OhMyGawd. I'm so sorry for every complaint I ever said about my mother.

Every angsty teen moment I had pales in comparison to what Kate Friedman-Siegel went through. Her mother (Kim) took the phrase

"If you're going to commit to something, you better do whatever it takes to make it happen."

so literally that I was physically cringing (while simultaneously laughing) as I read this book. This mother knows no bounds when it comes to her baby's success and sex-life.

Kate Friedman-Siegel has a somewhat unusual relationship with her mother - they talk, constantly. And not just the hellos and how-are-yous, we're talking non-stop texting from sun-up to sun-down. And what comes of her mother's mouth? Pure gold.

"Happy birthday spawn, welcome to the wrong side of 25. The expiration date on your eggs is officially in sight. Tick tock."

Kim was quite the no-nonsense feminist powerhouse back in the day. While she still has her adventures (i.e. convincing a fireman to smuggle her back into an evacuated zone so she can feed her pets), now she's focusing all that unspent energy into meddling with Kate's life (i.e. giving said fireman Kate's number).

This prompted Kate to start an instagram account (@crazyjewishmom) that quickly catapulted her mother's words into internet-stardom. The subject of many of the posts? Grandspawn. Kim wants her grandchildren, and she wants them now. No man, not even "Superjew" (Kate's latest BF) could escape her mother's attention:

"As far as I'm concerned, Superjew's day's are numbered. NO RING ON THE FINGER U MUST NOT LINGER."

From college applications to chasing off "wrong" boyfriends, this surprisingly sweet, yet slightly horrifying, account of helicopter-ing Jewish mother is sure to delight and terrify you.

Now excuse me, I need to call my own mom and apologize for every time I was a brat - I did not know how bad things could've been.

Author, Kate Siegel, and her mother Kim Friedman arrived in New York a few weeks before college classes were going to begin for Kate. After doing lots of shopping together for Kate’s dorm accessories—- they made their way over to Kate’s new gyno-office.

It was a confusing time for Kate, so she admits that getting birth control was probably wise. Her mother insisted on staying in the exam room with her daughter.
Kate was crinkling the paper gown nervously, her legs dangling over the edge, firmly closed. Her mother gestured toward the stirrups.
Mom says.....
“What’re you waiting for? Spread em!
“No!”
“Oh, come on! What’re you, shy all of a sudden?

I could have died ....couldn’t you? I was laughing for the next 4 or 5 pages non- stop....
Kate was worried that her “cobweb-dusted vagina was not going to make a good first impression with Dr. Wiener. I was dying laughing. Who thinks like that during their gyno exam? Between the mom- doctor and Kate .... this scene alone was worth a million bucks of laughs!!!!

Dr. Wiener comes in. Mom chimes right in on Kate’s behalf. She tells the doctor that Kate will be starting PRINCETON in a few weeks, so “we” want to get her fitted for a diaphragm and talk to you about sex.

Can you imagine how Kate is feeling? Mom HAD to scream PRINCETON.....( everywhere they went) ....
The scene that continues is as hilarious as it is mortifying. THEY DO TALK ABOUT SEX! Not sure it’s very sexy!

I had never heard of Kate Siegel - and her mother- (apparently they are quite a popular social media pair on instantgram @ CrazyJewishMom).

Funny - funny - funny!! A GREAT BREAK FROM SERIOUS BRAIN-THINKING books.

This book was a fast, short book in the comedy section. I love listening to this style while driving. This book was about the instagram account Crazy Jewish Mom. I had never heard of that until I started listening to this book. The audio cd was great because Kate and her mom were both on it. The conversations they had were very personal and open, so it was fun listening to the relationship that they have.

I suggest this book to females that are looking for a funny read :)

I know what you are thinking: a book based on an Instagram account? Really?
What is this: the Amarosa of social media trying to cash in on 10 seconds of fame?

I thought so too. But I was wrong. This book by Kate Siegel is VERY GOOD! Funny, thought provoking, and a tribute to her Mother, Kim Friedman, who, after reading this book, I really would love to meet!

