Spell of the Ball is an anthology of 8 different short Halloween stories written by couple of my favorite authors and introduced me to several new ones as well. I purchased this book as I wanted to read A Charming Death by Tonya Kappes (Magical Cures series), and Mission Impawsible by Melanie James (a novella, which begins where Karma, Inc., finished).
A Charming Death (do us part) by Tonya Kappes: I am an avid Tonya Kappes fan and enjoy all things Charming. The inclusion of A Charming Death was the main reason why I purchased this book. A Charming Death by Tonya is truly amazing! It's been a charming ride following the romance of June Heal and the town sheriff Oscar Park. The twists and turns leading to their wedding day will not disappoint! Quirky and loveable characters, lively and colorful descriptions of their magical town and the element of mystery will make you want to visit Whispering Falls! Tonya Kappes is one of my favorite authors and I purchased this book to read about Oscar and Junes wedding. This was superbly written and I was captivated me from start. Happy tears were abundant with all the family history and love surrounding June and Oscar’s special day! June just wants to marry Oscar, the love of her life. Oscar and June are finally ready to tie the knot. First they must get past the Aunts' wedding planning and numerous strange happenings, each related in vivid detail. Finally, the wedding of June and Oscar! It’s been a long time coming and I was delighted to attend. Their wedding was perfect! I encourage you to go back to the beginning of the series and enjoy the entire love story. This is a quick read, yet, it has all the fun and mystery of a full length book packed into it that a novella. I’m looking forward to see what the future holds for the happy couple and can’t wait to learn more about the yellow ball! Ms. Kappes crafted fantastic ending to the story and I can't wait to see what adventures happen next.
Mission Impawsible by Melanie James: I believe this series is a new spin-off from James' Literal Leigh Romance series. This book begins where Karma, Inc., ended and follows Kelly, Gabe, and their friends as magical mayhem ensues. This is the other book in the anthology that I would call a favorite. Kelly and her man bear shifter Gabe are in a deep trouble in this story. Of course, witchcraft plays a part and “magical trouble” is never good. Gabe is a shifter but no one in town knows. Secrets may be revealed as a few more bear shifters are in town along with a crazy doctor. This book is filled with humor and fun!
The Witch's Halloween Hero by Kristen Painter: This short story is about a couple of the characters in her Nocturne Falls series (I love Stanhill from the 1st book and Corette from the 4th). I had wondered where they might be going and how they were going to end up. Corette and Stanhill have a date for the black and orange ball. Stanhill plans to propose to his love but a magic mishap causes Corette to forget who he is. Now has to convince her she loves him while waiting to see if her daughters can break the spell. This is Stanhill and Corette's happy ever after complete with some twists and turns that will keep you turning pages. You will fall in love with this town and all the characters. This short story about love and happiness. Funny, cute, short story.
Spirits, Hurricanes, and the Krewe of Ghoul by Deanna Chase: Series: Pyper Rayne (spin-off series of Jade Calhoun series). This is a delightful, enjoyable, funny Halloween story. This author is new to me, but I intend to read more of her works. The book is fast and funny with an unanticipated ending that left me wanting for more. This Halloween story is complete with lively ghosts (and Ida May a crazy ghost), witches, wizards, and crazy vampires, set on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. The Vampire Carver must find a bride. Piper, Ida May and the other ladies have been duped. Julius joins the party to lend a hand. This is the second book in the series. Now I have to read the first book as I loved this one!
One Charmed Evening by Rose Pressey: Rose Pressey is, also, a new author to me. I loved this short story. Trouble seems to find the leader of the underworld no matter where she goes. Halloween LaVeau is in New York with her friends, attending an awards ceremony where something is amiss. LaVeau is the underworld Halloween leader that encounters some strange things when ghost and magic intertwines together. This story is a quick read and will leave the reader wanting more.
Bad Moon Rising by Michele Bardsley Series: Angelica Mortis I didn’t care for this book. It falls into the erotica genre or classification that I personally don’t appreciate making it difficult to read. Angelica is a demon hunter with a drag queen friend, Graddie, and a wizard guardian. Angelica Mortis must make some difficult decisions and face her past secrets. There are two simultaneous stories, one with the Angelica and the other with another female protagonist who is grieving the loss of her fiancée. They ultimately merge in a very interesting way, with an unexpected twist. I had difficulty following the stories in the way they were presented. Those who appreciate erotica might like this story. I’d suggest that those who dislike this genre skip this story and enjoy the others.
Catatonic by Liz Schulte Series: Sekhmet Bounty (introduction of a spin-off series of Guardian & Jinn trilogies). There is something strange going on. Femi the Bounty hunter is on the case. Her mission is to determine why young women are falling asleep but not waking up. Strange things are happening with no explanation. Will Femi do what it takes to save the human race? You’ll have to read this story to find out.
Desperate Housewives of Olympus by Saranna DeWylde Series: Ambrosia Lane I'm not found of mythology related literature so this book did not hold my interest. This book was well written and included twists on gods and goddesses typically of this genre. However, it contains paranormal erotica. If that interests you, be sure to check this story out. I will read any future anthologies including this genre and I may develop an appreciation for similar books.
Overall, I thought the collection of short stories was superb! As a reader, you get to preview works by 8 talented authors representing a variety of genres. I'm a dedicated reader of several of the authors and familiar with their writing talent, but several others were new to me. This compilation is an ideal format to expose readers to authors across multiple genres by combining their stories. I’m giving the anthology a five star rating because all of the books all superbly written, including those that are not in genres I prefer to read. Every book captured my interest and had “enchanted” characters with well written plots/story lines. Several of the stories were somewhat difficult to follow given I have not read books from the series those stories were related to. All but two of the books are clean; the exceptions are Bad Moon Rising and Desperate Housewives of Olympus. If you are a fan of one of these authors/series then there is no question that you should purchase this anthology for your favorite author’s story. Additionally, this book has something in it for everyone and you might discover the works of authors new to you that expand your world of great books. You will not be disappointed. A perfect compilation for Halloween!
Full Disclosure: I purchased this book as several stories were written by authors I consider to be some of my “favorites”. I did received a complimentary copy of one book included in this anthology in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed in this review are my own.
