This is the 2nd book in the FLC Case Files Series and I didn't read the first one so maybe I missed some of the background that would have made this book more enjoyable/believable.

Alana was a member of the First Ladies Club (FLC), a secret group that used bondage and seduction to put enemies of the US in compromising positions, filmed those sessions, and then used the sex tapes to blackmail or destroy the enemy. There is a suppossed BDSM room in the white house (I found this to be horribly unbelievable). So Alana somehow messed up and got hurt. Then the FLC gave her reconstructive survery on her face so she doesn't look like herself anymore and told everyone she was dead. (She had no choice in this and wasn't even told until after the fact). Then she was given a choice to train for a "security detail" or be killed. It turns out she was training to become an assassin. Again, I just found this unbelievable you can't make someone become an assassin. I didn't feel like Alana had the right temperment/personality to be an assassin.

Her Trainer became her lover and it just so happened that he was a Dom. Alana had "played" the role of both Dom and Sub before but preferred being a Sub. I didn't find the D/s relationship in this book very realistic based on Alana's strong personality and independence. I never believed that she would accept her new role in the FLC as an assassin and I didn't buy the "love" story in this book.

Intriguing blend of BDSM and suspense

RED TAPE PROTECTOR is an innovative blend of BDSM and suspense that makes for a refreshing, intriguing read.

When Alana made a critical mistake in a mission, she wasn't fired, but was given a choice--to be an assassin or to be eliminated. Hence, even though Alana didn't like to be an assassin, she had no choice, not if she wanted to live. However, it was hard for her, especially as she was kept in the dark about everything. When Jag, a Dom, became her handler during the training and the mission, things eased a bit as he also became her Dom and lover. But she couldn't stand it when it seemed Jag was also keeping things from her. Was their relationship doomed to fail before it even started?

Alana shows growth and development over the course of the novel. At the start, she is whiny, impulsive and irritating. And whiny. Oh, did I already say that? Glad to see that she changed and matured as she goes further into her training, becoming this capable young woman that others in the team can depend on. Although, I do have to wonder if that is how they train assassins? I mean, don't these candidates first go through tests and exams to assess if they have the psychological profile for it before undergoing training? Not that it matters to the story, actually. It's just something I thought of. :)

The story mainly is told from the heroine's point of view, and we (and the heroine) don't know much about Jag, except of course that he's with the Eagle Guard, he's her handler, he's a Dom, and that he's good in combat and leadership situations. I would've loved to know more about Jag, and it would have made the resulting use of the L word more believable. Even the characters themselves admit that they don't know much about each other, and the whole time we saw them they were either under training or on a mission, which is not really much of a gauge of how good (or bad) they would be together in (their) real life.

Apart from the story needing more romance and romantic development, I thought the suspense part was spine-tingling. The best scene for me was when Greg showed her the tape of the terrorist. I thought that was well done--the way it's written, the intensity of the scene, as well as the heroine's emotions/reactions--all combined to make a powerful impact. I think that's when she finally accepted that this is her destiny, her role in the bigger scheme of things.

There's some very mild BDSM content in the story, hence if you're not into BDSM or are a new reader to BDSM, this story would be a good fit. Actual rating is 3.5 stars. I'd be interested to read the other books in the series, especially to see the premise of using BDSM sex tapes to create scandals to bring down villainous powerful men.

Dark and Complicated Tale

Red Tape Protector is the second book in the FLC series by Kathy Kulig. This book is best read as part of the series and not as a standalone.

The beginning of the story leaves you wanting to know how this book will end. At the end of the first chapter I had a hard time getting into the book. The author created a world that pushed the boundaries of reality. The author was able to establish a time and place easily that enabled me to better picture the world she was creating. However the use of blackmail and sex as a way for world leaders to work together pushed the boundaries of reality as well. The pace of the story was a bit slow at some points and fast is others. The main characters and the secondary characters were captivating and in some ways believable. Jag and Alana each had faults that they each had to deal with making them realistic to some extent.

The point of view alternated between Alana and Jag, giving the reader a glimpse inside both characters. The changing point of view was done with care so the reader did not get lost or repeat story lines. The main conflict of the story is both Alana and Jag are to prepare for a undercover security job however they start to fall for each other. This book pushes every more than the last one the boundaries of reality. While knowing politics are dirty this has people playing god as to who will live and who will die. I think there was too much conflict in the story. It plan that the author is trying to make a long running series, and is incorporating storylines wherever she can. It’s too packed. The dialogue between the characters was frank and distinct. The characters voice matched not only the setting but fit their overall personality. The ending was a bit predictable but the author takes the reader on a wonderful journey. I hope we get to see these characters again in the future.

