Men in Uniform #0.5

I Need a Hero

Rate this book
Sergeant Oliver Martinez joined the military to serve his country—not plan parties. But after a run-in with his commanding officer, Oliver is suddenly responsible for the Alpha Dogs Training Program’s upcoming charity event. Worse, he’s got to work with the bossiest, sexiest woman he's ever met—who just happens to be the general’s daughter.

When it comes to military men, Evelyn Reynolds is not interested. And with the opportunity to launch her new PR firm at the charity event, she doesn't have time for some sexy, arrogant jerk with a hero complex. Evelyn is determined to keep things professional—if only she can ignore how Oliver’s muscles fill out a t-shirt and the infuriating way he makes her heart pound.

But when tempers flare and a scorching kiss turns into so much more, Oliver and Evelyn will have to decide if this attraction is forever…or just for now.

From the time I could put a Disney Book cassette into my little stereo, and read along, books have held a fantastic distraction. When I was eleven, I decided I wanted to be one of those magical people that brought stories to life. Devouring a book a day sometimes, my first romance novel stuck with me. I've always been a sucker for a happy ending (and the great romantic gesture)and that's what I try to put into my stories. I am so honored to be a part of Avon, and am so excited to have my own dreams coming true.

This is my first experience with Codi Gary and I think I will add check out the next book for sure. While there was a pretty heavy sexual attraction in the beginning -- which I usually didn't care about -- but I admit that I was easily taken with the concept of Alpha Dog training, in addition to a dog named Beast which Oliver ended up with. That dog has a character! There was one scene involving Beast that just grabbed my heart and my highlight of the book.

Wait? My highlight of the story was with the dog? How about the romance?

Well, the romance was okay, it was good enough to start the series. However with this being a novella, everything happened a little bit fast and not enough character or relationship development. I come to expect that which was why I thought the best part was with the dog *grin*

As a HUGE fan of Codi Gary's 2 other series, I can tell you I was nervous to dive into a THIRD series by her. Could she do it again? Could she win my heart with her words the way she did in Loco, Texas and Rock Canyon, Idaho? The answer?!? HELL YES!

You find yourself at the Alpha Dog Training Center with Dean (Sparks) and Tyler (Best) when they are joined by the reluctant Sergeant Oliver Martinez. Oliver was removed from the field and placed on PR duty until General Reynolds deemed him "fit" to return to regular duty. Enter the beautiful, Evelyn Reynolds into the picture. (Note the last name!) Eve is the publicist hired to help with the event that Oliver has been assigned to during his punishment.

The attraction was immediate. But, neither were going to act on it. He was her type, and she wasn't his. The General created some other issues, as well. He was stuck in this task, and it was far from what he wanted to do. He liked to be out and about in the field, while Eve craved stability and an uneventful home life. Falling for a military man - like her father - was OUT OF THE QUESTION. But, she couldn't get Oliver out of her mind.

"There are no details to tell. I don't even know if I like him, it's more that I just-"
"Want to strip him naked and eat chocolate off his abs?" Megan offered.
Eve thought about that, grinning. "His butt too. He's got a great butt."

So begins the slow build-up. Man, does Codi write a mean build-up. But the passion behind Oliver's eyes and his seduction skills - Eve is a goner!

"I'll tell you one thing, Oliver Martinez. The next time you want to seduce me in Spanish, you better be prepared to follow through." <---- I want to be friends with Eve. She is so strong-willed and sassy! We could hang out in her messy apartment and just laugh!

Meeting Sparks, Best, Megan and everyone else - you get a real feel for all the emotions behind having an over-protective General of a Dad, friends who would do anything for you, passions that drive you to go the distance to acheive your dreams and falling hard for a person who is a complete 180 from your plans BUT meeting the family who raised them and falling even harder, seeing him change and grow as a person right before your very eyes, sneaking BACK into your room so his Mom doesn't know you snuck OUT in the first place.

This story is genuine. It grabs your heart, straps it in and takes it for a bumpy ride. It wouldn't be a romance novella if it didn't. This story leaves you craving to know more about the others you got a sample of and wishing you could get dirty in the sand with your very own Oliver, after having his mom's enchiladas first. *insert a squeal here*

When it gets closer to the actual release day, I will post my full review with photos on our blog, and post the link here.

