I can be mediocre for a lifetime, or perfect for a year.

That line is SO killer. AWESOME. I don’t know if I loved the way the narrative sort of bumped around a lot (and my confusion can probably be attributed to the fact that this is my first introduction to her stuff) but I still enjoyed it, which is why its a 4! My metric for what constitutes a 5 star read is currently Supergirl WOT and I know I’m going to be hard-pressed to find a story as good as that. My favorite part had to be the last section with Aruna! very cool character and story! Anyway this was good. Yeah.

LOVE her introduction. it was a genius idea to show a glimpse of her childhood and training with cain on the first few pages. that was an IMMEDIATE hook for me. the not-so-casual hints at her emotional issues and the constant switching between patrol and civilian life AND flashbacks just seemed to flow so smoothly. god that was a great first issue

Foi brabo ver a Cassandra descendo a porrada na bandidagem, mas a história ainda está começando, parece ser promissora.

Finished the entire comic run but don't want to rate every single one. Anyway, it's Cass, how am I supposed to give it anything but 5 stars???? I love it!!!!

Cassandra Cain is an amazing character, the plots are good, the art is stylistic although sometimes dips into caricature territory for characters of colour which is massively disappointing.

This really hits the ground running, summing up who Cassandra Cain is, and showing Batman set ground rules for her.

Due to poor impulse control I bought the DC Finest collection of “Batgirl: Nobody Dies Tonight”. I have them already in other collections but I’m not very bright.

So since I have a rule about having to read everything I buy I figured I’d do a deep dive on my favorite new members of the bat-family.

Damion Scott and Robert Campanella are the main draws here. His art manages to be incredibly unique and exciting to read. Particularly with these stories.

”Batgirl #1” starts with very young Cassandra facing five heavy-duty thugs. David Cain is filming it with a high-speed camera. The thugs are standing on plastic. They are asking what the job they are here for is? There is a big knife and the thugs are supposed to try to cut the little girl.

Next we see a slightly older Cassandra working out with Barbara Gordon (in a wheelchair) with escrima sticks. Barbara wins this fight. Barbara tells her to go study while she updates her computer files. Creating a new Batgirl file and renaming hers to ‘Original Batgirl’.

We get the origin of Batgirl. No known parents or name. Raised by master assassin David Cain who trained her day and night for combat. She knows at most ten words.

Some wonderful flashback scenes, I mean not of good events but beautifully drawn.

Barbara asks Batman if he’s moving her along too quickly. She’s only seventeen. He asks her who she reminds her of. Barbara says ‘you’. He tells her that David Cain experimented with infants to adapt the language center of their brain to interpret physical movement as a language. She can ‘read’ your body language. Cain never taught her stick fighting. Batman did, last week. Took five minutes.

Batman takes her out at night for training.

There’s are some unanswered questions and some rather vague things in the artwork. Not quite sure who some characters are that seem to show up in the flashbacks and again later. I’m okay with that. The artwork is so good that I don’t feel like I’m losing anything in the story.

It’s just an amazing beginning. Moody and evocative.

5 stars.
