Retributor Jeremiah Brandt has already riled up the zombie cavalry and he’s still angry over losing a huge bounty on a clan of serial killers. So when the Helena Cattlemen’s Association asks for help with a werewolf he jumps at the chance to take it on.There are a few little kinks to work through first before he can get down to the hunt–starting with zombies, a revengeful sister, and cold bath water. But the hunter soon becomes the hunted as Brandt discovers that his past mistakes have come back haunt him.
This is like 2 of my favorite genres mashed up together, historical fiction and paranormal. We have creatures that go bump in the night that are roaming the old west. To keep them in check we have Jeremiah Brandt, a Retributor. A Retributor is a bit like a bounty hunter, but for paranormal creatures. Our fellow Jeremiah drinks too much, smokes to much, and gives zero fucks except he has a soft spot for Grace, the innkeeper's daughter and his ex wife, Marigold, who was turned into a vampire. Personally I think Jeremiah is fun, flaws and all. He did get his ass kicked all over hell and creation in this book, but eventually he prevails, which was nice. I was worried for awhile on whether he was going to live through this book, but he did and I believe he will be on his way to Salt Lake City to confront a very ancient vampire who did some really bad things. The next novel should be fun!
Solid second entry in the Hellgate, Montana series. Oh man I hope there's going to be another!
The narrative flow is pretty different compared to the first one in the series; whereas I thought the first one felt like a 'Monster of the Week' kind of setup, this one focused more on one story. Though this could have made it feel like a totally different author, it didn't. Halsey's voice is strong as ever, the characters get a little more fleshed out (literally in some cases! Poor Jeremiah!!!), and the world becomes even more real.