I will leave you with my final thoughts: 1) I love the relationships these characters hold with their animal co-stars. It truly is such an important topic, and the author sheds such a wonderful light to the importance of those companionships. 2) The Spanish mumblings and rumblings is perfect. Adds just the right amount of spice to the strong macho type that is Oliver. 3) I love how the heroine is not this cookie cutter perfect woman. She drives like a crazy person, she is messy and all around NORMAL! How refreshing. 4) And last, but not least - it flowed so well that you felt like you were living the story. This is what Codi does so well: she can tell a story so effortlessly you forget you are not in the facility with the guys training the dogs or cleaning up the mess made after leaving an untrained dog with you couch! Enjoy what is sure to be Codi's third incredibly successful series.

Evelyn Reynolds is starting her new PR company and the General who is her father is helping her out by letting her run the Alpha Dog Training Program's charity event. She has swore to herself never to date someone who doesn't have time for her including anyone in the military. She wants someone with a regular 8-5 job. Meeting Sergeant Oliver Martinez makes her want to throw caution to the wind for a chance to be happy. Too bad the general is not in agreement.

I loved everything about this novella. It's the perfect beginning of a series. I know I won't miss any of the future books.
Evie and Oliver had great chemistry. Their story was full of banter, great supportive characters, awesome animals and sexy times. Just the perfect combo! It took me just one second to fall in love with Beast.
As a side note, Mrs Gary got all the Spanish phrases right.

"There is nothing I don't like-like about you."

Cliffhanger: No

I love Cody Gary's books. This one sounded like it was right up my alley. I love military romances and I love romances that involve the characters having pets. Unfortunately I just didn't love this book.

Don't get me wrong, the book was very enjoyable. I've just read other books by the author I've loved more.

I had a hard time feeling the connection between Oliver and Eve. Yes I got that they were attracted to each other but I guess I wish more time had been spent developing that relationship. Everything just felt like it was happening too quickly.

Overall, this was a good quick read and I can't wait to read the author's next book.

LOVED THIS! Codi Gary combined two of my favorite things in this book: men in uniform and rescue dogs. I totally swooned for sexy Sergeant Oliver Martinez, and I loved watching him fall in love with feisty Eve. Throw in a big slobbery couch-destroying shelter dog named Beast, and I am a happy, happy reader! :) This novella had plenty of lough out loud moments and also plenty of tender moments that tugged at my heartstrings. I am so excited for the rest of this new series!

I was pleasantly surprised by this story! I liked Eve and Oliver's chemistry, and while things progressed very quickly for the two of them, I found that it was pretty logical and realistic for them to do so. The backdrop of the Alpha Dog program was actually a pretty good one, and felt rather unique as well as realistic to me. The supporting characters were funny and I was looking forward to learning more about them! My chief complaint was that, due to its brevity, the story wasn't as fleshed out as I would have wanted, but it is my hope that we'll get some of the blanks filled in with subsequent stories.

Eve Reynolds is determined to make her new PR business a success, and wants to prove to her tough as nails general father that she can make it on her own. So, when he offers her her first big job, she jumps at the chance, not only will it help put her name on the map, but also prove to her dad that she can handle all the responsibility that goes along with it. He hires her to host a charity event for the Alpha Dogs Training Program, which is something that she knows she can handle, but what she doesn't expect is the handsome soldier that he has appointed to help her plan the event. Working along side of the sexy soldier should be a piece of cake for her since she has officially sworn off dating them...right?

In a attempt to rescue a few ladies from a annoying drunk at the bar, Oliver Martinez steps in to play hero and tries to remedy the situation and ends up decking his commanding officer's son. This little stunt has landed him in hot water with his commanding officer, and also found him assigned to a new post at the Alpha Dogs Training Center. As part of his new duties he is expected to help plan the upcoming charity event for the center, which puts him working along side one of the most beautiful, and bossiest, women he's ever seen. When he learns she is his commanding officers' daughter he immediately decides she is hands off. But there is just something about this raven haired beauty that has gotten under his skin and has him reconsidering his hands off approach...