I pre-ordered this book to be delivered to my Kindle on the release date specifically for my upcoming cruise. Problem is, I finished it in a day and 2 days before the cruise started! The book is a quick read, full of essays on Kim's antics with and about her only child, Kate. The writing is GOOD. Princeton graduate Kate has a way with words that will have you chuckling and wishing YOU could be embarrassed by a loving mom like Kim as well. Kate's dad, Michael, should be considered for sainthood. The rescue cat story and the fake ID for rowing camp should qualify him.

I give this book 5 stars. It is not hoaky. It is not fluffy. It is well written and thoroughly enjoyable. Excellent summer read!!! Check it out!

The problem with this book is that the author is complaining about how her crazy Jewish mom is overly-involved in her life, but during times when CJM seemed to be respecting boundaries the author deliberately invited into the middle of intimate issues.

There's a lot of vagina talk and full chapters devoted to what you do and do not put in them. There's another few chapters about career miss-starts that were funded by the author's wealthy parents and the amazing lengths the author's CJM went to to ensure she got into the best schools when she likely could have gotten there on her own because she is obviously a smart person.

There is a forward in which the author states she had a lawyer review the stories to ensure her mother couldn't get into trouble for any of them now; I thought that was a joke, but CJM views laws as suggestions rather than guidelines and I did spend most of the book thinking, "this woman must be completely nuts." I'd like to provide an example, but I feel like I'm already spoiling the book.

I think I may have been more involved if I knew who Kim Friedman or Kate Siegal were; I picked the book up because it looked whimsical and it's hot pink. You will not leave this book a better person because I don't think there's anything enriching in it, except maybe that the author and her mother clearly care for one another despite their enmeshment and the fact that CJM refers to the author almost exclusively as "Spawn."

Skip it, read something by Stephen King instead.

Hahhaa i randomly picked up this book and when i saw those all hillarious conversation between Kate and her mother i just loved it! Hahhaaa totally ridiculuos LMFAO. I should read this books for this moment now. Another side-job reading Cantik itu Luka by Eka Kurniawan .

I wish i can have meet Kim Friedman right now. hahhaa.. i just can't imagine if my mom really done this to me such as :
1. She told me about sex when i was nine years old,
2. she Kidnapped a sick kitten from pet shop to rescue it *hahhaa i just wanna laugh to read this part
3. she barging into my dormitory in the midnight in my birthday and told me that she, dad, and family relatives will live near me
4. when your mom asking you to have birth control pill before you entered as college freshmen
5. when your mom are really paranoid about carcinogenic/cancer and everything that resulted radition will be banned >__<
6. when your mom celebrate your first period into period party
7. when your mom make an fake ID for you LOL etc

Hhahaa.. okay it really makes me laugh since it really funny! I just doesn't know that Kate have an awesome mother and really cool! haha.. this books really cheer me up today :)

Upoznajte najgoru majku koja postoji. Ne najgoru izmišljenu, fiktivnu majku koja je over-the-top samo u knjizi, nego bukvalno najgoru majku na celom svetu (ovo je autobiografska knjiga). Mislim da je majka u "Dete zvano To", mala beba za ovu očajnicu.

Ova knjiga je nominovana u kategoriji "humor", a ja sam umrla od neprijatnosti čitajući je, ne od smeha. I inače mi je koncept "mama je moja najbolja drugarica" strašno jeziv, a ova devojka u knjizi baš tako i opisuje svoje avanture sa svojom majkom Jevrejkom (pošto po pravilu Jevreji veruju da su njihove majke iz nekog razloga drugačije i uvek opravdano neurotične).

