Shake, Rattle, and Hurl! (Rotten School)
Bernie is in the cafeteria about to get another piece of pizza, when the Nyce House Band comes into the room and starts to play. Sherman Oaks is on the tambourine. (He really doesn’t have any talent and can’t be bothered with learning an instrument). The real talent of the band is Sherman’s friend Wes Updood who plays a MEAN sax. And to top it off he’s one of the coolest guys in school. He’s so cool he says things like “Jack of diamonds, everyone” and no one knows what he’s talking about.

Everyone is LOVING it! April-May-June is bopping along to the music. Freeman and Crench are even into it. Bernie doesn’t see the big deal. His friends think Wes will win the talent show. This doesn’t do anything for Bernie until he finds out that the prize is two tickets to see the Plopps (Bernie’s favorite singing group). Plus, you get to meet them backstage. Bernie decides right then and there that Rotten House will be winning the Talent Contest and he’ll be the one going to that concert. There’s just one problem. Neither Bernie, Crench or Freeman have any talent.

After lunch, Bernie runs into April-May-June going to her room to wash bird poop out of her hair. He asks her to the concert, but she says she’s going with Wes Updood when he wins the contest. He asks what if he doesn’t. She looks at him like are you deaf? You just heard him play. Bernie tells her there’s more to life than talent. There’s good looks. She basically tells him which you don’t have either and runs off. Bernie watches her go and thinks you’ll change your mind soon enough.

Feenman, Belzer, and Crench meet with Bernie. He tries to convince them that his dog (Gassy) can count to 1. What he does is passes gas. They’re like uh NO Bernie. That stinks as much as he does. But he says he has another act. He puts on thick glasses and stuffs pillows down his jeans. He’s Mrs. Heinie. Of course, she picks then to walk into the room.

He tries to bs his way out of it and tells her he’s playing “Pillow Search” a game where you hide the pillow and the others tackle the one with the pillow. I love her response! She tells him one pillow would have been enough. LOL Bernie has another idea but it’s as bad as the others. He says they can hum into toilet tissue rolls. He goes out to take a walk to think and is run down by Jennifer. She swoops him up, takes off running, and says they’re going to win the talent contest.

She tells takes him to her dorm and tells him she can throw her voice, and she needs him to be her dummy. Only it becomes clear pretty quickly she just wanted to get him to sit on her lap. Sherman passes Sherman who tells him he and the headmaster were practicing handing off the trophy. Bernie says he practiced with the wrong guy because he’s going to be the winner. Sherman laughs hysterically. Then takes him to Nyce House and shows him his new keyboard with the programmed drum breat. This is how he knows they’ll win. Bernie breaks the keyboard and then leaves. On the way out he sees April fawning over We playing his sax.

Belzer, Feenman and Crench show Bernie their Three Stooges act. Only they leave out the “pretend” part and really injure each other. So, Bernie decides to search the dorm from top to bottom. All of a sudden he hears something. It’s someone playing the guitar and they are GOOD! It has to be a CD Bernie thinks. But no. The music stopped for a moment. Then started up again, playing the same song, only in a different rhythm. It turns out to be Chipmunk whose playing in his closet not to bother anyone. Bernie gets all excited and tells him he’ll get over his shyness by playing in the talent show and he’ll win. He goes to get the others but Chipmunk is gone.

They find him under the bed. When they hear him, they all agree they can’t lose. Bernie decides to go to Nyce House and help Chipmunk out by water Wes’s saxophone.

Bernie is intercepted by Sam and Janet Pocketlint (who are over Nyce House). He tells them he was sent to get We’s sax. When they find out he’s a music lover, they make him listen to Mozart for hours. By the time their done, Wes has his sax and is playing it in the common room. Because of this, Bernie tells his friends they have to win the contest fair and square Besides how can they lose? Chipmunk is awesome!

