goes next she is the center of it. I felt bad for all the things that she had been through and wanted to protect her just like Greyson and Michael did. Greyson, I don’t know how I feel about him. He is one that I would love to sit here and hate but he is Avery’s best friend and I tell myself that he is doing everything in her best interest. I hated some of the twists that were revealed in his point of view, it shattered some of the strength that I felt while rooting for Avery and Michael separately. I can only hope that he does not cause a rift in what is coming. I feel like too many people trying to protect one person could cause some drama. But that is just me getting ahead of myself. I loved the beginning of the series and cannot wait to see where it goes next. I can only hope that book two is on it’s way.
I give Echoes, book 1 of The Pria Chronicles by Shannon Ringer 5 stars.
Michael Hilton is not your average 17 year old. At six years old, he ended up in the hospital in a coma. After he awoke, he could see, hear, or taste people’s auras (he calls them echoes). He could also see creatures no one else could. He knows no one else has these powers, and he has to hide them. He also has to cope with them. Some of these auras are so strong, they linger with him. The bad ones, well he tries to completely avoid them.
Everything goes along just fine, he is managing, until he meets Avery Simmons in ninth grade. She is the cutest girl in the school, and has the most beautiful echoes – lovely wing-like things attached to her back. He falls in love with her instantly. But to his dismay, Grayson Sloan is already attached to her. They go everywhere together and although he is jealous, Grayson is too nice and he really can’t hate him.
Besides dealing with this problem, there seem to be more and more dark creatures lurking around. What is going on?
After you get past Michael’s childhood, this seems like a teenage love triangle set in high school. Being that I am long removed from high school, this is not my favorite type of book. But the part that does revolve around it is quite enjoyable to read. It’s more of an unrequited love than a sulky teenage thing. Although Michael is in love with Avery, it is somehow kept light and enjoyable. Plus there is so much else going on – some people aren’t what they seem, dark creatures lurking about, even talking cats! Okay, there is only one talking cat, Henry, and he can only talk to Michael but he is a great comedic sidekick.
It fits into the Young Adult category by being light on sex and violence, but definitely keeps adults interested in the story and although it has its dark parts, it is light and funny too. It is written in a style the is quite different too, reminiscent to me of the way Dracula was written. I wholly recommend this to both young and not so young adults alike!
Echoes by Shannon Rieger sucked me in by telling me that there was a judgmental cat in the story. To me that was something that I could not pass up. That may have been what had me interested, but the story itself grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go. It is an interesting tale of three kids who each have powers that nobody else knows about. This is imaginative and completely different than anything I have ever read before. The story is told with such imagery that I honestly felt like I was there in the park, or I could hear the snide remarks being thrown my way. I definitely looked at my cats differently while reading this book. This is the first book in the series so therefore it mostly a set up story, and usually that is a disappointment, not here. This sets you up for what is to come and what is to come is very exciting. Michael can see creatures that you and I can’t, he can also feel what we feel. So, try not to be anxious around him, it makes him all weird. Avery has some powers too, but they are more controllable so they don’t come out as much. Then there is Greyson, he can make anyone feel calm, which in my opinion is pretty awesome. They all go to the same high school together. Their relationship is awkward to tell but great to discover as you read about them in the stories that they tell. They were hired to write about certain topics that were assigned to them and they make for a read that is almost like reading a journal. Insightful and creative beyond my capabilities. They tell certain stories and you can see the friendship grow while they become important parts in each other lives. This is a five-star read for me because frankly, I couldn’t put it down. It was fascinating to think about what could be all around us and not seen. To see these three people, grow with their powers and quite frankly deal with them showed me I can deal with a lot more than I thought. Though this was a set up for the next book and it left me with a lot of question, I can’t wait to see the answers in the next book. I am hooked.
Echos (The Pria Chronicles Book 1) by Shannon Rieger is the first book in The Pria Chronicles. This story is humorous, action and fantasy. This story is a young adult science fiction fantasy that brings creatures alive and make you believe in these characters.
Michael Hilton was six years old when he fell into a coma. When he wakes up, he finds that he has mysterious powers that he didn't have before. Will this change his life forever? Creatures that were hidden before to him are no longer hidden. Will he try to hide his powers from everyone? What will he do with his new powers? What will he do when he becomes aware that he can read minds and not just human but his cat, Henry too. What will happen when he meets the girl of his dreams? Everyone has their own echos but hers are beautiful to him. The problem with her is that she already has a boyfriend and he has an echo that has a calming effect on him. What will he do?