This is the first installment in the "Men in Uniform" series and also the first book I have read by this author. And I have to say Ms. Gary has created a literary masterpiece with this one, it had all the makings of the perfect romance story and left me looking forward to future visits to the series! I loved reading Oliver and Eve's story and I cannot wait to see what she has in store the other characters in the series. I love a good enemies to lovers story, and this one DEFINITELY hit the mark, I loved the heated banter between Oliver and Eve, they had me laughing and smiling the whole way through!! Definitely one that should be added to the tops of everyone's reading lists, it is sure to satisfy all your reading needs...and then some!!

Nelle's NightstandThis review was originally posted on Nelle's NightStand

Evelyn Reynolds is the General's daughter. She is extremely messy, very bossy, stubborn and independent but still very close to her father. She wants a stable man, one who comes home at night and is in a "safe" profession.

Sergeant Oliver Martinez is a badass MP Sergeant. All he wants is to help people. He's very sassy and arrogant and he's not a bit shy. He sees what he wants and goes for it, consequences be damned.

So, He got into a bar fight and is being punished by being sent to Alpha Dog Training Program to help with publicity for a charity event. She's the event coordinator and his boss. It was an instant attraction on both their parts, but she fights it because he is military. I could feel the chemistry in the room with them! Alpha Dog Training Program is a two-part rehabilitation and rescue. They have troubled teens that are sent there to train rescue dogs to become military dogs. The Adult trainers are buddies of his and they give him a dog to train. Beast is an adorable pit bull that has been abandoned by his previous owners. Let's just say Beast gives him a run for his money, that's for sure!

This is my first time to read Codi Gary. I love reading about military men though so I picked it up. Her writing style is a bit different than I usually read. Her characters tell it like it is in a very clear everyday language. Having been around military men for the past 14 years, I know they have a way of speaking that other men don't. It's very clear that she has their lingo and attitude down to a T. Although I call suspect that a Sergeant would report to a General as that's way up in the chain of command, it didn't detract from the story at all. The supporting characters were interesting and engaging. I'm going to add the rest of the series to my TBR.

* Referred to my husband and he said, yes, it is possible to report to a General so, please, disregard that. :) *

I Need a Hero is the prequel novella to author Codi Gary's latest series entitled Men in Uniform, plus this also happens to be my very first Codi Gary read. With a hot guy in (and out) of uniform who has a genuine love for his country and his family, an independent woman who wants someone who puts her first, and a couch-chewing dog in need of a home, this book may have captured my attention in the beginning but it captured my heart by the time I was done reading it. Novellas are often much shorter than full-length novels, and sadly, there's a tendency for the story to feel rushed or lacking in terms of details and the like. Same goes for character development, since it's difficult to pack lot in a limited number of pages. But, I'm happy to say that this particular novella gave a complete story with characters you get to know pretty well.

Oliver and Eve were main characters that were easy to like, both with a strong sense of family and are close to friends they've known for some time and trust completely. Eve may have come off as a bit reticent but when it came to Beast, the supposedly ugliest dog in the Alpha Dogs Training Program, the woman overturned whatever pending negative opinion I may have had forming because of her resistance to Oliver. Now, Oliver was simply a good guy and it's an absolute bonus that he happens to share the same name as my baby boy (aka my dog). Aside from his love story with Eve, I couldn't help but sigh happily as his own love story with Beast evolved. This novella also introduces readers to other characters that I'm sure we'll be seeing in future books. I hope those will be just as good as I Need a Hero, which gets 4.5 stars, rounded off to five stars. ♥

Posted on What I'm Reading

First thing first, when I look at the title I think of Bonnie Tyler's I Need a Hero. Yep, totally rocking out to 1980s music. Moving on. This a great little novella. I Love OLIVER. He's just a yummy hero in a uniform. Anyway, he gets into a little trouble with his commanding officer and he gets sent down to Alpha Dog Training. In the story, he's kind of bummed by his punishment, but then he starts find his groove along with a girl. However, this girl happens to be general's daughter. Crap! This can't bode well for the guy.

