When Sadie Wise strikes up a seemingly innocent conversation with a stranger on a train, the only thing on her mind is finding her husband Eddie and making him sign their divorce papers. She tells Mona that Eddie has been avoiding her for years but now Sadie knows where he is, she can finally be free from him. In Sadie's mind, it's a throwaway moment. In Mona's mind, Sadie is asking Mona to do something very dangerous for her. That one chance encounter sets off a chain of events involving murder, deception and danger and Sadie soon realises that Mona has taken their meeting very seriously. Because now Mona is everywhere and she won't leave Sadie alone until she's fulfilled her side of their 'deal' . . .
A good well written book about 2 girls meeting on a train but that's where it all goes wrong for Sadie . I liked that the story had a beginning a middle and a final ending . 4 stars from me
Well this one had danger, pace and feeling and the initial meeting could happen, but that's about it. Sadie's thoughts about what she should do and then doesn't are very irritating. The dialogue at times is too repetitive. However if you overlook the fact that the series of events in the book are utterly fanciful it isn't a bad book for a rainy afternoon. Not really one to recommend.
Kray had a amazing gift for this kind of writing, this is an epic story and it flows so well together. I was on a roller coaster with the characters I also cringed when they did stupid things but thats what I love about these books and the ending I didn't see coming which is a awesome surprise.
Probably bit harsh in my rating but I found it dull and I found myself flicking pages just to finish it as it all just seemed boring. I liked the whole plot idea but the way it was written was just boring and couldn’t hold my attention
This is the first Roberta Kray book I have read and I will definitely be reading more. Dangerous Promises kept me up all night to see what the outcome would be for Sadie. Five day are from me I just loved it.
Loved this story, it kept me wanting to know how it was going to play out. Took me a bit to get into it but once I did, I couldn't put it down. I'll definitely be getting some more Roberta Kray books in the near future.
'Dangerous Promises' is a highly readable and engaging twist on Patricia Highsmith's 'Strangers on a Train' set in the world of 1980s East End gangsters. Sadie Wise, fed up with her estranged husband Eddie's disappearing antics and desperate to get a divorce, manages to track him down to his old stamping ground of Kellston in London. Whilst travelling there by train, she strikes up an unsettling conversation with an odd young woman called Mona, an individual with many troubles of her own, centered mainly around her father. Mona proposes that she kill Eddie and Sadie, as a quid pro quo, murder Mona's father, thus solving each other's problems in one fell swoop. Sadie rejects the notion out of hand and thinks no more of it until Eddie turns up dead, Mona appears on her doorstep, and Eddie's gang connections come looking to avenge him. Great page turner, kept my interest all the way, the ending is perhaps a bit of an anti-climax but that is a minor criticism. Will look for more books by this author.
I started this book and got in to it pretty much straight away. I like books where the story just begins and there's not a huge build up of pointless facts that's not needed at that point. Anyway....
I found this a good read and kept me interested but as the story went on I personally felt the events in the book were dragged on and a bit too much drama that seemed to just bore me a little in certain parts. Like it got me thinking would this happen in real life?? (I KNOW ITS FICTION) but it just seemed like I was waiting for the cliff hanger and the part that had me totally hooked with a shocker or a twist but unfortunately this didn't. As a reader your aware of the events going on and the person who done the murders but I'd have been more shocked if they left certain facts out and shocked me a bit more with a twist in the tale.
Other than that it is a good read but would have liked more of a nail biter moment like others in this genre!!!

Excellent! I have to put Kray in 1st place for authors of fictional books I've read, involves the reader in the places and the story, held my interest from start to finish. I plan on reading more of her novels. Only complaint I have is the number of chapters involving character development of Petra, Sharon, Wayne and Kelly... at some point I felt I knew what the deal was with that group & I skipped chapters regarding them and their dialog which seemed like overkill since they weren't all that dynamic as character persons., then picked up chapters about them later on while reading as they got involved more with the main story line. Sadie, Mona, Vera, and the guy Sadie met in London were the draw of the story and make up for a little lack of spark of some of the other characters. Overall, a highly recommended read!
A good down to earth crime fiction and a joy to read. Sadie Wise want's to get married and she has first to track down her ex husband to get him to sign the divorce papers. She is on a train heading to where she thinks he lives when a conversation with another passenger is about to rock her world. Sadie delves into the gangland world and doesn't realise that things will have consequenses ,she finds herself caught up in things she really shouldn't or wants to be. Will this change her life forever?, I will let you read for yourselves. I was lucky to get this copy from the first-reads competition for an honest review.
A great fast paced read, thankyou Goodreads. I've not read any of Roberta Kray's books before but if they are all of this quality I can see I will become a fan. This clever tale of a chance meeting on a train and the twists and turns that follow the two female leads will keep you gripped till the final page, just as I thought I had the answers, the story veered off in a different direction. Highly recommended.
I couldn't put it down and though I've won this book I have been a fan of Miss Krays books and was glued after a chance meeting on a train with a kooky girl whilst trying to track down her missing husband to get a divorce wheels set in motion by an unhinged mind who thinks to murder her husband as a favour on a misunderstanding
unbelievable story not written very well at all couldn't finish the book
not very well written not believable, felt the relationship between them wasnt executed well, the meeting to mona following her, you couldn't dive into the story
Honestly I struggled to read this book as I felt it dragged out quite a bit and it could have been shorter and told the same story. But overall the storyline was a good storyline and definitely gripping at times.
What a read! I don't really feel involved in books as I did with Sadie. Everything she felt and thought I would have been exactly the same in her position. The ending was fantastic I couldn't have asked for a better ending. I loved the way it told the story from every perspective including the inspectors. I loved this book one of my all time favourites