On the day of the audition, Bernie looks for Chipmunk, but this friends say he’s chained himself to his bed. Jennifer does her act with a dummy that looks like Bernie. Flora and Fauna sing “Getting to Know You”. (They aren’t good.) They start arguing and then actually fighting. Twinkler (the drama teacher) has to drag them off the stage. Feeman and Crench bring Chipmunk in but forget his guitar and have to run back out to get it. Chipmunk tries to run but Bernie tackles and sits on him.

Wes’s band plays and they get a standing ovation. Even when Sherman’s keyboard shorts. When Chipmunk finds out there’s no closet, he throws up everywhere and that’s that. Bernie knows he’s doomed when the only other “talent” he can find is a kid named Mason Dixon chocking while trying to gargle all of Hilary Duff’s songs and Beast trying to burp the love song in Star Wars. Then he has an idea.

At the contest, Flora and Fauna start fighting again. Wes’s band is great! Even tho Feeman has drilled holes in his sax. It’s just given him an advantage to play higher notes. When it comes time for Chipmunk to play, he starts to ask for his closet. Bernie pushes it on stage. He’s torn it out of his wall. Chipmunk wins the contest and invites April-May to go to the concert with him (happy that he’s gotten over his shyness).

Rating: 5 and a half I liked what Bernie did for Chipmunk in this one. Didn’t like what Chipmunk did in return tho and I don’t see why *anyone* wants April-May- “User”! Wait a minute tho… Didn’t Chipmunk do this in another book when Bernie tried to help him get over his fears? Did he turn on him for one of the guys in “Rotten House”. The bully? So maybe Chipmunk and April *do* deserve each other. No wonder Chipmunk is in "Rotten House".

Rotten School: Shake, Rattle, & Hurl is a fun story about the Rotten School and Bernie Bridges. Bernie is trying to impress his crush, April-May June, by winning the talent show over Wes Updood. R.L. Stine does well at creating fun imaginative books that are still rooted in reality on a certain level with what it feels like to be a kid. The names of Stine’s characters are always fun, random, and creative. The illustrations are all heavily accenting different kid features, and they are quite overexaggerated but that makes it fun for kids to connect with and understand.

Bernie Bridges and his wild days at Rotten School continue with even more shenanigans. When Bernie B finds out that winning the talent show means getting backstage passes to meet the Plopps sisters at their upcoming concert, Bernie won’t stop until he gets his hands on them. The only issue is, he doesn’t know anybody with any talent. Follow along as he tries to find ridiculously hilarious acts that are good enough to win the talent contest. The book is funny and it has some cool illustrations throughout. You really can’t ever go wrong with R.L. Stine books, worth a try!

To me, this is the best Rotten School so far. Bernie actually does something decent (although for the wrong reasons,) and Chipmunk ends up gaining some confidence.

Though Bernie Bridges schemes, tricks and cheats to get what he wants, he is a fun character to read about. He reminds of Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell, but only more devious. I'm sure almost every school has had some sort of talent contest, so the plot will appeal to younger readers. Overall, Rotten School: Shake, Rattle, & Hurl! is another fun entry in the series with hilarious jokes and fun illustrations.

Sean really liked this. We read it over three evenings. It's infantile and almost definitely for boys rather than girls.

Here, the hero of the series (Bernie Bridges) does whatever it takes to win a talent contest and go to see The Plopps in concert. Chipmunk, the star guitarist of Rotten House, does his best not to throw up while helping Bernie. But is he helping?

Bernie needs to win the talent show to get tickets to a concert, so he recruits a young boy, Chipmunk. Chipmunk is a great guitarist, but hurls on stage-stage fright. This one wasn't as good as the other Rotten School book I read, but it was still enjoyable-same kind of humor, and definitely gross enough for young boys to love these books!

I unfortunely had some issues with this series because of the way that the protagonist treats his female classmates. He is either chasing a girl he says doesn't know she is his girlfriend yet or running away from a classmate who is portrayed as an ugly, fat, and creepy girl.