Usually, he finds the echos enchanting but lately they have become horrifying and overwhelming. Whenever he is around her, creatures are always stalking in the shadows and in a fog. What will he do when he realizes that she just may be their target? Are they in danger? How will they survive? Not knowing if they are friends or enemies, he feels like he must protect her. Will he protect her safety? Will he have to reveal his secret to everyone?
This is my first read by Shannon Rieger. Shannon lives with her husband and children. She has written all her life, creating worlds and creatures. She has a teaching background which she uses her experiences to create a genuine world of conflict for teenagers while adding creatures from another dimension. This story will make you laugh as Shannon brings the creatures to life and interacts with humans. This story will take you into their world of fantasy and pull you into their lives. This story is a page turner that you will want to see what happens at the end. I highly suggest this story as I know you will enjoy it as much as I have.
Rate: 4 Stars Title & Author: The Pria Chronicles: Echoes, Book One by Shannon Rieger Writing: Good Violence: Some Sex: None
When Michael Hilton was a young boy he unfortunately fell into a coma, and when he finally awakes he was no longer the same. Michael woke up to find that he has new powers, ones that he’s not all that comfortable in having. With now the vision to seeing creatures that is invisible to the human eye. And being able to hear the voices of people thoughts, it can take a toll on anyone. Things soon start to look up when he meets Avery, or so he hopes. But just like every teenage romance there has to be a fork in the road. Avery has a boyfriend and if that doesn’t make things bad enough the same creatures that are blind to everyone else, maybe after her. Will Michael be able to keep Avery safe or will Avery face her fate. While reading this book, and the creatures that only Michael can see, left me with a spooky feeling. Shannon Rieger has an vive imagination that leaves you wanting to read more. I love the summary of the book, it instantly catches your attention and you expect so much. But to me the book didn’t do a lot of justice for the summary. I kind of felt like the story at some moments drag on way too much, instead of getting to the point. But the book has it funny and good points. My favorite is Henry, Michael judgmental, but funny cat. He's one character that I look forward to reading about when he's mention I. The book. Their conversation is one that keeps the story positive, when there's a lot of things going bad. In the beginning of the story you feel bad for Michael, but then you realize how strong he is to be able to have a handle on his strange power. How many people can say that they can go through what he going through and be able to deal with it? I know for sure I wouldn't be able to. This is a good book to read and follow the series.
Echoes is the first book in Shannon Rieger’s The Pria Chronicles, a series which is currently on its seventh book. It tells the story of a young man named Michael who can see things that other people can’t and read minds (particularly the mind of his cat, Henry, who he spends a lot of time talking to).
The premise of the book is that Michael and two other students at his school, Avery and Greyson, have been approached by a literary agent and asked to write about their experiences. This agent provides topics for them to write about, which are given in the chapter titles. For example, chapter one is “Michael Hilton on the topic of His Flair”. The vast majority of the chapters are from Michael’s perspective, with occasional chapters from Avery and Greyson allowing the reader to learn a little more of their experiences of events than Michael is aware of.
The writing style gives the characters, in particular Michael, a very believable voice. The reader is very much drawn into his story, whilst aware of his dubious reliability as a narrator (something which the chapters from Avery and Greyson help to expose). Michael’s regular interactions with Henry help us to warm to him as a character, and Henry is a catalyst for many of the events of the book.
The supernatural elements in Echoes are fascinating and it is clear that Rieger has put a lot of thought into them. By the end of the book, there is much that lacks explanation but I have no doubt that the subsequent books in the series expose much more of the world that Michael is caught up in.
As well as the supernatural elements, Echoes touches upon many issues that impact on the lives of teenagers. This is done sensitively and without making a big deal of things. It adds a lot of depth and relatability to the characters.
I give this book four stars. I would recommend it to teen readers who enjoy fantasy with contemporary settings, talking animals and relatable accounts of the messiness of teenage life.
I was a little wary when I first starting reading Echoes Book One of the Pria Chronicles by Shannon Rieger. The story itself has a lot of potential and now that I have read book one, I truly can not wait for book two! (Warning cliff hanger!!) One of the things I thought was a good addition to the book was how not only is it told from the main character Michael’s point of view, it also includes two of the other supporting character’s points in a couple of chapters, that tie into what Michael is thinking and feeling but also giving us an idea of what other characters feel and think as well. Our main hero or the Watcher is Michael. Michael is a senior in high school; he is 17, and not a normal kid. Ever since a strange accident when he was 6 years old, he has had supernatural abilities. He can see auroras, read minds, and sense when something is not right, he calls this a persons “echoes”. He also has the ability to see creatures which for him, are in their true form as ugly, deformed, gross things. To others they seem like rabid dogs or a cat at least that is how Henry, Michael’s cat views them. Avery, who happens to be Michael’s crush, is also a senior in high school. She has an ability of her own that she acquired after a traumatic experience when she was 7 years old. She, like Michael hides this ability from everyone except one other person. Greyson, also a senior in high school is another supporting character. He as well has abilities that he does not share with others. He is our protector. His ability also started around 7 years old and has vowed only to use them with one other person. Overall, I was very captivated with Shannon’s writing and the story itself. I would definitely say this is a 4 star read and would recommend this read to an adult of any age.