Ne znam odakle bih pre počela:

- majka Kim je izuzetno agresivna, nekad otvoreno (viče na prodavce, veterinare, majke ćerkinih drugarica), a nekad pasivno (mužu ne da da završi utakmicu jer je shvatila da mora ODMAH da počne sa pripremanjem 12-godišnje ćerke za koledž, tako da ga optužuje za nemar i tera ga u kuhinju iz istog momenta)

- nevaspitana je, krade (iz plemenite pobude???), vređa

- hapšena je više puta, a nakon toga je ćerki lagodno nabavila lažnu ličnu kartu sa 12 godina kako bi je upisala na veslanje koje će joj trebati za aplikaciju za koledž na koji, naravno, ćerka neizostavno mora da ode

- ne poštuje ničiju privatnost, kada je ćerka "postala žena", razglasila je to u njenom školskom hodniku i naterala mu��a da ćerki priredi TAMPON ŽURKU gde su, naravno, tamponi bili pokačeni po kući, a poslužena je samo crvena hrana

- uhodila je nekoliko osoba pod izgovorom da podržava ćerkine izbore i tako ljude stavljala u neizmerno neprijatne situacije

- savetovala maloletnoj ćerki koja se nikada ranije nije poljubila da nasrne na audiciji za predstavu na nekog klinca, obgrli ga nogama i gura jezik u usta, kako bi bila posebna i dobila ulogu

- kada je ćerka otišla na koledž doselila se za njom i svakodnevno je pratila kako bi bila sigurna u njenu bezbednost, a ovaj debil od devojke koji piše knjigu kaže da joj je majčino prisustvo tako lepo pomoglo da se izbori sa naletom testosterona momaka na fakultetu (?!?!?!)

- majka je pratila ćerku na prvi ginekološki pregled i kada je saznala da je doktorkin muž producent, insistirala je da ćerka otpeva nešto u ordinaciji, a zatim ostavila njen CD (koji uvek sa sobom nosi???)

- kao hipohondar, od ćerkinog rođenja merila je nekim aparatom stepen kancerogenosti okoline, pa je svog asistenta platila da izmeri stepwn opasnosti u svakom ćošku škole

Ovo je tako gadno i jezivo, da nemam reči i preporučujem svima da pročitaju ovaj festival preteranog i lažnog majčinskog odnosa sa detetom.

Mercifully, this was short. I'll start by saying that I'm not a fan of body humor, and at least 70% of the chapters in this book are about Kate Siegel's vagina. I wavered around two stars for most of the book, but what finally put me over the edge was when she started to talk about her ingrown pubic hairs.

I didn't find this funny at all. I cracked a smile when she mentioned how her mom collects dogs, when she detailed how they stole a kitten from the shelter, and how her mom would routinely give her phone number out when Kate was single—all things that I've endured from my own mom. But overall, I found Kate's tone pretentious.

She emphasizes her interest in AP English classes and her Princeton education, once admitting she thought a love letter she wrote was better than Shakespeare, that she was the next Shonda Rhimes, and yes, that she thought her idea for a reality tv show would score her an Emmy.

This just wasn't for me.

A quick, amusing read--but not laugh out loud funny. I had seen most, if not all, of the text conversations repurposed in this book from the original Instagram account. Unfortunately, these (and, specifically, the author's mom) are more entertaining than the author's stories.

I also had a problem relating to the stories because the author comes from a place of insane privilege--not that I have to be able to relate for it to be a good read, or that privilege is inherently a bad thing. But, some of it was just eye roll inducing and, frankly, unnecessary. One small example: did you really need to specify the name of your elite K12 private school (which, yes, most of us have heard of) other than to humble brag? Things like this served no purpose at all to the story being told, except to make it painfully clear that the author and her family had/have more opportunities open to them than the average Joe. And, when the author tried to downplay her privilege, it just made me roll my eyes at how little awareness she has of her own financial situation: wah wah I live in Brooklyn because I'm on a budget, except I can quit my job and write full time because someone else will pay my bills. Yep.

OMG y did I read this book?

I selected this book from my To Read shelf because I hoped it would be funny.

Guess what.

It is funny.

However, that being said, I blushed from the first to the final page. My face scalding, I hoped my aged Mammy would never know I was reading such an…?...such an intimate [?] book.

Listen to this: I grew up in a time when should it have come to pass that some yahoo uttered the F-word in the vicinity of my girlfriend’s delicate ears manly protocol demanded that I challenge said yahoo outside — figuratively and/or literally speaking — to knock his block off.

