Rate this book

I'm a sucker for travel adventures like this, but the book was the worst travel documentation I've read so far. First the route is with its deserts and highways is boring as hell - or maybe the writing is just boring, because it's also pretty bad. The authors don't have any talent for describing the landscapes so the reader gets a good picture and wants to go there. They also don't invest too much effort into describing the nice people they meet - mostly they're only speaking about themselves and their relationship (and who cares about that?).

And well, I don't want to say, that Poland, Russia, Kazakhstan etc. don't have any nice places or people, but this book pretty much fuels the stereotypes (mean and power abusing military man, poverty, criminality, bad manners and hygiene...) and after reading it I honestly don't want to visit a single place described in here. So - for a travel book, it most certainly did a very bad job.

After stalling on this book in the beginning, I finished the remaining chapters in two sleepless nights. I blame my reticence partly on the fact that I don't often read travelogues which by necessity need to leave out many eventful things.

It may have helped that I have done a bike trip like theirs in quality myself. Though mine was much less epic than theirs.

You have to give the book its chance - you have to try to get into the protagonists' minds, and see the journey through their eyes. Which means that what you read is inevitably highly selected. There is at least one major occurrence during their journey which is only alluded to in the book.

I'm hesitant to rate this book because it is pretty much the first travelogue I read in full, but at the same time, it did draw me in after all.