Echoes (The Pria Chronicles Book 1) By: Shannon Rieger 5 out of 5 stars
The story Echoes (The Pria Chronicles Book 1) by Shannon Rieger is a YA science fiction/fantasy book. We are introduced to Michael Hilton, who at a young age was hospitalized in a coma. He awakens a changed person. He is now able to see creatures that are invisible to everyone else. He also feels pain when feeling certain emotions or echoes from those around him. He very quickly learns he must make sure to hide what he sees and feels from those around him so they don’t think he is crazy. Michael as well finds he is able to read minds. Which he finds is very annoying in the case of the family cat, Henry. Then Michael meets Avery Simmons. He is drawn to her and her echoes. He then begins to realize that the creatures he is seeing have a pattern to them. Will Michael figure out what these creatures are and what they want?
I really enjoyed this story. It takes me back to when I was younger and had me thinking of what I felt like back then and then to add all that Michael has on top of that would not be easy. The story excels in making you believe in the creatures Michael sees and how he reacts to them. The crush that Michael has on Avery is a key part of the story and dare I say very sweet. He would do anything for her and even resorts to leaving her gifts on her desk. Okay, every book unless it is a deep dark novel should have comic relief. The relief is Henry, the family cat. He is the only cat I know of that wants to go out for a walk and the sass that he gives Michael made me laugh out loud. Not to say that Michael doesn’t get a few jabs in as well. I love animals in the books I read and Henry takes the cake, err the cream in my book.
I recommend this story to anyone who loves science fiction and wants to know what happens when a teenager goes up against some unworldly creatures.
Echoes the Pria Chronicles by Shannon Rieger 3 Stars
Echoes revolves around three main characters; Michael, Avery and Greyson. Each one possesses some form of power. Greyson can calm you through touch and Avery can stop time and summon Greyson through thought. Michael is the most powerful I believe because it only can he read people’s minds and communicate with his cat Henry but he can also see creatures invisible to everyone else and see spirits. He can also see people’s auras, smell their soul and feel their vibrations which he calls echoes. Most of the time he’s scared yet tries to appear calm and collected. Somehow everything is centred around Avery. Greyson is her best friend, Michael is in love with her and the creatures seem to be watching her.
The book is written in the style of journal entries from three different points of view. It was good to see each view but somewhat monotonous because you would read the same scene from all three views. There is a lot going on in the book but you don't understand anything that's happening because nothing is fully explained. Michael loves Avery and she loves him back but they barely speak to each other the entire book. They are just assuming things about one another. Incidents happen and everyone assumes the worst of the other because no one is really talking together. Greyson and Avery don't know about Michael’s powers and vice versa so everything is a secret.
The book ended and I didn't realize that it was finished. It didn't end in a cliffhanger and absolutely nothing was resolved. For me the book stayed on the same level throughout and there was never any build up for it to peak. Therefore I was left feeling disappointed and confused at the end. I will read part two though and hope I find out what's going on.
From the very first chapter, Shannon had me captivated by the characters and the plot; I couldn’t put the book down. In my opinion, Michal makes the perfect character to start the book, as he is the typical awkward teenage boy who feels like he doesn’t quite “fit” – although in this case it is more true most, as having the ability to see echoes, invisible creatures and talk to his cat aren’t exactly standard. Henry was by far my favourite character; he is the most sarcastic cat ever, which makes him to realistic. His actions and sarcasm fit so perfectly with the mannerisms of almost every cat in existence, making him so lovable. I was in awe of Avery, her kind nature and beauty. I can completely understand why Michael, as a teenage boy, would have a thing for her. One thing I should say though, is that without the basis of a friendship first I find it hard to believe that Michael is in love with Avery. Greyson is the kind of boy that I would want to be around twenty-four seven, with his calming demeaner and charming good looks. The friendship that the three of them form, is one that I can’t wait to see keep growing throughout the series. I really enjoy books that allow the reader to see things from different points of view – yet another reason I really enjoyed this book. From the start, this story is fast-paced and gets into the plot quickly, with the three main characters being hired to tell their account of situations. I was surprised by the dark tones that this book has – the creatures that live in the world, unseen by human eyes, provide an edge to the story that connects with the inner child of the reader, afraid of the monsters in the dark. Whilst this book isn’t the usual sort of book that I read, I found that I really enjoyed it and would recommend it to anyone wanting to try something new. I can’t wait to read the rest of the series!