Fortunately for me I’ve worn spectacles since the earliest of my formative years. I trusted that any yahoo I was required to challenge in defence of my girlfriend’s virtuous ears would not hit back at a guy wearing glasses…that he would lie prone — lie prostrate! — and permit me a macho-man’s victory.

Imagine how I felt while reading a book in which the author(ess) herself speaks the fisticuffs compelling word!

OMG!

Surprisingly — maybe not — this book brought memories of my dear ol’ departed Granny.

Granny was a child — was an old woman! — of the Victorian Age, an Age during which even suggestively curvaceous table legs wore skirts.

Granny would have been outraged had she lived to see a Victoria’s Secret catalogue. She would have evoked avenging angels if she had been obliged — I fail to imagine any reason she might have been obliged — to read a single page of this book in which a young woman speaks openly about the intricacies of her private parts.

OMG! Granny would have prayed over me for saying, “Oh my God!” and pronounced me a sinner.

So…

My spectacles fogged because of my burning chops, I read every page of this hilarious book. Sure, I even quoted lines to Missus who — as you would expect, I s’pose, eh b’ys? — pierced me with a knitting needle.

Funny book. Funny book.

Read this book for a Copycat Challenge of one of my groups. Was in the mood for something silly and this seemed perfect. I have no clue who either this author or her mom are, but I do know I had fun reading this one. It tells us all about Kate's past and present (from periodparties to surprise visits to your college kids to cats and dogs) and her always hovering nearby helicopter/stalker/creepy as hell mom. I am sorry, I just found the mom highly annoying and I just couldn't understand how anyone would be around her. Totally sorry again, but if this was my mom I would have fled. Some parts are funny and I laughed, but a lot of times it was just so cringy that the mom would go that far.
But Kate could write and I did have tons of laughs. Yes, the mom was/is annoying/horrible, but I also couldn't stop laughing at many parts. Oh dear lord, the embarrassment.
I would have loved more text messages as that was what I came here for. I thought this book would be full with them, but instead they are generally only at the beginning (or the end depending on how you looked at it) of the chapters.

Do yourself a favor and listen to the audio version of this book. It's read by the author (Kate) and her Crazy Jewish Mom. As a long time fan of the Instagram feed, I was excited to support this title, and I'm glad I read it-- I laughed out loud multiple times listening. This book was well worth the 3.5 hours it took to complete, and I recommend it to anyone looking to laugh and just take their mind off of a few things. Plus, Kate does an excellent job of bringing the Insta feed to life in this book.

I listened to this on Audiobook (Read by the Author) after laughing at so many posts about "Crazy Jewish Mom." Hoping that this book would make me laugh out loud. (Spoiler I didn't.) While the stories were entertaining I enjoyed her mom, more than the author herself.

I honestly fell asleep listening to this, and didn't feel the need to re-listen to the parts that I missed.
It would have been a lot funnier if it was a collection of texts, conversations, ect. The stories included just felt lacking in a way.

Freaking hilarious. I found my mother and mother-in-law represented in this book, and gods did it ever make me feel like my life was less crazy. I mean, my mom is way over-protective, but at least it's not at a ten-out-of-ten every moment of every day. I think any too-close mother/daughter relationship will find themselves here and crack up. People not in that category will still have a grand time. Seriously, this is a book full of literal cat-burglars and despiration for grandchildren. It only takes a few hours to read, so sit down, destress, and enjoy.

Sometimes funny, but so shallow!

Не поняла я в чем прикол. Очень как-то пошло и глупо. Абсолютно типичные для американской культуры случаи из жизни подростка. Ничего супер смешного или оригинального. Причем автор из кожи вон лезет чтобы описать не смешные ситуации еще пошлее и глупее. Не смешно. Истории просто кусками из разных годов про девушку и ее сердобольную мамашу. Вся забота матери сводиться к тому, что она хочет абы за кого поскорее выдать дочь. Сама книга ощущается незаконченной. Просто кучка несуразных рассказов. Сами сообщения (те самые из аккаунта героини из иг) на редкость ... несуразные. Мать все время несет фигню, а дочь капслуком пытается от нее отделаться.