We meet Evelyn, who can't stand military guys. Even though she has grown up around them her whole life. There are two types of women when it comes to this situation: 1) They love the military life so much they decided they want to marry someone like their dad. 2) They want to steer clear of any military man. Of course Evie falls into 2, that whole overbearing father thing. When she meets Oliver, she automatically places him in don't touch, don't even think about category. She's extremely rude to Oliver. I almost didn't like her, because of her preconceived notions about military guys. Yes, there is more to why she can't stand them. Fortunately, Oliver calls her out it, and start to form a nice friendship.

I Need a Hero was quick and fun read. We also got to know the guys who run the program of Alpha Dog, which I can't wait for more.

Side Note: I wasn't sure if the guys were Air Force or Army. Here's why: The military instillation was called a base, but when I read Oliver is in the Army. Those who are in the Army don't call the military instillation a base, they call it a post. Now if they were station at an Air Force base for a reason like veterinary (by the way AF doesn' have that, but Army does) then I can understand. I feel better.

Codi Gary's I Need a Hero is a delightful introduction to what I think will be a sweet and sassy new series. In I Need a Hero, readers are introduced to a group a brand new characters, starting off with Oliver and Evelyn. I loved them. Their flirtatious banter was just enough to get me smiling. Both strong and resilient characters that knew from the start it was inevitable... They will fall for each other so why fight it? I Need a Hero had everything I look for in a Codi Gary book. Lovable characters that find themselves in the best situations... Fun and witty banter... Great friendships... And much more. However, I would have been over the moon with this little novella if it was a full length book. While it is the perfect length to give readers a little nibble of Codi's fantastic writing, I felt the short length left me wanting much more in terms of the budding relationship between Oliver and Eve. I could tell that there was more to their story and I desperately wanted to spend more time with them. One of the reasons why I'm excited that it is the beginning of a new series is because I hope we'll be able to revisit them later on. Plus we get to spend time with some adorable rescue doggies and hot military men!

I truly enjoyed I Need a Hero. I'm so excited to dive back into Codi's writing with this brand new series. If you are new to her books and adore contemporary romance, pick this novella up. Not only do you get a taste for Codi's writing, but you also get a sweet and short romance in the process.

I think this book was a excellent start to a brand new military romance series. Evelyn has sworn off military men along with lawyers, CEOs and many others. She wants a man who has a 9-5 and is home for dinner every night. But after meeting Oliver all what she thought she wanted goes out the window.

Oliver is punished by the general for having a fight in bar. As his punishment he must help Evelyn put together a charity for alpha dog training center. While these two have an instant attraction it isn't going to be easy to have a relationship with the generals daughter.

I thought this was a cute light read that was the perfect start off to what will be a wonderful new series. From the beginning I loved the characters and not just Evelyn and Oliver. This story contains funny banter and lots of men in uniform.

The relationship between the two main characters was cute because they seem so different. Although Evelyn isn't a clean freak and Oliver seems like one they make it work. I loved the playfulness they had with one another in and out of bed.

One of my favorite parts of this book was when Oliver goes to take a shower and his dog beast decided to rip up the sofa and leave the stuffing on the floor. It reminded me of my dog and her stuffed toys.

I recommend reading this prequel and getting to know these amazing new characters. This new series will be on my radar and I can't wait!!

“Wrecking his career over a woman would be beyond moronic.”

Codi Gary excels at small town romances and I Need A Hero did not disappoint. I have been a fan of Codi’s through each f her series and was extremely excited to see her writing a new novella series surrounding men in uniform. From the start of this sweet and sexy novella I was hooked and I had a silly smile on my face the whole way through.

“I’m afraid that if I keep letting myself get close to you, I’m going to forget that I don’t want these things because I’ll want you more.”

After being involved in an altercation with a civilian, tough guy MP Oliver, is punished by sent to the new K9 unit to help plan a charity event. Forced to work with the sassy and in charge event planner , Evelyn. What starts out as the two trading barbs and butting heads turns into an undeniable chemistry. But being raised by a dad who was in the military has Evelyn convinced the last thing she wants is a military man. IS Oliver the man who can make her see the risk is worth is?

“I’ll tell you one thing, Oliver Martinez. The next time you want to seduce me in Spanish, you better be prepared to follow through.”