Quirky and different echoes is a book that will leave wanting a little more but not in a bad it is different than a lot of the novels that are out right now but it is refreshing. Sorta like a that friend we all have that flows to the beat of her own drum this book is one of a kind. It does start of a little odd and slow but don't let that turn you away. It is full of imagination and paints lovely bright pictures in you mind with the authors words. Something different than the romance novels and vampires books it gives your mind a world of a whole new level for you to delve into. Echoes is something that will make you wonder just what the other of the world see and if maybe were are just missing the bigger picture. In this novel you will follow along with three different teenagers all seeming tied into one another but yet separate in their own ways. You will meet Avery the bright lovely girl who has lived through something horrific just to turn around and be lovely bubbly spirit. And her best friend Grayson a boy who well is easy to be around layed back and seems to always put every one at ease. And finally Micheal he different anxious and always hyper aware of everything around him he is also madly in love with Avery. Which jusst brings you in for one hard giggle as you read this book of to be young and in high school would any of us redo those days. But these three all have something in common they all are connected in a very specail way the all have powers. Connected by on act over ten years ago follow along with these three as you here their personal thought of life and high school, love and the things not seen to the naked eye I hope you enjoy this story I sure did and I cant wait for the second book!!!
Echoes (The Pria Chronicals Book 1) by Shannon Rieger is a book I would recommend for fantasy lovers. In this book Michael Hilton is our narrator and this is his story. When he was six years old he went into a coma and no one knew why, but from then on everything changed. Suddenly he could see things that no one else could such as peoples’ auras, feelings, and these creatures that he doesn’t know from friend or foe… of course that’s not the only thing he can do. Michael can also read peoples’ minds, as well as his pet cat Henry’s which gives him the ability to actually communicate with his cat. Of course, with these kind of powers he has to keep them secret because more than likely if he were to tell someone about his powers than they would just think him mad and probably end up putting him in an insane asylum somewhere. During the story Michael meets a girl by the name of Avery Simmons, whom he is drawn to thanks to her echoes (the name for the aura and the feelings he sees) and will do anything for her including protecting her as it seems that the creatures are targeting her for some reason. The unfortunate thing about his attraction to her and the fact that he is attracted to her is the fact that she has a boyfriend by the name of Grayson Sloan. The fact that she’s dating Grayson does make him jealous, but what makes it worse is the fact that he can’t really hate Grayson as he’s too nice. I won’t mention much more about Avery and Grayson other than to say they do have secrets of their own. What are their Avery and Grayson’s secret and why are the creatures after Avery? Will Michael end up actually getting the girl or will Avery stay with Grayson? Well, all these questions you’ll just have to find out by reading this series.
Echoes is the first book in The Pria Chronicles, and the first book I've read from Shannon Rieger, and she knocked it out of the park with this book! Such an amazing 5 star read!
In Echoes it starts with meeting Michael Hilton, age 6, who is put in the hospital with "mysterious pains" that will change his world. He begins to see creatures in the windows, and at age six that's terrifying. But when he leaves the hospital he starts to see more and more strange things. Then he figures out he can hear other's thoughts, smell their scents and even see their aura's, he begins to freak out a bit. He also realizes that he can talk to his Cat, Henry. Soon, he begins to see a little girl named Josephine who died a few years ago. Michael also has a HUGE crush on Avery, but Avery is with Greyson. So what's Michael to do?
While at the park one day he is approached by an older woman, at first he thinks she's homeless but upon closer inspection he realizes there is something terribly wrong with her. She starts talking all this nonsense, and not making sense, talking about markings, and Michael and a chosen girl. Things start happening so fast, Michael starts to notice that anytime he is around Avery, the older woman appears. He decides that Avery isn't safe around him, and he vows to leave her alone. But what happens when Michael wakes up one night in intense pain? What happens when he knows there is something wrong with Avery? How can he explain it?
What happens with Avery and Greyson have secrets of their own? Secrets that no one can find out, can they tell Michael? Who can they trust? Shannon Rieger wrote an amazing novel that was filled with twists and turns, and I honeslty cannot wait to see what happens next.
