Be warned - ranting ahead..
Well, first of all it seems that Elle Casey and I have a problem with second books of a series. The Bourbon Street Boys series was another series with that problem and exactly like here: I loved the first book - and hated the second one. But while I couldn't finish "Wrong Place, Right Time", this book here started really good and I thought it was a one-time thing but then it began..
I have to say, I liked Sarah quite fine in the beginning and the more I read the more I started to dislike her. And with Jeremy, he was a drunken mess in the first book who wouldn't let his siblings help him and when they tried, he simply disappeared. I can understand grief and I can see that he lost the love of his life and wanted to die as well - but I could never understand that he gave up his daughter without any thoughts at all. She was all he had after his wife dies and if Laura was just half the incredible woman he painted her, then she would have been devastated that he left Cassie. It was a piece of her, left behind while she was gone.
Okay, I'm a huge fan of insta-love when it is done well as it was in the first book between Leah and James who hit it off. But it did not work here! How can a man, grieving to no end, drinking himself to obliviousness to forget, doing drugs and with no care of others go from that to - BAMM - wow, hello hot chick, wanna have some fun? And it was like that. He stumbles into the cabin, dirty and smelling like a homeless person, whining and crying about how unfair his life is and how great his love to his soulmate Laura was and that he will never find such a great love again. When Sarah tries to talk some sense into him, he is angry and yells at her, throwing things and leaving in a huff -- only to come back, apologising and then he starts to flirt with her, chasing her around the room, laughing and joking the next moment? I'm sorry but did aliens kidnap and brainwash him? I was like: WTF?????
Jeremy goes from grieving to loving in hours and don't let me start on Sarah. He stumbles into the cabin like a madman, smelling like garbage and looking like he hadn't seen a bathroom in months and while she was disgusted, she also finds him hot. What I also find unbelievable was that she KNEW that his family was looking for him, had hired a private detective and was worried sick that he was lying dead in some back row and she never thought to inform them that he was at the cabin? Hey, stop looking and worrying, he is here! No, this never crossed her mind.
Oh and did I mention that he spoke to Laura all the time since she died? Yes, he hears her voice and talks to her and she talks back.. Hmm, sure. I would have him admitted after he told me that, especially when I know that he was doing drugs and drinking alcohol like it goes out of style soon. And then even more stranger things happen: Sarah also starts to see Lauras ghost. And when Jeremy leaves to get his life in order, the ghost suddenly tells her to call him and guess what? Jeremy is in the middle of a discussion with his dealer when she calls him but assures her that all is well and of course he stops immediately with the drugs. That would have been the moment to inform the family but again, she did not think about that.
And when I thought this was the strangest thing happening - guess what? Yes, suddenly the ghost strikes back and renders Sarah blind. Yes, blind. From one moment to the next, all she can see is black. But don't worry because Prince Alcoholic comes to the rescue and takes her to the hospital where she has surgery and then moves in with him and they are a happy couple because he assures her that he now takes care of her and not to worry ever again. And then, after two weeks, he proposes. Because he is sure that Laura wants them together so he feels he has to make Sarah his wife. What a romantic move! And to complete the happy family, of course he is now suddenly ready to be a father for Cassie, so hand over the baby already!!
This was the moment where I almost checked out. A man who drank alcohol for months and used drugs cannot heal overnight and without any professional help. Just because he is in love with Sarah now does not make him clean and you should think an attorney sees it the same way but again, that is not was happens here because Robinson is only too happy to hand guardianship back to the father because, look at him! He is ready, can't you see? And don't talk about it any longer, don't be a spoilsport and shut it.
The moment where I checked out and started to browse (because I do want to read Jana's story so I sucked it up and finished the last chapters) was when they confronted the family during the Spaghetti dinner. The way Jeremy handled the thing with Cassie - WAS NOT OKAY!
The night Laura died, Jeremy checked out and left. He left Cassie on Jana's and James' doorstep and LEFT, had no care what they did or how they handled it. Hell, he never even bothered to ask! He simply did not want the baby so they had to take care. For nine months, he tried to kill himself by drinking and doing drugs, never asking how his siblings handled his shit because he did not care. He screwed Jana totally over by leaving her with the baby. She had not choice but to put her whole life on hold and quit her job so she could care for her niece. She was only twenty-five but had to learn to be a mother since nobody else was there to step in. And then Jeremy comes back with Sarah and instead of going to Jana, thanking her for being so selfless and trying to explain that he feels ready now to be a father and that he wants Cassie back, he goes behind her back and visits Robinson the attorney who is only too happy to hand the child over because hey, Jeremy went to one AA meeting - he is cured now and totally able to care of a little child, no proof needed. Yes, I'm sure that's what every attorney would do in this case and of course judges always agree with that so no need for Jana to protest. They simply tell her to hand over the child and be done with and please shut your mouth we are not interested in your opinion. You did what you were supposed to do and now thanks and goodbye. Jeremy yells at her and he and Sarah were even angry that she was not happy but had some doubts.
That was the moment were I realised that I hated this book. I hated Sarah and I hated Jeremy and I strongly despised Robinson. James also rolled over pretty fast, probably to suck up to Leah and Jeremy because Leah was over the moon that her best friend is marrying her brother-in-law. Yay, let's be jolly! I started with 4 stars, went to 3 stars in the middle and in the end I could only muster to give 1. I'm sorry, Elle but I never felt the love. They never even kissed when he proposed. I didn't expect them to have sex but this might at least have explained the attraction to me when they had sex and then were crazy for each other.
I know that this is fiction but I need a connection to the story and to the people and I never felt this here. Jeremy was a raging alcoholic who was deeply grieving for nine months and suddenly woke up and was in love with someone else. Some parts were quite funny, I give you that. I loved the dog moments which were pretty hilarious but I don't think grieve has a place in a funny romance, at least not when it was such a deeply described grieve like it was here. I have hopes for the third book as I liked Jana very much who by the way rolled over to easy for my liking in the end.
No sir, this was not my cup of tea. Let's see what Jana will do with Robinson. If I was here, I would grill his behind for the Cassie stunt. Hopefully she goes not easy on him.