Fast, fun and full of heart I Need A Hero will leave you happy and excited for more from Codi. Her men are hot and her heroines strong and relatable. I loved this first installment and cannot wait for more from the exciting new series.

Short, sweet, with a bit of sexual tension thrown in...and just an all around wonderful story--how's that for a review? More? Okay...

Even with this being novella length, I Need a Hero has well developed characters and a good storyline that kept my interest and had me right there next to Eve rooting her and Oliver on. They are fun together, not overly serious, and I love how they both care so much for Beast (it's always the funny-looking, rambunctious dogs that are the most lovable, right?).

My favorite character was definitely Oliver, a fantastically sexy alpha male who exudes protectiveness and who I easily connected with as I was reading. He's the type of guy I would fall for (if I wasn't already married of course), and I found him charming yet strong and tough. Watching his relationship with Eve grow was entertaining...as was seeing him bond with Beast.

Eve's preconceived notions of the type of guy she doesn't want to fall for are in serious jeopardy when she and Oliver meet, which is where the fun begins, and watching the two of them navigate their feelings for each other makes for some pretty entertaining reading.

A definite fun, sweet read with a bit of spice thrown in for good measure, I truly enjoyed I Need a Hero and would definitely recommend it for contemporary romance fans, and also for military romance fans. This was a 4.5-star read for me, and I can't wait to read the upcoming books in this series! 18+ for adult language and sexual content.

**I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads.**

Oliver Martinez is an MP in the Army. When he was off duty he subdued a civilian at a bar who took the first swing. Unbeknownst to him it was the General's son, which put him in hot water. He gets taken off his duty and placed at Alpha Dog Training Program, which is a program that takes shelter dogs and retrains them for specialty jobs in the military, fire, police etc. The dogs are being trained by troubled kids. Oliver's job while he is there is to work with a PR person to set up their upcoming charity event. Oliver is friends with the guys running the program and hopes to be in and out as fast as possible, that is until he meets Evelyn.

I enjoyed the slow build up between Oliver and Evelyn. The sexual chemistry was high. I loved Oliver's mother and my heart broke for Beast. Light quick romantic read.

Absolutely adorable story, with fun and charming characters, and sweet dogs, who steal your heart away.
This story is truly a feel-good romance, I had a smile on my face the whole time I was reading it. The characters have charisma, the banter is hilarious, they are not afraid to use their words in any situation, defending whom they love.
Oliver and Eve are so perfect together, they both have flaws, but the kind heart, giving nature, and the stubborn streak in both of them does not give up easily, and they are willing to fight for what they want. The steaming physical attraction between them develops into something much more, as they spent time together, while working for the benefit.
There are many laugh out loud moments, especially with Beast, oh that dog with all his problems melted my heart completely. Word of warning, this story might make you want to run for the local shelter to adopt a pet!
This is the first story in the series, a novella, and this series definitely looks like something entertaining and fun to follow. Can't wait to read the next story, cause this was so delightful!

This is my first book by Cody Gary. I don’t usually read military romance books, but let me tell you I was surprised. I totally enjoyed it and it was a perfect read for a Sunday, yes I read it all in one sit.

Sergeant Oliver Martinez gets punished by the General for getting into a fight at a bar, so he is removed from the field, and placed at the Alpha Dog Training Center, where he is set to help Evelyn Reynolds with a charity function.

Problem arises when Oliver finally meets Evelyn, an attractive young woman who thinks has her future already planned and getting involved with a military man – like her father – was absolutely out of the question. Both are stubborn and don’t like to relent into anything, so what happens when they have to work together, trying to leave feelings aside, but the attraction between them is undeniable.

This is a novella, the first of a new series called Men in Uniform, I’m going to recommend you give it a shot, I’m sure you will enjoy it as much as I did. I will also be looking forward for One Lucky Hero, the next book.

What a fun and flirty, but sexy and sweet book this is. Though only a novella, there is a good amount of background and family that gives a fuller rounder edge. Beast was a great addition to the story and made the speed of the connection more believable, and enjoyable. I found my emotions catapulted from laughing to almost shedding a tear, heating up to thinking they had blown it again. It has some lovely humour in it, which made it an absolutely delightful way to pass a few hours.