Закрыла книгу и ощущение что зря потратила время.

If you enjoy the shenanigans that happen on the Crazy Jewish Mom Instagram account, you will get a kick out of this book. Kate Friedman-Siegel shares some of her more outrageous adventures with her mom in this book of essays. I found myself giggling out loud in several places. I also cringed in sympathy several times.
I really enjoyed all the love and honesty Kate and Kim have in their relationship. I would definitely recommend Mother, Can You Not? to anyone looking for a quick read that will bring a smile to your face.

I’m Laughing and Kinda Jealous

This book was very well written and sort of profound considering it was full of first-world problems and based on curated text messages. Siegel even created a sort of plot from what might have been random “OMG my mother texted this” and memoirs of being upset over nothing much. She’s an engaging writer and I wish I were her crazy mother, or her, or maybe Buster the cat.

I've been following crazyjewishmom on Instagram for a while now and it always makes me smile. I love both Kate's mortified reaction to her mom's comments and her mom's awesome off the cuff remarks. So when I saw (on Instagram) that a book was coming out, I put it on my wishlist. And Mother, Can You Not? did not disappoint. It was hilarious.

I read this book as a collection of quirky, hilarious stories that never failed to make me grin. For a while it was my companion in the bubble bath. Soon I found myself reading aloud some of the chapters to my own daughter and laughing with her. I even started recounting some of the stories to my girlfriends (who immediately reacted by saying, "Wait, who did this?").

Not only does she have a great sense of humour, Kate Siegel is a gifted writer. Her style is open and honest. I felt like I was listening to one of my girlfriends tell me about her quirky mom. And, of course, I finished the book thinking that these are MY kind of people. But more than that I very much enjoyed Kate's style as a writer. She has the kind of voice that draws the reader in (think Meg Cabot). I hope to see much more from her!

Mother, Can You Not? is the perfect book to gift a friend, share with a colleague or just treat yourself to. Highly recommend it!

I absolutely loved this book. It isn't one of those "suck-you-in-can't-put-it-down" kind of books, but I enjoyed just picking it up here and there for a chapter or two and a guaranteed good laugh. Kate has such a ridiculously unique relationship with her mom that makes you wonder if it could even be real.

Every time I sat down to read the book, I started cracking up. I thought my mom and I talked about way too much information, but we don't even compare to Kate and Kim. They discuss everything from spanks to birth control and everything in between. I thought this book could possibly just be a repeat of all of the photos Kate posts to instagram, but it was so much better. She goes into the full stories behind her posts and gives details that are sure to make you laugh until your ribs hurt.

In short, I really enjoyed Mother, Can you NOT? and would definitely recommend it to people looking for a relaxing and hilarious read. I can only imagine the books to come from Kate and her mom Kim. I look forward to reading more about their hilarious life, so here's to hoping Kate gets married and writes her next book about planning her wedding with her Crazy Jewish Mom!

The marketing campaign for this book was exceptional. The promotional posts were on point, the cover is hilarious, and they hit a balance between earnest authenticity and playing up the characters who drove @CrazyJewishMom’s Instagram success. My major take away was in 21st century branding best practices - Kate and her mom will likely find continued success with this franchise.

As for the actual review: some of the stories were hilarious, and made for a light evening read. However, stylistically, I felt that the book brought little to the table. Where author excels at snack-sized storytelling through the Instagram medium, this ‘expanded’ [sic] essayist style fell short of expectations (probably because her social presence is so phenomenal). Overall, it was an enjoyable book and will likely make for a good Mother’s Day present.

To be honest, I thought this book was H Y S T E R I C A L. Kate's mom reminds me so much of my mother it's SCARY. God bless her soul though because her mother is like my mother x5. It was a quick, fun read that I needed while reading Glass Sword at the same time. Also, gotta say I commend Kate for quitting her job and living her dream even though she didn't know what was coming next. She created a funny, impressive piece of work.