Alana was a member of the First Ladies Club (FLC), a secret group that used bondage and seduction to put enemies of the nation in compromising positions, filmed those sessions, and then used the sex tapes to blackmail or destroy the enemy. However, she made a mistake that got her killed (or so everyone was made to believe). Instead, unbeknownst to her, she under facial reconstruction surgery and was given a new identity, Carla, -- forced changes that made her very unhappy. She was then told she could either adjust to her new identity and train for a security detail or she could be killed. While she had played both the Domme and Sub role in her former position, she found the most pleasure in the Sub role if she had the right master. Jag, her trainer and protector in her new role, happens to be a Domme (and an enticing one at that). Much of the book focuses on Carla's training and preparation for her new position, including an introduction to the new world she will inhabit. Interspersed in her training is sessions of another sort, with Jag.

This was a decent book, 3.5 stars. There is good balance between the scenes with Carla and Jag, including their BDSM sessions, and the training for her new job. Carla is a believable character, especially her struggles to adjust to her new situation and the lack of information and control it entails. The bondage/dominance sessions are sensual and loving (for lack of a better word), rather than harsh and degrading, and work well to further the romantic aspect of the story; a kinky love story.

I really enjoyed this book. This is book two in the First Ladies Club Series. The FLC is a secret group that gets is headquartered in the basement of the white house. When Alana, one of the BDSM agents for the FLC makes a mistake, she becomes a target for a high powered enemy and thus a liability to the secret agency.

While in the hospital recovering from her injuries, Alana meets Jag, a black-ops guy she believes is her bodyguard. Alana and Jag share a mutual attraction to one another; Jag being a Dom and Alana preferring the submissive roll in her private life.

Once Alana is recovered enough to leave the hospital, the head of the FLC visits turns Alana's world for a loop. She is given the choice of becoming an assassin for the government or be killed (either by enemy or friendly fire). If that's not bad enough, the super hot Jag is to become her handler. Will Alana take the new job or run and what about Jag will he help her or put the assignment first?

The book is a awesome combination of romance, intrigue and betrayal. 2 Thumbs Up and this reader certainly looks forward to the next installment of the First Ladies Club.

Alana is a FLC security member at the white house. She get's terminally injured during a take down and for all intents and purposes is dead. However, she wakes up in hospital with a new name, new identity, a new look and new job. To say she is pissed off would be an understatement. Everything about her life has now changed, for good. She kind of brought this upon herself though, her recklessness caused this from the outset.

She begins training for her new role, she knows that information is being held back from her and that there is more going on that she is being told but she sucks it up and gets on with it anyway. She is reluctant to trust anyone but puts her faith in her trainer Jag. Actually she not only trusts him with her life but her body also. That man knows how to satisfy her in every way. Once she discovers what he has been holding back from her she realises that she can trust no one.

This wasn't the usual type of book that I would choose but it was it was a good read.

Great blend of suspense and light BDSM

Red Tape Protector is a great combination of light BDSM and suspense that keeps you turning pages! The BDSM content is relevant to the story and kept light and mild so if you are new to the genre, or haven't enjoyed it in the past, this may be a good choice for you.

The idea that the First Lady employs a squad of spies, blackmailers and assassins to remove corrupt officials from power is a very intriguing one - albeit somewhat implausible .... but hey who says that fantasies need any grounding in reality? Sometimes it's better if they don't, in my opinion.

I am definitely intrigued by Kathy Kulig and look forward to reading more of her work.

With a threat on her life, Alana must now be dead to the world and become Carla. The danger is on another level and things just got crazier. Jag, her partner and trainer tells her to trust no one. Carla is faced with obstacles and dangers that would make anyone run for cover. The journey I took on this book was packed with excitement and non stop action! My first Kathy Kulig book and not my last! Copy given by author in exchange for an honest review.

Different
The story line for this book was good. However, I felt that it didn't flow well. It had questions, comments, and events that didn't connect to anything. The characters were good, but could have been a little more defined. Overall, it was an ok book. I received this book from the author/publisher in exchange for an honest review through Reading Alley.