An excellent start to what should be a great new series from this author. This is a quick fun read and was completely entertaining. I loved Oliver and Evelyn. Oliver is temporarily assigned to work with the Alpha Dogs Training Program and Evelyn is handling the PR for and upcoming fundraising event for the program. Having to work together may be more than either one can handle, or maybe it might be the best thing that ever happened to either one of them!

This is a wonderfully written story and one I would recommend to everyone.

Amazing beginning to a new series! Oliver is a sexy and determined soldier who doesn't give up on Eva even though it might mean his career in the army is over. Eva is equally determined to not fall for Oliver, but she's no match for his charm - or his canine companion Beast. Cute, fun and sexy, I loved every page and the sneak peek at the next book!

This story was undeniably sweet and teasingly hot. Both of them having to push barriers Eve set for herself and let her heart lead was something I'm sure many of us have encountered. I don't think anybody could not melt for Oliver and his fierce heart especially with Beast by his side ;).

I really enjoyed this book. The storyline and the characters are well developed and believable. At times I found myself laughing because of the attitude of the semi hot headed man and the strong, confident woman. Who would have thought this story would go where it went due to who the woman's father is. This was a fun easy read.

This sexy novella is the story of Oliver and Evelyn. Evelyn’s PR company is planning a charity event for the Alpha Dogs Training program. When her military father tasks one of his men, Oliver, to help with the charity event, she’s less than thrilled. The last thing she needs is a guy with a hero complex to help her out, but she can’t turn down the assistance. Oliver isn’t quite what she expects though – underneath his tough guy facade is a man with a heart and though they match wits with each other, they also can’t deny the attraction between them. But when Oliver’s assignment with the training program is over, he’ll be back on active duty. Evelyn’s sworn to herself that a relationship with a military man is not what she wants for her future. Can Oliver get her to change her mind?

I really enjoyed this story. Though it’s not very long (just over 100 pages or so) you get a good introduction to the main characters, their history and backgrounds and what has made them into the people they are today. Evelyn’s grown up with the military due to her father the General – she knows what it’s like to be on the move, to worry about a loved one, and she’s determined to not have that in her future husband. She’s happy to be settled in one place, and her PR firm is just getting off the ground. The Alpha Dogs training program, a program that takes dogs from shelters and other care facilities and trains them for the military, search and rescue and other police type ventures is a program she’s very supportive of, and organizing their charity auction is something she’s delighted to do for personal and professional reasons. I liked her character as a strong woman, with a few flaws of course (housekeeping is not her forte) but a good and friendly person. Oliver comes across as a fairly typical alpha male, but with a caring heart, as evidenced by his close relationship with his family. He’s working at the Alpha Dogs program as a punishment of sorts for being involved in a bar brawl with a civilian but in fact, with two of his best friends as trainers and running the company, he’s not all that unhappy to be there. And meeting Evelyn is a definite plus, despite the fact that she’s the General’s daughter and off limits. He’s attracted to her despite his best intentions, and it isn’t long before their chemistry ignites and they share some steamy scenes together. Yet his intention up to now has always been to return to active duty when his current assignment is done. Taking someone else’s feelings into account and considering his future with another person has never been something he’s had to do before, so as his relationship with Evelyn deepens, he’s going to have to make some tough choices.

There is a third main character in the story in fact – one of the dogs that comes into the training program ends up with Oliver. Oliver names him Beast (an apt description) and there are several scenes of which he is a key part (some of them quite humorous, others more emotional). For dog lovers, this story will definitely appeal, with the concept of the training program, and the chance to rescue dogs and give them a better future. Oliver’s two friends who run the program were great secondary characters, fulfilling the male bromance quotient of the story and definitely worthy of their own stories. All in all, it was an enjoyable read. 4 stars.

The first in a new military-themed romance brings us the story of Evelyn and Oliver, in a story that shows what you think you want isn’t always what you need, or get.

Evelyn is determined to have a relationship with a serious 9 – 5 man, one that isn’t in the military, or a cop, or lawyer or or or. She’s the daughter of a General, and is determined that her life will be settled and diferent from everything she has known to this point. Starting her own PR company, she is determined to make her first big event a success, not only to start her company out with a bang, but to prove to her father that she is on the right track. The Alpha Dog Training Program event will be fabulous, even though she has to work with that clean-freak MP who sets her nerves alight.

