Maggie Tabberer is one of Australia's most photographed, most talked about and most loved personalities. Here she tells of her journey from a childhood in suburban Adelaide to the peak of the Australian fashion industry, a journey of stunning professional achievements matched by a rich and often tempestuous personal life.
For the first time Maggie reveals the highs and lows of her first marriage when she was just a teenager, her on-again off-again romance and marriage with Ettore Prossimo, her romantic liaisons and her long-term relationship with Richard Zachariah. She takes us into her life, and with honesty, laughter and sometimes tears she introduces us to her children, her friends, her world.
Margaret May Tabberer was an Australian fashion, publishing and television personality. She was a dual recipient of the Gold Logie award for her television work. Tabberer founded her own fashion label and PR companies and was known for her long-time position as fashion editor of the Australian Women's Weekly magazine.
I don't often read bios about women. I saw this on shelf, and thought I'd give it a go. I'm not at all into fashion so I couldn't really relate to Maggie's professional life. Her personal life, however, did resonate.
It's written in a very easy to read style and is honest, albeit one sidedly so. Autobiography's always lack perspective. Not a criticism, just a fact. I always wonder how so much detail can be recalled by the writer's. I understand that other people will have some input and in Maggie's case she kept a diary. I really liked the inclusion of some of her diary entries.
Making comments about the content of biography's is fraught with danger because its difficult not to make judgements. I did think that most of the book lacked humility though, and it was a little hypocritical of the author to criticise her husbands/partners for being unfaithful.
I found the personal aspect of her story compelling, but was a little bored by descriptions of her working life and then endless parties and holidays. I'm not sorry I read Maggie, but it wasn't great in my opinion.
Growing up with Maggie on screen and in the magazines my mother read piqued my interest when handed this book by a friend. Learning about Maggie's start in life and her early days in modelling and TV was interesting, as I was a child then, so unaware of her profile until the 1980s. Maggie Tabberer was one of the first empowering female figures in the Australian landscape, and lived life on her terms. I found this autobiography of interest.
I read this book in 3 days, Maggie had a great life but unfortunately didn't pick the right men in her life. This book was published in 1998 - what's happened to Maggie since then, she would be 82 this year.
A good read. Honest writing from Maggie. I enjoyed this very much. Maggie has achieved so much. Although 24 years old would love to know what Maggie is up to now.
