I really loved the approach to this books - one of skepticism that turned into a research project. It's well written, and took me only 2 hours to fully read. It's full of great information, tips, and leaves the research open for the reader to continue.

Hmmm....

A few lessons in, I realized this book is written by a Young Living adocate. She tried 9 different essential oil company's oils, and only one didn't give her "chemical headaches" . I don't know which companies comprised the other eight, but the are MANY oil companies that sell pure essential oils, unless you are a brainwashed follower of Young Living or otherwise want to make money signing people up to buy essential oils under you. This book, for the most part, is hogwash made up to get you to purchase oils only from Young Living. She is biased (in order to sign you up) and the bashing of the other mlm company is obvious to anyone in the industry. Go with books from folks who don't want to make money on you. Nerys Puchon is a wonderful well-researched non-biased source on essential oils.

What a great place to start !

For a while I have been considering studying essential oils and their health benefits . When I began to compile a reading list I saw this book and knew I should begin my journey here .
The title pretty much tells you what to expect from this work . It is not a recipe book and it is not how to or a specific primer on essential oils , rather it is comprehensive discussion on all of the issues confronted by a person who wants to responsibly add this holistic modality to their lifestyle .
I would say it provided an excellent foundation from which to go forward with my study and experimentation . I now have a clearer idea about issues such as safety , suppliers etc. . There are so many conflicting claims and controversies and the author meets them head-on and without prejudice , using logic . I found it helpful and a much more confident about where to go from here .

Good information

The information here is invaluable. I wish I could give a copy of this book to each of my friends who uses oils from Amazon or the local health food store. The grammar, however, made me cringe at times. The author is quick to site (and praise) her experience as a writer and as a teacher, but she desperately needed someone more experienced to proofread for her. The content, though, again, is solid.

4.75, this has been one of the best essential oil books I've read! Facts, figures, cited sources. This is what I want to read!!!

My only critique, keeping me from committing to 5/5 stars is the term 'chemical'. O'Sullivan clarifies her use of 'chemical' to mean 'synthetic,' but I find this to be confusing and possibly leading to misinformation. There is no 'chemical-free living,' everything is made up of chemicals. #petpeeve

The truth about essential oils without all the hype is exactly what Jen accomplishes is her book. She covers many essential oil topics in short concise lessons, easy to read. Lots of valuable information and a book I'll be referring to many times over, I'm sure. Lots of highlights, underlining, drawings and notes = a fav in my library!

Great details on essential oils- how they are made and graded. Left me wanting more to understand which are the best essential oils. Some of the uses for essential oils provided enough specifics to get started but also wanted more there as well!

This is a short book - just over 100 pages, but so packed full of information that you may need to read it more than once to understand its full benefit. It’s more scienc-y in nature than my usual reads but I found it very enlightening and helpful.

This is an essential oils reference book, so I haven't actually finished it all. Most of the way through though. It's got lots of good information.

Great read

This is a fabulous book for beyond beginners. This tells you a lay overview of the chemistry, distillation and testing processes, but then excellent practical information on oils effects on major body systems. Throughout it addresses safety concerns. Great great book.