Oliver is an MP stationed on the base, reporting to Evelyn’s father, the General. After a good Samaritan act gone horribly wrong, he is relieved of duty, but assigned to work with Evelyn to make the event a success. Oliver is a bit of a clean-freak, he likes things the way he wants them, and he’s never met a more bossy, opinionated woman in his life. And he’s met many. Worse still, she’s one of the sexiest women he’s met in a long time, and she is completely hands off.

The thing is, everything about Oliver ticks each box in Evelyn’s chequelist, but the fact he’s in the military makes him not worthy of her consideration. Mostly.
"There are no details to tell. I don't even know if I like him, it's more that I just-"
"Want to strip him naked and eat chocolate off his abs?" Megan offered.
Eve thought about that, grinning. "His butt too. He's got a great butt."

So we have the polar opposites and clashes, plenty of heat and a slowly developing understanding between the two as they realize that they can work together productively, and actually enjoy their time together. And perhaps that spark, that flame is signifying more.

These two are real and complete in this story: Evelyn is a bit of a loose cannon with her spark for life, her inability to take things slow and her lack of housekeeping skills, or the desire to change that. Oliver’s family and his own relationship with them is wonderful, his rather naughty sofa-snacking dog and his good-natured protectiveness for all he meets are obvious and apparent throughout. Neatly adding in family, friends and animals to build the world around these two provides wonderful insight into the characters, and everyone feels so very real and plausible, you want to have them as friends and neighbors. Surprisingly, for a novella-length story, it never feels rushed or forced, this is simply a story that flows well to an inevitable happy ending full of heart, a touch of heat and plenty of moments to laugh.

I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via Edelweiss for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility.

I Need a Hero is a cute novella length story that is the start of Codi Gary's new Men in Uniform series. This short and sexy read was fun and had some really great moments. It wasn't my favorite read from Gary, but it was still one that I liked quite a bit.

After getting into some trouble Sergeant Oliver Martinez is sent to help plan a charity event for the Alpha Dogs Training Program. Just when things appear to be as bad as they can get, Oliver meets the woman that he has to work with, Evelyn Reynolds. Though the attraction between them is instant, Eve is the daughter of General Reynolds, the man that sent Oliver to the program in the first place. Evelyn wants nothing to do with military men, and she definitely doesn't want to get personal with the man helping her plan the event that can help launch her new PR career. But with the chemistry between her and Oliver and them spending more time together, they find it hard to keep things professional and soon are giving into the attraction between them. But is it just a quick fling, or could they have something more?

I really liked the heat and chemistry between these two, and I felt like Oliver and Eve's attraction was clear right from the start. They definitely wanted each other, even though they both tried to fight it. The one thing I struggled with though was their connection. As much as I wanted to feel more between these two, everything seemed to happen so fast. I wanted to see more feelings developing between them, and I just had a hard time seeing anything real happening besides their physical attraction to one another. I think a lot of that was because of the length of this story and the fact that there were only so many pages to make that happen. Had they previously known each other I think that I might have felt differently, but since they just met here I just don't think there was enough time to really see a strong relationship form.

I did love Beast though, and I thought that he stole the show. It was a lot of fun to read about him and I enjoyed the Alpha Program which I found really interesting. Beast had a lot of personality and I definitely think that he was the high point here. I wish that I had been able to see more happening between Oliver and Eve, because I think that this story had a lot of potential. I am interested to see where this series goes though as I really like Codi Gary's books and I liked the rest of the characters that were introduced here. I will definitely look for more in this series and from Codi Gary in the future. If you are looking for a short and sexy read I would give this one a shot. It was fun and light, and I think as long as you aren't expecting anything really deep or emotional that it is something most readers will enjoy.

This is a great way of starting a new series. I really enjoyed this book. Now this book Evelyn, a very sassy military brat that is forced to plan a charity event with a cocky and charming Oliver. Though there was an attraction between them, Evelyn still won’t give into her urges because Oliver is like his farther, a commanding officer. Having moved around a lot as a child and having been without her farther for years one end, she just doesn’t want a life like that. Though in the end the attraction and emotional bond forming brought them together. Obviously with the help of some compromising and a dog.

I that Eve and Oliver have a soft and strong side. I like how Eve is so independent and brave and she melts around the beast. Oliver always go into bar fights and bragging to his friends but he adores his family and would always go the extra mile. I also fell in love with the dog. So we have two polar opposites and clashes, plenty of heat and a slowly developing understanding between the two as they realize that they can work together productively.

This novella had such a great balance of sexy and sweet moments and trust me this book was such a fun read! I wish this book was a full novel so I could get some more time alone with this characters. I’m all for an entire series of sexy military men and women so I can’t wait to see what Codi Gary cooks up for the next book. If you love men in uniform as much as I do and are looking for a sweet, funny romance with a dash of heat then this book is for you!

Sorry this review is short but I’m at work and obviously I can’t write a long review while I’m at work because I don’t have such a long lunch hour.

Sweet, Sassy, & Alluring. Codi Gary has brought her unique voice to a whole new group of characters that will make you swoon for these men in uniform!

Book Review

In I Need a Hero, author Codi Gary embarks on a new series centering around the military and a training facility that rehabilitates shelter dogs.

As the story opens, Sergeant Oliver Martinez is being reprimanded by his commanding officer for a situation at a bar which lead to the arrest of a civilian. Needless to say, Oliver will be paying the price for his actions and that price is working on a charity event for Alpha Dogs Training Program. What he doesn’t know is that he will be working with Evelyn Reynolds his commanding officer’s daughter.

Though the two have an instant attraction, Evelyn is not interested in dating military men and Oliver doesn’t want to rock the boat with her father. Will they? Won’t they? These are the questions that will come up as the two work closely together. Add into the mix Beast, Oliver’s dog from Alpha Dogs, who has a love-fest with Evelyn himself and you can see that this is going to be interesting. With a great combination of sexiness, wit, and crazy dog antics, this book is one enjoyable read.

Let’s face it. To me, Codi Gary can do no wrong. Her ability to capture strong, intelligent yet flawed women and put them up against equally smart, capable hot as hell men is something that I have loved in her previous books. Though I was fearful that the military background would take away some of the charm of Codi’s writing, I was proved wrong. The author manages to fill the pages with dialog that is real as well as entertaining. In addition, she creates characters that will engage you from page one and have you pulling for the happily ever after at the end.

I cannot wait for the next book in the series! Congrats Codi…I think you have another hit series on your hand. Bring on the cute dogs!

Codi Gary is back with a new series about military men and the women who can't help but love them. In I NEED A HERO, Evelyn Reynolds, a sassy military brat, is forced to plan a charity event with the sometimes cocky but always charming Oliver Martinez. Though there's attraction zinging between them from the get-go Eve refuses to give in knowing that Oliver is a lifer, just like his commanding officer, her father. Having moved around a lot as a child and having been without her father for years on end, she just doesn't want that kind of future for herself. But in the end attraction and the emotional bond forming between them bring them together, with a little help from some compromise and a behemoth of a dog.

I love that Eve and Oliver have both soft and strong sides to them. Eve can be so independent and brave but she completely melts when she's around Beast. Oliver is always getting into bar fights and bragging to his friends but he adores his family and always goes the extra mile to do what's right. I also loved the use of animals at Alpha Dogs and Oliver's adopted dog Beast. We all know I love a good matchmaking pet in romance novels! He's another character that just seems intimidating and powerful on the outside but is emotionally scarred and so loving on the inside. I was on the brink of tears when he was rushed to the vet and that's all do to the emotion and connection Codi Gary can inspire in her readers.

This novella has such a great balance of sexy and sweet moments and it's a whole lot of fun to read! I just wish this had been a full novel so I could get some more alone time with all of these characters! Also, I can't be the only one who gets Bonnie Tyler's 'I Need A Hero' stuck in my head every time I read the title. I'm all for an entire series of sexy military men (and women, maybe) and can't wait to see what Codi Gary cooks up for the next book in the series! If you love men in uniform as much as I do and are looking for a sweet, funny romance with a nice dash of heat, I NEED A HERO is one you definitely need to pick up.
